    I ate off plan last night. No reason, other than I was not strong enough to fight the pleasure trap. So, today, I binge-watch Dr. Lisle's videos to set me straight, because no one can do it like he does. Now, I'm going to shut up and watch the rest of this enlightening video. Thanks so much Aj 💜💜💜💞💞💞💞

      CHEF AJ I went to the store for it. This was Dr. Lisle's best video to date! But then again, I say that with every one I listen to. This one split it wide open for me though. 🎶I can see clearly now🎶

    So powerful. Each time I listen I find a new nugget. I consistently get junk food or takeout or wine when I walk home from the train at night. I should stop trying to fight myself and change my environment. Solution - get off at an earlier stop and completely bypass my fav spots

    Listening for the second time and a gem is reveald: about adding one more tweak or modification to get things right. I'm 100% stellar at home and when travelling but slip up at potlucks on rich vegan food. I was taking my own sos free to share, but now recognise I need more support than that. So in addition will take 'extra' food for myself so I can REALLY load my plate, have the VOLUME I need (and the variety!) AND be fully satieted. Well that's the plan lol.

    My problem is “I didn’t have on plan food ready when I got hungry “. My solution is “purse food “ which is “on plan food “ that I carry with me. Often in my purse. I get hungry every 3 or 4 hours so I have to be prepared. 🤓

    Thanks for this Chef AJ, I love Dr Doug Lisle (and Alan Goldhammer), The Pleasure Trap is such an amazing book. I wish I knew you guys in person and could hang out with you, I really do😂 I live in the UK. Became plant based a year ago exactly. I struggle with the social impact of it, especially when family members make stupid jokes. I feel like I need to find a community, some new friends to be around, people on the same page as me. I wish I could move to California ❤️

    I'm one of those who will go out at night to the store to buy chocolate and crisps and cookies... we don't keep it in the house, but I'm okay with going out night after night to buy it... any advice??? it's a massive waste of money and extremely bad for health

    • @CHEFAJ
      @CHEFAJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Stop doing that

    • @wellnessgirl2806
      @wellnessgirl2806 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I used to do that. IT would be at the same time of day and I would tend to go to the same stores , in other words I created a habit. Which according to Dr Lisle means the cravings will return at that time as the nervous system is expecting it (conditioned cram) His advice is to white knuckle it during extinction burst (cravings die off) which can take up to two weeks.
      I would also suggest changing things up at home so maybe eat in a different location, or change something about your meal ritual so that you shift your brain out of its groove and create a new habit. MAybe do a specified activity at a specified time, eg read for an hour, or walk, or craft or call you mother?
      You need to break the behaviour cycle and there will be some discomfort. Chef AJ is correct, ultimately you need to stop and those are my suggestions for how to do it, best of health to you xx

      @tarynschnugh1363 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Anyone else considering how intermittent fasting could actually CAUSE a conditioned cram circuit? I see how IF could theoretically or inadvertently help someone out of a cram circuit, however, I've begun to wonder if fasting all day, many times resisting hunger and restricting the drive to eat, tends to increase my preoccupation with food throughout the day, then once the daily 4-6 hour 'eating window' comes around, I'm so fixated on and anticipating food that it actually makes the urge cram much stronger.
    Anyone had this experience? Perhaps a more balanced eating schedule throughout the day would lessen mental pressure and anxiety around the huge feeding window in the evening and there would be less of a drive to cram because the body and mind haven't been perceiving a shortage of calories all day long on a regular basis. Learning this and conceptualizing this pattern in this way, is a PROFOUND breakthrough for me!

  • @CharGC123

    We've all heard the expression... some people eat to live, and some live to eat? Nature made our brains release chemical rewards when we eat so we are driven to seek out food and don't just starve. Some of us learn early that when we are stressed and/or feeling miserable for whatever reason, we can access that instant "fix" in the same way any addict does, no matter the consequences. This isn't reason...how is seeking inappropriate gratification NOT emotional, what am I missing? I almost always substitute healthy choices for poor ones because I don't bring them into the house, so it isn't about rich food. I am still compelled to fill my face to fill the void no matter how I try to redirect! I got off opiates, quit a 40 y.o. cigarette habit, changed to eating a clean WFPB diet, lost 150 lbs. but even healthy food still screams my name.

    Sure, I'm not afraid of starch. Sure, when I eat SOS free whole plant foods exclusively I slowly lose weight until I hit an equilebrium that is a low weight.
    What I don't get, is where does Lisle get the data that you can only gain an ounce or two of fat a day?
    When I binge, I binge on the most calorie dense vegan food I can get a hold of, and since I am used to eating large volumes of food from eating whole plant foods most of the time, I can put in quite a bit of food in my stomach and I can do it for one week straight until finally it hurts enough that I stop.
    So for example, on a binge day I could scarf down two family size vegan pizzas, an entire large cup of vegan Ben and Jerry's and a liter and a half of coca cola.
    Or I could eat 2-3 pitas with falafel and a lot of french fries, all of them drenched in oil, together with a liter and a half of coca cola. And I could have a fruit salad too to at least get something healthy in there on top of that. :)
    Or 3-5 vegan sandwiches with fried mock meat with french fries and that same coca cola and vegan ice cream.
    I could easily get in any one of these days 5000 calories a day, and that would mean every day I am gaining a pound of fat from excess calories which must explain why when I binge I can gain 5-7 kilograms of weight a week, and only 2-3 of those come off within 2-3 days (the portion that is presumably water weight) and the rest takes weeks and months of SOS free whole plant foods to take off my belly.
    So I don't see how he thinks it's impossible to gain more than an ounce or two of fat a day... I think I have managed to do much more than that every time I went off the SOS free wagon... and I think it's exactly what you would expect that a person who is able to eat 2-3 kilograms of whole plant foods to get 1500-2000 calories a day, to be able to eat 2-3 kilograms of processed food and get 5000-7000 calories a day and those calories need to go somewhere and they can't all go to fidgeting...

      Could be water retention fro salt, food backed up in your intestines. I’ve binged for a week and even I ate right for a few days I only gained 2/3 lbs

    I think Dr. Lisle is brilliant but I disagree with him on this. When we have emotional/physical pain, we look for ways to dull or divert our focus from this pain. In this way, hyper palatable food act as a drug. People don’t use drugs as a way to pass on genes but to numb a pain or experience a pleasure which divert attention from the emotional upset/physical pain.
