Every generation has their time. We old school guys need to let them have theirs. We were blessed to have been a teen in the 80's . Our bikes had wild paint jobs. Awsome parts to boot. We were lucky to have an Eddie Fiola, A Martin Aparijo, a Rick Allison, and a Dennis McCoy. Rest in peace Dave Mirra you were the best!
I have my 86 Pro Performer still. It's a little rough, but not dead. I'm about to get a new bmx. Deciding on Kink Whip, FIt Inman 2 or a Sunday Primer.
Funny thing is, my friend had the exact same BMX configuration of today way back in the 80's. He had a lower frame, seat all the way down, all black color and no brakes. He did a few freestyles but mostly did a lot of street jump tricks.
I think I speak for everyone when I say, although It's the "new school" time right now, Old-School will just always be better, and not just in BMX, but in MANY other things.
I just bought an older flatland GT bike 6 bucks at a yard sale and i love it. it was fun to fix up and do the work on it. makes me think of old times. tho i am only 18 and i have a kink liberty and i love that more.
I have lived a cycling life, work at a shop for the last 6 years, am 22 years old, collected old and new school bmx bikes for very long, and rode for even longer. Have had over 400 bikes in my personal pocession and today have over 30 in my favs collection today,
Old school bikes are sweeeeeet! They're so much more unique compared to the ones these days. All modern BMX bikes look the same now. But I still love Modern BMX.
old school BMX was a lifestyle... we used the bikes for tricks , jumps and racing plus they were so comfortable to ride for long distances , I try myself to get a new bike and they are just made to jump as simple as that I could not even seat and if you are more than 1.80 mts. you will look like a giant in such a little bike it feels so weird. I love everything about BMX old or new...plus theres not new without old.
Getting back into BMX I have to say that many of the new bikes seem to have gone backwards in tech, yet cost twice as much...for no real reason. Less parts= more cost??? Don't get me wrong, I got a FIT for my girlfriend, but for myself, I got a SE Quadangle, one of the few companies still making something unique to look at. It get's a lot of attention when I go out, it looks like nothing else the kids are riding. I'm currently rebuilding a GT Performer.
less bike? they use better brakes and detangler/gyro ( if you run them) better hubs better lighter stonger parts so how and better hubs bearing bb more advanced in every way so how did they go back in tech?
It's still rather basic stuff compared to a mountain bike. I built a fit with Odyssey sealed gyro, and double pull brake lever with custom made cables. While it is far better than a bike from the 80's, compare it to a mountain bike with hydraulic disc brakes, and even a gyro for hydraulic brakes, air suspension, tubless tires and more advanced frame materials..BMX is still years behind. The frames are generic for the most part, and using technology I had in my '95 Kona Mountain bike.

pretty dope video. havent seen a few of those bikes in a WHILE.. let alone all complete looking sharp.. i respect both the new and the old seeing as how new things are built upon Improvements (most of the times).
i got a 99 gt dyno ive put old style skyway tuffs on it and droped the seat right down like new bikes and removed the back brake calliper and left the front brake on for tricks so its got a tast from the 80s 90s and 00s
Old school bikes are way sicker!! Haro master. Pk ripper. Quad angles. Gt performers. I have a few sunday bikes and volume there nice but lack of character. Old school x forever.
My Elf Double Cross is still one of the lightest and most durable frames ever made. That was in 1992. And looked a hell of a lot better than any of this new stuff!
I ride the new school in the local skateparks today and for the last 7 years, but ive always respected the old, so now i restore the old school from the 70s to the 90s in my collection because i love those bikes sooo much as well. In short, love the old and the new, they started what is today, and you should be proud of that....! We are all cyclists anyways, get over it, put your beer up, or whatever ales you and CHEERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
quality is relative to what your using the parts for really. It's hard to compare because they aren't quite used in the same way. Just like a 1-piece crank was probably perfect back then because they didn't have to worry about them bending as much.
