But a lot of people are telling me that the Broadway version of this song is just on a whole other level, so naturally I have to check it out. Sam Pauly has even said she's ok when people don't clap at the end since it means the song got to them.
Saw the UK tour and that's the only time I've seen polite, uncomfortable clapping be the result of a performance being very effective.
I agree no claps needed for this song because of the nature of the song but you also really can't just not clap for that kind of performance. I mean specifically for Sam's version I mean the acting choices, the singing technique, it's so good it's hard not to clap. but yeah, this song starts out fun but then when you see the realization in her face as the song progresses it will really break your heart into pieces.

I saw this in the US tour. After this song, the audience was silent for several moments as everyone just sat there in shock. It was absolutely silent. Then, a slow clap started and the audience burst into the loudest applause of the whole musical. It was one of the most insane moments of my time watching musical theater
I just saw them in Vegas and the audience didn't start clapping until after the lights came back up.
I’ve always thought the line “playtimes over” is so haunting and reminds people that she was a CHILD

I love this song and hate it at the same time. It's one of the best songs in the entire musical but it is so soul crushing when you think about all the shit Katherine went through in her life and how young she died. She never got to life a life outside of being used and abused.
right?! i got hooked because i found the melody beat and vocal performance of this amazing but I didn't exactly knew all of the lyrics and when I actually paid attention to the lyrics....oh jeez it actually made me a little nauseous.
As someone who was sexually abused a lot as a child I see myself in Katherine. It made me cry cause I always jsut brush it off but it hurts.

After repeatedly listening I actually find the saddest part to be in the beginning. "Ever since I was a child I'd make the boys go wild" As if she was responsible for the actions of these "boys?" (aka grown men)...
What I loved about "All You Wanna Do" is how the actress starts out the song so happy and in love. She skillfully takes the song from that to being bitter, disillusioned, and in terrible pain. The raw pain she sings about in the end is gutwrenching.
That’s Samantha for you. Every performance I’ve seen by others of this song are great, and each have their own unique way of expressing the tragedy of Howard… but Sam absolutely mastered the song. How she goes from playful, through frustrated, to anger and pain all while keeping her singing to match those emotions is absolutely phenomenal. I’m so glad she got the call and accepted the role (did you know she almost gave up on her dream of performing on broadway? This role was her breakthrough, and I’m so glad she didn’t give up!)

It's sounds very young and innocent the way she described it and it's genius (sad, but genius), for its a reminder of how young she was when men began taking advantage of her...

There is a key element that kind of goes unnoticed until someone pointed it out. Based on the studio album Kay Howard’s song has more background vocals on the chorus; but on stage they stripped them down to where the background vocals only say “play times over”. By doing this it not only made her story more tragic it in a way it represented how isolated she actually was while all this abuse was happening to her. The sad part is even some historians still blame her for being excited even though clearly she was being taken advantage of and tossed aside.
Yeah I saw this live 2 weeks ago and it's way different than listening to the album. I was just like "oh damn they went there" also I appreciate Anna of Cleves "Get Down" way more having seen it live I think the US. cast did a great job.

Exactly, and that isolation is exacerbated by the fact that the other queens don't look directly at her for the vast majority of the song. And when they do look at her, it is either with entirely blank expressions, or mild hostility. They made it in a way that those just... aren't the other queens anymore. Those are blank slates representing the isolating and predatory people in her life. It's equal parts brilliant and heartbreaking.
@@yumega I also take it to mean that not only did men take advantage of her, but the women around her were so unsupportive. Agnes Howard literally ignored her step-granddaughter getting molested, Lady Rochford despite being involved with the scandal tried to pin the blame on K Howard, and not to mention the amount of gossip at court spread around by some of the ladies within the court.
I think "Play times over" is also so insidious because she was a child when this all started. It literally stole her childhood, her girlhood from her. She stopped being a child to a large portion of society at such a young age.
Knowing Katherine's age when she died. She was about 17 years old

Poor kid was only 12-13 with Mannox (who was 36) 14 with Derhem (who was around 25), 15-17 when she was forced into marrying the King (who was 49) and 17-19 when she was executed because there were rumours that she was having an affair, even though there was no proof and more of her actions suggested she wanted nothing to do with Culpepper, since she asked her servant to tell him she didn't want to meet with him anymore (they only met up to talk whilst being closely chaperoned by her servant). The only thing they had to convict her on was a vague "love" letter that wasn't even seen as proof at the time and has now been discovered to have been written under duress. What they executed her for in the end was having previous "relationships" and not telling the King about it.

