Jamie, I was wondering if you could do something about the rules on nipples and breasts in social media. For example, a TH-camr Alex from Pretty Pastel Please got in trouble with the TH-cam gods for an apparently unacceptable cardigan a while back, but when she got her male friend Sam to model it, and various bikinis etc in subsequent episodes that is apparently fine. I’d also like to know how it works/doesn’t work for someone non binary, irrespective of any gender confirmation surgery they might have undertaken. Thank you for the videos, very helpful.
The worst thing about russian ad is that these amendments were accepted (over a year ago already (maybe even two??)) and I live in this country and it is pain...
Yeah, as someone who is asexual, I find it extremely dumb that people are telling others not to get married, just because they are not strictly male and female
They cry because they think they're losing their freedom of speech. No, they're not, but they fail to realize that it doesn't mean freedom from consequences.
It's not even for any trauma reason (I have a close relative whom I accepted will never fully accept sexual minorities, gay men in particular, because he was molested by one). It's just '... I kinda have a vision of what marriage is like can you stop oppressing me plx'?
@@kazikek2674 Well, if a woman is assaulted by a straight man and ends up saying that she will never "accept" straight men anymore, some people will just say stop being dramatic. Empathetic people may suggest her to seek professional help. No one will say she is justified to hate and discriminate against all straight men because of her experience. But it is suddenly acceptable when the person in question becomes a gay man.
@@shawqin992 I agree with you in principle, but in practice, I experienced the reverse as well ('Women who were so assaulted shouldn't hate men but we can't truly blame them if they do' was a viewpoint I saw a lot of). So I can't blame one more than the other. Also, talking with that person that I mentioned over repeatedly helped *really* improve their attitude, especially to transpeople, but to gay people as well. I just know they'll never achieve full-blown acceptance.
How can someone say "Let's stop living in a world of hate" with their whole chest, then in the same breath say "I'm against gay marriage"? The cognitive dissonance is beyond baffling! How?!
lmao I bet when they say hate they mean “stop being mean to me because i don’t support lgbtq” or “stop being mean to me because I support a hateful president”
"I know a lot of people who are gay. I have friends who are gay. I don't fear them. I just don't want them to have the same rights I do. I want them to be miserable and in constant fear of having the love of their life torn away from them. Not being able to openly tell them that without backlash is so oppressive!"
"I have gay friends, therefore I am incapable of honophobia." Wait.... If you want them to have the same rights as you do but you dont want them to be able to get married, do you want to get rid of your rights to get married? Is this actually an anti-marriage ad disguised as a homophobic ad disguised as an anti-hate ad?
Seriously...if I'd been told in my sex-ed in school that asexuality is a thing that exists, I wouldn't have had to struggle through my childhood and most of my adulthood until the past couple of years thinking there was something wrong with me. I'd been told that EVERYONE experiences attraction and it's normal and healthy. I was not informed that it's ALSO normal and healthy to not have those feelings at all. I would love to see sex-ed change and expand!
Yeah if I'd known about it sooner it would have saved me several years of worrying if there was just something wrong with me and hating myself even more for it. Finding out about asexuality from a meme of all things was genuinely one of the biggest moments of relief in my entire life. Like knowing that I wasn't the only one, that there actually wasn't something wrong with me (in that specific area, anyway) and finally having a word for it was just a great feeling. I wish it was taught more, I'm sure plenty of other aces have the same struggle so being taught that "hey actually you're all good you're not the only one" would do a lot of good.
As a mama who didn't used to understand asexuality, I apologize for us dumb grownups. One of my adult kids is confirmed ace spectrum, and I wouldn't be surprised if my other kids turned out to be as well. Y'all are totally valid! (Ace flag emoji.)
My sex-ed only taught about the physical acts and didn't teach us about attraction at all. So me being an aroace, I thought everyone was just pretending to be interested in dating and sex and I was terrified there was something wrong with me for being uncomfortable at the idea of even pretending. I'm really lucky I stumbled upon a random TH-cam video one time that was able to tell me that for an aroace, I'm completely normal. But it would have saved me so many mental health issues if I'd known not experiencing attraction was an option
Also to talk about what asexuality is and isn't! What is sexual attraction, romantic attraction, easthetical attraction etc? I was 27 when I realised I was ace, and I had known about asexuality for years before I realised my experience actually matched fully, just because of stupid myths like asexuals not having a libido etc. So not just mentioned in one sentence, but sex-ed talking about different kinds of attraction. It also helps bi/pan people a lot, since some are for example homoromantic and bisexual. I really think everyone benefits from knowing the basics of attractions, no matter your sexuality.
"i'm oppressed for being homophobic" is honestly the funniest shit like wow it must be hard when no one wants to be your friend when they find out you think certain people don't deserve rights or basic human decency
Do they really think they're victims because they want gays and lesbians to settle for mixed-orientation marriages? Or is it some grift by the ministry or sect just for the money?
"I'm oppressed for being a shitty person - I don't understand why no one wants to be friends with a shitty person, people should be free to be shitty without consequences"
That’s the scary thing, it has all the right aspects to be a parody. The vagueness of what their supposed “differences” are at the beginning, the black and white filming, the music, the initial feelings of shame slowly turning to self acceptance, are all reminiscent of old coming out videos that it feels so deliberate. It feels like the punchline should be that they are not in fact coming out as LGBT+ but are actually just a group who don’t support gay marriage (you know like the ones that have been around for the past century) and are satirizing how there are people who want to believe they are part of a minority group so they can feel like the victims when they’re really not. But the fact that it’s supposed to be taken seriously implies that whoever made the commercial has researched a lot of coming out videos and decided to make this out of sheer spite.
