    I REALLY ENJOY my Becker BK9 and my BK2, They are the BEST DEAL for a QUALITY knife, I was chopping wood with my BK9 for literally 7 hours and when I was done it could still cut paper like a razor blade!! These knives are AWESOME!!

    I don't think most viewers would agree with your statement of it not being a good bush knife. As far as weight is concerned it's more a matter of how you "budget" your weight. I would rather have a heavier tool and pass on packing a book or a extra pair of shoes for example. And by packing a knife like a BK2 you actually save yourself a need to pack an axe or hammer. I'm mean your not going to build a cabin with a BK2 or anything but damn it's a great multipurpose knife.

      Infidel Lives Matter I have watched enough of these videos to realize this persons skills revolve mostly around rabid consumption. Without doubt a smarter and stronger person would find this more useful and less cumbersome. And perhaps that guy wouldnt need to go to his friends house to have it sharpened. I like it, so I'm going to order one.

      @Infedelliversmatter I agree with your statement about budgeting weight. And if you like the BK2 and already have one and are happy with it, more power to you. I would contend though, that there are probably better options for budgeting that weight. Now Environment can certainly be a factor, but Ethan Becker himself has said that if you need a hammer in the woods the best thing to do is cut a club to do that task, weighs nothing. The BK2 is not even a great hammer. As far as replacing an axe or hatchet, yea, sort of, but a longer blade for the same or less weight will do much more good as a hatchet substitute than the BK2 will. I think a longer blade is really a must if you want to replace a hatchet with a knife. Putting the BK2 into a weird nebulous zone of not quite the best blade even for what you are proposing. For a new user that is. If you already have it sure, hell yea use it. I think though that most people who want to go with a bigger more multipurpose knife would do better with a lot of other blades, some at less weight AND more capability than the BK2. Better options for the big knife might be Bk7 or Bk9, ESEE6, some of the Condor larger knives, RTAK 2, ect.

      I think it does have it's purpose as a hardcore survival knife. I would like to have one for my vehicle, oh wait I already do, not the BK2 but the Boker BOB which is another short thick blade that doesn't scream rambo. It is the same concept, different company.

    I have covered the ground and several years with this knife by choice. I have others but on trips that matter and when tough times occur this is the go to tool. I have a couple diiferent sheaths I switch between. Personally the weight has never been and issue. I have beaten the bk2 with out mercy and it shrugs it off. It has never dissapointed me. And with a bit of work it is shaving sharp.

    I bought one BK2 last year and I love it even though it is hard to remove it from the sheath at first, but other than that I would be glad to have this knife on my hip. It is great for camping and is nice for cutting wood, or preparing food even though I keep a folding knife for food preparation.

  • @ClockCutter

    Fashion trends come and go, even here, or especially here, on TH-cam. But I don't see why this isn't a great survival knife, since it perfectly satisfies what is arguably, in my view, the most important survival knife criterion: durability. Isn't its demotion to camp knife a bit harsh? Busted down to car kit knife? Ouch.

      Second kind of cool. Nothing wrong with that. I am curious though, do you never get tired of working with such a heavy knife? I found that while the edge could be honed to be a relatively good woodworking knife, that the thing was just so heavy that it became cumbersome to work within a very short time. What was your experience in this regard?

    Take a Becker BK2 and change out the scales. I kept the original sheath and set up a ferro rod and also mounted a QSP Neckmuk by mounting it to the sheath. Kinda gives you an added option with a smaller blade to do more camo tasks. Food prep comes to mind.
    I have however also quit carrying the BK2. I for awhile carried a Halfbreed LBK-01 and now I carry a Swamp Rat Rodent series. Knives keep advancing but I never sell knives so I have a serious collection. But one of my most used over the past years was the Becker BK2. I can still reccomend this knife and I think it makes a great first knife. It is a beast.
    I have never been one of those hikers that just carries one knife. I usually carry a small but decent camp axe. A small folder such as an Ontario Rat and a good fixed blade that can handle a bunch of abuse. I use my knives. They do not sit new in boxes all over the place. Even my Randall made knives have seen some use. Now China has started out producing the rest of the world especially when it comes to folders. They have very competitive pricing but I have to admit I still go after American brands a lot. I am kinda hoping in the future American companies start producing quality mass produced knives of quality again at a great price point.
    I would rather support Americans as much as possible.

