Brief description of the attractions visited on this tour:
    ST PETER'S BASILICA
Two thousand years ago, in the place where St. Peter's Basilica is built, on the Vatican Hill, there was an arena where gladiator fights, executions and torture took place. According to Catholic tradition, thousands of Christians were martyred there, including the apostle Peter, who was crucified upside down. With so many deaths occurring in the arena, this area has become a cemetery. And it was there that Pedro was buried.
On this date, two thousand years ago, the Colosseum, the most modern arena in the empire, was built and fighting stopped taking place in the Vatican hill region. Three centuries later, Emperor Constantine made Christianity an official religion. As at that time Peter's tomb was already a point of Christian pilgrimage, Constantine ordered a church to be built there, exactly above where the apostle was buried.
This temple, the first in the Vatican, lasted longer than the Empire - it remained in Rome for 12 centuries, to the point of receiving Charlemagne's coronation as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. It was only in 1502 AD, when the ancient Church, already thousands of years old, threatened to fall apart, that Pope Julius II ordered the construction of a new temple, also in the same place: the current St. Peter's Basilica.
With a dome that reaches 136 meters and a grandeur never seen before, the new St. Peter's Basilica took more than a hundred years to be built.
Some of humanity's most important artists worked on the new temple, such as Rafael, Bernini and Michelangelo.
It is the largest and most important religious building in Catholicism and one of the most visited Christian sites in the world.
It covers an area of 23,000 m² or 2.3 hectares (5.7 acres) and can house more than 60,000 devotees (more than a hundred times the population of the Vatican).
    VATICAN MUSEUMs
One of the oldest in the world, the Vatican Museums is one of those mandatory stops during a trip to Rome.
Very interesting museum with works of Greek, Egyptian and Roman arts.
And, this is where the Sistine Chapel is located, where the fresco is painted with the almost meeting of man's lazy finger with the powerful finger of God. Painted by Michelangelo from 1511 onwards, the fresco “The Creation of Adam” is more than a representation of Genesis, it is one of the most important works of art in History.
    SANTO ANGELO CASTLE
Built between 123 and 139 as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, the Roman emperor who was also known for his love of the arts. For almost a century, the building maintained this funerary function, with the ashes of other Roman emperors being stored there. Then, around 270, Emperor Aurelius decided to transform the place into a military fortress, being included in Rome's defense system, given its proximity to the Tiber River. In the following centuries, Rome's wars and invasions contributed to the looting and destruction of a large part of this fortress.
In 590, the time of Pope Gregory, it became the Castel Sant'Angelo. Legend says that Gregory I had a vision of the Archangel Michael at the top of the building, announcing the end of a plague that was ravaging Rome at the time.
Little by little, Castel Sant'Angelo came under papal control. From the 15th century, coinciding with the Renaissance period, papal accommodations were built with luxurious decoration and detailed frescoes.
It was also at this time that the famous passage between the Vatican and the Castle, the Passetto di Borgo, was built.