I'm from Russia and that advert is not only homophobic, but is also promoting that those constituon changes will prevent homosexual marriage. But like???? We don't have it anyways?? And you may ask, why are they using that theme then? Because they tried to encourage traditionalist and elderly people to vote for those changes, which actually just make censure even worse and give the president another chance to be a president And he is ruling our country for 20 years, which are my whole fricking life :)
I mean Putin wasn't a president for 6 years in my life, but he was a prime minister and Medvedev, who was the president is from the same party and has the same views (might also be just a puppet in his hands, who knows)
Oh and another "fun" fact: Another advert for constitution changes used religion too :)) They promoted, that God will have a place in constitution Uhm, first of all, what about being a non-religious state with lots of different religions??? Second of all, why the heck is that necessary?? Are we burning churches or what? Idk this just makes me extremely mad
@@shmelvampire That last one is probably because Russia is strongly promoting a level of anti-muslim attitude as well right now. To me, Islam is a complex set of beliefs and sub-types of it exist that I genuinely can't accept but in many places a blank 'islam is bad' is promoted.
@@kazikek2674 I don't really know about state propahanda, but Muslim people face discrimination because of mostly being certain nations, which is disgusting and nationalist
Alternately, wouldn't that also mean that no one is born with any sexuality, and people shouldn't assume anyone's sexuality before they have been informed about it? Well of course not, *obviously* everyone is born cishet and it's just children being *influenced* by the *gay agenda* 🙄🙄🙄
that Russian ad also felt mad transphobic. like obviously cis gay men can present as fem as they want, but the fact that they referred to that person as the kid's "new mom" and then played into the transphobic idea that trans parents will force (presumably) cis kids to be trans makes me think that they wanted to villainize trans ppl too. like just one ad, demonize the entire lgbt community, basically admit you'd rather kids spend their entire childhoods in overcrowded, underfunded orphanages than be adopted by loving parents. also i loved the orphanage workers' faces at the end. granted i'm not Russian so maybe the adoption process is different, but did they really not interview both parents? did the dad just walk in and say "i'll take this one" and they said "oh thank god take him" without knowing who the other parent would be or even if there _was_ another parent???
That was basically what I thought after I saw the kids expression upon seeing his new "mum". Like, did the parents not MEET the child before adopting them!
YOU SAID EVERYTHING I WANTED TO SAY! The way the guy standing outside was portrayed felt very...off, extremely similar to the "stereotypical gay" people that are portrayed in homophobic media There's nothing wrong with feminine-presenting men (which includes gay men), but his whole character seemed to be made with the purpose of villainizing gay people and invalidating feminine-presenting men regardless of their sex orientation. And a lot more things that are from the same can of worms. (I really hope I didn't word it badly English isn't my first language I'm sorry if I implied something I didn't mean to)
Yes, I also felt like the ad was more transphobic than homophobic. Since the mom is introduced as mom, and the mom shown is played by a feminine-looking man, it could be considered more as mocking transwoman than gay people. Especially since the mom wants to put the boy in a dress too, representing trans people supposedly forcing children to be trans
You see the thing is, in Russia (I mean by that older people, at least for me and my friends that is) trans people come up in the conversation only to mock someone for looking outside of whays stereotypical for their gender, like "whAt arE yOu, a trAnsExUaL??" To a dude who wears make up or "female" clothing It is also so normal to misgender a trans person like the moment you learn their past, it is alsmost not normal to not misgender them (Fun fact, they/them pronounce doesn't exist in Russian language, if in english singular they is found as early as 1600, in Russia we default to "he" when we don't know persons gender, which certainly doesn't help) Gay people are also depicted as feminine like 99% of the time, (it is illegal to show gay people without mocking them by the way ;>) so ad likely was targeted at them (my friend was called russian analog of the f word for wearing a choker, and he is so straight it's just fucking hilariously sad) Sorry for venting, again, I'm speaking of personal experience, aside from law it may differ for other people
I love how Jamie is like "oh these are queer people coming out" and then it cuts to them 14-wordsing homophobia and he looked so shocked and I about lost it
Daily reminder: a gay couple doesn’t have to have a top and a bottom. The couple could switch, or they could just be asexual.(and other options ofc ty for people in replies)
Or they could be vanilla. The options are not "fetish or asexual", the options are not a thing. It's just "you do whatever works and feels good for you"
The idea that there must be tops and bottoms comes from the straight cultural belief that love should be about dominance and submission. Religion has tainted so much
I don't understand why people are so investigate into how gay couples (especially gay men) do sex. Like you probably don't want to talk about your sex life with strangers? And what are you do while it? Nobodys business.
"I've tried to change this, but hating against people who are literally just minding their business and not doing anything is just too important to me" fixed her sentence
If they want to talk about marriage, why don't they mention that disabled folks that get married can lose their benefits based on how much their partner makes in many countries regardless of orientation
This! Or also about how marital rape is legal in several countries! (I'm from one of them, and that country doesn't allow same sex marriage too) I see no benefit to keeping a straight-only marriage, tf was that first one
The only thing I can think of when people say gay couples getting married takes things away from straight couples getting married is...they're worried about increased competition in terms of booking slots for ceremonies and availability of honeymoon suites?
