One tip not mentioned is look up reading order. The story doesn't always follow Batman #1, #2, #3, etc. It could be Batman #2, Detective comics #7, Batman and Robin # 4.
Both series are canon. I haven't read either personally so I don't know if Batman is currently in Detective Comics. He usually is. I wouldn't worry much about it though since the Batman book seems to be mostly self-contained. With just small references to stuff in other books.
Honestly i find the whole "split stories into different books" thing to be very confusing. Stories shoild stay within there own series. They should do batman for batman stories, det.comics for one shot batman stories or stories for other characters (seriously, it don't gotta be all batman) and batman and robin for stories about the 2 but seprate from the other stories. They should also have a timeline in each comic to exain where each story goes in relation to batman stories and and the greater dc universe. All of this can apply to action comics and superman and basically any other character in dc or marvel.
Once you have started reading comics don't be afraid to call yourself a comic book fan. the label of comic book fan isn't something that you get with the amount of comic books you read. I've been reading them for years now and the fact is that's the point of view of somebody who's been reading comics only for a couple weeks is just as valid as my point of view to me. And also remember that when criticizing a comic book character, that every character is somebody's favorite character so be respectful. I've seen people criticize Aquaman based solely on a bunch of Saturday night live sketches without actually reading a single book. So be respectful of other people's opinions.
Let me start by saying, I'm 66 years old. Yeah, old as dirt. When I was a kid, there were no comic shops at all. Comics were found at grocery stores, in the magazine section. One grocery store in particular, in my home town, had a small area set aside for kids to sit while Mom shopped. The store would put new comics on the table for us each week. This was my introduction to the wonderful world of comics. Now, so many years later, I still collect comics, have sold off three whole collections and currently have approx 65,000 comics, with just a few left over from the 1960s. I truly believe that reading comics has made my reading skills better than they might have been.
I’m 38 yrs old and started reading comics because of the dark knight trilogy... I wish I had gotten into it so much earlier because this is by far my favorite hobby... Great video!

I've been away from Variant for a while. Tell me about this "new" background. I absolutely love it! Is it real of a projection? You'll be surprised by how many people there are just like you.
With the CW Crisis on infinite earths crossover released, Can you do history of Pariah, Harbinger, Ryan Choi, Dr Destiny, Psycho Pirate, Monitor and Spectre?
I can tell you that Ryan Choi became the atom after this pen pal/mentor ray Palmer is kidnapped and is given the size changing belt but it’s retconned where ray Palmer didn’t know about him and it was a ploy by a villian
I would add that new comic book readers check their local library as well. They carry many trades and graphic novels. You can also request material from other libraries. Good way to read some comics free.
Excellent tips. I have been collecting comics for 40 yrs. now. I got started b/c a classmate brought in a few of his comics & I wanted what he had so I got my first comicbook from Walgreens. This was before social media & the influx of comicbook shops. After all these years of collecting, the thrill hasn't faded & I'm still learning.
I'd also recommend looking in your local library. Most libraries have graphic novel sections. It's free, so you're not out any money, so it's great way to test the waters. Sure, you might not find the same selection as you would in a comic book shop, but you'll find tons of graphic novels that contain full story arcs, and usually the offerings are enough to give you some idea of whether or not you're remotely interested in the character, artwork, or writing.
Another tip I would say is to join something like reddit or discord and find a server revolving around comics.i was only a little bit into comics before a friend invited me to a comic server they're in on discord and it was a huge help to have a group of people to discuss and learn from.
I started with the walking dead, recommend everyone does the same. It's an amazing and long story with a lot of impact and a good message. It's good for people who don't feel the superhero thing or people that don't know where to start. It's a way to see if you like comics and the way the medium tells an emotional bittersweet story. (For dc or marvel definitly look up the reading order by just typing "reading order (character) or (event) or (story arc)" when you want to read all new 52 batman comics in order for instance. It tells you what issues to read when so you dont get it in the wrong order or get story archs spoiled.
I actually started reading comic books in the mid and late 1970s. For me, it started with the animated Super Friends and Shazam. And then Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman and Christopher Reeves' Superman really piqued my interest. I read the first five years of The New Teen Titans! Yes, I had issue one, which my mother, without my permission, gave away (!!!!) I stopped reading in the fall of 1985 when I started college: I could no longer afford it and did not have the time. After that I only kept up with the important stuff like the death of Superman and, of course, movies and television shows. I got back into reading comics regularly when I was 44 years old and DC relaunched with the New 52. I forgot how much I had missed it. I caught up with a lot of stories using many of the recommendations noted in this video as well as watching Variant Comics (when I first discovered your channel, I thought you guys were broadcasting from a physical comic book store!) This is a great video (as always)----thank you for posting!
