should use tools accordingly, this guy was clearly trying to break his BK-2, on that tree you should use an axe or a saw and not a hammer and a knife. He doesn't even know how to take down trees properly, wtf was that beaver like chopping is all about? He almost injured himself, cause who knew which way that tree was gonna come down. One word to describe this - total moron.
I'm glad you used a hammer as a baton because if it was a piece of wood, I would've been concerned about my bk2 because i thought it was indestructible (normal use). The shock from the hammer is what broke the tang.
Wow an amazing repair and restoration! You need to send all your work into Becker they need to know about this great series and production. You need to give it a nickname
I've got a vintage pocket knife with the safety liner lock snapped in half, I don't have the other piece to weld back, gonna try cutting new half from a wrench with plasma table and tig welding it to the side that is riveted in.
Just use the right tool for the job. This shows that ANY knife can break when outright abused. The secret is to learn to use your knife to make tools that can do the work without putting your knife at risk, like making wedges and what not for batoning for example.
because no one in their sane mind would have thought that some moron is gonna go chopping trees with a freaking knife and steel hammer, that is what an axe is for, gosh people are just plain stupid
Bk2 Mk 1 would not of broken. Skeletonised tangs are not a full tang. I have broken a bk2 also and a bravo 1 because of skeleton tangs. Esee 5 is the way to go. Great vid

I've beat my cold steel machete with a steel hammer , and my Western W49 had one taken to it by the previous owner Its not good on a knife but the worst damage that should occur is dings to the spine
@Re nato the old westerns were 1095CV and not too bad on brittle , but they were also not skeletonized , also not very thick blades ... My w49 clocks in at 5/32" thick
@Re nato western used their 1095CV up until about two years after they were bought out by camillus ( 92-93 ?) , probably left over blanks But my particular W49 was made between 1973 and 1976 heat treat on them is about 57-58 HRC , maybe a bit harder , but they aren't skeletonized , it's a full slab of metal with 3 , 3/16" holes for rivets or pins , and I don't believe they ever changed that tang design But the 1095 CV used by western is easy to sharpen , holds an edge really nice , and it's somewhat corrosion resistant , really good steel , just a shame camillus screwed them over multiple times Westerns were once as good a knife if not better than any case ... Of that era , case has declined sharply sadly
thanx for showing the design flaw of cutting parts of tang out , this is why i wouldnt buy this knife from day one . if it were solid tang i would have a bk2 and 7 . and how much difference does skeletonizing tang really make in performance , i doubt much while coming at big cost to prying/banging strength . and when your counting on a knife for seroius times prying/banging strength is very important
I would have filled it the skeleton of the tang with welding rod or mig welded it all. Then slowly ground it down. All that anodized blue is just the same weak spot again. But if using it for not trying to chop a 10" tree and hammering it with a hammer lol. It will last for general use 😁
I was really disappointed when I found out that this knife has a skeletonized tang. The only reason I bought one was so that I could always have one knife that I know can handle anything in a worse case scenario. I just don’t have confidence in a knife with cutouts.I feel like I might need to buy an ESEE 5 to replace it, which is a shame because I actually like everything else about the BK2 better than the ESEE 5
I have an original BK2 that ETHAN BECKER picked out for me when I met him at SMKW pigeon forge Tn. I had him sign the box for me. No skelton handle on mine.
Yeah, the original versions weren’t skeletonized. Yours has the BK 2 stamped into the side of the blade I assume. Mine has BK2 laser etched on the blade, which is the version with the skeletonized tang. I just wish they would mention it in the description so that I know what I’m getting. That’s sweet that you got a signed one.
@@1mataleo1 not only that. But mine was the first run with no stamp or etch. I asked mr Becker to chooss for me and he asked what my purpose was. I said im lost on a deserted Island. He then pulled out the BK2 and said (this should work.) Then he told me that he just helped his state pass a no restriction knife law. I said please sign my box and he asked an employee of the knife store to get him a sharpie.
I mean ya not for nothing you used a hammer to baton a tree down which also it's just a knife not a axe so of course that would happen. I do find it interesting that if u are in a situation and u have only this knife it's interesting to see the result
why not use an axe on the tree of that size, and what a hell is that beaver style chopping? He clearly didn't know how to take down trees safely and was an idiot for breaking his knife. Total dumb ass, if that tree landed on his head maybe his IQ level would have came up a bit higher.
That has to be some BK-2 clone. My BK-2 has been to hell and back and hasn't broken. I've used it for everything from light carving to prying a car door at an accident scene
No it's not a clone. He was just doing a stupid test. Hammering it in with a steel hammer, into a 10" thick tree. It's a knife, it's made to cut sticks, food, rope, etc.
Well done buddy great revival for your knife 👍💪 What is the tool you use for sharpening it's pretty cool and where do you buy your blue stuff for giving that Nice patina to the blade? Ciao
Ok...In my opinion this is not a great camping/ bushcraft/ forestry knife. This a huge clumbsy thick knife, witch the main "plus" is being a good "hammer", "pry-bar", "shovel" etc, for urban SHTF situacions. So, i think hitting a knife with metal (or what ever) in a disaster/emergency situacion, to eventualy rescue someone or your self is "acceptable". It should tolerate most of that, because that is it's "design purpose". So...i can't see this any other way than a major (design) flaw... This being said, anyone knows if it's possible to weld some metal plates in those holes to restore some structural strenght?
That's why you don't hit a knife with metal I'm hoping you were testing it out do you see what type of abuse it could take thank you for that goes to show my knife will probably last a long time even though I hate the idea of having those Hollow spots in a heavy-duty knife that's just words going to break instead of them putting those in those holes in the handle to lighten it up no they put those holes in there so that were it would break for the simple fact is it's a tank of a knife unless you doing stupid it ain't going to break
@Willian Xavier. I know. I was so annoyed when I found out that the bk2 has a skeletonized tang. I just don’t have the confidence in it that I would with a true full tang knife. Now I’m going to have to waste money and buy an ESEE 5
Man, use a bolo/machete knife to hack wood. That knife is too short to have enough momentum to go through hard surfaces. It broke because you hammered it in, thus, misused/abused it. Poor knife.
Gee, and he probably still hasn't figured out how it broke!!! Probably even blamed the knife for breaking!!! That's why he's fixing it, because Ka-Bar won't issue a replacement for such a stupid act. Ethan Becker shook his head while saying; 'Not a chance in Hell!' See THIS is why there is a BK9!!!!!!
awesome job! great editing so much to learn about this.... And as for the knife restoration that's so cool love talking with ppl and every once in awhile they have a piece of kit that's been through it all and holds alot of value I hope to live a knife that much one day but I've yet to find my "Jessica "("Chris Tanner")
Adam Sejbuk, the solid one was only Camillus and the first version of Kabar, both are very hard to find nowadays in good condition and for reasonable price. To visually identify such first version of the Kabar knife without removing scales, it does not have pommel stick out from the rear side of the handle.
Stopped recommending Ka Bar after they changed from full tang to skeletonized tang. You can see how it affected the durability of the whole knife. They always break on that weak spot.
It has been surprisingly difficult to find videos and information about welding a tang back on. Thank you.
Kabar should stop doing that stupid cuts in the handles ,that create a weak spots!
That's y I never buy all Ka Bar Becker series knife
User error. Thats why you buy an axe! Kabar more than strong enough for the tasks it is designed for.
@@buster23271 bruh

