You have to be in the mood for some campy things while shutting down a good part of your brain to enjoy them. My first Godzilla movie was Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, which is basically considered one of the worst Godzilla movies. It was Godzilla versus a giant shrimp because they had a giant shrimp suit laying around and they wanted to make some money. I loved it as a kid, but I'll admit it's not the best Godzilla movie.

But it will make you smile, and cheer, it's so easy to care for EVERY. single. character. on screen. That's a very rare thing in a movie today. So Alteori, one thing you might have missed in regards to Gojira's theme is that for the first time since the original 1954 film, the used both (yes both) themes for their intended purpose. When Gojira was on screen, you were hearing the original theme for Gojira. The second part (when the human characters were taking action) is actually the theme for Humanity.
This is legitimately the best film in the "Gojira" series since the original (which I STRONGLY recommend you watch next, though I would warn you, when I first saw the original Japanese version in theaters, I ugly cried manly tears of manliness).

I might be too much of a purist, but I absolutely hated Shin Godzilla. While I liked this movie, I really hated the changes to Godzilla in this. Not the origin, I'm okay with them shaking some things up in a reboot. What I hated about this one are the changes to the atomic breath, both the end result and the spines popping up as the breath powered up. I also hated that Wolverine style healing factor as well. The second one, I understand kind of why they changed it for this movie when you consider the ending(they had to make a way to defeat him). And yes, I know about the whole G-Cell thing from the Millenium Era, but I really prefer Godzilla taking damage being more meaningful. Conventional weapons should never cut it, pardon the pun.

It's so crazy how it took Toho this long to realize that making Godzilla bigger wasn't the solution. You gotta establish a good setting that you care about only to have Godzilla screw it up. It gives weight to his destruction. I really hope this movie does well so we can can get more of them. Despite only cost 15 million dollars it looks hella good.
In both screenings the audience got up to clap, that's how much of a good impression this movie made and we cannot forget to appreciate the actors who brought their A game to what could have been a forgettable monster movie but they were the heart of it.

The $15 million has me asking lots of questions, is the cost of living in Japan much lower than USA? so CGI artists can be paid less? Or is cost of living comparable to USA so then are they underpaid? Did they hire less crew to work longer hours and they cool with that? Or they really struggled in production? Are USA production crew overpaid then?

Having human characters the audience cares about goes a long way toward the establishment of suspense, no doubt. That's always been one of the hardest details to stick the landing on in a Godzilla film.

What I loved about this movie was how emotionally driven the plot was. Unlike the legendary Godzilla sequels that lacked reasonable emotional depth, this one had a genuine “choosing life over death” message that actually touched me and made me cry throughout the film. Not only that, but the action scenes were genuinely gripping and I didn’t feel like any character could hide behind any plot armor. Each decision carried weight and it felt real! Overall, incredible movie 💙
Puts a lot of shame on todays cheap cash grabbing films!

Just back from seeing GMO. It’s definitely as good, and in some ways better than the original. I appreciated the character development. You truly care about these people and the time spent with them does not detract from getting plenty of Godzilla screen time. The acting is pretty much top notch. The story is tight and moves along at a good pace. The scenes with Godzilla are at least as memorable as the original. Agree that holding off using the full Godzilla theme music till the very end amped up its emotional impact to the max. First movie I have been to in a long time where the audience applauded at the end.

There's 2 instances when Godzillas theme is played,
One on the first attack in the city and the other in the final confrontation with the boats,
And in that scene it's used as a form of encouragement for the humans to have confidence moving forward with the plan,
This is what made the movie for me, and the message "to Live"
Brought me to tears, especially the ending

I think everyone was blown away by the acting and story for the people in this Godzilla film. In Shin Godzilla, the fact it was a bunch bureaucrats was part of the joke. In Godzilla 2014 and King of the monsters, it was just stale cliches tacked on to a monster bash. Here it was really meaningful and important.

Saw the movie today and MY GOD it was a GREAT movie! I remember seeing people being afraid of Godzilla when I watched the old movies as a kid but never really felt that Godzilla was scary... BUT here this movie had me both in awe AND terrified of Godzilla. I thought Shin Godzilla was chilling but GM1 Godzilla made me feel what the people felt in the movie. It was same feeling when I had in Legendary Godzilla King of the Monsters with the fight scene between Ghidorah and Godzilla, small. Oh and the Godzilla theme 😢 so majestically captivating I can never tire of it. Only complaint about the movie not enough Godzilla but BY GOD whenever he appeared, he always commanded your attention! Hands down if you are reading this and haven't seen the movie YOU NEED TO GO!

without any spoilers, M1 felt a lot like if GMK was redone, but without gidorah, mothra, and baragon. this seriously felt like godzilla not just got a reboot, but they took the brutality of GMK, and updated that menace, while putting some new limits on godzilla at the same time. it also put the ptsd of soldiers in the spotlight, and i have to respect that.