I do have to say tho that she said publicly before being executed, "Today I die the queen, but I would rather have died Culpepper's wife!" Or something along that line. Who knows if that's correct, I have a feeling it was & honestly I think he might've been genuine in his feelings. I hope so. That girl was so failed by her family/guardians. And Henry... Don't even get me started.
@@leaveittoweaver4525 they've found recently that that is a myth, her final speech was actually petty average, she asked them to pray for her, asked that her family would not be punished and that her servants would be given a gift, and that was really it. The poor thing was too scared to say anything else. That speech has been thought to be fact for a while, but I think it's a myth. Either way I still feel bad for her considering her childhood abuse and lack of supervision and any kind of real love. Sorry if that sounded rude, I just thought I'd mention it.
This is why I wish I went "he was 33" instead of 23, I think the changed it to have not so many "th" sounds, but it does minimise the age gap
I find it heartbreaking how she was so intent on always trying to do things right that she asked for the block to be delivered to her cell the night before her execution so she could practice putting her head on it right.

I just re-listened to the studio recording of this song and while Aimee Atkinson does a great job, she seems to focus more on it being a pretty sound rather than putting emotion into the end. Considering that this song is styled after Britney Spears and Ariana Grande, makes sense - hide the pain and make a pretty song. It's easy to miss the message if you only listen to the studio album. Aimee definitely shows more emotion in the West End bootleg I've seen, but Sam Pauly can make me cry with the pain and despair she emotes.
Yeah the studio album is much more of a pop record - Aimee on stage is just as dramatic and heartbreaking as this is !

@@norasshelfdiscovery7883 They did that on purpose didn't they? the same way any concert is slightly different to the recorded version they recorded the songs just as recordings then when they perform them they're slightly different for the sake of the stage and the story, I dont actually like this song from the album but I loved it on stage. it's so cleverly done. imagine being the writers going from the Edinburgh fringe to west end, broadway, ships ... so so good
its even sadder when you realize Katherine was only 19 when she died. she was an adult for literally only a year of her life. she was brutally raped and traumatized her entire life. historians don’t even believe she even had an affair, that it was a rumor that killed her.

From the several versions I have watched and read the comments of (so take this with a grain of salt), apparently the "affair" wasn't even the main reason for being beheaded but her being "damaged goods" because she wasn't a virgin when Henry took her. I forgot his name but the last guy allegedly blackmailed her because he knew about her "impurity" at marriage.

Anne wasn’t married, but she was set to marry another man who she truly loved. Most people believe she actually left court in order to escape Henry when he showed interest in her. Also, there’s no evidence she ever cheated on Henry, she was likely beheaded because she couldn’t give him a son and because she tried to get too involved in politics.

For what I know, the only one she "admitted to love" is Francis, they were gonna get married, but she was still a child and they were stopped. She didn't really wanted any of them, she was raped by all, including Thomas, he forced himself on her. That's the only contact she knew her short life, and to be killed because of it makes me cry every time I think about it, all of them deserved more. I'm so happy someone thought of making a musical about them, so they name can live on, so people can remember them as something more than his wives
The creepy thing was that she was saying she going to get married when she was still a child... Its something predators STILL use today. The "I love you s much, I just had to" thing... Look it up, its a manipulative tactic. What really gets me with this song is how reminiscent the lyrics are of when your a young teen talking with your friends about boys and boyfriends. It actually sounds like we used to and it just adds to the shock value. For me it really adds to the impact of the message.