    I'll be honest a one pound 5.25 inch knife is pretty hard to justify. Not to mention the quarter inch stock. There are so many knives at each end of the spectrum that blow it away in terms of performance. At 17 oz the 911 from Scrapyard kill's it if you want a chopper and any thinner stocked knife on the smaller end of the spectrum like a BB from Mora will out cut it.
    However there is something you have to like about the BK2. Becker handles are excellent! Cool factor is apparent.

    Nothing on this planet beats a good old fashion pocket knife like a Swiss Army knife or Old Timer for fine tasks. Whats the idea behind having one knife for everything? Carry your big blade for heavy stuff and a pocket knife for little stuff. Its really not a big deal. Women carry around 10 pound purses for life and handle it. Big tough survival guys get knit picky about knife weight ? Simply put the Becker in a basic half fold sheath and cut the belt slots to the middle of the knife. The weight cuts in half. Those ginormous suitcase sized sheaths are pretty but are way to cumbersome, bulky, heavy. When somebody is carrying that you know they are trying to play survival guy.

      Hate to be be mean, but my first thought was it looked like something a pimp would carry. Seems to me he is making the same argument that people make for only having a 22lr as the only rifle you will ever need. I think the best bet is to have a two knife system, but if I'm caught out with only one knife, it will be something I hope is as robust as possible.

    Thanks Adam and I too have changed my go-to blade; evolved. I have the same BK-2 with the linen handle, but like the guy below said, it was 60 miles in the Smokies that changed my mind. More than a dozen times, I asked myself why I brought a 1.5 lb tank on a 7-night backpacking trip. I have since move to a Helle Temagami, but unfortunately haven't been able to put it through many paces. I will enjoy saving the 1 lb weight regardless. Very interested in your "thin blade" current choices. Thanks

    After watching Your older videos I bought a BK2. Gave it away after a week or so. Too heavy and thick to carve, too short for chopping. I started using a RAT7 after that. Lighter, better chopper, batoner, and much better carver. Now I'm thinking about having a custom made, based on the RAT7...

    Your Hedgehog sheath is very nice. I, too, regard it as a functional work of art. And, I can't say enough about the Becker BK2. I've owned it for just over a year and love the knife. In fact, I like it so well that I almost bought a second but decided, instead, to purchase a BK10. A similar design but less bulky. I like your video presentation on the BK2, very much. A wonderful knife! Just might buy another and do some mods.

    I personally felt the BK2 was a decent knife, but it wasn't great. It's one of those 'jack of all trades, master of none' items. It's a bit too beefy/thick/wide to tackle small tasks well, and a bit too short to handle a lot of the large blade tasks. I ended up swapping mine out for a BK9/BK14 combo.

I do think Adam touches on an important concept in that as your outdoor interests can change your choice of tools also may change, I am a hiker and backpacker that enjoys learning survival skills, Adam has become more and more of a bushcrafter, they do more intricate carvings and have an amazing skill set and require tools that accommodate that skill set. It's important to be able to have that courage to change and grow. Oddly enough I have heard rumors that the original BK2 was supposed to be a much thinner knife any truth to that Adam?

    I know this isn't your type of thing to do, but there's this knife made by Svord called the "Von Tempsky Ranger", and I haven't been able to find any videos on it. There are a bunch on the 11 inch bladed version of it, but there literally are NONE on the 6 1/5 inch blade. It'd be awesome if you could review it somehow, although I understand that the majority of the knives you review are sent to you for free by the manufacturer, and the rest are personal purchases.
    By the way, this kind of kick-back video is really cool. Seeing how your opinions and theories change on blades over a long period of time gives a lot of information to guys looking to buy knives, believe me.

