Well, it might be the first repetition of the danger motif, but it first actually appeared in the horse and the infant, during the war scene when everyone is fighting. I cannot wait for you to suffer through the sagas. The epic Animators are like the goddamn flash but an army in releasing these animations. The newest saga came out around 2 weeks ago and there are over 40 something animations on just 3 songs Also this series is amazing not only due to animation but the music tells a story if you listen to so many different points and notes with instrumental and int´struments alone. Jorge our lord Jalapenjo is a goddamn genius
As a note, the reason all the characters look the way they look, is cause most of them (mainly Odysseus, Polites, and Eurylochous) are modeled after their singers. That's why Polites has glasses.
There's two different accounts about who threw Astyanax from the battlements - Pausanius says he was thrown by Neoptolemus (son of Achilles) while "illiou persis" aka "The Sack of Troy" (author unknown) says it was Odysseus who did it. Either way, his fate was debated by the Greek war council, and the threat of him becoming an avenging son was what ultimately led to the infant being thrown. Edit to Add: Interestingly, the two accounts about the death of the son of Hector are only found in those two poems, which were written after Homer's Illiad. Technically that makes those accounts in-Era fanfiction... take that how you will.
You discussing the apple made me think of something. Who would a kid give an apple? His teacher. Athena is his mentor. His teacher. Mircsy, you absolute genius!

Welcome to Epic! Since I haven't seen anyone mention this here is a few things to know: Each character has at least one instrument tied with them, that a special feature we'll come back to later. Whenever a god sings they can summon back up vocalists to sing with them since they are so powerful, however whenever a human character sings whenever there are back up vocals other beings has to be there with them. Edit: Also in Greek society/tradition if you gave someone an apple it means you care for someone deeply. Also re listen to the Lotus Eaters you hear some say "Scary cave".
So here's a detail that's not explained all of Zues' god children like Athena and Ares have time slowing powers, often associated with a ticking clock or metronome.

If memory serves me right
"Odysseus is a much more enjoyable story for me." I thought that too. I still do, but now it's a masochistic enjoyment. Like, Epic has traumatized me, but I love it.
Yeah, the thing to keep in mind with this adaptation is that the original epic written by Homer was in general a cautionary tale about why you don't wanna piss off the gods while the musical is focused less on the gods and more on the crew's perspective of the odyssey.
Also ancient greeks did not have a lot of consideration for morality, while this is all about where the moral lines lie, and what it does to people to cross them
The Lotus Eaters did in fact come before Polyphemus' island. The main difference is that the musical starts with Odysseus' journey instead of with Telemachus, and for obvious reasons cuts off some of Odysseus' encounters (like the Laestrygonians - though they are indirectly mentioned; I'm at the 23:19 mark when writing this, so I don't know if you will reach to that part in this video). There's also a small inside joke about the musical, related to the man who died at Circe's island: he was supposed to be mentioned in the musical and even be one of the main 'characters' there, though he was scrapped out, so the writer also didn't mention his death, you only know about it if you pay attention to how many people died before getting to Circe's island and after. Editing to mention, the characters' design is actually based off the singers' actual looks.
Ever since I found out what the Danger Motif is I CANNOT unhear it in THATI It's now the most obvious part of the song to me. My brain just grabs it and shakes me until I acknowledge it