Thanks, Arris!!! Great video! I just bought 20 comics at my local comic book store, in Sarasota, Florida. Darkside Comics. They have a website and Facebook page. I'm glad you gave the tip on Comixology. As you said, without getting the Trades, first, the reader will end up in middle of a story arc. You have a subscriber! Excelsior and because he's Batman, I'm a 54 year old really excited to dive in!
My problem is I'm eclectic ! a hoarder, and I don't read comics I just like the cover art ! So I'm thinking I should stop buying comics and start buying original art. Thanks for helping me find my way .
I started collecting with the new Thor from Donny Cates. It’s now three years later and I have a pull list of about ten to fifteen comics a month depending on limited series and whatnot. I’ve now got four comic boxes full and around forty trades and I’m loving this hobby.
Great video idea! I'd say I'm a relatively new comic book reader (1 year). I've always loved the movies and watched people recapping comics like Comicstorian, but last year I started actually reading them. I'd also like for you to do more lists or things like this regarding comics. Top 10 comics of 2019, Top 10 dark comics, Top 10 Superman comics etc
I think another great tip is to check with your local library. Mine has tons of comics in the form of ebooks, 100% for free. This is a great option for people who have limited funds but still want to read comics.
This was a cool vid. When I got into this world of comics fully, I asked a lot of questions, looked up vids, comments etc. It took a lot time and dedication. Was able to find my own LCS and been in there ever since almost weekly (crazy, I know) making friends. But as I say, "if your into something be into it." When I finally had the opportunity DC Rebirth came at the right time and my love for these characters grew even more, truly understating them, and their world. (Comics is the biggest medium out there, you don't have to follow just DC and Marvel superheroing. You have plenty of other genres and publishers). Now, sometimes I do feel like even I can turn into a toxic comic fan and for that I apologize. But when I see a person speak on a character they know absolutely nothing about it does bother me. Call what you see or maybe call it passion. But I dislike when a person who has never picked up a single storyline spew inconsistencies about a character scaring him/her off from someone new who maybe missing out. Example, Superman. He's lasted a 1k issues and been around for 80 plus years with classic storylines for a reason. READ people. Make your own judgment, get your own unbiased info from the source. Movies and TV only tell so much. Anyways, sorry for the rant. I'm mostly a DC guy whose a huge fan of Superman and Marvel just for the X-Men.
Holy Comics!! Thank you So much for those tips! Also thank you for pointing out that SOME comic book stores are very judgmental and toxic when it comes to amateur readers or those starting to get into comics. It’s sad really because some think we are not fans just because We don’t own EVERY title or a regular customer. Which is another reason why I am intimidated to even go to a comic con dressed up as one of my fav characters. BUT these tips helped!! You guys are awesome at Variant!!

I’m not necessarily a new comic book fan, but I do still have some issues trying to keep up with everything, since my nearest comic book shop is 30 minutes away. So these tips are very much appreciated.
Another tip to find physical comics is to look for a used bookstore since they usually have an entire section dedicated to Comics while you may not find the exact comic you want you can probably find some good deals on a lot of great comics and may even find some great comics you would have never heard about otherwise
I got into comics from reading Injustice: Gods Among Us, it’s good for starting out I think. I was watching the animated shows for DC growing up, so yeahhh
I tend to think when collecting individual issues of comics deciding how far back you want to go matters as in some of the older comics cost more, and the writing and drawing was different depending on the era.
I say, skip single issues completely. Especially physical single issues. Amazon is your best option for discounted trades. Only buy single issues (physical or digital) if you only want one or two issues from a trade, it's a oneshot, or the issues would be cheaper than the trade.
My favorite writer is Claudio Sanchez. I started reading the Amory Wars because I'm a huge Coheed and Cambria fan and it is my favorite comic series I've ever read. Anyone who likes space scifi type stuff should read it
I’m soo glad you posted this . I’ve always been a fan of the superhero cartoons and movies. It wasn’t until I start watching The Big Bang Theory that made me wanna read comics. I went to a comic book store and I asked the guy behind the counter how do I get interested in reading comics. He told me just go on Wikipedia. I started going to the comic book store in Free Comic Book Day . I would get free comics and buy discounted books like “Batman Road to No Mans Land”. I also have an account with ComiXology. I love that service . 👍👍👍👍👍
Ive just got a job now so i can finally afford them and just dont know where to start especially when im familiar with so many stories and love so many characters
Been reading comics for probably 7-8 years now. My very first story was Blackest Night. My aunt recommended it to me when they visited. My first graphic novel was Secret Invasion (just imagine the confusion on my part). Prior to that, I would always read Wiki pages. Nowadays, I have a bookshelf filled with novels and a drawer full of comics. I also have posters and action figures.
