I think this was the best way to introduce Veruca's character. The very first shot we see of Veruca is her sitting in her father's chair and bossing him around. This is a great visual cue that symbolizes how Veruca is very much the boss of her father despite the fact he is a successful business owner because he constantly gives in to his daughter's selfish desires.

When he was asked what it was like to work with the kids (I don't remember his exact words) he said four of them were great to work with but one of them drove him crazy. He didn't say which one, but I'm certain it was Mike Teevee's actor. I saw an interview with the him as an adult and he said he was a trouble maker on set and it annoyed Gene Wilder.

You know, I've often thought that if Violet hadn't turned into a blueberry and made it to the goose room, Veruca probably wouldn't have gone down the garbage chute. It's interesting how this movie managed to make Veruca Salt the most despicable and memorable of the kids who tour the factory, while the 2005 movie somehow made Violet Beauregarde the most hateful one.
I kind of like the 1971 Violet Beauregarde. She's loud and rude, and her gum habit is unhygienic (behind her ear - ugh!), but she is funny, has character, and I just love her "Can it, you nit!" to Veruca's whining, which really does shut her up.
Well all the children (except for Charlie) are detestable in the 2005 adaption. Augustus is disgusting, animalistic and greedy. Veruca is arrogant, big headed and over-competitive. Veruca is spoiled, over indulged and childish and Mike is garish, confrontational and aggressive, like in the book. Only Charlie is the nice child BUT he's too nice, he's like an angel sent down from the heavens, which makes him the most boring of the children. In the 1971 film he does throw tantrums sometimes, like a normal kid but the other kids are too nice too. It's only Veruca that's unlikable, the other three are just normal kids that don't really deserve their fates.
Assuming if the women worked from ages 20-65 (45 consecutive years) on that 8 hours 5 days a week schedule, that would mean they’d work 11,700 days. 760,000 (the number of bars that would be opened on a 5 day schedule) x 11,700 = 8,892,000,000. Almost 9 billion bars. To put into perspective into how much that is, the world population as of July 2022 is currently sitting at 8 billion. There would be more opened and wasted Wonka bars than there are people on Earth.

Funny thing is - this film was released in 1971, when British currency got decimalised (100 pence to the pound instead of 240). Okay, how does Mr. Wilkinson/Slugworth just happen to know _exactly_ where each one of the five Golden Tickets is going to pop up? And on top of that, he makes it around _the entire planet_ in time to greet each winner.... ...it's something to do with Oompa Loompa magic, isn't it?
As a child: who's that weird guy? He seems to be there a lot. As a teenager: Ok, now this is a little weird. How IS he RIGHT there when each winner is announced. As an adult: ONLY logical theory that works is that Willy Wonka already knew where in the world each ticket was going, and I'm wiling to bet none of these TV announcements were broadcast live so this assistant had enough time to show up, say he works for Wonka, and tell the winners this false promise. I would guess the tickets were only released one at a time, and Wonka knew exactly which case, and even which bar, had the ticket. Once a golden ticket case went out, he sent Wilkerson out to follow that case, and wait for someone to buy the bar. Really though, Wilkerson was only present for the discovery of Veruca's ticket - and nearby for Charlie's. He spoke with Violet, Augustus and Mike during their press conferences.
Maybe Wonka used an algorithm (like the one Mike Teavee used find his ticket in the remake) to keep track of the tickets and enable his aide to reach the finders ASAP.

I feel like both characters are handled very differently. The Veruca in this film is extremely rude, and we don’t really get a good reason as to why. In the 2005 version, it’s made very clear that Veruca is only spoiled because of her parents being rich. But in THIS film we never get any indication that they’re rich, (I get the Henry has money, but there’s a difference between having money and being rich). The father in this film is way nicer than the father in the second film. This makes the Veruca in the second film make WAY more sense than this films Veruca. Plus in the sequal, we really get a glimpse at how spoiled Veruca is when she starts naming all of her pets but still insists of getting a squirrel. That’s way more precise than a golden egg. There’s something about the Veruca in the sequel that makes me feel bad for her, because no. She isn’t as mean as this one. The sequels Veruca is only spoiled because of the way her parents raised her. They never set her rules and never made her earn anything. Again, we NEVER see those very important details in this film, and it just makes Veruca look like an unstable girl. I get that’s probably what they were going for but I think the sequels Veruca was handled better. She was nice to Mr. Wonka at the start, and was relatively nice to everyone until either: 1. Wonka started being ‘weird’ 2. She didn’t get what she wanted from her father, because she’s always been raised to get everything she wanted. Idk maybe it’s just because I haven’t seen this older version in a while but Veruca has no origins in this movie. There’s no explaining why she acts this way unlike the sequel. And it’s for that reason I think the sequels Veruca is better. Now of course as actresses, both are amazing, I don’t want to praise one over the other. They both nailed their roles!

