In 2015, the number plate on the Lotus Esprit that James was driving during the Argentina special was N269 KNG.
That Elise in this video... was N286 KNG.
Bloody hell it was almost identical.

For those of you saying he's not playing, he is playing Gran Turismo 2. The editing and camera work is shoddy though, and in the game you can't do a cinematic camera without watching the replay, so they've filmed him playing the game, and filmed the replay and put it together badly.
    EDIT: It's GT2 not GT1

    • @Jackomac43

You can't use horsepower alone to qualify (or disqualify) a car as a sports car. It's about power to weight, balance, braking, and overall handling. The Mazda may not be excessively fast, but it's very nimble. Also, I think it's very telling that when a majority of the car enthusiast publications rate sports cars, they inevitably bring up the MX5 as a benchmark.

  • @piwright42

As an American teen in the eighties I always drew weird looks when I professed my adoration of the MGB. Someone, an MGB owner in fact, once told me that Mazda bench marked the MGB when they built the Miata. That drew instant appreciation from me for that Japanese sportster. After watching this I think that there was allot of truth to what I was told.

@eszloeszlo The MR2 I've heard is a sweet machine, can't beat mid engine for hard core corner carving but I heard they have cooling issues and something like 20 litres of coolant to move from the front of the car to the back hence the pumps are often flat out. But either way I'd love to have a go at one.

Looks like the Miata's a tried and true simple formula, but I'm a bit surprised Clarkson wasn't asking for more power while driving it. When Jaguar gave him an XKR with "only" 420hp, he said he's wished it had more....I guess faster isn't always better in clarkson's book....

  • @thatmuse76

It does not need an electric roof, it would only add weight. The tops on those are so well designed it takes almost no effort to reach behind you at a stop light and put the top up. Of course unlike the British equivalent, they did not leak, they did not have Lucas electricals, so they did not catch on fire and no British Leyland involvement (or lack there of).

the noble doesnt fit into the description. the engines in the middle. it has a complex sho based motor, cool gadgets, and its a hardtop. oh did i mention its blisteringly fast? it sorta fits in the same definition as a tvr whatever their new one is.

  • @PUREAAMERICAN
    @PUREAAMERICAN 15 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The Miata was actually designed in California at mazda's US design studio. And unlike the british cars that inspired it, it actually runs, does not blow head gaskets, catch on fire due to its electrical system, rust profusely like an MG etc.

@Engage777 The Japanese designers were given the brief to design a version of a British roadster and they took their cue DIRECTLY from the Lotus Elan! If you didn't know that then you shouldn't be commenting on sports cars.Jeremy's point was that the British originated the idea of the small, affordable well designed, fun roadster.WHICH THEY DID!!

It's basically a copy of a british car (the Lotus Elan).
And it fits the definition of a british sports car better than any car build in britain today. (with the possible exception of the Morgan Plus4 - but that isn't affordable like a british sports car should be)

haha, you just don't get it.
The best selling car in the USA for the last 10 years is Japnese, 2nd best? Also Japanese... And as for European cars, America buys more German and Italian cars than Germany or Italy do! However no one in Europe or Japan buys American cars. Figure that one out...
Also don't confuse Jeremy Clarkson with everyone in Britain (a common US mistake), the MX5 is well known as a hairdressers car. And finally some trivia for you, this clip is 10 years old.

    1) American laws are far more strict about importing cars into the US, many things must be changed like additional indicators front and rear etc. It's not the other way round. Almost every US car launched here doesn't sell.
    2) Americans buy European cars because they like them, there is no trickery involved. They test both and choose for themselves.
    3) Taste is subjective of course, but good engineering? not so much...
    4) Don't hate on an entire continent, it'll only make you bitter!

I think britain still has the largest number of independent car manufacturers in the world (even though they only make a few hundred cars a year) and quite a sizable car industry under foreign ownership.
What killed the common mans sports car was the hot hatchback.
Look at the cheapest roadster u can buy today (not in the USA anyway): The Daihatsu Copen.
Nobody buys this.... thing because for the same money u can buy a "warm" hatchback like the Fiat 500 Abarth or a MINI Cooper.

The MG is mid engined wich is - in my opinion anyway - not a trait of a "classic british sports car".
But it's hard to argue against the Caterhams. They are simple, light, relatively cheap, very uncomfortable and have a horrible and leaky hood.
But I think they are too much of a race car. Just too hardcore.