More and more I'm convinced this guy is not all he talks, for a guy that has been reading comics since "he could read" he sure says it a lot, plus at a con a kid was watching one of his videos and the guy that was behind me said he knew arris and that he didn't read comics until late 2000's
I’ve always been into superheros but never read comics until into the spider verse came out. Loved the movie so much and wanted to see more miles morales. Been reading comics for a year now.
Tip for reading more comics is to leverage your local library for trades, I've read so many more comics because of It, and libraries are completely free. Every stop I make there I usually have around 10 trades, about $17 each, so it saves you so much money
I was into comics first, although the Spider-Man and F4 cartoons in the 80's is likely what got me into the characters. I'm a bit older, so all we had was the Howard the Duck movie and that old Captain America one when I was a kid (Loved the Michael Keaton Batman films as well)
For someone getting in with limited income a free option is an app called Hoopla. I know in my area (south shore MA) its tied in with my library. So while I collect a ton I can still read on the go too. Get 4 books a month and they've done a great job of keeping up to date on new books.
I started Collecting Comic Books because when I head about the “Energon Universe” by Skybound which included of course, Transformers, G.I Joe Hero DUKE, the villain Cobra Commander and a new one part of this shared Universe, Void Rivals, I started to collect it
The digital ones help me out a lot considering that I live in the country where western comic books are not mainstream media. The printed versions are almost always imported thus very expensive and more for collectable purposes than actual reading.
Do you think you guys might do a video on how to get a job in comics like you have? Cos I love comics/nerd culture and would really like a job doing it in some way
This is actually very helpful, But since I don't have a Comic Shop around Me it might be better for Me to get Digital comics instead 😁, Thank You So very much for The Help
Image, image is my pick. Because image comics tend to have good short series and the image firsts where you get the first issue for $1. Also they seem more approachable to me because some people would think that you need to know everything about a character to start reading comics ( mainly DC and marvel).
New readers need to be aware that characters that are seen in the big screen or television series are not truely an interpretation of what their characteristics and personalities are in the comic books. Therefore do not be upset disappointed of the heroes you enjoy in one media is not the same in another, this can be good or bad depending what the reader enjoys.
Comicbook Fan yup! Just have fun with it. Ezra millers flash comes to mind. He’s not even close to the comic version but you know what? I have fun and enjoy it regardless.
I’m not exactly new to the comic book game, but Im not yet at the expert tier. I’ve had a few years into the game and I really love the community at least locally. I fell for Ghost Spider/ SpiderGwen, and I love The Flash. I know some print comics will have the digital version as well which I love that feature too.
One tip not mentioned is look up reading order. The story doesn't always follow Batman #1, #2, #3, etc. It could be Batman #2, Detective comics #7, Batman and Robin # 4.
Oh yeah cause it may be the same character but depending on the title/subtitle there s a whole other differences in that too

You'll be surprised by how many people there are just like you.
Thanks for this. I've been wanting to start since forever but didn't know when and where to start
Just now getting into comics at the age of 27, these tips are appreciated. I think I'm hooked.
DC Rebirth was where I started reading comics :)
Me too
@@MOHAVEAMER where do u read your comics
Tell me the reading order please
Me too
@@mohammedazam6562 I started with the flash but I recommend to start reading dc universe rebirth and then after that read whatever character you want
Another tip: Check out your local library. Many titles are included in their digital offerings like through Hoopla.
FYI most libraries have trades available.
I caught up with a lot of stories using many of the recommendations noted in this video as well as watching Variant Comics (when I first discovered your channel, I thought you guys were broadcasting from a physical comic book store!) This is a great video (as always)----thank you for posting!
i’m 18 and now want to get into reading comics. i managed to get a hold of #1 1984 of the west coast avengers and i like it
Thanks, Arris!!!
Epic collection from marvel is a good way to start reading comics they are a little expensive but worth it you Get 18 issues and sometimes 2+issues
I’m new to reading comics and find this channel very helpful for me with getting into comics.I appreciate videos like this and find them very helpful.I would like to see more in the future similar to this one.Like more about stuff with getting into comics and helpful tips for new readers.Thanx again and great video and channel.Keep up the great content also. 😁😁😁
I’m coming from WandaVision she’s my fav marvel character and I wanna read house of M😁. I read manga but never read comic
I would also recommend the original run of West coast avengers
This video is the type of video that plays at a GameStop
(I don’t mean that In a bad way this video is really good)
It is lol
Please try to purchase comics from your local comic book stores as much as you can though :)
“2020’s still fresh”
Covid: howdy partner
I’m not necessarily a new comic book fan, but I do still have some issues trying to keep up with everything, since my nearest comic book shop is 30 minutes away. So these tips are very much appreciated.
