Really detailed video, I’ve read Manga for the longest time and when I was trying to get into comics, I was confused where to start, what are runs, different issues, etc etc but your video clears a lot of the stuff, if not all of them.
the reason why I came to this video is because I just got a crate of old batman comics and I'm really excited to read them and I think I have a few legends of the dark knight comics that I saw in the crate to.
This is actually super helpful cause I was talking with my friend about how hard it is getting into comics. I'm gonna try and do this for The Punisher and Moonknight since I've been really keen on getting to read there stuff.
I love moon knight, I’d recommend probably reading him digitally if you like digitally just because a lot of his stuff is out of print and will be a little hard to find physically for a reasonable price. There are things you can find, and you can also just wait for the stuff you want to read to be back in print like I am
I know I’m two years late, but thanks for this! So many people have videos like this, but yours is actually helpful! Especially for the enthusiastic beginner. Much appreciated.
Thank you for making this less daunting! I've been so excited and interested in reading comics, but also felt scared and loss on where to start since there's a LOT of content to potentially read. i wasnt sure if there was a "right" way to start-like from the *beginning!* this breaks it down nicely and i now know what to do :3c
I enjoy reading chunks of runs, going back and forth between and within series, and then filling in the blanks through my memory and through reading those blanks if I haven't. A good story is a good story, you don't need a 60 year background for the character. I also always read 3 to 6 things at the same time, alternating by mood or room (no kidding there, I have my heavier books lying in different rooms until read.
wow, I think your way of introducing this is the best one I have seen yet! There is an overwhelming amount of characters, timelines, universes, etc. You presented the most enjoyable and no-pressure way to get into the hobby :D thanks!
My journey with DC was interesting. I started with Haunted Knight at a local shop and then bought along Halloween and Dark Victory. I loved Sale’s art and that led me to Superman for All Seasons. Then I found Sandman and couldn’t get enough. V for Vendetta was also amazing. For Marvel I bought a Civil War hardcover, the Marvel Knights color ómnibus and the Infinity Gauntlet omnibus.
Thank you. As an avid manga reader I've always been confused as to where to start with American comics. This helped a lot. I've always liked the X-men movies so I'm going to start with those and add those to my collection.
Great video, lots of good take aways here. I’ve been looking into getting into the Fantastic Four, so I might check out the run you mentioned. Something I found helpful when getting into western comics was simply going to comic shops and book stores instead of looking at everything online. Looking around and having something jump out at you is a great feeling. That’s how I found Middle West by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona, which is a great book.
This was extremely helpful! I started with manga as a teen but I've been reading western comics off and on since 2014. My wife has solely read manga for years. She likes concise origin stories, and single timelines. I've been looking for a way to get back into comics, and she's been interested in at least starting a few western comics so she can catch all those marvel and dc references when watching movies and shows.
Idk I just grab a comic of what series I really enjoyed growing up and then expand my interest. Like I first started with Batman comics then I went to x men series, then much more. Currently I’m reading comics within the watchmen universe because I loved the main comic so much so like I started going to the before watchmen stuff or after watchmen stuff like the Rorschach series that came out last year ( my favorite character in watchmen)
Amazing video! Loved how you gave just the right amount of specificity while also acknowledging how to apply it to any writer/artist/character/run. I myself have always director chased when I watch movies. Often watching a director’s entire catalog after watching 1 movie. And I think it appeals even more so here because of how daunting comics can be.
I have been collecting manga for most of the last decade, for some reason I just never looked into comics, there was always way to much manga to buy. As I get older I find myself more interested in western stuff more. Thanks for the guide.
thank you for making this video. every other video I've found on the subject essentially boiled down to top ten comic lists rather than explaining from the ground up not only the concepts of runs, but also suggestions on how to continue to read and explore comics /on your own/, which is what I always struggled with All these comics felt so huge and scary to read before, but your kind way of speaking and gentle encouragement has finally gotten me to try reading the Tom King's run of Mister Miracle. I've heard before that I should read a lot of other comics to fully appreciate it and such, but I've done more research and found just as many saying it's fine to jump in blind. Thank you!
you really helped me with that video thank you very much! i always try to start reading marvel and DC comics but i just can't! everything is so wide and large and here you are again with another great video, helping me to choose exactly what i want and how! i really can't thank you enough your videos are always so useful to me and teaches me a lot on manga and comics! you are my favorite youtuber and absolutely underrated as hell!
