A few weeks ago, the forclaz jacket was on sale at my local Decathlon. I remebered your review from last year, so i bought it for 45;- € , wich is about the same in Dollars at the moment. Until now i am very satisfied. Trank you for the hint and keep up your awesome Workshop. Greetings from Germany.
Just went on my first backpacking trip this past weekend with my girlfriend. Truth time….you inspired us. You made it look fun and doable. Took your advice on many things and we had a blast. We are hooked. Thanks, Dan!
@@DanBecker PS….We had the forclaz jackets based on your recommendation in a previous video. Tempt dropped to the low 40’s and we were very comfortable. Highly recommend!
Thanks Dan, you inspired me to take action and upgrade from my Uniqlo puffer (cheap, synthetic fill but still quite a capable jacket). I dropped $90 on the Decathlon Forclaz Trek 100, 23°F Real Down Packable Puffer. Some thoughts after a couple days use... 1. it's light and warm, 2. the fit is about right; I'm reliably a men's medium (5'7", 155lb) and while body and arm length are perfect, the girth is on the slim side, 3. the fill is "responsibly sourced" duck down, which I can believe given the country of origin and the prominence of duck on the menus there, 4. there are two zippered outside pockets for your hands and that's it, no inside pockets, 5. the hood is thoughtfully contoured so with the zipper zipped right up, the wind doesn't de-hood you in two seconds, 6. it's packable, but there's no stuff bag included. Like it. Good recommendation thank you.
For most people, the Decathlon is the choice. Money saved can go into other gear that is arguably more important when benefit per dollar is considered. Better pack, better sleep system, better layers, etc. Nice to see some good stuff still coming out of Cumulus, too. The Montbell looks perfect for someone who avoids every form of vegetation on the planet, and goes nowhere near a wood burning fire. Should also avoid wearing it while backpacking. 7D nylon is just asking to be poked and torn on every single sharp object that exists.
Bought the Decathlon after watching one of your videos. Very happy I didn't spend $300 to save 4 ounces. Decathlon packs small enough, it's warm to 35F with a base layer, and it's well made. Thanks
Just got the Decathlon mt100 for $60 on sale. Excellent down jacket for the price. Also got a Columbia heavier down with their Omni heat technology that is amazing as well ($50 at Columbia outlet)
Love the Forclaz Trek 100. I’m not a hiker but I bought one for myself for the cold UK winter, and weeks later went back to Decathlon and got a second one 🤣 Now have one with a hood and one without. I still have a Rab Nebula Pro, which I got in 2020. Albeit that’s still an awesome jacket I’m half tempted to just sell it! After getting the Forclaz one I couldn’t see why I’d need anything else!
I was not aware that they even had Decathlon in the US. I bought the jacket he mentioned a while ago and am very satisfied. Here in Europe it costs about €50 I think. It is of course not nearly as warm as a thick down jacket, but for autumn or for use in combo with other layers, as a super light jacket, it is great to stuff into your backpack for long runs in winter, for skiing, for hikes, etc. A great way to stay warm after finishign a long run or ski, after you have sweated and need to not cool down too much. In case no one has already mentioned- the huge hood (on any of these) is of course for the helmet for climbers. Without the oversizing, the hood is useless to those wearing helmets. So it's a good thing.
Temps in the uk aren’t as cold as where you are so I have the Patagonia nano. Mainly as it can get wet and dry quick as I wear it on my bike often when bikepacking. Wish I had the altitude and snowy winters you guys have there. Would make for some epic snow camps
The Decathlon puffy jacken is like uber-popular here in Europe. For that like under 50 Eur price, it performs really good. Cons: The out fabric is thin and ofcourse the down is not hydrophobic.
Just purchased the Decathlon Trek, I am not familiar with any of these, new to the segment. But it turned out to only be 60$ on sale. Hopefully it's warm and comfy. Recommended a large by size chart. I normally wear a medium. I'll gave to look at that EE Torrid jacket also. Thanks for the comments
Walmart had a $45 sale on it a few days ago and I bit the bullet. Best bang for the buck (runs small so be mindful to order a size up), so warm, toasty and light.
