- I used various Topaz programs to upscale skyboxes from Half-Life 1 and CS 1.6, bringing them from 256x256 to 1024x1024 resolution. Why? The excuse this time is to celebrate me approaching my one million subscriber goal.

If doesn't work use hlae and mirv commands. There is a tutorial on yt

@@yowaifps just download a csgo cheat and test it in -insecure. most cheats have skybox changer, even skyboxes that arent present in the game.

When I was a kid I dreamed about exploring the Half-life 1 Skybox. I went really far and found a little house on the other side of the mountain. I felt like I've found a Easter Egg that no one would ever found. To this day, my brain looks at that mountain and imagine that there's a house just laying there. With no one to find it.

I know right? I used to play CS 1.6 with no bots and just explore the maps and the skybox, I used to spend a lot of time in one map that was set in a skyscraper (which had a telescope with a funny easter egg) and now it feels very nostalgic.
Man you should break out the hammer editor and make that house on the mountain!

We handle anticlockwise rotation better than clockwise, or so I've heard, however this is clockwise rotation not counter clockwise.

Since I started playing FPS games, I was in love with the skyboxes. It wasnt the map itself that sparked my curiosity and awe, but just looking at the sky and those far hills, forest or cities. Unreal and CS Sourse were the first games that I truly wanted to fly outside the map limits.
It's actually insane how this upscaling already looks dated compared to what we have now, cool but kinda scary

I think it's interesting for a video like this where when you're watching it you arent necessarily aware of the change in topic at the end, since it seems like a natural progression of a thought, but having the timestamps there highlights all of the extra effort it takes to have another chapter or paragraph to the video

i watched nearly all of it - usually i don't care that much to comment about some flaws. it was bit unconfortable as expected from spinning, but during forest scene i had to legit look away to not get motion sickness, so i thought to point it out for others, cause motion sickness can be a bitch sometimes

Dawn skybox was missing, it was meant to be in the game but it can be found in the Half-Life SDK files (Half-Life Day One). I'd love to see that skybox upscaled, it has a purple/pink theme into it with mountains and cloudy weather. Great vid Philip. 👍.
Hey I was curious to know if maybe you could make a video where you upscale the textures of a bunch of old games ( like half life 1 except the whole game) and more. I think it would be very interesting to see the results. Great video Phillip hope you do more upscaling vids in the future

You have mentioned upscaling settings like "clear line priority" and whatnot a few times. Could you perhaps show in some future video what the different settings do and such? I know you showed a bit of the software, but not any details as far as I'm aware.

If I'm remembering correctly, the Doom1 skybox was used in Aztec and was lifted from the first level of the first Doom game's skybox. Kind of neat.

What this person is trying to say is that dayik is one of the accounts that can use some weird workaround ato get into your account when you do any interaction with it (liking, commenting, checkng their profile, etc...)
the music 3klik uses in his videos always gives me the same urge to explore things that are not meant to explored and also makes me want to go back to CS:GO SDK and create something cool :D
0:56 Ooooh Philip, now you're in MY realm. Are you using OIDN? I'm using and abusing it on Blender for my renders, and I love it! There are still some quirks (it can sometimes excessively smooth sharp reflections), but it IS next-level compared to what we had before!

These skyboxes from the 1.6 era has always intrigued me. They're fascinating, and I've always wondered what sort of software did the creators use to create these. I've been always told that it's terragen, but I've like to get the actual answer than the speculation.
I would love to see a remake of this video but with current generative tools. Cubemaps can also be turned into equilateral panoramas so seams don't become a problem.
Certain skyboxes from Deus Ex 1 (gloomy, foreboding atmosphere), Halo 1's ring skybox, and some from other games give me a strong feeling of exploration with lots of depth, and wanting to be there (I enjoy clouds in skies with lots of depth, even if the sky is gloomy). It's a delicate balance to get the right atmosphere.

Skyboxes seem like the perfect thing to upscale and put into play. You're never going to focus on them when playing, but the sharper image is definitely an upgrade that you might take notice of and appreciate when you're messing about.

After 10 minutes of spinning skyboxes, You spin my head right round right round..
For the last Map Labs competition, I used a skybox from a quake custom skybox website that's actually down (web archive yay)
And then used bigjpg (which isn't as good as your upscaler) and used it in my map :D