Well if this isnt endorsing the phrase 'buy what you like' i dont know what is. Excellent. This is what collecting should be. A truly passionate interest in the subject. Rather than financial speculation. Bravo.
Here because I've been trying to force myself to read older Marvel titles (that others love) but I just have not had the patience or interest in the writing. You gave some great advice about personalizing our tastes and paying attention to what we're drawn to when we read. Thank you!! I have been in love with Wanda Maximoff since I was a little kid in the 2000s and seeing her on X-Men Evolution, then the MCU, I've been really craving some stories about complicated female characters with depth and now after watching this, I'm gonna give myself permission to bounce around instead of feeling pressured to read everything in chronological order!
FINALLY somebody who talks about READING comics. It took me so long to find a video like this and I'm so glad I did. Beautiful video. Explained everything so well and made me REALLY want to pick up a new comic. :) My wallet is not gonna like this😵💫
8 minutes into this video and i understand so much more now lol, as a manga reader i’m so confused how to pick up a comic but this helped exponentially!!!
Thanks for this video. I started on a popular Marvel jumping on point and following the continuity via a complete reading guide and marvel unlimited (tho not everything of course) through loads of events and - it’s REALLY boring! Constantly jumping from one title to the next, never really getting into anything, worrying that I was missing something. Think I’m gonna try worrying less about the continuity and just enjoy individual runs.
Good example for me is Thor. I read first 20 issues of Thor/Journey into Mystery. Boring, dull, hated it. Read Walt Simonsons Thor run and it’s probably my favorite comic book run ever
If you like female led series try comics like Monstress, Something is Killing the Children, Paper Girls, Rachel Rising, Lady Killer, Little Bird, I Kill Giants, The Me You Love in The Dark, Gun Honey, Sunstone, Strangers in Paradise.
Wow very helpful. I never got into comics until now. I started by saying I like dc. I want to read Batman. Then got overwhelmed. After following the advice I settled on the first 3 volumes of the new 52 Scott Snyder 2011-2016 run. I feel like I will try to read and collect all the volumes from those years. Then move on from there. Thanks!
This video has eased some of my anxieties. I personally care about the stories and the writing (and the art, of course) more than I do the specific characters; and I don't now feel I have to think about what single issues I want to jump into-as I don't care for them: I'm just going to collect collected editions, ones I know are well written and well designed and are to my taste; and I can also simply prioritise books by the creative teams themselves, as that is what I value. My concern was that I HAD to just read, say, Spiderman simply because he interests me. No: I can read just the great stories about him-because that is what interests me. And the same for a writer, such as Alan Moore: I like his writing style, so I'll follow him and read more of his stuff, regardless of the characters/heroes. I don't know why, but this wasn't so obvious to me. Thanks for the video and clearing all this up :)
Great advice and points on how and where to start reading comics. when i started i read Essex County by jeff lemire, the reason i read that book was because Essex county was going to be made into a tv series and i wanted to read the source material before watching the show and I really enjoyed the book so much i decided to find more comics and graphic novels by jeff lemire and he basically became my favourite writer and artist, now i look for comic books that are by jeff lemire whether hes the writer, artist or both, what i love about jeff lemire comics and graphic novels where he only does the writing is that i get see a new comic artist and admire the artwork and jeff has partnered with many great comic book artists like Dustin Nguyen,Andrea Sorrention, Emi Lenox and many other and gives me more appreciation and admiration for comic book art by different artists and seek out more of their works which gives me more comics and graphic novels to read
Since we’re back in the X-Men tv series or I started reading the X-Men from top to bottom, I’m on issue 16 so far! As a kid, I never read the comics I knew of the characters but never read the comics never thought to. I just looked at the TV and was all struck by Spider-Man Batman wonder woman the Incredible Hulk and I finally got introduced to the X-Men and the 90s and I was 20 something
One of the very few videos that doesn't talk about speculation? SOLD! You earned my sub man. This video helped me out so much. Just ordered Batman Year One and X-Men Essentials Vol 1. Ready to get started!
This was great and really informative. Don’t get me wrong, I’m already a comic reader (although it’s mostly Marvel, I need to get further into DC) but this did help by causing me to take a look into the writer itself, more so than the character.
Ohhhh, so comic books are like relaunch Star Trek books. No one single place to start, interconnected storylines between series, and a myriad of writers over the decades. Very helpful video for someone who knows zip about comics :)
Not all are like that, there are alot that simple linear stories done by one team that ends, such as Walking Dead, Invincible, Umbrella Academy, Black Science, Saga and much more.