Another great detail about the movie is the historical aspects, all the ships/planes/tanks are for the most part, accurate, Takao, Yukikaze and Hibiki were all in service during the years in the film. It's not a big plot point or anything but it's such a tiny detail most films could just over look and instead have a placeholder, buy they made it accurate even down to the destroyers being unarmed

I love this movie! About the actors for Koichi and Noriko, after making this they played a loving couple on "Ranman" that we watched daily for its six month run. So coming into this, as an audience in Japan, we're already emotionally attached to this couple. The best compliment I can pay to the human characters is that I would still want to watch a movie about them even if there was no Godzilla. I also felt pity for Godzilla, in the way you would for a rabid dog that needs to be put down. He's a bomb victim lashing out in anger, a wounded animal.

Man..... This film was a masterpiece. A true Masterpiece. So much Emotion, Love that develops and most of all...Gojira!!!! The way he is fluent in water and the effects were so amazing, then they stuck to the old nostalgic way of the man in a suit walking through buildings. Godzilla looks so real to the touch and his presence is so powerful on the people. Then the Characters.... THEY actually make you care about them, I loved that aspect of simple but deep human emotion mixed with such action at the same time. The music is just icing on the cake honestly, they bring back the classic theme for the Gman from beginning to end building up tension. And as my one spoiler.... No... There are no 2 Godzillas... There is a smaller (Godzillasaurus) at the beginning that completely fucks up the squad the main character was with cuz he fails to shoot it at that moment and Godzilla goes back into the ocean to Evolve. Which I absolutely loved because that is the original story of Godzilla!!! This film will definitely make you afraid of Godzilla, and if you aren't a fan, You dont have to be to see this movie I Promise man. I fr almost cried at the end bruh.

My mom and I have a tradition every Christmas watching a couple tear jerker movies. We call it our waterworks marathon. This is probably the first movie she and I unanimously agree on being in the list within the Godzilla series. Some Godzilla movies have made us cry, but this one. Man, this movie had us at multiple points.
To me it was a bit of a shock too. I've always watched him stomp buildings blast tanks and destroy monsters and I'm always pumped and rooting for him. This time, I wanted them to stop him, to kill him. I wanted every main character and even the SIDE characters to survive. I cared about side characters in a Godzilla movie...

I would TOTALLY watch your husband's version, it sounds HILARIOUS!!! I went to go see GMO as a gift to myself because the past almost 4 months has been really rough, so I needed to treat myself. I saved up for the ticket, my cab fare, popcorn and snacks. This was the first time I went to the movies by myself, which was an interesting experience. I almost p*ssed myself with the introduction of Godzilla, I felt like I was in actual danger!!! This is my top movie for this year!!! I LOVED the character development. Godzilla being a villain was SO COOL!! The movie was a bit loud for me here and there but that's probably do to me having a bit more sensitive hearing. There were between 33 and 35 movie goers there, including myself. Which to me was a bit disappointing but it was nice having a small crowd. It was important to me to go on opening weekend because I dont think I've gone on opening weekend 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Plus opening weekend statistics are the most important numbers and I wanted to support my BOIII!! I LOVED the design of Godzilla and his abilities, how he healed was like "Oh sh*t!! You better run!!""This one's just built different" 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 So funny but yet SO true. Intro Godzilla looked, sounded, acted MONSTROUS, the rest of the movie he was Monstrous, and Monsterverse Godzilla is monster....I hope that makes sense, which I'm trying to say is that minus one Godzilla was a DANGEROUS Monster. When Godzilla was off screen and not doing anything I felt his presence, it was intimidating; imposing; anxiety inducing like he could attack at any moment...like HOLY COW it felt NICE to feel that about a monster/kaiju!!! After finishing the movie I IMMEDIATELY wanted to go purchase another ticket!!! I STILL want to go see it again!!! That has NEVER happened to me before!!! I might actually go do it in another week or so, it is THAT good!!!

Btw, as a quick bit of info, the Godzilla Theme itself was originally supposed to be the theme of Japanese Defense Force, so at the end when they were playing the more uplifting part of it, when all the civilian boats arrive to help, I took that as a bit of a nod to what the theme originally was supposed to be.

