The thing that really amazes me is how her mother managed to manipulate so many doctors and dentists into doing unnecessary procedures on Gypsy. I’ve been trying to get my ovaries removed for over 10 years because nearly every woman in my mother’s family has gotten ovarian cancer and I don’t want children, so you’d think it would be easy to find a doctor willing to do the procedure, right? Nope. I’ve had _eighteen_ different doctors refuse, on the basis that I “might change my mind [about wanting kids]” and I “should wait longer [until menopause] just in case”. I’m 34, and my husband and I do not want children, period. He didn’t have to go through this when he got a vasectomy-he was in and out in one day at the first doctor he visited. It’s just women who are forced to wait and pray that they don’t die of cancer at 40 years old like my aunt did.
Yet Gypsy’s mother got doctors to perform multiple surgeries on clearly healthy body parts and had her healthy teeth removed just by walking in and being like “I know she looks healthy, but I swear she’s not!”
    Insane.

THANK YOU. I'm still wondering about that part. I'm like WTF. My partner had a hard time getting proper treatment by the doctor who dismissed all his symptoms and just told him to eat oatmeal in the morning...huh...and I'm like wut...while we just wanted to know why he's been sick to the point he couldn't operate a vehicle, and yeah, doctors wouldn't even give a crap but they would operate on Gypsy, put a feeding tube (which had to be changed every six months, and that procedure was painful) and removed all her teeth, her glands, etc...who are these doctors. I'm just wondering right now.

I’ve seen the worst case scenario for child abuse. People who haven’t witnessed or experienced child abuse will never understand how awful it is to feel trapped and threatened as a child by the person meant to protect you. It’ll be a long time before the details start to fade from my recent experience. Awful. I truly believe that if the child I knew had the ability to end his abusers life to save himself like Gypsy rose did, I would have supported him. Instead we all continue to mourn knowing that his life was violently taken away and that he was probably terrified.

"They showed the body (cringes in disgust)" I get it. I'm an assistant editor and I've worked on 6 seasons of Discovery ID shows. I personally received all the photo evidence of crime scenes provided by police and I had to censor ALL of them before giving them to the editors. I have seen hundreds, if not thousands of images I can never unsee. I didn't sign up for that. Half the time the editors wouldn't even use a single image from hundreds I would pre-blur for them. Eventually I revolted and refused to do it, insisting to my post supervisor that the editors have to pick the images they want, and I'll blur them. It was such a waste of countless hours at work and mentally damaging.

The reasons WHY somebody would choose to take a life do actually matter sometimes. Despite how everyone feels about her, she was a victim of mental and physical abuse since she was a child. And that was years and years of dealing with her mother that led up to her decision. Her fight or flight responses makes sense considering her circumstances.

Yeah, but at the same time I do not believe the phenomenon is the same for this. I’ve actually like legitimately studied some of the scholarly literature on mass killings and their social contagion for college and it’s a very specific phenomenon with a lot of specific causal factors. The kind of thing that happened in this story isn’t really what gets “copycatted.” I get what Hasan is saying about people projecting the dynamic that she suffered onto themselves but I do not agree with him that anyone would legitimately try to invent their own G*psy Rose case

I think people always forget to realize that Gypsy is remorseful for killing her mother. However she doesn't regret getting out of the situation she was in. She deserved so much better than what she got. Her whole life was spent in a prison, figuratively and literally. People call her a serial killer and murderer but in all reality she is neither. Shes a victim. Yes she planned to kill her mother but personally i completely understand why. She asked for help, she tried to run away, she was left in the dark her whole life, the doctors failed her. She had very few options to get out of that situation. Either way someone wouldve been murdered. Deedee would've killed gypsy if gypsy hadnt killed her first. On top of this nick fully encouraged the murder of DeeDee. If nick would've encouraged a different way out and found a way to get her out of that situation deedee would still be alive and both gypsy and nick would be free. Im not blaming nick fully but i am saying he does deserve life in prison.
Side note: as a queer person who fully supports gypsy, I can relate to her to a certain extent. I grew up religious and my mom was very homophobic. I felt extremely trapped in my own house. Like I couldnt be myself. It of course wasn't to the extent of gypsys situation but it was hard. I know what it feels like to be trapped and seeing someone I can relate to in some way be free is so amazing to see. That's my personal take of why queers like gypsy so much.