It does mean they've never had something like that happen to them... but innocence has a limit, and ouch that's gotta hurt once they realize. I find this song and don't loose your head to be rather ironic in some ways. The cheerful music that is reminiscent of my teen years also is a bit... so yeah I love what they did with this musical and love the depth. I really wish I'd been able to see it live.

Sort. They (mainly her great aunt) stopped the wedding because of francis position, not the age. If you were in your teens you could marry, but it was rare.
This whole song puts her story in such a different perspective than I've seen it presented previously. Usually the depictions I see are of her as a promiscuous tease who thought she could get away with having an affair. I cried the first time I saw it and my brain put things together, going from "...oh" to "...OH. OH NO. NO NO."

She was a child, for crying out loud! Like, I don’t care how badly you despise children and their behaviour, you don’t say things like that! Even if it was true, and unless someone invents a Time Machine and go back to find out for sure, we’ll never truly find out, but even then, that’s still flat out abuse! Taking advantage of a child like that, in my book, is the most disgusting act anyone can do.
I went to see SIX two weeks ago, and I cannot believe why I let myself wait so long. Phenomenal experience, tragic, entertaining, heart wrenching, hilarious. It really makes you think and forget about the passing of time, while still being the most entertaining show I have seen for a very long time. The “international sensation” title is well deserved! I cannot recommend seeing the show live enough. If it’s not on your list of things to do, then what are you Eve doing with your life?
All queens had really entertaining songs and were quite enjoyable, while still making you think about what they went through.
Then this song came on. Laughing my ass off during her intro (when she talks about the other queens’ songs). Nice rhythm, great vocals, really got the “K Howard is here and fun’s begun” going.

Wait, hang on… that’s… okay, I guess if we’re being careful, we could say stuff like that…
And as the song went on, the childish descriptions of the things she did and men were doing to her, just got more and more disturbing.
The ending though. Yeah there was still an applause, but I’m convinced it was for the performance, out of respect. Each song got an ovation before, but this time you could really feel something was different. I was in tears. So many emotions, and to think that not only was she abused, but it started when she was a child and never stopped then got the blame by some men who can’t keep their sausage in their pants is just… and how many we don’t even hear about? Even today…

And I do applaud each and every lady who played K Howard, because this is without a doubt the hardest song in the whole play. Then seeing Samantha Pauly perform it? She just takes the song to a whole new level. By far my favourite performance, because not only her voice is perfect, her control is spot on, she really puts the emotions where they should be.

this song is so triggering for a lot of people, including me. i saw some people leave the theatre before the last chorus and come back after. its so sad.
The way the men in the audience kept laughing when she tried to shake the hands off of her. Infuriating. And you can tell the women were silent for a reason. Edit: You can't really tell in this video. In other bootlegs, you can clearly hear several men outwardly laugh when she shakes off the hands/ when she's breaking down. It's painful to watch and infuriating to think about.

I know, I heard it when I watched a different version. Like how could you find that funny when it was- or should be- so obvious what the song was about, and what that move specifically symbolized. Pissed me off.
What you take away from this number is based on who is performing. Some “katherines” play her as youthful and naive, others play her like this - stuck, tormented, abused, and defeated. Based on which direction the singer chooses it gives a very different tone.
Even the young, naive ones hit hard imo.

Sam imo gives both directions, she starts off as young and naïve and then shows her as what she was abused and then defeated in the end
@@sylvia7777 I should have added “only” naive and young and flirtatious. Sam is my favorite to watch preform this even if she is not my favorite vocalist to sing the song. She does a brilliant job of visibly showing the turn from youth and being naive to very much abused and desperate and unable to change anything about her fate and situation
I think it depends on the individual actress as to how heartbreaking the song is. I know one of the girls in a UK production has turned the last note into a scream rather than a breath or a sob like the others which really hits hard.

