this has been my favorite setup for pike up here in Montana for about the last two years. such great action. great video. always love seeing your tying tutorials.
I really appreciate the longer videos and detailed explanations. I am fairly new to tying flies and started making custom jigs for Crappie and Bream. I’m moving into some larger ties for Salt water, primarily for Reds.. I always appreciate learning new skills. So thank you
Thank You Gunnar !!! It's come a long way from The Chosen One I tie for Smallmouths and catch a ton of fish. We are upping our game for a trip to Tennessee and chase river Muskies in April. Enjoy your details that really make the difference when you're working at the bench. Take Care - GP
Awesome video. I know nothing about muskies so my question was going to be why is hook placement so important even on a big fly? It doesn’t seem like short striking would be a problem for a fish that swallows such big bait whole but your explanation of how they hold their prey really gives a good answer
Looks very Brad Bohen inspired with the schlappen, flash, bucktail rinse and repeat sequence. Simple yet effective. I like it Gunnar. 20 minutes always turns into 45 minutes lol 😆 and I am fine with that.
Gunnar, beautiful fly as always. I'm having a problem though. Most of my flies are not coming out. Practice is needed. But my question is this. I got some Uni thread same size as you use. I'm having problems with it. 1st, l can't even pull thread hard enough to flare hair without mono breaking. And by my wrapping, it twists like crazy, maybe enough to weaken the thread even more. I have not completed a fly with mono. What am l doing wrong?
Would you consider a Buford head in this fly as an alternative to the bulk heads? Curious is it would have more or less T-bone consider the length of the fly? Thanks
That 2/0 SA210 is more like a 4/0 equivalent in wire gap - also, bucktail does nothing to block or impede hook ups unless you are grossly overdressing the fly.
Well this isn't a typical "recipe" video for sure so I get what you're saying if that's what you're looking for... But it is one of THE most comprehensive videos for understanding musky fly tying concepts. I'm rarely happy with musky flies, and given the amount of material that can be wasted just "getting after it", I do like a having a deeper understanding of what I'm doing along the way. It's a great video for that. I'm very proficient with trout, smallmouth, striper, and salt patterns, but (good) musky flies are a different category entirely. I've watched this video many times and still reference it periodically.
.051" is what I use for my custom Musky shanks, but you'll need a wire bender to use it. .043 and 0.040 are also suitable for the Esox application and 0.040 might even be smaller enough to use Looper tools on or simply round nosed pliers.
@@Gunnar_Brammer I have a wire bender lure maker and wanted to make sure I was using the right size wire. Thanks for the information and enjoy watching your epically long tying videos ha, ha, ha. Looking forward to seeing more musky Pike fly tying videos tight lines.

20mins huh? Always great tie.
What weight rod would you want at a minimum to cast this fly?
This is 10wt territory. You could get away with a stiff 9wt and Shooting head, but 10wt would be for easy all day casting
@@Gunnar_Brammer Thanks! Looks like I'm going to have to start looking for a 10wt!

Love it
Great video as always! How is your hook up ratio with a 2/0 hook in the middle of a lot of hair?
That 2/0 SA210 is more like a 4/0 equivalent in wire gap - also, bucktail does nothing to block or impede hook ups unless you are grossly overdressing the fly.
@@Gunnar_Brammer sweet! Thanks for the reply and the great content tight lines!
Thanks.
do you sell any flys? or where can i buy all that?thanks

I would like to see more tying and less talking .

His videos don't just teach how to tye the fly but he puts understanding in the techniques he uses
That is why it is a beginner fly. Need information
What size wire would you use if you wanted to make your own shanks for musky and Pike