I have the Enlightened Equipment Torrid Apex. Very reasonably priced at $ 184.99 and very light at 8.5 oz for Men's medium w/hood. I've taken well below freezing with layering.
Always love your videos! We'd also love to be considered for next year's version of this video. Our Campfire Puffy would be the only one that is fire resistant to keep you safe from the sparks from the fire. Keep up the good work Dan! Cheers.
Great reviews Dan! One jacket that was overlooked was the Enlightened Equipments Torrid Jacket. This jacket is extremely lightweight, synthetic and keeps you very warm. You need to do some reviews on this company. I also rock the outdoor vitals Ventus Hoodie, great mid layer option which I wear all year long.
EE torrid three quarter zip with hoodie. Around 6 ounces, works when wet and matched with the pants and booties makes a fantastic option for using a lighter quilt and when cold just wear it all to bed. All for less than a pound.
I own the Decathalon Trek in both down and synthetic. I took the down version on my AT thru hike and it worked great but I wish I would have had the synthetic one instead. In the Smokies we got hit with a bunch of snow and temps in the 20s. The best way to dry the sweat from your clothes when you stop at the end of the day is to keep them on and put dry layers on outside. I did notice a difference in the insulation properties of the down jacket as my undergarmets started to dry and the vapor passed through the jacket. A synthetic jacket would have solved this issue. They synthetic version is only a couple of ounces heavier and about half of the price. As far as warmth goes, it works as well as the down version. You'd be surprised how many people on the AT had Decathalon gear. It's definately more popular in certain circles.
The decathlon synthetic jacket is awesome. Down is great but any moisture and it’s rendered useless. I would use synthetic over down anyday for a jacket. Sleeping bag, down all night long
My favorite synthetic puffy of all time has been the Mountain Hardwear Compressor Hooded. I've had a few of the different variants over the years and I absolutely love it.
Picked up the Montbell Plasma jacket in Tokyo at a Montbell store (which was such a blast) for $275 - list cheaper in Japan and the exchange rate is so favorable…. It is soooo warm for the weight
Dan, love coming to you for insight on gear. Do you have a video talking about trekking poles? If so can you send me a link to the video. I have a pair of Leki Khumbu Lite poles and I’m overall very happy with them, I’ve just been curious what the difference is between affordable poles and very expensive poles. Thanks!
I love the Eddie stuff too..Work on a fishing boat and I live in the hooded lite puffy jacket and the insulated stretch pants in the winter. Merry Christmas
I hiked the PCT with the Decathlon Trek 100. Great puffy. But, I couldn't get it out of my mind that I was a man wearing a women's jacket. The tag said men's, but the zipper was on the wrong side & the chest had a bit extra room. Otherwise, it was light & warm.... And it lasted through the long hike without any problems.
You didn't get a woman's jacket I have the same issue and what I found out is they are manufactured in France and that's the way they do it there. They're more of a European company but becoming popular in the United States. I got used to it real quickly and anybody who wants to say oh you're wearing a woman's jacket I'll say no it's a French jacket you idiot and mine cost $300 less than yours.
Keep in mind many winter jackets have a little extra room in the chest and slim down towards the waist to accommodate for scarves and vests. Many of my jackets except for an Oakley I have are cut somewhat roomier in the chest and it makes sense when you layer and add the scarf.
Greatest all-purpose adventure jacket ever-own 2 (lost a 3rd). I use it as a layer beneath a full down parka if in arctic conditions, but rarely take it off.
I saw an older review back in 2023 on the Decathlon Trek 100 I bought it after watching your video. I put it to the test in November 2023 for a trek in Nepal. I did the Annapurna circuit and did the Thorong La Pass. The pass was very cold it was during the shoulder season of fall/winter so the temperature was not below freezing yet but the wind chill made it feel like it was. Actual temperature during the day in the Pass was around 25 - 28 Degree F. I wore a wind/rain proof outer shell with the decathlon jacket underneath along with a fleece and many layers and it did pretty well on the Thorong La Pass. As long as I moved around I kept warm it was still cold but manageable. Once I sat still to rest my feet I felt the freezing wind chill and that wind hit my face and I felt it. We didn't stay in the pass for to long once we took our pictures and drank some tea in the cabin we headed down the mountain and started warming up our body again. If there wasn't any freezing wind in Thorong la pass I believe the Decathlon jacket would have handled the cold temps fine. Overall it's a great down jacket for the price.