The upbeat song is a shield to hide her agony, she just wanted to be loved.
Howard’s song and performance is what drew me to six in the first place. Incredibly powerful but unfortunately relatable and the idea that I have more time that Katherine and I get to heal is the most motivating thing I could ever hope to experience

Katherine Howard is my favorite Queen, and she easily has the saddest song in the show (if we're comparing) yet it sounds the most upbeat. I get chills every time I hear Sam's (this) rendition of it

American cast of Six was pretty awesome! Both UK & US did a great job, but the Broadway version of Get Down just rocks! It's my favorite number!
This (Samantha Pauly's) version of this song remains to be my favorite. Out of all the versions I've listened to, hers is the most impactful. At least for me.
Her's was the saddest story, Anna of Cleve's was the best, and honestly, I like Anne Boleyn mainly because out of everything that happened her daughter still became the reigning monarch and is one of the most recognized names in royal history.
I've always thought Katherine Howard wins. Yes, the other queens had it rough, there's no denying that, but a sexually abused child who didn't even live to see her 20s? That wins worst life, hands down.

Honestly. I think hers is the sadest too, at least according to the musical. It's just so depressing how used she was. Also, you may realize how with the 4th queen, she pushes off their hands off and they stay off. For her, they keep coming back and get more invasive. So sad. 😥
the emotional shift in this version is subtle at first, but you can see a slight change in the way sam pauly sings certain lines. then it hits you like a mac truck.

I think it's really impactful how K Howard is partially styled after Britney Spears. Both of them were overly-sexualized from a young age and originally rewarded for being fun and sexy but later punished for it. Both had their lives steered by men trying to profit off of them and control them. Both were brought down by vicious rumors. I'm glad Britney at least was able to regain control of her own story.
This version seems pretty much the same as the version I’ve seen in the U.K. very powerful portrayal of the abused young woman / child she was.
In the begging everything is laughs and fun, but suddenly in the end is like "oh fuck".
I got to go see SIX last night with a friend. It was amazing. Katherine Howard's song is so sad. I actually hope they re-record the album version because the stage version really gets the reality of her character across.
The hands in the choreo always gets me.
One of my favorite things about sex is every version and every actor plays the character so different and so amazing. Sam pauly is so talented and makes me cry every time as someone who is a sexual assault survivor I relate so much and it truely show cases those emotions amazingly. This whole show is about not comparing women but personally the broadway cast is my favorite and I absolutely adore and find different things to love every time and no matter my emotions or day I can always relate to at least one character and omg heart of stone hit me like a ton of bricks last time

I was fortunate to see Six in Chicago in it’s pre-Broadway run in 2019. So fortunate. I would see it over and over again. And I agree - Kay Howard’s performance changes the tone of the song compared to the soundtrack.
Katherine Howard made me so sad. I agree her and Anne Bolin were the saddest to me as they know they had no choice behind these things and had such similar things end up happening to them. Katherine hurts a bit more for me just because she had her whole childhood stolen away from her by these men who just used her and the ending doesn’t let you feel any comfort or joy in the upbeat song you can clearly see the discomfort and pain grow and it’s so powerful

To all the people who criticize K Howard for acting like a child, it’s because SHE WAS A CHILD! She was 17, and had been used since she was 13, she was a traumatized child.
I think it's interesting how the audience chuckles during "playtime's over"; like K Howard is almost "owning" her sexuality in the first few choruses, but then you can see the active damage it does when she starts the "it's never EVER different" and realize how much she's suffering. Sam's performance really shows that what she experienced was multiple assaults and grooming, and just how tragic her situation really is up until that point. The worst thing is this still happens today.
This whole song is her realizing “oh shit I was being abused.”
This song does such a great job of raising your spirits, getting you to laugh at parts of it....and then feeling so deeply uncomfortable that you found any enjoyment in it
As a theatre kid, I think the reason you see and feel the emotions better on broadway is because broadway is extremely exaggerated. Theatre in general is exaggerated, but broadway is the biggest, the most dramatic, and told course the highest level of theatre.

i watched this cast live and when this song ended, non of the audience even clapped because we were all shocked, she put on such an amazing performance that we were just speechless at the end