I got really sad at the Russian advert. I was adopted by gay men. They were the first men in our area to adopt. When me and my little brother were asked about how we would feel if we had a Dad and a Pop instead of a dad and mum we didn't care ! We were so excited to have a family. They made the day we went home the day before our brothers birthday because all he wanted for his 3rd birthday was a family 😭😭😭 Children are not born with hate in their hearts. It is taught. 💕💕💕
This is so sweet. There's a cute ad here in Sweden for a train, I think it is. This little girl is riding the train and talking to everyone around her about her papa. But she keeps saying contradictory things. "My papa is tall! My papa is short!" Etc. When she finally gets off the station with her chaperone, she runs up to this pair of men who look very different from each other and gives them a hug. You and your two papas reminded me of her and her two papas 😊
The only argument for straight over gay families I sort of can get behind is the 'Need role models for diifferent behaviors, views and situations', including 'need a good female and male role model', but honestly, being in a family with two same-sexed parents doesn't mean you'll be *deprived* of such models nor does having two straight parents mean you're automatically getting them. So even that is kind of weak, and people in orphanages having more people that can offer them a supportive, loving home trumps that potential 'doubt' in my head every time. Glad you had a good home. Good luck in the future.
@@sarahstardust Do you know if that ad is on youtube? (Or somewhere else) I'd like to watch it cause that sounds really cute. Even if it's in swedish or smth.
it cute how they say our intolerance of THEIR intolerance is wrong. just because you "love me" doesnt mean i can overlook the fact that queer people are often abused out of "love"
Plus, some of these straight supremacists have been manipulated into thinking straight supremacist abuses come from love because it's more lucrative for a given pastor, ministry, or extreme sect. Bigotry becomes the sermon when megachurches are run like corporations and profit margins become the top priority.
Also when the guy said "Be you", what was left unsaid was "Be you. Wait no, not like that. Be you in a way that I like and fits my homophobic beliefs."
Just FYI: when the “is that the russia you choose” ad aired, it caused a giant uproar in Russia, and several flash mobs, that basically said “yes! yes we do!”. Even the popular people who have previously stated to have no particular stance on the LGBTQ+ issues, have said that “the russia where kids get adopted from orphanages into loving families? yes, we do choose that”. Even the ones that “don’t like gay people”. The amendments were still passed in, and now the Russian constitution defines a family as “a union between a man and a woman” but that’s a whole other discourse.
What really just annoys me is how They’re saying they’re gonna get judged and that they’re “OppResSes!!” Like if they feel oppressed why don’t they move to one of the 72 countries where being LGBTQA+ is still illegal.
Sadly, no. There are indeed homophobic PoS that don't comprehend the irony or hypocrisy. Usually of the variety of people that are in fact hyper-conservatives that are bigots across all spectrums.
I remember reading a leaflet against same sex marriage. It argued that it increased abortions. I was so confused. How are gay people causes unwanted pregnancies.
Obviously, it doesn't, and no reasonable person would buy that. But if homophobes and pro-lifers were reasonable people, then homophobes and pro-lifers wouldn't exist.
on the contrary, wouldnt gay people be slightly less likely to cause a pregnancy? and less pregnancies would mean less potential abortions, so gay ppl would decrease abortion. not to mention the fact that gay couples would probably be more likely to adopt. which would mean that more people would be likely to put their children up for adoption instead of aborting them. bc the kid would be more likely to be adopted? idk what
I'm always appalled that the homophobic propaganda Jamie takes his time (& anguish) to turn into consumable conter for our laugther even exists in the first place and that I've never encountered it as a straight cis Black man
As one of 2 fathers to 2 kids, I can say with confidence that my kids are fine. Pouty faces are mostly reserved for when I tell them that they need to turn their tablets off and get ready for bed.
That Russian advert actually made me feel a bit sick. The sort of insidious hatred dressed up as caring from the other ads is bad too, but that was so openly hateful that it really shocked me.
8:15 "Same sex marriage is not as simple as you think" well as one wise Sam Collins once said : " It doesn't take rocket science to just let people be gay " 🏳🌈
As for that russian add, yeah, the outrage was big when it came out (last year, iirc), and a lot of people made a lot of beautiful wholesome art with this gay couple and their new son, where they all where happy. Cuz love wins.
I'm from Russia and know about that ad. The first thing is that the ammount of children brought up by just their mother and grandmother is enormous (and in this ad he was brought up by two women too, surprise!), the second thing is that it's impossible for a child to not even see their new parents during adoption and the third thing is that there is a line in the constitution that a marriage is a unity between a man and a woman (not married people can't adopt children) so this whole thing is useless. But the good part is that dozens of artists drew characters of the add as a happy family and many not homophobic people spoke about it
I was a foster child. What I needed was love, patience, understanding (I am trans and suspect that I might also be neurodivergent, looking at the research as well as the experiences of autistic people is resonating very strongly with me, and I was suspected to be autistic in my childhood too, but back then they weren't sure which behaviour was caused by trauma and what wasn't and autism in people assigned female at birth wasn't well researched in the 90s) and very basic things such as food, proper, safe sleep and education. None of these things can only be provided by a cis woman in a relationship with a cis man. In fact, I would argue that LGBTQ+ foster parents, provided they weren't trans-exlusionary, would have had an especially good understanding of what I was going through. I came out last year, at 30, and have been piecing together what makes me me ever since, since I finally have the language I need to describe my experience and understand those of others. I don't want any child to have to wait until they are 30+ until they have a chance to be themselves.
I'm in a discord server for folks who are autistic, and people who are questioning are welcome to join. If you think it would be helpful then I could send a link to it. I wish you luck on your journey of discovery and I hope you're able to feel comfortable and happy within yourself.
Speaking as someone with autism, if you suspect you may be neurodivergent you should look into getting diagnosed by a professional. People trying to diagnose themselves has proven harmful to neurodivergent people in general, especially given that one of the main things bigots say when it comes to neurodivergence is claiming that all or most neurodivergent people are faking it in the hopes of being given an advantage(especially in education) over others.