Also worth a serious consideration is the Atom SL. Excellent for shoulder seasons and thin enough to be worn under a down/hard shell in colder weather.
Hands up to Cumulus. I looove that brand. I've got their Inverse down jacket as well as 2 sleeping bags, I wouldn't change for anything. Great loft (900cuin), hydrophobic option, sleeping bags are customisable (down quantity and distribution), length, zippers size and length for UL options, zipper side (for left handed..), choice of fabric.. I love them 😍
They have become kinda expencive. My go to brand nowadays is rab. They are less expencive ecpecially because they use hydrophobic down in all theyer products.
@@radosawskrzypczak5977 it's very difficult to say, it depends on so many parameters such as when you're using it/for what activities, how you are dressed under... I've used it in summer above 2500m altitude in t-shirt, it's too warm, but I'm not a chilly person. I'd say it's good for mountaineering in mid season, in static position (when belaying or at camp) with a good layer underneath around -5 to 10°C. Above 10 I would find it too much.
The Decathlon version you are showing is (in Europe) about 60 euros. There is a 90 euros version that is even warmer. This one (MT100) is for -5C and the other one (MT500) is suitable up to -10C. Decathlon also has some pretty good merino wool base layers that are way cheaper than the brand versions. I have worked at Decathlon for a few months a long time ago, and we were explained that all of the gear is not just tested in a factory, but at the location where it will be used, in factory locations all over France. So the swimwear is made at the location that is near the beach, the ski clothing near the alps, etc.
My 4-season down jacket is the Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) Feather Pack hooded jacket. It’s not ultralight at about 15oz, but with 5oz of 800-fill hydrophobic goose down and costing under $200 it’s hard to beat. Temps in the 30s aren’t uncommon in the summer here and it’s perfect for staying warm before bed or after getting up. I’ve also hiked in it in subzero temps. My winter-only jacket is a Marmot Greenland Baffled Down Jacket, I have no idea of fill weight but I was warm setting off fireworks at -20F with just a light fleece under it.
@@alexbillian2846 I really like mine, in winter I generally use it during rest stops and while hiking in subzero temps. The rest of the year I bring it for warmth in camp at night and to stay warm in the mid-upper 30s in my 45F sleeping bag.
In Japan, the montbell plasma 1000 costs 28000 yen (with tax), which is around USD 190. In the US, it costs USD 479. Lots of people buy Montbell when travelling to Japan.
I have the the exact navy decathlon forclaz jacket and it is an incredible jacket. Its is warm, light and wellmade. It has a great fit as well. Also bought the vest version which is awesome as well. Great recommendation.
I would have liked to see the Enlightened Equipment Apex jacket on the list. I've had one for a while now. I stopped using almost anything else. It's an awesome jacket
I own the Decathlon and the EE Torrid. I highly recommend both. Both are under $200. The Torrid is stupid light, is warm when moist, customizable, and MADE IN THE USA!
I found a Helly Hanson Odin on clearance when I was looking for a jacket to play disc golf in so it had to be thin, light, warm, and 'cheap'. I didn't know how much I'd love it until I took it out. It's my favorite jacket and I look for excuses to wear it.
I just purchased the Montbell Plasma 1000 without the hood and less down for under 270.00 from Montbell. It was on sale. It’s not the same as the one you showed but is weighs about 4.9 ounces. It is replacing my Patagonia jacket because it’s much lighter. If I was going synthetic I would get the Enlightened Equipment jacket. It cost about the same was that OV jacket and it’s made in the USA. Other jackets to consider would be anything from Western Mountaineering or Zpacks. Expensive, but top of the line. I only went with the Montbell because it’s just so light. They run very small. Nice review of jacket’s.