The glasses are actually in homage to the singer for Polites! Every character is modeled facially after their singer to an extent. Also, in the song Remember Them, the reason Odysseus doesn't want to kill the Cyclops is because of Polites. Polites was his best friend and a very kind and loving individual, which was shown with the song Open Arms about just taking things easy for once and not resorting to violence immediately if there's another way. With his friend dead, Odysseus remembers his lessons of kindness and mercy and is deeply hurt that such a sweet soul had to die because of the rage of a monster when the Cyclops could've just taken the trade. Athena's lessons as a Goddess of Wisdom and War are to never leave things unfinished but Odysseus is blinded by grief and wastes time trying to teach a lesson where there should be none. Athena abandons him who can't follow her teachings anymore, and Odysseus is left fully at the mercy of the God's who show none at all
Funfacts! There is a danger motif played everytime there is danger near, each charchter has there own instrument. Expect one person who just has backing vocals. And the rules of this world are gods can make there own backing vocals, but mortals have ti have others make them. Like when ody speaks the crew backs him up, or polties had tbe lotus eaters. But the gods such as athena dont need it! Also I do request you dont talk about too much about the future just because all of epic hasent been released yet and I havent read the odyssey yet so kinda spoilers lol. Mircsy's design of Polyphemus takes aspects of Poseidon's creations and combines them. A tentacled face like a sea creature, and hooves of a horse. (I commented this before you mentioned it. It went over my head until I read about the reason, so my dumb brain assumed most people wouldn't know.)
The dynamic between polities eurylicaus and ody actually quite remind me of Enders game valentine was too nice Peter to ruthless and Ender in a good middle ground but then leans more towards ruthlessness after an insanely important event but after the hole thing is finished he’s sad and sorrowful for everyth he’s done
Another reactor made a small comment about Odysseus that I think sums up his main flaw. When he was arguing with Athena, he said, "Who do you think you are?? You're just a human." Which sums up Odysseus and many other greek heroes. He doesn't realize that he's just human. He's so prideful and arrogant that he thinks he's on par with, if not better then a god, which he soon realizes with how absolutely fucked over he gets by several different gods/demi gods (Circe) he is not.
Yup. Hubris is a MAJOR theme in a lot of Greek writing. Oddly enough, Odysseus is one of the least offenders (even though it is one of his main flaws). Although here (in Epic), I'd say his bigger issue is running in without a plan and then making one up on the spot.
You don't remember what happens with Astyanax (Prince Hector's Son) in the original story, because it wasn't in the original story. It was written in The Little Iliad and The Sack of Troy, which are post-Homeric Greek stories. It is accepted as part of the broader lore now, but it wasn't written by Homer at all. I don't believe Homer includes Astyanax other that acknowledging his existence.
I’m a music major so I’ve been watching a bunch of vocal coaches take on this. It’s cool to hear somebody who knows the real story and can tell us what the differences are! Please react to more of these!
i loooovee how zeus doesn't mention telemachus at the end of the first song, where the verse at the start mentioned both in the same melodies, because he's trying to convince odysseus to kill someone else's baby boy. the little details in this song keep me awake at night its so good
"They just sent them off to the cave by being nice, and they don't realise it" - No the Lotus Eaters know what they're doing. You can hear one of them going "scary cave" when they first mention the cave. They 100% know what's in that cave
With so many pieces now being made out of mythology, I wonder how different this batch of media would be if Rick Riordan had never written Percy Jackson
Ayyyyy Airier is joining the winion army! You'll love it dude... It is very reminiscent of Peter and The Wolf with how Jorge uses specific instruments to identify certain characters and it is reminiscent of Lin Manuel Miranda's work (Hamilton, Encanto, Etc...) as well with the pacing and sound! It truly is a masterpiece and it isnt even finished yet! Jorge is truly a genius.
My school never made us read The Odyssey so i this was my first time with it and i was so blown away like how has no one made this into a series or an anime?!
don't know if anyone else has commented on this, but in the final seconds of the animatic of The Horse The Infant you see a closed hand opening/releasing something -> referencing that Odysseus dropped the baby from the window
For your own playlist purposes: Please listen to the new versions of the songs in the Cyclops and Troy Sagas! Due to a issue with the publishing company for the first two, Jorge is not getting any money from streams of the original versions. So recently he remade them in person with everyone from the cast.