I feel you! I wasn't adopted but I was raised to be a girl, forced to wear pretty dresses, and labeled as a tomboy all my life. I'm 38 turning 39 this summer .... and I only just discovered I'm not even cis. I'm Libramasc... a non-binary gender where the person is mostly Agender with a 1-49% connection to being masculine/boy/male Edit: I also think I might be on the autism spectrum... or have ADHD ... or both
@@Missingno_Miner Yeah, I plan on getting checked out by a professional as soon as I'm able to. I just don't know how to go about finding one and my doctor won't help. Instead, he asked "Why?" and then brushed me off
It's weird coming from a country that was fairly early with legalizing gay marriage and seeing people like "WHAT WILL HAPPEN?" being screamed in other countries. In my head, it's been seventeen years. What happened is, a few people get more tax benefits, medical emergencies and wills concerning gay couples got slightly less messy to deal with, and the waiting lists to adopt a child got longer because there's less children to adopt. Yes, teachers have to explain why Timmy has two mothers, but they generally do so in kindergarten, when most kids (rightfully so) judge parental capability by what snacks are in your house, when you go to bed, and how many toy dinosaurs you own.
Just yesterday I had someone say “we’re not scared of trans people/gay people”. That’s not what transphobia or homophobia means, it takes a 2 second google search to realise that and it’s frustrating. That was funny back when I knew nothing about it, I’ll admit that I used to be that way just because I grew up in that environment, but it’s now just being ignorant
They're also lying, because hatred is repackaged fear. Deep inside every homophobe or transphobe is a scared little child, who is terrified they might be what they fear most. When they panic over gayness or transness spreading like it's contagious, or when they scream, "Think of the children!" they're actually talking about themselves.
I always remind people that even in terms of various other phobias that they insist on falling back on to support the 'I don't fear them' thing, they specify 'Fear or aversion' in the full definition more often than not. So, yeah, if you hold neither fear nor aversion for gay/trans people and don't express views that full-blown directly oppress them you're not homo/transphobic, but you can 'not fear gay people' and still fall under the very definition your brain is coming up with pointless ways of trying to reject.
What I expected from watching this video: "haha, homophobes are funny!" What I actually got from watching this video: homophobes believe they're victims of discrimination, I may be turned down when trying to adopt because I'm trans, people seek out and support conversion therapy because of internal homophobia. btw It's morning for me
Seriously I can't stand people acting like they're oppressed when they aren't and the only ones who aren't oppressed is no one because everyone is oppressed have you ever noticed how police react during protests as soon as they're given a reason they shut it down that's because the government doesn't like the people being visibly unhappy with their government because that makes that government look bad and the only way to stop all, of this oppression is to boogaloo
@@shmelvampire I don't think adoption is possible, but trans people can marry if it's between people whose legal gender markers are different. They talked about banning any marriage for trans people, but they haven't at the moment as far as I know
@@wghmnb9136 I'm not Russian, but from next door. I'm by no means an expert, but for what I've read on the news in my country, I'd say a big part of why the public opinion on lgbtq+ folks is unaccepting is that there simply isn't enough unbiased information available. Cencorship and ads like the one in this video maintain the image of homosexuality as something unwanted and bad. Changing views on things is not easy even in a society with freedom of speech and free press, but when those in charge do their best to restrict pro-lgbtq propaganda, I can't see things improving any time soon.
@@wghmnb9136 I looked up what was said about this ad elsewhere online, and it's an ad put out by a patriotic media agency to promote for a law prohibiting same-sex couple adoptions at an election which also was about changing the law so that the current president can stay in power for many more years. The point of the ad was that the kid was at first happy to finally get adopted, but when he saw that he was adopted to two men rather than "a real heterosexual family" he got sad. Because even kids know what a "real family" should be. It's true that information tends to be biased, but with free press and freedom of speech there at least is the chance to hear both sides of a thing, and then make your own decicions. There also are scientific organisations with some actual credibility, and I tend to trust a well-constructed scientific study over many other things. There have actually been studies made about the wellbeing of children whose parents are same-sex, and the results have shown that these children are happier than those raised by a heterosexual couple. Usually, same-sex couples truly want the child, and go through a lot to get one, so maybe they value their more than heterosexual parents. But of course, we're all entitled to our opinions.
@@wghmnb9136 As others have pointed out, you're wrong -- the ad was explicitly designed to target gay couples. Though by choosing a particularly effeminate/gender-ambiguous look for the second parent, they probably were hoping more people would find that distasteful. However, nice way for you to try to suggest that taking the side of raving transphobes might somehow be more acceptable than supporting blatant homophobia. Of course on that front -- you're also very wrong. Gay or straight, cisgender or transgender, EVERY parent knows that it's far more LIKELY that a young child will turn out to be both cisgender and straight, because that's how the percentages work out. (Current estimates are that in terms of sexuality, perhaps 5% of the population are some form of LGBTQIA+ -- and only around 1 in 150 people are transgender.) The thing is, it's overwhelmingly straight, cisgender parents who time and again show that they wish to FORCE a particular sexuality and gender identity on their children. (Not all such parents, obviously, but when that kind of attempt to indoctrinate the child against his or her nature does happen, it's invariably cis/het folks who are responsible.) Whereas gay and trans parents know better, because we've suffered first-hand the pain of others trying to force their ideas of who we are "supposed to be" upon us to our detriment. Thus gay and trans parents are NOT going to take a child like the one in the video, who has shown no indication of expressing his gender identity as anything but male, and try to make him dress or behave in an effeminate manner, or to try to "groom" him to be anything other than who he is. What that ad therefore tries to suggest is despicable, and is meant to do exactly one thing -- to scare gullible people into thinking the homophobes and transphobes might have some kind of a point. They don't. And by the way, there is no such thing as "trans ideology", either. Trans people simply exist. People who try to couch their distaste for trans folks in terms of simply being opposed to some sort of "ideology" are doing the exact same thing that the folks in that first clip are doing -- trying to garner some measure of acceptability for their distaste for a whole class of their fellow human beings by masking their words, and trying to make their position sound more palatable to the unwary. In any case, if you thought by trying to keep your your homophobia (and transphobia) "low-key", it wouldn't be obvious to everyone else here, I have to tell you, it isn't working. You can't say (for example, because I don't think I've seen you actually say this anywhere), "I believe gay couples can make fine adoptive parents," (as many gay couples do), but then add, "I still believe it would be preferable ..." for those children to have other parents (as you have said, just above), without a measure of homophobia showing. Good parents make for a good childhood experience, period. And when a child has good parents (straight or gay, cisgender or transgender), you just CANNOT say, "but swapping in a parent of a different gender and/or sexuality would clearly have made the experience better."
