  • On May 10th 2024 the largest geomagnetic storm in 21 years took place. It caused huge Northern Light displays over a good part of the Earth. The Aurora was even visible at places like Spain and Africa. Unheard of! I witnessed this history in the making moment in my home country The Netherlands at 52 degrees North. Join me as I try to photograph and vlog this once in a lifetime astronomical event.

      Absolutely. What an amazing time, I forgot I can make a pano so i didn’t. Too overwhelmed. Also the first time my 14mm was not wide enough. It was truly the most special Astrophotography night of my life. In between Timelapse ms I was running around like a mad man. Keep up the good work amazing content!

    Love this video Jeroen. It portrayed the excitement and chaos of trying to capture photos, timelapses, vlogs at the same time - glad it wasn't just me 😂. You images are stunning, a lot more colour variety than we got. We also had lots of issues with cloud, fog, and lens fogging - and I only had one lens warmer unfortunately which meant the second camera couldn't be used for much of the night. Hope to get my vlog out in a few weeks.

      Glad you enjoyed again and thanks for letting me know Greg! You were definately not the only one excited and chaotic at the same time haha. Also not the only one with lenses fogging up. There are various video moments where I forgot to wipe my lens. It fogged up in a matter of minutes at some time. Ofcourse I also forgot about that second dewheater I had in my bag... ;-).

    Jeroen fantastic video and photos, a lot of excitement and frenzy to not miss anything of the show you were watching. Further south here we were also very lucky (Portugal) near sunset there were some clouds that soon moved away. This weekend I did 250km to a darker part of the country with two friends just with the intention of doing Nightscape, it was an unforgettable night, we were presented with Pink and Red colors I think because of our latitude and height that the Northern Lights formed , we stayed taking photos and enjoying the spectacle until dawn. It was simply memorable, thank you for sharing your emotions with us, see you soon

      The first time you saw them in Portugal? Could you see them well with the naked eye. While you are far to the south, some advantage is to be had too: the sky is darker this time of year and if you would have gone to Serra da Estrela or in fact quite a few places inland the light pollution is also far far less than in The Netherlands. Well not visibly. 1989, 2000, 2003 (two times) were much brighter. 1989 is from what I have been told, 2000 I saw with my own eyes (it was way brighter reds were so deep red you could read a newspaper in it) 2003 i did see fractions of it but it clouded up too quickly here in SW NL (Vrouwenpolder). Also in 2000 those intense bright reds with also very intense streamers lasted 2-3 hours. That is to say: at least visually it can be a lot better.

I didn't know which way to point my camera as the 'rainbow bridge' arced directly above me from East to West! First of all great footage and a very nice place for beautiful compostions. Given the overcast weather of the last, well, months we were very very lucky to have such clear skies right at that moment!
    I have nice pics too etc but am one of the few who was not too impressed for the simple reason that the lights in 2000 were so much brighter. The difference cannot be underestimated. But that is positive. While this show actually worldwide almost was seen to extremely low lattitudes, the colours that came through at least when I watched (0.45 h - 3.30 h LT) were in fact so so. But may be the show was at its peak before that?
    But this is all meant in a positive way: this aurora was very good, but for The Netherlands not exceptional.

      @StarScaperPhoto  วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@StarScaperPhoto Sure you had the time of your life, I was cheering too. Of course it was great and the fact that another one was even more majestic is only meant to indicate that it could even become better, not to take anything away from anyones experience. A funny anecdote: I know people from the Sterrenwacht Phillipus Lansbergen in Middelburg. Now september 2011 I went to Vrouwenpolder, the darkest spot in the SW of NL. I went to one of the many obscure, sandy paths that lead over the dune to the shore. After an hour or so a guy came to me. Since there as no one around, I found it peculiar. It was the head of the Sterrenwacht. We laughed and he was pissed since he missed the weak display. Now on the 10th of May I went to a different spot, 10 km away from Vrouwenpolder. In the countryside where I also have a weatherstation installed in the field. So when I arrived I could hear voices 200-300 m down the road and figured people were watching too. After anhour I decided to move but figured they may be weren't well versed in Aurorae. may be I could help. So I parked my car next to theirs, went out and you guessed it: the same guy I met in 2011 in Vrouwenpolder was now here and needed no explanation at all. And this time, he was far more lucky then in 2011! we stood there for hours.

    • @StarScaperPhoto
      @StarScaperPhoto  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's great to hear! For me the editing was pretty straight forward. The main thing to let the aurora pop a little bit more was to dehaze a bit in LR. But this might also have had to do with the hazy skies we got.