Just like you mention, if you started from manga, its much easier to go straight to Image Comics or Boom Studios. That's what I did. Self contained, just buy the collected edition paperback or in beautiful ( but usually OoP) hardcovers. East of West is such a great choice too. Love the story and the art is beautiful.
Like anime but cannot read Manga.. Reading it backwards is hard for me. Hated East of West. Bored me. Sold mine. Saga is overrated. Shock value woke book. Does not hold back with twists and deaths. I give it that
Not a character or writer specific suggestion but I would love to hear your favorite genre specific titles. Like what are the best horror titles to get into or what are the best crime comics?

Crime/Detective: Criminal, Fatale, Kill or Be Killed, Scene of the Crime, 100 Bullets, Cruel Summer, The Fade Out, Chew. Fantasy: Sandman, Fables, Saga, Monstress, Once & Future, Die, Klaus, Rat Queens, Bone, Birthright, We 3. Post-Apocalyptic: The Walking Dead, Y the last man, Sweet Tooth, DMZ, Little Bird. Slice of Life: Royal City, Essex County, Giant Days, Scott Pilgrim. Scifi: East of West, Descender/Ascender(sequel), Black Science, Low, Tokyo Ghost, Seven to Eternity, Paper Girls, Transmetropolitan. Political: V for Vendetta, Ex Machina, Maus, Scalped. Romance: Strangers in Paradise, Sunstone, Alex + Ada, Sweet Paprika. Historical/War: These Savage Shores, Out of the Blue, Out. Action: Kaiju Score, Deadly Class, American Ronin, Fight Girls.

New to comic book reading but it’s basically branching off of other authors, characters, side characters, art styles, etc… literally exploring the multiverse.
Omg, I appreciate you making this video. I just got into comics and been struggling to learn how it all works, if to buy physical or digital. This video has been very very helpful.
One thing I didn't like at all when I started reading american comics is the constant change of artists in the series (DC and Marvel mostly). Also there's no longer any good source (since comicbookdb went offline) to keep track of your favorite artist. What's he/she working on right now, what's upcoming, what did they do recently since I last looked them up etc. Or tracking down a new favorite's previous work. Those sources that are out there list one million issues, but 99,9 % of their "work" is one of the ten billion variants on a book only.
I think the constantly changing artists is a mixed bag similar to the constantly changing writers, if there’s one you don’t like they won’t be on it forever, but if there’s one you do like, then sadly they will also not be on it forever. I appreciate it when there’s a decently long run with one artist and writer, like Snyder and capullo’s Batman, or the main series of hellboy (it does switch artists, but most of it is Mike mignola or at least the artist working with him tries to emulate his style)
Been reading comics for years. Go for what I like. Get runs, ominbus and trade paperbacks. Big collection. Love anime but never read a Manga. Go for the top stories like you said. Hit or miss. Long Halloween, Hush, Deadly Class and others. Love them. Grant Morrison Batman run not a big fan and others. Miss. Bendis run was good on Daredevil. You made some good points. Ii do mostly what you said. Good review man

Hope I didn't go over board, lol, alot of these are finished but some are still ongoing, they're all linear stories that aren't a part of big universe so they should be just like how you read manga.
How to read comics: start at page 10 then go to page 20 then go to page 1 thrn go to page 100 after that go to issue number 1000.
How to read Manga: start at page 1 chapter 1.
Gotham by Gaslight and Project Superpower are my favs.
I don't know much about comics. I just saw someone purchasing Sandman and it looked very interesting
Sandman’s awesome!, one of my favs, but I do think you should start with the bigger editions since it starts off slow
just picked up batman year one, so pumped to start it up
I know I’m two years late, but thanks for this!
I'd love to see beginners guides on Hulk, Wolverine, Spiderman and Silver Surfer!
Now, this is a good vid.
Thanks for the info, very well explained! I’m beginning to collect comics and am trying to find which ones i’m interested in reading and collecting.
This is one of the very best videos I’ve seen done on any topic on TH-cam. Period. Very informative. Great advice. Well done.
This was a very liberating and fun video as a complete beginner. Thanks man!
Great video! I'm just starting to get into comic books at 35 and this really helped!
wow, I think your way of introducing this is the best one I have seen yet! There is an overwhelming amount of characters, timelines, universes, etc. You presented the most enjoyable and no-pressure way to get into the hobby :D thanks!