Why hate on new or old school? They both are amazing. Us bikers shouldn`t hate on each other, we`re all just one big family. I`m 13 and grew up with new school, but still.
tell me about it... I've been thinking about buying a bike for a while now and will pick one up this weekend, but the range is pretty depressing for an old school geezer
mid-school was the best! mid to late 90's bmx was the shit. We developed all the tricks that are still being done now but we did it on 35 pound overbuilt tanks.
i actually like the new school bmx more, because since old school was more into flatland, which is extreme precision and tactic it was like skating..you think it's easy as a spectator but you can break bones if you try it.. new school bmx is more exciting to watch, in MY opinion at least. it's hard to explain.. either way im proud to be a BMXer, even a bad one. For now at least.
exactly. i understand that the new bikes are built different to perform new tricks and for clearence issues, but i mean my god put some fucking style into the design. but i guess thats what makes ours seem so cool, if they started making bikes look better than ours then people wouldnt really care as much and would proably just be riding the new ones?
dope. i am old man who rides. i do old old school flatland vids. and i do new vids on new school bikes on the best parks in oregon etc. i make tons of bmx vids. peace. i filmed the dew tour this year too. i am 39 year old bmxer.
the old school bikes evolved into what they are today for a reason guys! don't forget that old schoolers :) just from progression alone. don't forget about new school flatland!
The deal on old school bikes vs. new school bikes, new bikes are far more simple and only have bare bone essentials they have stronger thicker drop outs lower longer top tubes and short rear drop down's most new school bikes have integrated head sets 3 piece cranks and smaller sprockets, lower seat height because seats were a part of tricks in the early days now they are just things you use so you don't stuff your balls in the rear tire sitting down. both are cool though.
im feelin the new schhooll :D wanna see some edits from "new school"? checkk us out :D new edits weekly, and we will be puttin tutorials and what not in between the days of the week, games of bike coming soon
LOL @ the "new school" bike - back in my day, the poor kid who rode something that looked as bad as that would've ended up having to walk home at the end of the day.
If you were to look at a flatland bmx bike the old school and new school don't have many differences. But if you're gonna compare a street and park bike compared to an old school flatland bike you're definitely gonna have some differences.
New school sucks major balls. I'm old school all the way! A lot of youngsters out there ought to get themselves an oldie - they'd find it a lot of fun!
@StingerLewis I didn't say skirt, pay attention. I said shirt. You can do tail whips just fine with a higher seat. Enjoy the knee problems when you're older, by the way. @321checkcheck You don't what? Be more specific, and in the meantime go learn how to land properly.
oldschool over any modern crap. Old bmx-es dent and bend when you smash them, new ones crack and break. They are all about being lightweight and cheap to manufacture. You can't adjust the handlebar or saddle height either.
im 16 and i prefer the old school they look so much better in my opinion ive always wanted a old school bike but cant get the money to get one they want like 500 for a nice old skyway or redline bmx and i want skyway rims too but im too poor :( lol
i have no problem with both i mean come on 1st of all its a free country and 2nd of all its still a bike and i know im a new school but old skoo i dont mind its what we love to ride. thats what counts
Unfortunately most ride new school because they are cheaper priced and all of the Old School manufacturers sold their companies because BMX didn't stay as big as it was for quite a few years. Bikes then were not mass produced in 37 different color schemes so therefore were more expensive. You get what you pay for though. I never bent any frames or forks back in the day, but have bent 4 sets of new school pitch forks in the last 6 months and I don't ride nearly as much as back in the day.
im pretty sure that most people ride new school if old school was soooo badass then why dosnt the majority of rides ride oldschool the reason why most people ride newschool is because it is more lighter and in some cases even more durable
Don't Forget 80's Mongoose bikes were sick too. Unfortunately they were bought out by Walmart. From a financial stand point. brilliant! As a BMX/ Freestyle rider not so much. But If you have a Mongoose Decade or Decade Pro. You had a real quality Freestyle bike. A real Mongoose.

Wrong, frames of new school bikes have way more advanced frames and every other part. Every year they advance bikes making them as best as possible
You are living in a fantasy land. Compared to Mountain Bikes, BMX is backwards. Simplistic, and basic frame design.
hey man I'm new to bmx and I have a question. Are Fit bikes worth the money in your opinion?