The part where she starts flinching gets to me so much
when she got emotional and screamed was so shocking and when i realized the actress was crying i was sure she reasonated with this song and the character which was so emotional and waters the eyes
I remember the first time I watched Sam's version of this, my throat just started to turn dry, like it became so heartwrenching to see the transformation of K Howard in just a few years. Her version is tremendous and unmatched
This one always hits hard because it reminds me of a historical fact that doesn't make it into the show but is so freaking devastating and sums up Katherine Howard so well - when she was informed she would be executed the next day, she requested the block be brought to her room so that she could practicing kneeling and placing her head on it so she didn't trip or look foolish the next day. That kills me every time, to think about spending your last night knowing you were going to be beheaded in a few hours, practicing so it went ok. And knowing how scary it must have been knowing she didn't have the benefit of a swordsman from Calais, as Anne Boleyn did. The axe could be an absolutely brutal way to die (see Countess Margaret Pole and much later Mary, Queen of Scots), though she was lucky it was fast. And there were few witnesses and no records of her last words. So alone and forgotten. Abused by men all her life and neglected by the people who should have been caring her for her, then shoved into a marriage that should not have existed. Just devastating.
I once read, don't know if it's historically accurate,but Henry had an amateur behead her and he did a bad job. So she was in extreme pain and he had to chop it again. If that's true, that's even sadder

There is one major element in "All You Wanna Do" that a lot of people gloss over. And it makes the song 1,000x more disturbing.

In my criminal psych class, one of the things we learned is that one of the "symptoms" of a child experiencing sexual assault was the child acting aggressively sexual or using strong sexual play/language. Basically, the abused child is groomed into thinking their abuse is "normal" so they act like how the perpetrators want them to behave.
Now, look at "All You Wanna Do." The beat makes you feel like you're in a club, and the lyrics contain multiple sexual innuendos and references. And remember how Howard was only 13 when her story started..... yeah.
While it has such a catchy beat, this is one of the saddest and most relatable songs I have ever heard.
I found it so heart wrenching when she sang about basically being groomed and tossed aside over and over, especially as she got near the end and got more reluctant to tell her stories and then breaking at 'when it's never, EVER! Different....'. this song broke me to tears
This song sticks with you long after too... Before the last chorus, that last different I always picture as Katherine screaming rather than singing that last note in a rasp everytime I hear it. As a singer, I can feel the pain behind through every verse, but it slowly creeps up on you until that last different and then you realize just how much pain she was in up until she died...
He literally didn't stop bobbing his head throughout that entire song. Like I'm sitting here getting all teary eyed watching, and then out of the corner of the screen there he is, bobbing away like those little bobble heads. 🤦
I think when people don't clap that's honestly the best possible reaction to the song. That feeling of having that soul-crushing live performance hanging in the air... nothing like it in the world

Sam pauly definitely has a more emotional take on the song. And it's definitely heartbreaking. But the one that gets me every time is Broadway's Catherine Parr I Don't need your Love oh that gets me in my feels all the time
I love not only how much emotion she puts in her voice but also in her dance, near the end she started dancing with less energy and like she felt tired of it and didn’t want to do it because she did it so much already and everything kept repeating with guys
It’s worse knowing that Catherine Howard was likely only 19 when she died in real life

Personally I think the West End portrayal of Anne Boleyn was much more nuanced and sad. The K Howard portrayals are closer but I really do love the Broadway version. I think there are some good shots of the West End version if you want to look.
UPDATE: I just saw the US touring cast (Aragon cast) and HOLY HELL they all blew me away. I knew I was gonna be picky about Boleyn and Howard’s portrayals and they girls both nailed it. Anne had the nuance of bubbly popular slightly ditsy one instead of just the stupid superficial one, which I felt like what I saw of the OBC tended to lean into. And K Howard…oh my god. Chills and tears, which surprised me given how familiar I was with the show. I can’t put into words how good it was. DEFINITELY see this show on tour if it comes your way.
Agreed! The main reason I prefer the West End version is Boleyn. Not that the Broadway performance is bad - the actress does an amazing job - but a lot of nuance got lost across the pond.
As someone who was manipulated and trick by men at age 14 which then led to a spiral of me looking for love in all the wrong places and being used for my body, I cannot listen to this song without crying. It’s such a hard hitting song and I truly feel so bad for Her, she didn’t deserve that terrible fate.
You can tell a lot by how when she sings many of the lines that are pretty much warning that she's being groomed/etc. you can hear men laughing but not many women at all.