It makes knives lighter. And they think its good... I love my good ol' heavy knives... Too bad they only makes "light" knives now..
That's what's good about a thick blade knife, you can fix them if by chance you severely misuse them..That's a damn good knife..
I'm glad you used a hammer as a baton because if it was a piece of wood, I would've been concerned about my bk2 because i thought it was indestructible (normal use). The shock from the hammer is what broke the tang.

Canadian prepper sent me and i have to say youre videos are really inovative and have good quality. Keep up the good work
Ditto
Does Becker/Ka-bar not warenty their knives?
Hit a knife with a steel hammer? Wtf is wrong with people
What? It makes it easier to cut through there is no other way
The "other way" would be to use a small log as a baton. Steel on hardened steel is generally a bad idea
how's the knife holding up? Thanks.
I've got a vintage pocket knife with the safety liner lock snapped in half, I don't have the other piece to weld back, gonna try cutting new half from a wrench with plasma table and tig welding it to the side that is riveted in.
No sabía yo que debajo de las cachas este cuchillo tenía esa debilidad, vaya con todo lo que me gustaba y esto la verdad que no contaba con ello.

See , if the knife were solid and not skeletonized this wouldn't have happened.
He tried to cut a tree that was way too big hitting the knife with a hammer, this is not the way you have to use it.
🤣
It could happened also
No cooling the knife off? Wheres the re temper since it was heated up multiple times in this video.
Just use the right tool for the job. This shows that ANY knife can break when outright abused. The secret is to learn to use your knife to make tools that can do the work without putting your knife at risk, like making wedges and what not for batoning for example.
my gosh he broke a bk2! took crazy abuse though
yes

Consulta quedaría bien soldandole los espacios o sea rellenar los dos huecos?? saludos de Argentina
Eso es lo que quiero hacer.......lo hiciste rellenar los huecos??????
Did the welding effect the heat treatment of the blade.
I'm fairly certain it did. Plus, hand grinding also heats up the blade.
those cutouts in the knife are way too huge. why make a super thick knife if they're just going to weaken it so much there?
because no one in their sane mind would have thought that some moron is gonna go chopping trees with a freaking knife and steel hammer, that is what an axe is for, gosh people are just plain stupid

Broke this hitting it with a hammer?
From first glance I'm asking Y would U hollow out a knife in that spot ??????
Ka-Bar "Full Tang" = Absurd
more like swiss cheese tang
Nice restoreation, a little tip though you should have retempered that knife after welding it to even out the stresses. Enjoyed and subbed, take care
Yup
Should have ran an entirely new heat treatment most likely

Even an axe would break if you are hitting it with a steel hammer when splitting wood . Any woodworker knows that ...

Why do they hollow out the handle on knives. It's an obvious weakness.
Why you would use a hammer on it is beyond me.

This is Kabars biggest mistake. One of the world's toughest knives with Hollow handle. This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