39:27 This beginning part of the song features a pretty infamous recurring theme in the musical known as 'The Danger Motif'. a lot of people had a hard time trying to find where it was used, but this is the first instance of it
48:04 Not Poseidon (yet). Other cyclopses
Well, it might be the first repetition of the danger motif, but it first actually appeared in the horse and the infant, during the war scene when everyone is fighting.
It’s interesting to me when you listen to it just how many motifs are shared from the first song, like with survives opening verse being the same as the part leading up to the infant if you listen to the melody of Zeus singing.
@@revionbelmont7298 Oh, I never noticed the connection between Survive and The Horse and the Infant, although I have heard that same motif pop up a couple of times after. That's so cool!
@@AquaticDot it's also in Warrior of the Mind during the segment where Odysseus is asking Athena to show herself! That's one I didn't notice until recently so thought I'd share
Epic was split up into sagas (which are essentially just chapters), and so far, the ones that have been released are in order;
The Troy Saga
The Cyclops Saga
The Ocean Saga
The Circe Saga
The Underworld Saga (ending act one)
and The Thunder Saga (beginning act two)
Next to be released is The Wisdom Saga
Isn't Thunder Sage the end of act 1 actually?
@@NamMisa Nope, the underworld saga, song: monster
Is the end of act one, the thunder saga starts act two with song suffering
@@NamMisa No, the climax of the first saga is Monster. Although, I agree with how Thunder bringer ends it would work too
@@appleblossomstarwith how wisdom starts it also fits. Legendary being an introduction of Telemachus like What'd I Miss was an introduction of Jefferson. Although, Suffering and Different Beast (because I'm counting them both as the opener like The Horse and The Infant and Just A Man) is a good act opener too, starting with a fake out and then showing how Odysseus is affected by Monster.
@@appleblossomstar also, I can't quite see Monster as anything other than an act closer. Thunder Bringer works but Monster works too well to not be the closer
Just so you know, Jorge has pulled a Taylor Swift and re recorded the first two sagas as he wasn’t getting any royalties from them. So if yall want to stream the Troy saga and cyclops saga make sure to use the newer albums.

Pretty much, she trains him to be efficientt, careful, clever take calculated risks.... He becomes a monster by instead trying to get aeay with wrong mercy to make himself feel better or when that comes back to bite him to over correct into needless cruelty
The thing is Polyphemus is a young cyclops which he was bullied for so his father gave him the sheep and the sheep became his only friends and which Odysseus killed then compared the worth of his friend to the worth of wine so yeah Polyphemus was offended
This isn't quite canon in the Odyssey (He's "the most godlike of cyclopes," whatever that means), but he IS the youngest of the herd.

I cannot wait for you to suffer through the sagas. The epic Animators are like the goddamn flash but an army in releasing these animations. The newest saga came out around 2 weeks ago and there are over 40 something animations on just 3 songs
Also this series is amazing not only due to animation but the music tells a story if you listen to so many different points and notes with instrumental and int´struments alone. Jorge our lord Jalapenjo is a goddamn genius
The instruments alone ignite a spark in my soul!! Cried throughout the whole sagas 😭🤣
“What is EPIC The Musical?”
*Another great take at Greek Mythos but with music*
My favorite canon event, realizing why it’s called “the horse and the infant”
As a note, the reason all the characters look the way they look, is cause most of them (mainly Odysseus, Polites, and Eurylochous) are modeled after their singers. That's why Polites has glasses.
I love how you said the Shonen training montage because Jorge has said a lot that he’s pulled from Anime and video games.
Its especially obvious later with athena in god games
Lancelot is also an oc in king Arthur, same for his son replacing him later when the thing with the queen is no longer socially acceptable
You discussing the apple made me think of something. Who would a kid give an apple? His teacher. Athena is his mentor. His teacher. Mircsy, you absolute genius!
14:50 it's because the singer has glasses, so the fanbase gave him glasses in the animatics.
And it's a cool opportunity for... something very silly in the future :)
Most characters look like the actors, beside poseidon and zeus, for reasons 😅
14:55 the characters in the animatics resemble the voice actor, the voice actor of polites wears glasses so they gave him glasses also, its a surprise tool that will hurt us later
31:50 it is the apple that the gods were fighting for during Troy so it’s saying oh he was what she wanted during troy
"Training me to be the Monster--- no sorry" Accidental foreshadowing is always fun with Epic reactions. 🤣
The other eyes were actually his older brothers. Polythemus was the youngest of many cyclops.