Sam Pauly did so well on this song. I feel awful for K. Howard. When I went to see her, after her song, and the applauses, for around a minute or two she just stood sobbing. No one was sure if it was real or not, she just stood sobbing for while. This song always stuck with me.

I think its funny how I never see anyone comment on the "play times over" part of the chorus. She was literally a child. Probably fairly naive/gulible. She was often discribed as "empty headed". I doubt she did anything conniving to get Henry to marry her. She was a pretty girl in the wrong place at the wrong time. And after how things went down with Anne of Cleaves he probably felt he needed to prove his masculinity. So he did the same thing that many middle aged men do, they get a hot young wife to prove they are still virile. And unfortunately Howard was both of those. She also probably had pressure from her family as it sounds like they were only noble by name and property but were poor financially.

Saw the show yesterday with the boelyn tour... No body clapped until the lights went on and even then it was just... No one knew if they should clap or cheer.
I feel like a really good example of how hard Katherines like was is actually in her execution, in comparison to Anne Boleyns execution. Despite both being given the death sentence, Howards experience of that was all the more heartwrenching. First of all, she spent the 24 hours before her execution practicing placing her head onto a chopping block to ensure she looked good while it happened. Secind of all, Henry hired an experienced french swordsman for Boleyns execution, whereas Howards executioner was explicitly given a dull axe, and it took several swings to fully decapitate her. Even in death, Howard was afforded no respect whatsoever by the powerful men who used her, and then for the next several hundred years we went around calling her a seductress rather than acknowledging that she was a literal child

Her story really sounds like it hurts the most. Some, if not most, of them still experienced being spoiled with love, yeah they had a rough life too but it barely compares to how she was abused most of her life.
This song overall is heartbreaking just like her life…. She was like 16/17 when she was beheaded so all of the sex and all that happened when she was just SO SO SO young…. It is so sad 😞
She was actually 19 when she was beheaded. She was 17 when she met Henry and 18 when they married 😊

Re her "terrified" acting at the end, I don't think it was because she knew she was going to die, I think it was because of the men. She flinches away from being touched, which is a sign of sexual abuse, and she doesn't mention the execution at all during the song, so I don't think it had reached that part of the storyline yet. Her trauma at that part was due to the abuse, then after the song finishes, she says "and then I was beheaded, so yeah I win", or words to that affect. The fact so many traumatising things happened to one young girl is heart breaking. I wish I could go back in time and rescue her :(
This is one of my favorite songs from six. I always thought it was pretty if a little boring when I heard it the first few times…then I realized what was actually being sung…she was beheaded after a life of sexual abuse starting in childhood and literally no one helped her; instead she was blamed and the “affairs” were “hidden”. It’s so sad and disgusting.

She did sound defeated, but this felt like every woman who has ever gone along with intimacy because someone said that she was gorgeous and perfect, and then realizes that's all they want from her and they don't care about her, only her body. This song sounds like assault to me, if only from personal experience. Your analysis was great, though, and I hadn't thought of this story from your perspective, so thank you!
I have to be honest, I first heard the West End version and thought it was OK. I saw the Broadway version and was hooked. So looking forward to seeing them live.

as someone who’s seen the west end version not long ago, it was equally heartbreaking to watch, you heard the pain in her voice and the way she reacted to people touching her it was chilling. it’s so intense live. to me there isn’t much of a difference between the american & west end version based on that performance because truly, they were quite similar based on the show i saw in london
I also loved Anne of Cleves song more in the American version! So much more attitude.