Love this video! I’m going to NYC this weekend and plan on picking up some of my first comics while I’m there, this vid was a great help!
I started with Batman dark night returns and I was hooked. I was surprised on how much I enjoyed a comic book. I had no idea.
Hi, do you collect art?
I love Harley Quinn, her character got me into in comics
This was extremely helpful! I started with manga as a teen but I've been reading western comics off and on since 2014. My wife has solely read manga for years. She likes concise origin stories, and single timelines. I've been looking for a way to get back into comics, and she's been interested in at least starting a few western comics so she can catch all those marvel and dc references when watching movies and shows.
Hi, do you collect art?
Idk I just grab a comic of what series I really enjoyed growing up and then expand my interest. Like I first started with Batman comics then I went to x men series, then much more. Currently I’m reading comics within the watchmen universe because I loved the main comic so much so like I started going to the before watchmen stuff or after watchmen stuff like the Rorschach series that came out last year ( my favorite character in watchmen)
This was a very educational video. Although I got into comics for the characters and not so much the creative teams.
Hi, do you collect art?
thank you for making this video. every other video I've found on the subject essentially boiled down to top ten comic lists rather than explaining from the ground up not only the concepts of runs, but also suggestions on how to continue to read and explore comics /on your own/, which is what I always struggled with
All these comics felt so huge and scary to read before, but your kind way of speaking and gentle encouragement has finally gotten me to try reading the Tom King's run of Mister Miracle.
Hi, do you collect art?
That intro gets me everytime
My wallet is not gonna like this😵💫
8 minutes into this video and i understand so much more now lol, as a manga reader i’m so confused how to pick up a comic but this helped exponentially!!!
always been curious about where to start. I am so used to manga so this is a lot different. Thanks for the help!
you deserve a mil subs mate.
Definitely very interested in xmen, scarlet witch, & other female led series :)
If you like female led series try comics like Monstress, Something is Killing the Children, Paper Girls, Rachel Rising, Lady Killer, Little Bird, I Kill Giants, The Me You Love in The Dark, Gun Honey, Sunstone, Strangers in Paradise.
Hi, do you collect art?
I just looked at the TV and was all struck by Spider-Man Batman wonder woman the Incredible Hulk and I finally got introduced to the X-Men and the 90s and I was 20 something
this is exactly the video i've been looking for.
One of the very few videos that doesn't talk about speculation? SOLD! You earned my sub man. This video helped me out so much. Just ordered Batman Year One and X-Men Essentials Vol 1. Ready to get started!
Thanks for the help this video really helped me out especially from someone who is transitioning from manga to comics lol
I've always wondered how comics work ... Interesting!
This was great and really informative. Don’t get me wrong, I’m already a comic reader (although it’s mostly Marvel, I need to get further into DC) but this did help by causing me to take a look into the writer itself, more so than the character.
Thank you, first video on the subject that is quite clear and not overwhelming.
Have you read Saga?
Like anime but cannot read Manga.. Reading it backwards is hard for me. Hated East of West. Bored me. Sold mine. Saga is overrated. Shock value woke book. Does not hold back with twists and deaths. I give it that
Hi, do you collect art?
East of West bored me. Nice art but story was zzzzz . Lost internet
Not a character or writer specific suggestion but I would love to hear your favorite genre specific titles. Like what are the best horror titles to get into or what are the best crime comics?
Horror: Gideon Falls, From Hell, Locke & Key, Wytches, Something is Killing the Children, Stray Dogs, The Department of Truth, Outcast.
Crime/Detective: Criminal, Fatale, Kill or Be Killed, Scene of the Crime, 100 Bullets, Cruel Summer, The Fade Out, Chew.
Fantasy: Sandman, Fables, Saga, Monstress, Once & Future, Die, Klaus, Rat Queens, Bone, Birthright, We 3.
Post-Apocalyptic: The Walking Dead, Y the last man, Sweet Tooth, DMZ, Little Bird.
Slice of Life: Royal City, Essex County, Giant Days, Scott Pilgrim.
Scifi: East of West, Descender/Ascender(sequel), Black Science, Low, Tokyo Ghost, Seven to Eternity, Paper Girls, Transmetropolitan.
Political: V for Vendetta, Ex Machina, Maus, Scalped.
Romance: Strangers in Paradise, Sunstone, Alex + Ada, Sweet Paprika.
Historical/War: These Savage Shores, Out of the Blue, Out.