@@HostileTakeover2 I do like the Plasma jacket, mainly because its super lightweight and warm. I think Montbell products run a bit small. I also purchased a vest from them, and I went with a large, when I actually wear a medium. I am only 5.8 and about 158 so far from large. I also have their down pants and those seem to be sized better. The only thing I don't love is there are no real pockets. I knew this going in. When I purchased the vest, I did not get their Plasma model, I got the Alpine Light model, it has pockets, and the outer fabric is a bit heavier duty. They often have products on sale on their site and that is when I purchased mine. You just need to be patient. Take care
Have you ever tried La Sportiva apparel? I’ve used their jackets for years (well I worked for them for 4 years) and they are the boooomb… they are developed for skimountaineering. Light and very warm
I can also recomend the rab microlight alpine very warm small packsize good fit but loses a Bit of Feather but all in all of you but in Sale Great jacket
I recently got a mountain equipment company (MEC In Canada) it is a copy of the Ghost whisperer but half the price. Tested skiing and as a mid layer is good to about -16c with just a Merino base layer underneath. Yes it works as jacket to put on for breaks or in camp as well but the flexibility of this weight down jackets makes them a really good buy. Ps these are box wall construction not stitched through which make a big difference
That Decathlon link didn't work for me... but thanks for that option, I just ordered a few things from them! Just getting back into backpacking and need to ease into the big purchases...
I've just got the Decathlon jacket but I'm puzzled why, on the lefthand pocket, there are two pullers on the zip - one on the inside the one on the outside? It's as though they've made it so a mouse trapped in the pocket could undo the zip!! EDIT I've just realised, having watched another review video, it's for use when you store the jacket in its own pocket!!!
I like the Montbell plasma 1000 but the largest size is XL. So I’ll stick with my Enlightened equipment and outdoor Vitals coats and gear. They go up to 3XL. So I can layer under them while still maintaining my mobility.
what size did you pick for the Novapro? do you think it fits large or small? How tall are you and how much do you weigh? (sorry for all the intrusive questions!)
I would be interested what is your take on Canada Goose jackets? They are expensive and not that transparent - no information on fill weight... but as said, interested what you think of them. Thanks!
Enjoy your channel Dan My first port of call on cold days is the Mountain Equipment Lightline, on chilly, camping days i use the Rab Alpine Microlight. Had a few of these over the years, I also use the Mountain Equipment Annapuna jacket, used it as a sleeping bag too
Hey Dan! A lot of reviews talk about the sizing on the Decathalon Jacket being a little odd. Did you need to size up like some people say? I've been reluctant to order for that reason. Thanks!
@@mattmcgill9934 is it a body and sleeve length issue or torso space issue? I’m 6’4 and 185, so tall and athletic, on the slimmer side. Generally, large is perfect but I’ve considered an XL based on reviews.
@@mattmcgill9934 Wondering the same as Galin. Which dimension is the problem in? I'm 5'11", but only 143lbs. So I'll probably need the large if it's the length that's at issue, but I might be better off with the medium if it's the chest diameter...
Broke down and just ordered the Plasma 1000. Buying directly from Montbell Japan is cheaper. Free shipping and came in at $374 CAD so $277 USD. I will get hit with duty but still significantly cheaper.
You'll likely decide to give it away to a Salvation Army Thrift Store the day after you get it. Hold it up to a bright sky, you can see right through it.

They aren’t sponsoring him. I love Dan but he’s basically a commercial.
@@captyonah1378
He’s basically the Sham Wow guy of backpacking.
@@captyonah1378 You know it.
Huge fail not including the Torrid.
I'm thinking about Inverse as well. How is your experience with its warmth, what temperature range do you think is comfortable with it?
@@radosawskrzypczak5977 it's very difficult to say, it depends on so many parameters such as when you're using it/for what activities, how you are dressed under...
I've used it in summer above 2500m altitude in t-shirt, it's too warm, but I'm not a chilly person.
I'd say it's good for mountaineering in mid season, in static position (when belaying or at camp) with a good layer underneath around -5 to 10°C. Above 10 I would find it too much.
Hi Dan, what's your opinion on the RAB Mythic Alpine Down Jacket? It seems to tick every box but I can't find much buzz around it...