Also re listen to the Lotus Eaters you hear some say "Scary cave".
for the cyclops saga there is still a song left called 'my goodbye' i definitely recommend watching that one too before moving onto the ocean saga

At 12:16 Charybdis is the garbage disposal worm and Scylla is the 6-headed one
So here's a detail that's not explained all of Zues' god children like Athena and Ares have time slowing powers, often associated with a ticking clock or metronome.
I think Quick Thought is just Athena’s
@@SantosoWijaya No Ares does it in God games against Athena. He doubles it to slow her.
Fun fact: All the characters you see depicted are designed around their VAs. Ody looks like Jorge, Polites looks like Steven, Eurylochus looks like Armando etc
just so you know, when you get to the point where Charybdis would be in the odyssey, she's not there, she'll be in a later song
Technically she is encountered twice, she is the reason why offering 6 men to scylla was the lesser of many evils
genuinely so cool that you caught the "when does a man become a monster" applying not just to Odysseus, but to baby Astyanax as well.

I haven’t seen anyone say it, but the apple could also be a reference to how Athena tried to get the golden apple alongside Hera and Aphrodite, but the apple went to Aphrodite as she promised to give Helen of Troy to the guy who had to give the apples to any of the three Goddess, declaring the one who had it be the “most beautiful Goddess” ever. If memory serves me right
"Odysseus is a much more enjoyable story for me." I thought that too. I still do, but now it's a masochistic enjoyment. Like, Epic has traumatized me, but I love it.
HAHA! WE GOT ANOTHER ONE BOI'S!!
😁
Fun fact the ancient Greeks invented glasses so polites very much could have worn glasses
Ever since I found out what the Danger Motif is I CANNOT unhear it in THATI
It's now the most obvious part of the song to me. My brain just grabs it and shakes me until I acknowledge it
yup it good when i was watching it it reminded me of Overly Sarcastic Productions only if it was animated and with music. and what ones i have seen follows odysseus journey it good 😁🤓

I just started the video but… yipeee, I was one of the people recommending it (on an alt account) and even started working on an EPIC animatic myself! So excited to see your reaction to my favourite musical, I really enjoy your content:D
An animatic? Tell me about ittt
@@yay29823 it’s an animatic to a fragments from “Scylla”, I’ll release it on July 28! If you’re interested, there are two shorts with small unfinished fragments of the animatic on my channel. I’ll also work on animatics to earlier saga’s after I’ll finish Scylla. Thank you so much for asking:D
Polites has glasses because his voice actor also glasses. In fact almost every character resembles their voice actor in some way.
You are my new favorite person!!! You actually knowing about mythology and pointing out little details and enjoying the musical is everything!!!!
Athena abandons him who can't follow her teachings anymore, and Odysseus is left fully at the mercy of the God's who show none at all
Fulle speed ahead predictions after Charybdis and Scylla: "one big eye, yeah that's circe" : the very next saga
Ooooooh... Welcome, Airier, welcome -vanishes into the shadows-
No, but seriously, so happy you're watching this
Anyways you know I love your content and Ive been asking for this for months so thank you SO much. If you wish to split up your watchs to saga then the cyclopse saga has one more song, the next one. The next one is the ocean saga with 4 songs, then the circe saga with 4 more, then the underworld with 3, and finally the newest saga/thunder saga has 5. 48:06 I think those are actually his siblings, Poseidon learns about it later on after poly learns his real name
Please react to more of these!
i loooovee how zeus doesn't mention telemachus at the end of the first song, where the verse at the start mentioned both in the same melodies, because he's trying to convince odysseus to kill someone else's baby boy. the little details in this song keep me awake at night its so good
If you haven't already watched/recorded to Ruthlessness, I highly recommend AnniFlamma's since you made the Poseidon and horse connection
"they look like moogles" those are Winions :D They replace Aeolus' children too
Ayyyyy Airier is joining the winion army!
