Wasn't that one of the greatest shows on earth?!?! It was everywhere for hours! 😃 Maybe it was courtesy of the spirit of Alyn Wallace to get the world excited about the night sky. ❤ Beautiful and amazing images as always Richard!🙂 Cheers to you!

So many great images! We were at our Star Party on a property between Geelong and Ballarat and managed to get under 3 hours of clear views South. It was such a magical experience. Also, nice tribute to Alyn - He is on my mind every time I try editing my images from that night.

Richard, never have I seen you so animated during a nightshoot. Like a kid in a candy shop! The aurora does that to people for some strange reason. I'm so glad that night sky lovers from both hemispheres got to witness a part of history. This was officially the strongest solar storm for 21 years beating the Halloween 2003 storm. I just wished Alyn Wallace was still with us to witness it 💚 brilliant video

Wow Richard! This video was spectacular! Seeing you so jazzed up and almost speechless with the show you were seeing was going to be the best part of the video. Your awesome images were going to be the frosting on the cake, then you got the tribute to Alyn Wallace in! That put it over the top for me. You really outdid yourself! By the way, the conditions in northeast Wisconsin may be looking good for some Aurora hunting tonight.

Great images and video fella. I went out not expecting much so didn't take out all my cameras. I ended up using my phone to capture some shots.
Nice touch dedicating it to Alyn, I did think of him when out last Friday as it was his videos that showed me I could capture the night sky with an ordinary camera.
Also like you Richard I was facing south despite being at 55° north.

  • @scottwbennett

You should point out that you've "created" these video "shots". It is clear that the Aurora is static while you a wandering around the frame going on about how amazing it looks! The aurora is dynamic, I've been photographing and filming for many years too. I did see if with my own eyes and did photograph it here in Tasmania and no doubt it was the brightest and most powerful I've ever seen!

Disagree - yes, auroras are usually moving, but last week I just watched the sky glowing a steady red/
orange, only dimming twice for a moment, for 20 minutes. Not everything in nature is a constant.

But at the same time I’m so very glad that so many people were able to witness such a spectacular event! The people who were parked next to Suz and I brought their kids out to witness it. They were not photographers. But they were in awe of what they saw. I didn’t get stunning compositions like you did. But very grateful for the images that I did capture. Richard simply magnificent photos, the panoramas of the Silos, its silhouette and the other photos are fantastic, it was a memorable night across the planet. On Friday morning, I and 3 friends moved 260km south to the darkest area of Portuga, during dinner, which was still daylight, one of my friends and I received an alert about the Northern Lights, but we didn't pay much attention because we thought they were only for northern Europe, when we arrived at our location to photograph (Noudar Castle) I was the first to take a photo and I was incredulous with the white balance that I had put on the camera, the entire landscape was Pink and Red, but no, it was really a gigantic Northern Lights that reached 37º Latitude, we stayed taking photos until the sun rose.
Thank you for sharing this magnificent Southern night with us, a hug Richard. Beautiful tribute to Alyn 👏🙏

Great adventure! Thanks for bringing us along. The red aurora you saw to the west in Orion is called a SAR (Stable Auroral Red) arc. They are typically featureless and usually sub-visual and always equatorward (north in your case) of the main aurora. Alex Cherney got some nice shots from the Great Ocean Road. SARs have been known to evolve into STEVE arcs, though I don’t think we heard of any STEVE sightings from either the north or south this night. But when you get a show of aurora do check elsewhere in the sky for other arcs. You might not see them but the camera can pick them up, even just on the live view screen. Cheers!

Hi Richard!!! I could feel your joy and happiness, as the sky was on fire!!! The photos are just stunning! I know Alyn would love to have been there to see that!!! I don't know if you spotted it or not but you got a shooting star at about 8:25 on the timer. Look in the upper left corner. I looked to see if anyone else saw it in the comments, I did not read them all. From what I saw no one mentioned it. I hope I get to see this beautiful sky display at some point in my life time. That you for the video!!!

You gotta be in it to win it! I would had to drive 3 hours to get clear skies, but I did manage to get 20 minutes of clear skies and made a 50 frame Timelapse in a light polluted area. Not nearly as intense as your image, in skies that were much darker than where I am.

We were at the beach with HUNDREDS if not thousands of people all looking up at the sky and when the aurora peaked everyone cheered, it was such a surreal moment to see everyone gather to watch this, once in a lifetime indeed. I was up 24 hours from work and this yet the joy kept me up haha!
omg you even caught the milky way on that first image!