Action: Kaiju Score, Deadly Class, American Ronin, Fight Girls.
Great video. Subbed 👍 Will check out more of your other videos.
I'm looking to start reading Batman and Spider-man, initially. Once I've got into a groove, I'm looking forward to getting into X-Men and Fantastic Four, also.
THANKYOU!! This is exactly what i was looking for!
Some writers off the top of my head that are always on my watch list for new comicbook fans: Jonathan Hickman, Chip Zdarsky, Mark Waid, Gail Simone, Grant Morrison, Peter J. Tomasi, Ryan North, Jeremy Adams, J. M. DeMatteis, J. M. Straczynski
Some artists on my list: Dan Mora, Marco Checchetto, Jorge Jimenez, Chris Samnee, Peach Momoko, Doc Shaner
I am definitely most interested in reading more spiderman
Great video Ryley! Very cool tips, that I'll keep in mind myself.
Would be cool if you ever decided to make read-alongs with people, be it of manga or comics and discussing some series bite by bite. Just an idea that a lot of booktubers do with books and makes me read more stuff!
I’m definitely trying to expand outside of my general superhero stuff because I’ve been the biggest Batman fanboy for the longest time and I need to branch out
Great video, thanks! :) I recently really did a deep-dive into Batman, mainly Dark Knight Universe but I'm also reading the TP 25th anniversary editions of the KnightFall saga at the moment. Soon, I'm gonna start reading Green Lantern, Old Man Logan, and Swamp Thing!
Please never stop using this intro. It’s amazing!
I was a Spider-Man fan from the 90s and never had access to comics until my early 20s so when I discovered my comic shop I just picked a random TPB and just went from there now I'm 400+ issues deep into Spider-Man with zero intention of slowing down
9:59 I just recently picked up a 2nd printing of the Killing joke for a buck in a basement of a thrift store! I'm so glad I had the volition to go check out that non-descript thrift store!
Thank you, yes!. Appreciate this immensely
Can't wait to start my collection
Thank you for this! I’ve been collecting mangas for the longest time that I didn’t know how to start collecting comics. This has been extremely helpful! Love your content!💗
Hi, do you collect art?
i went to a comic book store for the first time in my life having no clue where to start. told the guy at the counter my interest and he said something easy to start with and recommended me The flash Move forward the new 52. excited to start my comic journey!
I'd had a struggle with trying to figure out how to read comics for a while, and I just read the first arc(?) of the young avengers(which i had originally chosen to start with because 1, the characters that seemed interesting, and 2, it was fairly recent, so there's less content to wade through)over the last few days and really loved it,, then came across this video,, and it's so helpful, I used to read a bunch of chapter books and Manga, which have obvious jumping off points, but struggled with comics, not knowing where to start,, so seeing this video and how you don't actually need to find an objectively correct place to start is really helpful,,, I'm gonna keep reading more of the young avengers comics, because I'm really enjoying them, but I'll definitely be jotting down which artists and writers I'm enjoying to look into afterwards, I hadn't even thought of finding comics like that,,, thanks for making this video!
I have problems paying attention , I never finish watching a movie, I've heard that reading comic books and book in general are a good way to mantain my mind focus on those stories, I guess it is going to be difficult but I'll try , good video!
Thank you this video helped me because I read a lot of manga and watch a lot of anime I didn't really understand how to get into comics and as a person that watched all the DC movies and Marvel movies I wanted to understand the source material I think I'm going to start the Batman who laughs first looks Crazy 🔥💕
New to comic book reading but it’s basically branching off of other authors, characters, side characters, art styles, etc… literally exploring the multiverse.
I LOVE Venom and Transformers as characters, I have my dad orignal 2 editions of transformers but im new to comics!
Great video, appreciate you sharing it!
Brilliant video - I've needed a straight forward guide like this for years
Thanks a ton, this was super helpful!
You’e videos are phenomenal. Truly informative.
Good review man
Great video with a lot of great advices. I really like to jump in middle of story and then build up from there it gets so much more interesting. Events are always interesting to follow no matter DC or Marvel. Looking forward to your new video. 🖖🍀👍
Great show guys, thank you
great video! super useful information and resources, thanks man
So what I get from this is that comics shouldn't be read linear, like a book series from start to finish. But kind of like a map you explore in all kinds of directions
I already trust you with that venom shirt
This is a great video, Ryley. This will be my go to video to share when people ask me about getting into comics. Keep it up, sir!