That iceberg ad was run in Australia in the lead up to our gay marriage vote. It was not the only one. The "nay" votes were so loud here. We won out in the end but it was a horrible time to live through. Every man and his dog having an opinion on your love life. The news. Advertising. Social media. Every where I went my love was being analysed and scrutinized and used for political gain. I'm glad we won the vote but it should have been much easier.
We shouldn't have had to vote on it at all. The government should have done the right thing and just brought it in. I'm glad we won, but the process certainly traumatised a lot of people.

It is a poor way of doing so, given that having friends(using the term friends as loosely as people who make this claim tend to, so including any and all acquaintances) who are part of one or more minority groups does not mean that you can't be bigoted against or discriminate against those minorities.
I was laughing so much at the first video. It came across as parody. These people super seriously "coming out" as being homophobic, set to the emotional music. It's wild to see all these people who genuinely believe that *they* are the ones who are being discriminated against for their views... It would be a perfect comedy sketch. The one person even saying they don't like being called a bigot. I found it really funny. But then the Russian video was like a punch in the gut. The levels of undisguised hatred were so intense it nearly brought me to tears and retroactively made me feel bad for finding the first advert funny and feeling so light-hearted over it because it brought me back to reality about how serious this is. Especially to think about LGBTQ+ people in places like Russia. I was so stunned I'm going to have to rewatch the rest of the video from that point because I didn't take any of it in. This is such a great video. Being able to have a laugh and also deal with things seriously, all handled really well and in a short space of time is quite something.

The first ad just feels like the oppressors are trying to become the oppressed. They're trying so hard to victimize themselves it's actually funny now 😭
Everything about that first ad just angers me so much "I have friends who are gay, they're wonderful people, I love them...", but you literally don't respect them enough to think they should be allowed to get married?? "You cannot have a society of hatred", yes! Exactly! Its called "Popper's Paradox", a tolerant society cannot tolerate intolerance. That's why homophobes are looked down on, its not oppression when we're the ones fighting for people do be allowed to do things!
as hysterically angry as the first commercial made me, the russian one silenced me into a dark bitter depression... how could they portray a child being adopted by an apparently in love and healthy couple eager to care for them as anything but good. they had to force the dress bit (like any person would ACTUALLY do this) to sour them to the audience cause they must have realized it was too transparently hateful. any persons feeling any hesitation towards adopting a child due to the possibility of them being "dissapointed" please don't let that thought dissuade or harm you... They're there waiting desperately for your love... And to give you theirs' in return!
As a Russian American who is Bi, it makes me really sad to see how my culture interprets and views the LGBT+ community. No child will be hateful unless they are taught to do so, and no good person will ever force a child to wear something they dont like. Idk I just hope that one day they will accept us all.
The first one gave me, like, a triple bingo. I laughed at the guy that literally went "I have gay friends so I can't be homophobic. I'm also not scared, so double not homophobic!!!" But real talk: They can believe whatever they want. The problem comes in when they *force* their beliefs on others (by, for example, voting against legalizing same-sex/gender marriage). Don't like gay marriage? *Don't get gay married then!* I don't like the idea of marriage in any capacity, but I would never take away other people's rights

Welcome! I remember clicking onto my first Jamie video and instantly subscribing too! A lot of learning, debunking, and laughs happen here. Also, totally agree with your comment. Homophobes want others to be mindful of their feelings while still disregarding the safety/rights/etc. of the people they are harming.
I'm an illustrator, and I've seen better. When it comes to political art, you don't want to overlabel everything, as it implies your audience is too stupid to figure out the message themselves. Then again, these are homophobes, so they probably do need things spelled out for them.
6:28 OMFG. I apologize on behalf of all adequate russians. I remember when this ad came out. so freaking frustrating and embarrassing. but the good thing is that right after that, there was a trend where people posted drawings of this happy family with hashtag "yes, I choose" :)
Ok so not really related to the video but I came out to my health teacher today as non binary and that I wanted to use a different name and pronouns. And guess what? She actually accepted and respected that! She said she would use my name and pronouns and I'm so damn happy :)
If I remember correctly the guy who's picture that they used in the advert about twins responded stating that he did not have a twin and that both were photos of him and that he was indeed gay but that was a few years ago so I'm not really sure.
I was reading an article about gene editing and CRISPR, and at one point it said something about changing peoples sexualities with genes-? And I (who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community) was like, “uhm, what? You can’t change a person’s sexual orientation with gene editing…”
There's a genetic component to sexuality, but it's definitely not a single gene or a small amount clustered together, not to mention all potential factors are not identified anyway and even if they were they're not guaranteed to be the only thing that'll influence sexuality once it develops so... ... good luck with your planned orientationhood, I guess?
