For the budget, this is a masterpiece. As is, 9 out of 10. Really makes you want to watch other Godzilla movies, if they keep the tone and quality.

I really liked Godzilla's movements, his stiff walking and facial expressions felt deliberately in character with the rubber suit to me. Also him swimming like a crocodile helped make it believable that he's a sea creature despite having no sea creature anatomy lol

Didn't even notice the "airbrushed" black during the biting scenes.

The reason the deep-sea fish looked weird is because their stomach balloon out of their mouths due to decompression. I was glad his face lacked movement: reptiles faces do not change. It made it feel more realistic and frightening.

Also, I agree about some of Godzilla's movements - mainly when he fires his atomic blast. The director did it better in Godzilla the Ride, but I guess he wanted to make it maximum Dragon Ball Z level this time around. I thought he looked great in most other scenes. As for some of your other complaints, like the scientist making all these plans, how Shikishima found Noriko in the middle of the crowd at Ginza, etc - a lot of that comes down to the edit. Apparently a lot of scenes were trimmed down and cut to reduce the runtime. I even remeber hearing the director say that the initial cut was close to 5 hours or something like that... yikes. Would be interesting to see if they did a director's cut. I mean, they are already doing a black & white theatrical release to cash in on more ticket sales. Finally, as for the thing on Noriko's neck, I've actually got it confirmed from one of the lead production designers that I am aquainted with that they were G-cells, which explains why she was mostly healed and alive. Anyone not vaporized by the blast would have been exposed to Godzilla's unique radiation and dna, in essence causing them to become something like "living" zombies or super-humans... Perhaps she will fuse with rose DNA and become Biollante :P Joking aside, curiious where they will go with that if they do a sequel. Actually, I did have one other complaint that only history buffs living in Tokyo seem to have noticed. I go into detail about that HERE: th-cam.com/video/_514AYm5FMA/w-d-xo.html

Minus One is a solid 9/10. It isn't perfect but damn near close. I agree about the final shot too btw.

@@reverseangle I read that a full Replica was done of this cool but unemployed prototype from WWII...and recently donated or sold to a museum. Turns out, it's the one from the movie! It was a way to get financing, which was clever.

(minus) One thing to say here... Godzilla -1 i think is more for adults... because i thought it was great but the 10 year old was like "meh" but also subtitles...
But I think Godzilla X Kong was meh... but he was super stoked and loved it. So i think it is more geared to kids.

A follow up has to be a period piece following Noriko and Akiko 15 years later. 1960s Japan with Godzilla as capitalism and westernization, but now step in Mothra +1 [cuz she raises you up] as traditional Japan and nature, with Japan having to find their center and balance themselves or none will survive...

(24:47) There's a recurring idea of so-called "godzilla cells" in previous films (or is that from "beta canon"?) where other lifeforms can be infected by biological matter being shed by the Big G. Lame way to do the whole Western sequel bait? 🤷🤪Godzilla Zero. Did Gen-X skip a couple of generations in Japan? 😉

What are you guys talking about? Godzilla vs Kong has the best CGI in the whole monsterverse series. It’s just the popular thing to trash on the monsterverse.

One of the first things I thought after leaving the cinema was to wonder what you guys would think of the film - and that I would probably need to wait 6 months to find out. 😅
So thanks for pushing this one out quicker!
As a big Godzilla fan, I went into it with pretty low expectations; the trailer didn't do much for me, plus it had an VFX guy as a director, which left me expecting a step down from Shin Gojira. And it really was...
A lot of my complaints could be written off as par for the course in a Godzilla film; cartoony human characters, some poor performances (Shikishima in particular), a plot completely devoid of twists or any stakes (when you just know everyone will survive) and some dodgy FX shots, but after Shin Gojira I feel like I can actually expect more from the franchise...
One thing that really stood out to me was that there was a somewhat uncomfortable theme of 'Oh, the poor Japanese military... WWII was so tough on them!' that I found somewhere between tone-deaf and flat out offensive.

I thought the fact that they criticized the government for sending people to die without caring about them, and had a main character who was disobeying orders made for a more rounded viewpoint. --Robert

I would agree, Minus One ran just a bit too long and I would have appreciated other characters getting development as well.I wasn't too crazy about this one and I'm somewhat surprised at much media attention Minus One caught. I think the best way I can describe how Godzilla moves and behaves in Minus One is that he's like Kraid from Super Metroid. Also holy hell, I wasn't aware of the After Earth debacle, that was just overzealous ambition on Will's part. Great review!

Monsters ate people in older movies, but Toho seems to be opposed to it in modern releases.
