    A thing many people miss is Polythemus is actually a young cyclops. So Odysseus basically broke into a kid's house, killed his pet, gave him drugged alcohol that made him pass out, blinded him. Stole the rest of his pet's/farm animals. And then he left while mocking him.

      To be fair, he didn’t know a cyclops lived there and tried to diffuse the situation when Polyphemus showed up (especially in this version). He had to come up with many plans on the spot to protect his men from a being who was going to EAT them!

    I find it really interesting that this song is the first time Odysseus’ name is actually given in the whole musical. He’s been addressed as “Captain” or “my friend” by his men, turns the question back around at Athena, and gives the “Nobody” name initially with Polyphemus. I haven’t quite figured out why that is but in a script that’s been so good about weaving other names in for the audience I feel like it has to be significant to have put his off so long until this particular moment.

    • @smalltrashman4227
      @smalltrashman4227 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +40

      Its necause in Greek mythology names hold power, and so he didn't typically reveal his name to anyone up until Polites' death which softened his tough heart. The soldiers just call him captain because that's the correct honorific. Great observation!

  • @DarkestNova556
    @DarkestNova556 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +140

    I think an interesting thing about gods like Athena is that it’s easy to question her motives, but at the end of the day there’s no one who knows how to handle survival better than a warrior god themselves.

  • @niffleraku
    @niffleraku 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

    12:53 fun fact in the original myths Odysseus reveals his name as he's leaving in an act of arrogance, like "Hah i beat you so now know the name of the man who bested you". But for Epic, he says it as an act of mercy & warning to not trample on anyone else (literally and figuratively) ever again. In either versions this act bites him in the ass later on, and you could argue that this moment is the largest cause of him to not be able to go home for another 10 years. In the original it was meant to be a warning against succumbing to hubris, he was so smart up until this point that if he just didn't become too prideful of his brilliance he would've probably gone home and already seen his family within at least a year or so. But granted it was a rather weird out of character moment in terms of writing so him doing it out of mercy fits better with his character development within the musical version

(I already know the whole of the Act 1 I am watching for the sake of the recognition Jorge gets, but damn, I was not waiting to be this giggly wiggly and wheeze to a song that has people D I E- in it. )

  • @PhoenixCharger

    SO, in the original odyssey, Odysseus doesn't actually say nobody, he says a name meaning no one. But in actual meaning it barely makes a difference. But the other cyclops can see he's hurt, so when he says "nobody" they think it was a punishment from the gods, so he needed to beg for forgiveness.

  • @mirross4890
    @mirross4890 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +144

    Don’t forget, Odysseus introduced himself as “Nobody” to the cyclop. Then at the end he got over confident and shared him name which is a no no. That’s why you see the cyclops smiling at the end. Also remember the line “I am your darkest moment” it comes up later and is very cool how many layers Jorge has in these songs.

    So they do mention it in the song, I think it's wild that people blame Odysseus for not killing polyphemus, it was dumb that he doxed himself to the Cyclops but despite what Athena says, it's clear that Mercy was the only option, his body was literally blocking the door so if they had killed him there was no way they could freaking move it (I just think it's wild that Athena got mad at him for not killing the Cyclops, a literal human knows better than you that the door is blocked by his body, but you get mad at him for not taking a life, if you have to get mad at him for something get mad at him for giving out his name and his home address, If you're going to tell him to kill the Cyclops give him another way to do it, and that you have a way that the body can be moved,as it Stands there is no sensible reason that he should have killed the Cyclops, as far as he knows it would have just resulted in their deaths anyway)

    If people are really THAT bad at the whole thing of "giving """"hints"""" about what's to come" = spoilers, you're giving spoilers, what's wrong with you, AT LEAST have the decency to do 6 of 7 lines with nothing but a dot first so your spoilers are avoidable. Common courtesy, imagine how bummed you'd have been if someone told you what will happen, no matter how roundabout they thought they were being about it.

  • @miche9611
    @miche9611 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    10:14 In my view, Athena's order is very dumb. How should they kill the giant monster that resisted their previous assaults? The cyclops is blind, ok, but coming sufficiently close to slit its throat or spear its heart is a huge risk. The monster would surely grab some men and squeeze them in its hands before someone else would be able to finish the job. And this only if the move would be made by all the remaining warriors. Alone, Odysseus would have no chances. Thus, a real "warrior of the mind" would have left the cyclops crying without knowing who caused its afflictions thanks to the "Nobody" trick. And the Goddess of War and Wisdom would have avoided to provide silly suggestions.
    It is not a surprise that none of that was told in the Odyssey.
    Anyway, that's not comparable to the incredibly stupid thing that Odysseus said in 12:30 , which is almost the same he said in the Odyssey. Basically, he dissipated the advantages he gained by saying his name was "Nobody". Now Polyphemus will tell his family and friends who caused its afflictions. Vengeance would surely follow, and now, with the help of Odysseus himself, they know where to strike.
    In the Odyssey, Odysseus said that because he thought to be the smarter one and thus he wanted to mock the blind monster while going away. In the musical, he said that because he wanted to teach mercifulness to a giant monster that killed his best friend and several other men of his crew. And to spite Athena, of course... I understand that this version of Odysseus wants to embrace the "open arms" philosophy of his dead friend, but stating his name and his country of origin was unnecessary for that scope and a very dumb move instead.