"I identify as" jokes that are funny: Aroace agender people saying they identify as a void "I identify as" jokes that are not: Cis people saying they identify as an attack helicopter
That first one is just so funny to me because it reeks of privilege. Oh no we feel marginalized because we got called out for gate keeping marriage! You are not the victim Karen
But he is technially still correct in so much as he's talking about changing it deliberately yourself rather than it evolving over time. Your sexual and romantic attractions may change/evolve during your life but you can't actively choose to change that. That change is outside of your control, and even when your attraction changes your orientation will still be abrosexual...unless I'm misunderstanding entirely what abrosexual & abroromantic means? And I apologise if I have misunderstood because it's not one I've come across before and I had to look it up. All I know is that for myself, as a bi-demi/asexual & biromantic, my sexual attraction fluctuates depending on the depth of my emotional connection with a person, but it's not my choice as to _when_ I find someone sexually attractive, and when I do that doesn't change my orientation from being demi-ace. I think if we could choose to change our sexual/romantic orientations I'm pretty sure many of us would, because life is harder when your orientation is not understood by the cishets (tm), you face discrimination, or live in fear because of it, etc. Maybe that feeling is less common now, or at least in more accepting countries/states, but there's been times when I knew my life would have been easier if I wasn't demi-ace and biromantic. IDK I guess I cycle round on that feeling depending on the day of the week lol.
@@hawkeyescoffee6399 yes i know what he means lol and nah i wouldnt change my sexual/romantic attraction for the world. Id rather be myself than have others tell me what i should be or what i should like.
I think the Russian ad was meant to be heavily transphobic and that was supposed to be a non-passing trans woman, not a gay man, and the implication with the dress was that they'd "trans the child". I can't even, I'm so fucking mad and disgusted.
Thank you for reaction to the Russian ad. Fortunately a lot of people (even not that lgbt friendly) saw how stupid it was. Some made jokes and memes out of it and some recycled hate massege into arts and stories, showing this family being happy and doing great in the future, and explaining the dress momemt like "it's for the boy's sister, who will be also adopted soon" :)
I love how literally a quarter of the entire population are raised by a single parent and no one bats an eye, but then when there’s 2 parents of the same gender: “Oh no!!! They don’t have a parental figure of the opposite sex to look up to, the world is doomed!”
ive come out like 4 times to my parents, updating them on how i think of myself, they accept me everytime and help me to discover myself. the world is a complicated place and sometimes i do wish i was just a cishet person because that would be so much easier but im being who i am. but my parents are so supportive of me and my parents recently got quite mad when they heard my church had mentioned about how lgbtq+ is wrong and my parents are considering changing churches or speaking out to them about that, thats what good parents do, they care about their child and the environment they’re in.
That trans one, kinda made me feel that...i shouldn't be trans, and I'm sad and scared. But the good thing is that you are here and you debunking it. Good thing you are talking about.
Whether anyone 'should be' trans is an argument for discussing an ideal world, utopian or dystopian, where everyone gets to be what they *should* be. You are who and what you are, and nearly all of the time, that's completely and utterly fine. I certainly believe that to be the case with you. Good luck going forward.
The russian ad is an official ad for the voting about new constitution (basically it was promoted like anti-gay constitution but actually was for the president to be able to rule for a bit longer). I watched it at the time it came out and was actually surprised how much good reaction followed. The final question was “Would you choose THIS future for the country?” and people created hashtag “yes I would” (Давыберу) with a lot of heartwarming art of this family. New Constitution was approved, but the votes were clearly and shamelessly faked. So even the homophobic propaganda doesn’t work so good anymore.
Thank you for doing these videos, Jamie. They're like touchstones, helping us see the bs against us out there, and being ready for it. Stay strong, my dude.
It really is a nice illustration of bigotry. They're all so sure they're persecuted and that they're actually such really nice people. And then coming to the end and telling each other they'll support èach other. Here's a thought. The poor oppressed dears in the ad are anti-same-sex-marriage. Would they also be the ones who would deny an unmarried gay man access to visiting his partner in a hospital? Same sex marriage has put a stop to a lot of that type of discrimination, but these "loving" people probably wouldn't admit that it even happens.
First ad basically be like "I'm just really into punching people in the face. But I'm worried if I punch people in the face they won't like me. I'm clearly being discriminated against!"
The worst thing about russian ad is that these amendments were accepted (over a year ago already (maybe even two??)) and I live in this country and it is pain...
I research horrifying stuff for my webcomic, I sometimes watch pimple popping or what have you to relax, but it's only sh*t like those ads that actually manage to make me want to gag. That first one especially.
"What is a proper family? A family provides love and support and compassion." As a queer person with homophobic/transphobic parents, the second i came out i didn't have a family anymore Although arguably these things weren't given even before that
The, "all or nothing," mentality around who deserves rights is so confounding. I get that there are things that are all or nothing, I'm autistic and have ADHD, I tend to approach situations with the mindset of, "well, I need to to it all to perfection, or there's really no point in doing it at all." But the idea that INCLUSION will lead to EXCLUSION or even the loss of rights is preposterous. Giving people THE SAME ACCESS AND RIGHTS that you have, does not take away from your rights and access. Your rights are not a finite resource that's gonna get all used up and then, "oh no, all the rights are gone, what will we do??" Absolutely ridiculous.
Nothing can be said about the russian ad that hasnt already been said in the comments, just want you to know that in Russia it was a BANGER, everybody spoke about it, both LGBT+ folks and homophobes.

@Innohasclay
to this day i don't understand how
Same Sex could be attractive to same sex
BIG mood lol

"Its so hard telling gays they're inferiorrrrr"
Does anyone know how old that video is though?
yeah. it was so ridiculous i was sure it must be parody sort of thing
Can those people even name anything good in the world that runs specifically on a set of load-bearing straight-only marriage laws?