Same here 🤔
The Decathlon version you are showing is (in Europe) about 60 euros.
Haglofs lim Essens for me, weird name but has 70g of fill in a 170g jacket, this brand doesn’t get enough love.
My winter-only jacket is a Marmot Greenland Baffled Down Jacket, I have no idea of fill weight but I was warm setting off fireworks at -20F with just a light fleece under it.
you would say the feather pack could be a good winter hiking piece?
@@alexbillian2846 I really like mine, in winter I generally use it during rest stops and while hiking in subzero temps. The rest of the year I bring it for warmth in camp at night and to stay warm in the mid-upper 30s in my 45F sleeping bag.
In Japan, the montbell plasma 1000 costs 28000 yen (with tax), which is around USD 190. In the US, it costs USD 479. Lots of people buy Montbell when travelling to Japan.
5:56 - the Atom LT doesn't come with a pouch (I know, I have one)...so how did you pack it?
You should try out the feathered friends Eos jacket if you get the chance. That's been my go to for a while now but they can be little hard to find.
I got that Decathlon jacket for my wife. I personally own the 0 degree down jacket they sell and it's awesome. Big fan of Decathlon stuff.
And affordable
@@deekelley891 Very!
I awesome it’s made in China by some 12 year olds chained to the sawing machine.
@@mtadams2009 - I'm sure you'll be happy to know said 12-year-olds had nothing to do with the sawing of this coat since it's not made of wood.
@@SkitterComic That’s funny, my bad.
EE is a great company and absolutely a great jacket. And made in MN. You betcha.
I own the Decathlon and the EE Torrid. I highly recommend both. Both are under $200. The Torrid is stupid light, is warm when moist, customizable, and MADE IN THE USA!
Rab Alpine. Great with a merino wool undershirt. Good down to about freezing when twinned with hat and d decent gloves.
I found a Helly Hanson Odin on clearance when I was looking for a jacket to play disc golf in so it had to be thin, light, warm, and 'cheap'. I didn't know how much I'd love it until I took it out. It's my favorite jacket and I look for excuses to wear it.
Have you ever looked at a Columbia Omni heat? I am looking for some new gear curious to see how the Omni heat technology stacks up against down??🤔🤔😎😎
I just purchased the Montbell Plasma 1000 without the hood and less down for under 270.00 from Montbell.
Now that you've had the Montbell Plasma for a year, what do you think?
Is it true that the OV Varrio is better if you're actively hiking because you can actually sweat in it without causing the down to wet out?
100% agree with your #1 choice. The Decathlon down range is outstanding (including the summit version).
Dan, are you absolutely sure the Rab jacket is the Neutrino Pro?
I bought the decathlon Forclaz on your recommendation and could not be happier. Great jacket for the money!
That Decathlon link didn't work for me... but thanks for that option, I just ordered a few things from them! Just getting back into backpacking and need to ease into the big purchases...
Montbell makes some amazing stuff I’ve got the rain trekker jacket and I like it more than the outdoor research helium
Love my Decathlon jacket. Strong suggestion: go one size up. Wear a large? Get the XL instead.
Don't forget the Patagonia Das Hoody Light sooooo good
I've just got the Decathlon jacket but I'm puzzled why, on the lefthand pocket, there are two pullers on the zip - one on the inside the one on the outside? It's as though they've made it so a mouse trapped in the pocket could undo the zip!! EDIT I've just realised, having watched another review video, it's for use when you store the jacket in its own pocket!!!
I like the Montbell plasma 1000 but the largest size is XL. So I’ll stick with my Enlightened equipment and outdoor Vitals coats and gear. They go up to 3XL. So I can layer under them while still maintaining my mobility.
Hey Dan,
So what you’re saying is the higher the down number the less warmer it is???
How does the Cumulus inverse compare to the mont bell plasma in term of warmth?
Looks like you've got the Trek 500 linked in the description, not the 100. Just a heads up!
what size did you pick for the Novapro? do you think it fits large or small? How tall are you and how much do you weigh? (sorry for all the intrusive questions!)
