    I own both the Decathlon and Ghost Whisperer. I hardly use the latter because I find the Decathlon noticeably warmer, not noticeably heavier, and significantly anxiety-reducing since it would not be a huge financial hit if it were damaged. Unless you're incredibly weight conscious, Decathlon is the easy winner.

    Fit is also important for warmth with down gear.. Too tight of a jacket or too thick of an under layer could flatten out the baffles from the inside and keep the jacket from puffing out and performing well, leaving you cold.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This x1000. I usually take medium in most brands (North Face, Jack Wolfskin, Helly Hansen, Snugpak, Regatta, Columbia, Alpha Industries etc) Went up a size to L when ordering the Decathlon Trek 100 because I had another Decathlon jacket in L that fitted well. The Trek 100 was still too tight around my chest so sent it back for an XL. I figured I would rather it was a bit too long and had space for another layer and wasn’t flattening out the baffles because it’s defeating the purpose of a down jacket if the down is compressed.
      Apart from the sizing, the only things that would make it better would be a chest pocket and hood cinch. Otherwise it’s incredible for €50.

So I bought a Decathlon Trek 100. Got the XL even though I usually wear a large. Size L wasn't available (on sale). Turns out the XL will work just fine since I prefer a roomier jacket. After watching this video I chose to purchase the decathlon Trek 100. When I got the jacket I was very impressed. It's extremely well made. I'm a medium slim fit so I did purchase a size up and got the large. It seemed to fit very well. However, when I attempted to sit down with it on zipped, it was very tight, too tight. I couldn't drive in it unless I unzipped it. I couldn't send it a table without unzipping it, etc. I reached out to the cathalon to see if they would do an exchange for an extra large but unfortunately due to me cutting the tag out they said they would not. I'm not going to trash this company. This jacket is an insane value is simply a warning that if you purchase this jacket make sure you wear it for a couple of days with the tag still intact to make sure it fits you correctly. I purchased a size up and I was only wearing a t-shirt under it and it was too snug. There's no way I could have wore a sweater under this jacket. If you like to layer or even just wear a sweater under your jacket in the winter time. Be very cautious. Make sure this fits you correctly before you cut that tag out so you can get an exchange if necessary to an extra extra large. This is such an insane value. It's very disappointing that over the years that they still haven't straightened out the sizing issue.

    I own both the MHGW (original) and recently got a Decathlon Forlcaz Trek 100 as well. Important differences include: The Decathlon down is not hydrophobic-treated, and so will not insulate at all when it gets damp with sweat or rain/condensation, while the MH will retain a bit more loft and warmth when wet. The Decathlon is very under-sized (runs a size small). The Decathlon XL fits me tighter around the torso (I have large chest and shoulders) than the L does in MH. The Decathlon hood is also not cut as well, more floppy around the face, and doesn't keep out wind as well as the MH hood. The decathlon's fabric looks and feels a bit cheaper than the MH and the colors aren't as nice, but I expected that. That being said, the Decathlon is an amazing value, and will work very well for most people.

    Decathlon is actually a MASSIVE chain of sports stores in Europe. They sell products for a ton of different sports, and they created various brands that they sell for their own products. For backpacking, they have quechua who is more geared towards camping and Forclaz which is more geared towards backpacking, but they also have brands for swimming, cycling, rock climbing, soccer, tennis, etc. They managed to become so big that they make big economies of scale and their products usually have amazing value for the price. ok this convinced me to get decathalon. I'm not a gear snob, but I want it to work. the MH GW is nice I love the hardshell pants, but man the price is way too much for something that will rip. the only odd thing with decathalon is sizing, it makes no sense. it only has chest measurements. Right now, you can't buy it they are doing some new model redesign. not sure what this changes. To me colors are better with decathalon as well.

    I’m sticking with my Outdoor Vitals synthetic fill. It can get damp, has thumb holes and pit zips!! It’s kept me warm down to 30-35°F. The extra couple of ounces for pit zips is worth it.

    Hi! Thanks for the video it helps me alot since I am not an avid hiker.
    I am taking a trip to Nepal in the fall/winter season and I will be doing a 7 day Annapurna circuit trek. My question is will the Forclaz Trek 100 start to feel heavy to wear trekking for 7 days in the Himalayan mountains and I will be carrying my own 30 L backpack I won't hire any porter just a guide on my trip.
    Thanks again Dan, the information on your channel helps me gather information for my travel and trekking trip.

    Excellent. I just got a Forclaz. I wrote the company about the zipper being backwards like on women’s apparel. I thought it was a mistake. They said it’s how they do it. I can adapt. Definitely a great value. Order 3 Xs over your size though. Thanks, Dan.

      😂 I thought the same thing when I ordered it! And you have to make sure that you order US sizes. They sent me a European size originally and it was sized small. US seems to be sized appropriately.

      @@DanBecker right. I asked them why they didn’t mention this on the website. They said they previously had been a European supplier. No big deal to me. They’re very helpful. Also, no tax and free shipping. Very good value.

    My biggest issue with MHGW is that they keep making it in a slimmer build. I bought a couple in the last few years, and in 2XL, the last set I bought simply doesn't fit me. Yet, the one I bought about 6 years ago still fits great. So, I just might check out the Decathalon.

    A lot of this gear you look at the weight and theres obviously a difference but when you hold them in your hands you really can not tell. I had some aluminum black diamond trekking poles already really light. Upgraded to the carbon fiber ones that are half the weight but I could tell zero difference 😂

    How you can compare these three down jackets? Mountain ghost whisperer line is for serious mountain athletes or athletes and the quality and the warmth of these jackets is outstanding. Sometimes the weight of the jackets in the mountains saves lives you know. Most of the times you find them on sale in the half of the price in Europe. Decathlon is a cheep alternative and very bad quality that is ok for someone who is hiking once a month. These top end jackets fron patagonia, arcteryx, mountain hardwear and more are the ferrari of down jackets that can last you from 10 years and more, if you are a serious hiker i see no need to spend your money to something that is bad quality

    So I'm figuring I could diet for a week and save $200. Crazy. I'm a luxury backpacker. Kind of a glamper. The chair. The table. The works. No down..fiberfill. Cheap (but sturdy)tent..very reliable so it's heavy. So I'll lose some more weight. So I like your sensible approach. I'm 75 and am not putting up with that light weight roughing it crap. :-)