I'm from Russia and that advert is not only homophobic, but is also promoting that those constituon changes will prevent homosexual marriage. But like???? We don't have it anyways??
And you may ask, why are they using that theme then? Because they tried to encourage traditionalist and elderly people to vote for those changes, which actually just make censure even worse and give the president another chance to be a president
And he is ruling our country for 20 years, which are my whole fricking life :)
I mean Putin wasn't a president for 6 years in my life, but he was a prime minister and Medvedev, who was the president is from the same party and has the same views (might also be just a puppet in his hands, who knows)
And yeah, the actor, who was "the dad" thinks the advert is shit, but, as I remember, didn't properly apologize
Oh and another "fun" fact:
Another advert for constitution changes used religion too :)) They promoted, that God will have a place in constitution
Uhm, first of all, what about being a non-religious state with lots of different religions??? Second of all, why the heck is that necessary?? Are we burning churches or what?

Nice 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 explaination
Someone: You can't be no gender. You were born a man or a woman.
Me: I was born a baby.
that Russian ad also felt mad transphobic. like obviously cis gay men can present as fem as they want, but the fact that they referred to that person as the kid's "new mom" and then played into the transphobic idea that trans parents will force (presumably) cis kids to be trans makes me think that they wanted to villainize trans ppl too. like just one ad, demonize the entire lgbt community, basically admit you'd rather kids spend their entire childhoods in overcrowded, underfunded orphanages than be adopted by loving parents.
also i loved the orphanage workers' faces at the end. granted i'm not Russian so maybe the adoption process is different, but did they really not interview both parents? did the dad just walk in and say "i'll take this one" and they said "oh thank god take him" without knowing who the other parent would be or even if there _was_ another parent???
That was basically what I thought after I saw the kids expression upon seeing his new "mum".
Like, did the parents not MEET the child before adopting them!
Ridiculous as it is, it's a Russian amendments advertisement, they don't rely on realism but on scaring people and forcing them to vote
YOU SAID EVERYTHING I WANTED TO SAY! The way the guy standing outside was portrayed felt very...off, extremely similar to the "stereotypical gay" people that are portrayed in homophobic media
There's nothing wrong with feminine-presenting men (which includes gay men), but his whole character seemed to be made with the purpose of villainizing gay people and invalidating feminine-presenting men regardless of their sex orientation.
You see the thing is, in Russia (I mean by that older people, at least for me and my friends that is) trans people come up in the conversation only to mock someone for looking outside of whays stereotypical for their gender, like "whAt arE yOu, a trAnsExUaL??" To a dude who wears make up or "female" clothing
It is also so normal to misgender a trans person like the moment you learn their past, it is alsmost not normal to not misgender them (Fun fact, they/them pronounce doesn't exist in Russian language, if in english singular they is found as early as 1600, in Russia we default to "he" when we don't know persons gender, which certainly doesn't help)
Gay people are also depicted as feminine like 99% of the time, (it is illegal to show gay people without mocking them by the way ;>) so ad likely was targeted at them (my friend was called russian analog of the f word for wearing a choker, and he is so straight it's just fucking hilariously sad)
Sorry for venting, again, I'm speaking of personal experience, aside from law it may differ for other people

"I'm not a homophobe, they dont scare me" has the same energy as "I'm not a racist, I'm a pianist"
Because they ignore the part of the definition of "phobia" that says "or aversion" they just see the "fear" part and say, "see? That's not me!"
Oh they're very much scared of trans and gay people; they just don't wanna admit it. It's why they'll never accept them no matter what
What I expected from watching this video: "haha, homophobes are funny!"
What I actually got from watching this video: homophobes believe they're victims of discrimination, I may be turned down when trying to adopt because I'm trans, people seek out and support conversion therapy because of internal homophobia.
btw It's morning for me
Actually beforehand trans people in Russia could get married and adopt children, but, as far as I know, now it's not and that pisses me off
Seriously I can't stand people acting like they're oppressed when they aren't and the only ones who aren't oppressed is no one because everyone is oppressed have you ever noticed how police react during protests as soon as they're given a reason they shut it down that's because the government doesn't like the people being visibly unhappy with their government because that makes that government look bad and the only way to stop all, of this oppression is to boogaloo

The Russian advert is the most upsetting one of these, since homophobia in Russia is supported by the goverment.
(Current estimates are that in terms of sexuality, perhaps 5% of the population are some form of LGBTQIA+ -- and only around 1 in 150 people are transgender.)
The thing is, it's overwhelmingly straight, cisgender parents who time and again show that they wish to FORCE a particular sexuality and gender identity on their children.
@@wghmnb9136 are you still crying about transpeople?

If I remember correctly the guy who's picture that they used in the advert about twins responded stating that he did not have a twin and that both were photos of him and that he was indeed gay but that was a few years ago so I'm not really sure.
The first one reads like a parody snl skit and not an actual real ad that someone paid money to make lol
His nose ring fits him so well also I'm kinda early for once

I was reading an article about gene editing and CRISPR, and at one point it said something about changing peoples sexualities with genes-? And I (who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community) was like, “uhm, what? You can’t change a person’s sexual orientation with gene editing…”
There's a genetic component to sexuality, but it's definitely not a single gene or a small amount clustered together, not to mention all potential factors are not identified anyway and even if they were they're not guaranteed to be the only thing that'll influence sexuality once it develops so...
... good luck with your planned orientationhood, I guess?
"I identify as" jokes that are funny:
Aroace agender people saying they identify as a void
"I identify as" jokes that are not:
Cis people saying they identify as an attack helicopter
Yes
To add one I find funny
Non binary people saying "I want to be perceived... as a threat"
Non binary people responding to "Neither gender? How else am I supposed to identify you?" with "You dont."