I disagree that Shin Godzilla was "afraid." Reactionary, yes, but not afraid. The way he was portrayed, I attribute him to almost a zombie: nearly emotionless/lifeless, operating purely on instinct. I think from what we saw in his earlier forms, Shin Godzilla was probably in a delusional, pained state of mind. Early shots of him made it seem like he was barely aware of what was going on, and almost confused about what was occurring with him in terms of his rapid evolution. While he did exhibit recognition of pain, I never saw a creature who was fearful.

Let me start by saying, I quite enjoyed this movie a lot, and think its a really good movie. That said, I think the movie could have done a lot better job with Godzilla himself. I dont think its the best Godzilla movie, I feel like it belongs somewhere pretty high in the top 10 of the franchise.
TLDR: My complaint is that Godzilla is solely a plot device in the movie, and not a character in the movie. Yes Godzilla is supposed to represent Japans post war guilt and PTSD, but what is he supposed to be in the actual plot of the movie?
Let me explain. Godzilla is properly awesome, powerful, scary, and bad ass in this movie. They did a great job of showcasing his power, and just how intimidating Godzilla cam be. His atomic breath is probably the most awesome and spectacular ever, and that was amazing to see in the theater. BUT... What was Godzillas purpose in the movie? What was his goal? Where did he come from? Why was he attacking Tokyo? These are all skipped over. There is just a Godzilla in the movie, as if that was a normal occurrence, and the people of Japan have to deal with it.
The movie does a great job of showing what Godzilla is capable of. But it does a terrible job of telling why hes doing what he is doing, or where he even came from. Basically Godzilla is solely a plot device in the movie, to further the humans characters story, and not a character in the movie. Godzilla has no agency, or purpose in the actual plot of the movie. Godzilla in Minus One, is a metaphor for PTSD and survivors guilt from the war. And thats as far as it goes. He is only a metaphor, and not a metaphor wrapped up in a character. You could almost edit Godzilla completely out of the movie, and it would not change much.
For example, in the original Godzilla 1954, Godzilla was a metaphor for the atomic bomb. And in GMK Godzilla is a metaphor for the atrocities that Japan committed during ww2. The difference with them and Minus One though, is that the monster also had a purpose in the plots of those movies, beyond just being a metaphor. He has a reason for being in the story of those movies. In Minus One, Godzilla is used as a plot device only, and given no further depth then that. Godzilla is the catalyst and a symbol in this movie, but thats all he is.
I feel like they could have done a little better job, of integrating Godzilla into the plot of the movie. Give him some agency or purpose, other then just being a symbol. There is a throw away line of "Hes expanding his territory", hinting that he is just an animal doing animal things. But his actions in the movie are not animalistic. I hate to compare it to 98, but that movie did a better jog of depicting Godzilla as an animal. The creature simply came ashore to build a nest in NYC, and largely ignored the foliage ie buildings, and the people, until it was attacked and provoked. In Minus One, Godzilla is deliberately attacking the city itself, and the people. Why? Thats not something an animal would do. So hes not acting like an animal, hes acting with deliberate intent. But we are offered no explanation or reason of why.
Its really my only complaint about the movie. That Godzilla is a plot device in the movie, and not a character in the movie. I love Godzilla, and always enjoy it better when hes more then just a metaphor for something. When he has actual agency and identity, and relevance within the plot of the movie. Yes Godzilla is supposed to represent Japans post war guilt, but what is he supposed to be in the actual plot or story of the movie? If that was answered in the movie, then for me it would be in the top 5.

    • @Vespyr_
      @Vespyr_ 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the main reason they focused on the street level character drama is because Shin Godzilla already was a movie that philosophized more about Godzilla and his intentions. Could Minus One elaborated a bit more on this? Definitely. It could have used at least one instance of them pondering what it was they were even trying to kill. But I feel Minus One wanted to leave that to other films, including the original which this is a prequel to. It decided to focus on one slice of what Godzilla meant to a core group of people we can feel for. It's a bit of a Rogue One to Godzilla's A New Hope in this way.

    • @ZillaTheTegu
      @ZillaTheTegu 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Vespyr_ I have no issues with a more street level focused movie. I really enjoyed the community angle this film was going for. But I fully agree that they could have at least had some scenes addressing the fact that they were fighting a giant monster who for some reason is attacking their home.
Also what exactly was the USA or Russia or even Japans governments plan here? Like did they expect the locals to take out a giant monster? Did they think Godzilla was just going to go away? Its weird how the movie treats Godzilla like he is a local threat. Like he was just a Kappa causing a minor annoyance to the local populace. But he is a huge global threat.
Maybe thats what makes me feel a little off about this movie. Godzilla is a giant threat to the entire planet, and no one seems to care.
Maybe this movie will get a sequel, which will be Godzilla vs The World. It would be awesome to see this version of Godzilla, going up against the armies of humanity.