      Besides the fact that your comment makes absolutely no sense, I carry my pistol in a vertical holster on my hip. There is no issue of not being able to see the holster when reholstering the firearm, nor is there an eminent possibility of the user stabbing himself when holstering a pistol like there is with a knife. So your argument is really comparing apples and oranges.

    I bought this knife a few years back partly on recommendations from you and I loved it and I still have it but you are correct is a heavy knife and I hate carrying it. So if u had to recommend a replacement therapy knife something less heavy, sharp and around the same price range what would you recommend ?

    Adam, where did you get your McCarty scales for the Becker BK-2?

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that a Camillus Becker BK-2, the new Ka-Bar Becker BK-2 has a skeletinized tang, I think that's why the extra pommel for better balance, Ethan's said the skeletinized tang is just as strong, and my point, why not see more knife manufactor's use the 0170-6C steel, Camillus used it and made all of the Cold Steel U.S.A. made knives, C.S. called it the CarbonV, now Becker is still using it at zKa-Bar, and it's called 1095 CroVan, why don't Cold Steel make the CarbonV, the steel is still being made, and why doesn't Top's use it too, I think the 1095 CroVan is a little better than the reg. 1095, we the buyer's want to know, I like alot of Essee, Top's, knives, Habilis also, but the Plain Jane 1095 stop's me from buying those knives in the reg. 1095, Adam, please go to bat for us, it can't be that much more expensive, but you have to admit, it's better in CroVan than the reg. 1095, Pleeeaazzz help us, that's what your supposed to do for us, you have some clout, pull, they will listen to you, we want 0170-6C
    ○====}::;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;>'s same as 1095 CroVan. look at how the vintage knives in that steel are still sought after,
    Merry Christmas, and a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.

      That's what he's supposed to do for "us"? First of all, he doesn't owe you or me anything. He makes videos and puts them out, into the world, so we can watch them and hopefully enjoy and gain some insight. Not only does he not owe us anything, he's already being very generous with his time. Secondly, you act as if your opinion is indicative of the opinion of everyone else. How do you know that even a single person shares your sentiment? Please take your fucked up sense of entitlement elsewhere, and don't pretend that you have the right to speak for anyone else.

    One more question. I love my bk2 and I have had a Gerber lmf 2 and liked the drop leg carry straps, but I lost my lmf 2 before I could test this idea. Could you try the straps from the lmf on the bk2 sheath that is stock. I'm very curious about this and well purchase another lmf if it works and just give the blade to my girlfriend. Thanks in advance.

    • @yoadrian3814
      @yoadrian3814 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You just take a metal file of a dremel tool and just run over the spine until it will strike sparks, or until it's as sharp as you want it.

    What would be a good stainless steel option equal to this knife?

    • @papageo5
      @papageo5 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you like serrations on a blade, the Gerber Prodigy is a great stainless knife at a great price. It is heavy duty, but lighter than the bk2, but has serrations , which i have grown to dislike. However, I have never had any problems with rust on my bk2, and that is saying a lot because anytime I camp, I am canoeing into my camp sight. By the way, I own both, but I use a Leatherman skeletool way more. Pliers are awesome.

      George Martin Thanks George for the advice on the Gerber, I live in Hawaii, I'm a "indoorsman" that lives in a residential area. The time I will use this knife is a hurricane or tsunami event, I'll be surrounded by water, salty or muddy.

    I loved the knife at first, but when testing, it cut horribly! Yes, you can put a convex grind on it and may cut better, but the fact is, if you do not have a something to sharpen it like a leather strop then you are screwed. Ok, may be not screwed, but i would prefer a knife that i can sharpen on a stone in the field without worrying it. Plus, it is wayyyy to heavy, if you want to baton woid then bring an axe! I was scouts for 6 years and never had to baton wood, so there is no need for such a thick and heavy knife.