That first one is just so funny to me because it reeks of privilege. Oh no we feel marginalized because we got called out for gate keeping marriage! You are not the victim Karen
"You can't change your sexuality"
Me: *is an abrosexual and abroromantic*
My monke brain : Good for you, **bro** !
My rational brain : Dangit me that's **not what abrosexual means!**
Oohhh! It's not every day that I get to meet a fellow abrosexual.
So am I, wouldn’t change it for anything.
That first ad was bizarre. I can't believe someone actually made that. I wish all of these were satire.
It's a real shame these people are being forced to enter into same-sex marriages.
No one’s forcing anyone to marry anyone.
@Kenneth Animates
I know. It's sarcasm.
“ yes i have friends who are gay no i don’t think they should have rights”
"A family doesn't have to be like mum, dad , two and 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀"
Ah yes i cant wait to grow up and have a half of a kid
I think a half child means the child isn’t born yet.
Ah ok
Naw 2.5 is an average. We don't gotta worry about half of a child running about lol!
I love how literally a quarter of the entire population are raised by a single parent and no one bats an eye, but then when there’s 2 parents of the same gender:
“Oh no!!! They don’t have a parental figure of the opposite sex to look up to, the world is doomed!”
That's what I keep telling myself for years
ive come out like 4 times to my parents, updating them on how i think of myself, they accept me everytime and help me to discover myself. the world is a complicated place and sometimes i do wish i was just a cishet person because that would be so much easier but im being who i am. but my parents are so supportive of me and my parents recently got quite mad when they heard my church had mentioned about how lgbtq+ is wrong and my parents are considering changing churches or speaking out to them about that, thats what good parents do, they care about their child and the environment they’re in.
@@kazikek2674 thanks
I may not be a transfolk myself but know that you are valid and you are beautiful! Keep on keepin' on my fine friend!
I feel like the septum is a necessary step in anyone's gayhood
The russian ad is an official ad for the voting about new constitution (basically it was promoted like anti-gay constitution but actually was for the president to be able to rule for a bit longer). I watched it at the time it came out and was actually surprised how much good reaction followed. The final question was “Would you choose THIS future for the country?” and people created hashtag “yes I would” (Давыберу) with a lot of heartwarming art of this family.
New Constitution was approved, but the votes were clearly and shamelessly faked. So even the homophobic propaganda doesn’t work so good anymore.
Honestly, I will never understand why Russia even tries to pretend it's a democracy.
"What will gay marriage mean for sex education?" Assuming sex education was all that great and thorough to begin with
Thank you for doing these videos, Jamie. They're like touchstones, helping us see the bs against us out there, and being ready for it. Stay strong, my dude.
"be yourself, accept others" BUUUUT do as I told you, I don't accept you or your rights to get married(?
i feel like the "we might lose some rights" is like thinking that gay people getting rights is somehow away from straight people...
Everyone in that first one basically said 'I don't care what you do or who you are, just don't be gay! Otherwise, you do you!'
*Gigantic Face Palm*
It really is a nice illustration of bigotry. They're all so sure they're persecuted and that they're actually such really nice people. And then coming to the end and telling each other they'll support èach other.
Here's a thought. The poor oppressed dears in the ad are anti-same-sex-marriage. Would they also be the ones who would deny an unmarried gay man access to visiting his partner in a hospital? Same sex marriage has put a stop to a lot of that type of discrimination, but these "loving" people probably wouldn't admit that it even happens.
First ad basically be like
"I'm just really into punching people in the face.
The first one made me so mad, wtf, how they don’t realise that they’re being so hypocritical?
"What is a proper family? A family provides love and support and compassion."
As a queer person with homophobic/transphobic parents, the second i came out i didn't have a family anymore
Although arguably these things weren't given even before that
The, "all or nothing," mentality around who deserves rights is so confounding.
I get that there are things that are all or nothing, I'm autistic and have ADHD, I tend to approach situations with the mindset of, "well, I need to to it all to perfection, or there's really no point in doing it at all."
But the idea that INCLUSION will lead to EXCLUSION or even the loss of rights is preposterous. Giving people THE SAME ACCESS AND RIGHTS that you have, does not take away from your rights and access. Your rights are not a finite resource that's gonna get all used up and then, "oh no, all the rights are gone, what will we do??"
Absolutely ridiculous.
Nothing can be said about the russian ad that hasnt already been said in the comments, just want you to know that in Russia it was a BANGER, everybody spoke about it, both LGBT+ folks and homophobes. Idk im just so happy you watched it makes the world feel bigger- Its not like now since you saw this ad you could come to Russia like some sort of superman and demolish all the homophobia in here, but definetly felt like it lol. I feel?? Protected?? Safe??? Knowing than regardless off how hom0phobic my country is there are people, both fron Russia and outside it, who know how ririculous those laws are. Thank you for reviewing it, you totally made my day, Jamie❤❤❤❤
"What did I just watch?". 'Murica. You got 'muricad.
there was a girl in my seminar last year who legitimately thought that people were "intolerant of her views" because it's not as socially acceptable to be homophobic anymore.
It’s adorable to see homophobes play it like gay people asking for equal rights. I hate to say it but gay people don’t hate straight people so why should they get to hate gay people?
Please tell me that the first one is satire...it just *has* to be satire...
Unfortunately it's an actual ad made by an organization called "Catholic Vote". It was their response to the Supreme Court's decision re: gay marriage several years ago.
Ah. The catholics. That explains why the ad was so ridiculously tone deaf.
If I was an orphan and I got adopted by two guys I think I'd be too happy about having a FAMILY at all to care that I don't have a mom.