Gypsy Rose can say that the way she did things was wrong, but the reality is that if she hadn't, she'd probably still be her mother's slave. Because there's no help available for kids in her situation. In some states, the state would prefer her mother kill her than have to provide her with the financial assistance she would need if she ever escaped. @@NabiHamada TL;DR: Yes and no, but mostly no. There were a few cases of teens doing some of the 'challenges' but pretty much all cases of suicide supposedly caused by the BWC were just teen suicides that the media was trying their hardest to associate with it. Other cases only appear in one source with no names and can't be confirmed.
One of the first articles to promote this BWC idea (from Novaya Gazeta) claimed that 130 children had died in connection to the challenge in the span of a few months, and they were basing themselves on the fact that some of the children/teens frequented the same "death groups" (which is bound to happen with suicidal teens and definitely doesn't mean the "death groups" themselves made them suddenly suicidal). The editor Sergey Sokolov was later found out to have instructed his team to blackmail the 'suspects' (members of the groups) and staged an arrest to threaten them into a 'confession'.
Even assuming a few of these supposed cases were absolutely true, it was certainly not the phenomenon it was made out to be. Anyways, my point is that Hasan was trying to use it as an example of teens doing dangerous/bad things as part of a trend, but that's simply not what the BWC was. I guess the silver lining was that some parents did get motivated to talk to their kids about suicide.

His development stunted around age 12, and he has some weird sexual hangups, but the worst thing is that he will do anything anybody asks or tells him to do because all he wants is for people to like him. I see that in Nicholas. Of course he knew right from wrong and I’m not saying autism exonerates him of his guilt, but when I hear him speak all I can think of is my cousin.

The blue whale and tide pod challenges happened. They were blown out of proportion though. Only 34 kids actually attempted the tide pod from what I remember reading.

Ok but he has no place to speak on why the lgbt community likes her. There's a lot to relate with having to repress yourself and feeling trapped. It's clearly very different because we in the lgbt can leave more freely but it's not just that she's got some messy hostory and questionable posts.

I would believe that random visioncon guy could have had good intentions. I know from experience that people in similar situations to the one she's in may actively discourage calling the police, and I can understand if someone said they had to get out, but don't call the cops, that someone might choose to offer them a place to stay instead.

"why did the lgbt community adopt her so hard" i think a lot of us can relate to being estranged from our biological families who may also be abusive toward us and needing a new family to accept us.

Im only 9 minutes in and i simply can not compute why people are trying to argue about your very correct opinion about copy cat murders! There are so many cases of people idolizing serial killers or bombers. Teens that get fixated on the "fame" that they think killing people gets you. Its a very real very scary reality. I am absolutely floord.

the ACTUAL reason the LGBTQ+ community is embracing Gypsy with open arms is because when it comes to being abused mentally, physically, and emotionally, we have purple hearts. many people can sympathize with her.

She needs to be out of the spotlight. It'll keep her from healing because part of her brokenness is around a profound need for attention. This was created by the trauma her mom inflicted. This is another disaster waiting to happen. BTW the name Gypsy Rose comes from a burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee whose own mom was the ultimate "stage mother". Another severely controlling unhealthy relationship. The message is "you will perform for me in the way I want or you don't get my love".

A better example of the potential influence social media can have would’ve been any of the challenges flooding social media apps between 2010 and 2020. Hasan should’ve remembered these. My first day of high school started with us being warned about the choking game trend after one of our classmates died attempting it the night before.
