The city of Udaipur is known as the "City of Lakes and Palaces". The city is located in the extreme south of Rajasthan, close to the Gujarat border. It is surrounded by the Aravali mountain range, which separates it from the Thar Desert and was founded in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II.
It has also been dubbed "the most romantic place in India" by a former British administrator.
It has seven lakes, the most famous of which is Lake Pichola, and many fortresses and palaces, museums, galleries, natural gardens, architectural temples, as well as fairs, festivals and traditional structures.
    CITY PALACE
The palace was built in 1559 by Udai Singh II, grew over 400 years by 23 generations of rulers and is an agglomeration of 11 mini-palaces, courtyards, gates and narrow stairs linking the various security levels to prevent attacks.
    enemy surprise.
The facade of the palace measures about 244 meters in length and 31 meters in height.
In contrast to the imposing form of the palace, the interiors comprise balconies, turrets and domes displaying delicate mirror work, marble work, wall paintings, silver work, inlays and remnants of colored glass.
At various points, we have beautiful verandas (jharokhas) with breathtaking views of the lake and the city that stretches below.
Prominent precincts and mini-palaces are Rai Angan, the first courtyard for royal coronations, the 17th century Chandran Mahal, Mor-Chowk, Dilkhush Mahal, Surya Chopar, Badi Chitrashali, Baadi Mahal or Garden Palace and Kanch Ki Burj .
We can see a beautiful fusion of architectural styles where Persian merged with Rajasthani and a bit of European decor - quite an eclectic mix. What makes it even more attractive is its location near Lake Pichola.
Today, the City Palace has three parts: the City Palace Museum open to the public, a Heritage hotel and a part where the Mewar royal family still resides.
    LAKE PICHOLA
Picholi was the name of a village that lent its name to the lake. The islands of Jagniwas and Jagmandir are housed in this lake.
One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of Lake Pichola is to take a boat trip and explore the calm waters of this magnificent lake. During the tour, you will enjoy breathtaking views of lakeside palaces such as City Palace, Jag Mandir Palace and Lake Palace.
    PALACE OF THE LAKE
Now a hotel, the Taj Lake Palace Hotel was originally named Jagniwas Palace and served as a summer palace. Built between 1743 and 1746 on the island near Jagmandir in Lake Pichola, the palace, facing east, is a wonderful sight to behold. The black and white marble walls are adorned with semi-precious stones and ornate niches. Gardens, fountains, terraces with pillars and columns line its courtyards.
It was featured in the film “007: Against Octopussy” (1983) as the floating residence of one of the film's stars.
    JAG MANDIR PALACE
Jag Mandir is a palace built on an island in Lake Pichola. Its construction began in 1620 and was completed around 1652. The royal family used the palace as their summer resort and to host parties. Interestingly, Prince Khurram - later Emperor Shah Jahan - was given shelter here when he rebelled against his father, Emperor Jahangir. The palace had such an impact on Emperor Shah Jahan that it became the inspiration for one of the most magnificent wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal.
    SAHELIYON KI BARI GARDEN
Built by Maharana Sangram Singh II as a women's garden, Saheliyon-ki-Bari or the Garden of Maidens is a popular tourist destination. In addition to a small museum, it has several attractions such as marble elephants, fountains, kiosks and a lotus pool.
