-------------- Places visited on this tour:
For this tour, which lasts almost the entire day, I suggest you carry a backpack with water and food. Buy the ticket in advance and this ticket includes the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill and costs 22 euros.
    COLOSSEUM
I started the tour at Rome's main landmark, the Colosseum. It was built almost 2 thousand years ago for the entertainment of the Romans. Today it is in relatively well-preserved ruins that allow you to relive at least a little of that history. Visit time varies between 1 and 2 hours.
It is estimated that the Coliseum, in its heyday, could house between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators with an average audience of around 65,000 people.
It was used for gladiatorial combats and public spectacles, such as mock sea battles, hunting wild animals, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on classical mythology.
It stopped being used for entertainment in medieval times. It was later reused for various purposes, such as housing, workshops, the headquarters of a religious order, a fortress, a quarry and a Christian sanctuary.
In 2007 it was informally elected as one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
Although partially ruined because of earthquake damage and looting, the Colosseum is still a symbol of Imperial Rome.
It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Italian capital and also has connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as, every Good Friday, the Pope guides the Way of the Cross which begins in the area around the Colosseum.
An interesting phrase that an Italian guide mentioned: “When the Romans built something, they built it for eternity”.
During the Middle Ages, much of the marble that covered the monument was removed by order of the popes for the construction of the city's churches.
Initially it was built with three floors and later another floor was added.
The grandstand was divided into three parts, corresponding to the different social classes: the podium, where the imperial tribune was located, for the upper classes, a sector destined for the middle class and a sector destined for the people.
Different ramps inside the building facilitated access to the various sectors and the different social classes never crossed paths when entering and leaving the amphitheater.
    ROMAN FORUM AND PALATINE HILL
When I left the Colosseum, I passed the Arch of Constantine and followed the Via Sacra, until the entrance to the Roman Forum, where the Arch of Titus is located.
This path was the same one that the Roman emperors took in their triumphal arrivals after battles.
Remember that no food or drinks are sold in the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill however there are taps available where you can refill water bottles. The visit can easily take a few hours. It took me about 3 hours and I loved it.
The Forum was the commercial center of Rome. The most important events of the Empire took place there: elections, speeches by politicians and trials. All this made the Roman Forum the center of the world.
Nearby is the Palatine Hill, a legendary hill in Rome. They say that it was in the Palatine where the city began.
When you get there, don't think that they are just fallen stones because they are stones full of history.