I would be interested what is your take on Canada Goose jackets? They are expensive and not that transparent - no information on fill weight... but as said, interested what you think of them. Thanks!

One note on the Decathlon:
-$89 for Navy, Black, and Dark Green
-$60 (yup!) for Blue and Orange!
Hi Dan. Have you tried the Rab Zero G ? 130g of 1,000 FP down. 300grams so UL for that warmth to weight
They have a new jacket called the mythic alpine which is pretty cool too. 140g of 900 fill in a 313g jacket.
@@imahuman1996 yeah I have seen that jacket. It looks great also. So many cool options on the market 👍
Enjoy your channel Dan
My first port of call on cold days is the Mountain Equipment Lightline, on chilly, camping days i use the Rab Alpine Microlight. Had a few of these over the years, I also use the Mountain Equipment Annapuna jacket, used it as a sleeping bag too
What would you recommend for Toronto in February? Cost not an issue
Can you do best mid layers? My husband gets cold so easy and l am trying to get him into winter hiking.
Didn't include REI, North Face, Patagonia, or Outdoor Research in this comparison? Probably the top four selling jackets?
Funny, I’ve been looking for a puffy! Thanks! You totally helped me choose one.❤
How can you not mention the Enlightened Equipment Torrid Apex?? Great synthetic jacket that's been well tested over the last five years
He did not get pay for them.....
Hey Dan! A lot of reviews talk about the sizing on the Decathalon Jacket being a little odd. Did you need to size up like some people say? I've been reluctant to order for that reason. Thanks!
I’m 5’9” 160 lbs. I got the decathlon puffy last year. Got a medium and it works ok but I should have gotten a large.
EU - XL or US - L is what I got. It’s very similar to the ghost whisperer in a large size. I’m 6’2” 200lbs
@@NicoBurns it’s the chest that is tight. The arms and waist length are perfect
Glad I found this video! I've been looking for a puffy jacket with pit zips. I was starting to think they didn't exist.
Hello friend, what is the price of the phantom alpine down jacket?
Broke down and just ordered the Plasma 1000. Buying directly from Montbell Japan is cheaper.
Free shipping and came in at $374 CAD so $277 USD. I will get hit with duty but still significantly cheaper.
Was $323 USD with duty included. Awesome jacket.
The decathlon costs 49$ (tax included) in Italy and I agree it’s a Best Buy. I have in all versions and nearly all colors and it’s awesome
Army M65 liner is my go to. CHEAP and built like a tank. Great under frog tog if you need H2O protection.
Dan, Can you do a review of the Sitka Ambient Jacket⁉️
Ordered the Decathlon for $60!! I hope it lives up to the expectations and is warm
You'll likely decide to give it away to a Salvation Army Thrift Store the day after you get it. Hold it up to a bright sky, you can see right through it.
Does the plasma 1000 hold up to carrying a 30 pound pack?
Are you wearing the Apple Watch Ultra? If so, have you used it on trail? And how does it compare to other watches?
But then again…there’s the Moncler Maya. $$$$ incredible warmth!
How would you rate the north face thermoball jacket and the lululemon navigation down jacket?
Is the RAB microlight warmer than the Ghost Whisperer ? Thanks
How about the Sam's club special Eddie Bauer EB650 jacket for $34?
What is the hoodie top you are wearing?
Who knew that Jim from the office knew so much about winter jackets.
Thanks and then interesting review Forclaz do the MT 900 a 570 g hot jacket
When you giving the weights, I’m guessing you’re talking about Usa as opposed to imperial they’re different different so it’s a bit difficult for us to know how much you’re talking about and how much it actually weighs be great. Have a reference in grams or kilos so everyone understands what it is.
For real i was window shopping for warm puffers, went to WalMart's site, saw they had one for like 59. Then i checked out youtube and came to Dan's site . . . after the video, I noticed what i saw on WalMart and Dan's vid was THE SAME PUFFER - the Decathlon Forclaz Trek 100. I gotta check it out!
I bought the Decathlon and Ghost Whisperer 2. No competition between the 2. However, I will say as a 'value' jacket the Decathlon is pretty good.