What do you think of the Joker in MortalKombat?
He was great in MK vs DC
Another tip to find physical comics is to look for a used bookstore since they usually have an entire section dedicated to Comics while you may not find the exact comic you want you can probably find some good deals on a lot of great comics and may even find some great comics you would have never heard about otherwise
I’m so glad you guys are back! 😄
I got into comics from reading Injustice: Gods Among Us, it’s good for starting out I think. I was watching the animated shows for DC growing up, so yeahhh
Marvel unlimited is actually $10 a month a little more expensive then dc universe
Was looking for this comment lol
In my opinion I feel like Comixology Unlimited is more worth it
I tend to think when collecting individual issues of comics deciding how far back you want to go matters as in some of the older comics cost more, and the writing and drawing was different depending on the era.
I say, skip single issues completely. Especially physical single issues. Amazon is your best option for discounted trades. Only buy single issues (physical or digital) if you only want one or two issues from a trade, it's a oneshot, or the issues would be cheaper than the trade.
Unless it’s a dollar comic
My favorite writer is Claudio Sanchez. I started reading the Amory Wars because I'm a huge Coheed and Cambria fan and it is my favorite comic series I've ever read. Anyone who likes space scifi type stuff should read it
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! I needed this advice, well done video!
Thank you so much, Variantt for thissss
I’m soo glad you posted this . I’ve always been a fan of the superhero cartoons and movies. It wasn’t until I start watching The Big Bang Theory that made me wanna read comics. I went to a comic book store and I asked the guy behind the counter how do I get interested in reading comics. He told me just go on Wikipedia. I started going to the comic book store in Free Comic Book Day . I would get free comics and buy discounted books like “Batman Road to No Mans Land”. I also have an account with ComiXology. I love that service . 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for the tips. I enjoy reading comic books but sometimes find the format hard to follow. I am still learning how to appreciate them.
I used to only lightly dabble but a few months ago i started reading more and more. These tips are great
Ive just got a job now so i can finally afford them and just dont know where to start especially when im familiar with so many stories and love so many characters
Thank u Arris , always LOVED comics and wanted to into them but didn't know where to start
Great tips, very helpful!
Toygalaxy and Variant Nation are also must watch shows. I know alot and I'm always learning with these two shows.
I was into comics first, although the Spider-Man and F4 cartoons in the 80's is likely what got me into the characters. I'm a bit older, so all we had was the Howard the Duck movie and that old Captain America one when I was a kid (Loved the Michael Keaton Batman films as well)
Biggest tip i needed to understand before getting in was the difference between issues volumes compeniums etc
soooooooo glad you are addressing this! Thanks guys!
I've been reading graphic novels for quite a few years now and I still find videos like this very helpful
For someone getting in with limited income a free option is an app called Hoopla. I know in my area (south shore MA) its tied in with my library. So while I collect a ton I can still read on the go too. Get 4 books a month and they've done a great job of keeping up to date on new books.
Reading comics on the Surface Duo is awesome.
Thanks for tips. 👌
Be sure to check your library. Mine has a bunch of trades and graphic novels.
It's so cool you're back
Do you think you guys might do a video on how to get a job in comics like you have? Cos I love comics/nerd culture and would really like a job doing it in some way
Batman animated series and the Tim Burton movies is what did it for me too. I also had a few Adventures of Superman VHS !!
This was so helpful, I've been wanting to start reading comics for the longest time! Thank u :)
Thanks for the tips. This really helped. 👍
11. You don't just have to read the boring stuff from DC & Marvel.
Very true.
Spider-Man is by far my favorite comic hero, but my actual favorite comic is The Crow.
haha, my 11 was "Not all comics are about Super Heroes"
Whoever said marvel and dc were boring?...
Getting excited for The Batman inspired me to get interested in comics and buy Year One today
Hi. what do you recommend reading after Year One?
This is actually very helpful, But since I don't have a Comic Shop around Me it might be better for Me to get Digital comics instead 😁, Thank You So very much for The Help
Image, image is my pick. Because image comics tend to have good short series and the image firsts where you get the first issue for $1. Also they seem more approachable to me because some people would think that you need to know everything about a character to start reading comics ( mainly DC and marvel).
Id like to see an intro to manga. Manga is the medium that introduced reading to me.
Wish I wasn’t judged for reading comics. I’m glad this Chanel exists
“2020 is still nice and fresh” I actually shed a tear😭
You will help lots of people Arris! Good job!
I always recommend invincible for beginners as that to me was always the gateway of getting into comics
I'd add one more tip, also give a look to Image Comics website and the summary of their series, there's a bunch of new ones every month