Am I the only one who notices that Veruca sitting on the revolving chair (like a unreasonable boss) establishes her as a domineering influence over her father (who in this scene looks like one of the supervisors (the second highest rank (factory girls are lower, obviously) but lower compared to the above influences)? This subtly cinematographic form of hierarchy is very clever in establishing her character! Nice work!
Anyone notice how in Charlie and the Chocolate factor, Veruca's dad seems uptight and posh like her, probably coming from a long line of wealth in their family, but in this film her mum and dad seem like they come from a small estate in Manchester or Newcastle and her father made it big at some point?
Yes, it does look like the 1971 Mr Salt made it big from a smaller beginning. After the Golden Ticket affair, it probably went back the other way for him. His business must have suffered from all the expense and lost revenue in finding a Golden Ticket for Veruca, after all.

Funny thing is - this film was released in 1971, when British currency got decimalised (100 pence to the pound instead of 240).
So - a pound was a big deal in those days, unless it just got devalued by decimalisation! - lol

I would guess the tickets were only released one at a time, and Wonka knew exactly which case, and even which bar, had the ticket. Once a golden ticket case went out, he sent Wilkerson out to follow that case, and wait for someone to buy the bar.
Really though, Wilkerson was only present for the discovery of Veruca's ticket - and nearby for Charlie's. He spoke with Violet, Augustus and Mike during their press conferences.
Slugworth probably can teleport to anywhere in the world.
Maybe Wonka used an algorithm (like the one Mike Teavee used find his ticket in the remake) to keep track of the tickets and enable his aide to reach the finders ASAP.

I feel like both characters are handled very differently.
The Veruca in this film is extremely rude, and we don’t really get a good reason as to why. In the 2005 version, it’s made very clear that Veruca is only spoiled because of her parents being rich. But in THIS film we never get any indication that they’re rich, (I get the Henry has money, but there’s a difference between having money and being rich). The father in this film is way nicer than the father in the second film. This makes the Veruca in the second film make WAY more sense than this films Veruca.
Plus in the sequal, we really get a glimpse at how spoiled Veruca is when she starts naming all of her pets but still insists of getting a squirrel. That’s way more precise than a golden egg.
There’s something about the Veruca in the sequel that makes me feel bad for her, because no. She isn’t as mean as this one. The sequels Veruca is only spoiled because of the way her parents raised her. They never set her rules and never made her earn anything. Again, we NEVER see those very important details in this film, and it just makes Veruca look like an unstable girl. I get that’s probably what they were going for but I think the sequels Veruca was handled better. She was nice to Mr. Wonka at the start, and was relatively nice to everyone until either:
1. Wonka started being ‘weird’
2. She didn’t get what she wanted from her father, because she’s always been raised to get everything she wanted.
Idk maybe it’s just because I haven’t seen this older version in a while but Veruca has no origins in this movie. There’s no explaining why she acts this way unlike the sequel. And it’s for that reason I think the sequels Veruca is better.
Now of course as actresses, both are amazing, I don’t want to praise one over the other. They both nailed their roles!

Am I the only one who notices that Veruca sitting on the revolving chair (like a unreasonable boss) establishes her as a domineering influence over her father (who in this scene looks like one of the supervisors (the second highest rank (factory girls are lower, obviously) but lower compared to the above influences)? This subtly cinematographic form of hierarchy is very clever in establishing her character! Nice work!

Anyone notice how in Charlie and the Chocolate factor, Veruca's dad seems uptight and posh like her, probably coming from a long line of wealth in their family, but in this film her mum and dad seem like they come from a small estate in Manchester or Newcastle and her father made it big at some point?
Yes, it does look like the 1971 Mr Salt made it big from a smaller beginning. After the Golden Ticket affair, it probably went back the other way for him. His business must have suffered from all the expense and lost revenue in finding a Golden Ticket for Veruca, after all.
I can't help but laugh at how the other bad kids got interviews on TV, and we just get Veruca yelling at her Dad for a golden ticket. 🤣

Either because he found the last one the day before when Mr. Wonka was inviting people in or because he would have been interviewed when he got crowded around by others but, he ran away from the crowd.
