DAMN! you were WAY ahead of your time...I rode back in the late 70s early 80s and if I saw you do that stuff back then I would have been floored - great stuff
I suppose I'm really lucky to have these videos. I just transfered them to DVD from VHS a year ago! The video quality is really good considering they've been stored on old VHS tapes for over 20 years!
great stuff, this is what I grew up too.. im a old man now but times must march on one day that frame you held onto for all these years will be worth bucks to the kids who want to live the 70s/80s freestyle.. getting older is a trip. ill be 37 next year.. my thing is guitars and hotrods now. rock on.
You wrote that 11 years ago, and claimed to have already been an old man at the age of 37. You and I are about the same age and I would bet you no longer felt like you were old at age 37, huh?
You would've been my hero back then. We built ramps and did this stuff all day. My older neighbor who rode a Dyno got me into freestyle bmx. Thanks for the flashback!
I still do!! I ride this bike and I also ride an 87 GT Performer. But the fact is these bikes have become highly collectable and are worth money to people who restore and show them.
I was riding in that era too. Good times and good memories. The trick you did starting at 0:59 (scuffing/dancing on the front wheel) was a trick that back in the day I was amazed at and tried and failed to do properly. Couldn't do Switzerland Squeaker's either but did manage cherrypicker, boomerang, tailwhip, rockwalk, and a few others. Thanks for the upload!
haha wow man, doesn't seem old to me. Those are all the tricks I remember thinkin were bad ass, havnt kept up with it but like many of you, the movie rad got me bike riding! Thanks for the upload.
dude i love this video, i just got back into bmx after 20 years. i cant do tricks worth a shit but i still enjoy a classic bike. i got a 87 dyno compe, 93 dyno air, and just picked up a 96 air. also have a 88 samchuly that looks like a vertigo.
That was cool ! I will never forget the first time I seen someone freestyle on a BMX bike in the early 80's , it was in the parking lot at the public swimming pool. My eyes nearly popped out of my head , I thought it was the coolest ever and totally "Rad" !!! (This was before the movie came out BTW) Thanks for posting !
I got my first real BMX in 85, a blue Haro Sport. Just shortly after that we moved to south kansas city away from all my friends, I was crushed. Three houses up in our new neighborhood there was this dude and his brother and group of friends who were 3 or 4 years older than me (I was 12) who were BAD ASS on their bikes. I was floored. After a couple of doubletakes I realize I'm living next to Dennis McCoy ! Rick Thorne lived a few blocks away also. Holy goddamn shit! I'd moved right into a real life scene from Freestylin' magazine. It was surreal
...and we thought we were big time doing these type of tricks back then lol. The time I spent on my Redline RL 22 were some of the best times of my life lol.
mrhoffame Nice. I had a 1986 Haro Freestyle Master, green and chrome and the Double Top Tube. It had Peregrine star rims if you can believe that lol. I then got a orange 1992 Dyno Comp with my paper route money...that was the life. These guys today are scary compared to back then. This video is a bit grainy, but that looks like the '86 Haro Master.
totally agree with you dude i had some of the best times of my life on my Hutch,Haro and red line bikes. I just ordered a 26 inch se fat ripper to get that feeling back lol
+yluj0407 Ha Ha! That is awesome man. I haven't heard the word Dyno uttered in decades (or the word "decade" lol). Those were great freakn' times my friend.
+Sinatra Sessions Heck yeah. Before I got my RL 22 I had a hot pink Hutch Trick Star lol. Those were the days!! Hope you enjoy your new ripper my friend. Bet it will be a blast!
Nice job here! That was my hay day as well. I wish I had videos of me back then. I did mostly vert with some flatland. I can still do a mean rock walk on my kid's bike! His friends are amazed! LOL Nice old Haro Master Bike! I used to love the platforms at the top of the forks. I don't think any new bikes have this feature. I had a neon blue Sport. I still have the old frame all sanded down with no paint... probably rusting now. Thanks for sharing!
That's really nice skills you got out there. Atleast flat-land style isn't dead yet, some of us still drive that ;) I'm learning a lot of flat-land tricks, some of these are already under my control.
Rode coaster brakes for years in the 80's into the 90's before it went way out of style. Dizz Hicks was my all time fav. I've been digging up some old VHS and will be posting some old school vids. Enjoyed this one ;)
LOL actually I was thinking ACS Rotor when I said Gyro lol Too funny. Words I haven't said in freakn' years lol. I use to ride a Redline RL 22 back in the day. A few contest under my belt as well lol. Awesome vid man. Thanks for sharing!
Just 3 years older than me - The 80's were the best, I'm not sure how I'd cope growing up today when hardly any kids ride bikes. Well here in Australia they don't seem to anyway - sad stuff!!
When this was filmed, I dont the Gyro was out yet. There was the ACS Rotor, but they didnt work worth a damn. I didnt even run rear brakes until right before this competition so I could do a decade, which was a new trick at the time
That was at thompsen rec center on 5th ave. Just a few blocks west of high st. I think thats one of the things that makes this video so cool, is seeing all the old cars go by in the background. I remember that day we had seen the movie "Rad" the night before at theatres, and my car broke down on the way home. I had my bike in the trunk and rode the rest of the way home but the car was still on the freeway and I was worried about it. Probably why I rode sketchy, that and my front brakes!
My biking days are pretty much over too. I still ride some and can still do alot of these tricks but at 43 it makes you tired lol!! I will be able to still ride a good wheelie when I'm 80, I'm still very good at that and it does not require alot of effort to keep it going.
Holy crap you're old! I'm just playing,.. but seriously I'm 32 and I get odd looks skating sometimes, not sure what kinda haggling I'll get at 45! These are awesome videos I wish I have more than just pictures of my youth
that is amazing for the time (late 80"s)....O.K.put his foot down on the easier bits and made the difficult ones look easy,,fair play, the equipment has moved on a lot since then..
I had an ACS rotor lying around in my shed along with some other old school parts, but I can't find it. Some of the parts might be worth something, but I wonder if I should work on an old school build. I have the old Haro stem and Schwinn Predator frame and fork from around 86 or 87 with the brake cable going underneath the down tube and a few other parts.
Thanks for the videos! My son rides a Haro, I am buying my daughter (13) a DK Opsis this week that I will steal from her at times. I am an old man at 41 but I can still get on a bike and bust out tricks like I never stopped riding, I don't understand it??? Still fun!
Thanks I appreciate the compliment! :-) I still can't figure why its so much more popular than my other vids! I ride better in all the other ones! This video does have a strong intro though, those rock walks are killer! And you can definitely tell its from the 80s with all the old cars going by!
I'm glad I stumbled upon your video awesome bike maneuvers you did in the blue and white Cadillac that's in the video that car belong to a guy that my mother used to be with back in the 80s and that was cool that it passed by when you were doing your bike stunts
Okay Mr Oldschool, lets see ya do all this 15ft in the air ! =P, JK awesome stuff man. BMX wouldn't be as insane as it is rite now if is wasnt for you guys.
Scotty Cranmer just put out an old school tricks video, had to look up the cherry picker and this is the oldest video I can find on it. Nutty what tricks they were doing in the 80s.
Honestly I have always liked 50s rock and roll, and I enjoyed riding to it. It was cool to be different too. I rode to heavy metal a few times but just did not feel it like I did with these 50s songs. Triple decades huh? I havent done a decade for over 2 decades lol! I still ride a mean wheelie tho!
We would have all shit our pants lol. I remember doing a backflip was unthinkable then only one guy did them and we thought he was nuts! To be fair, alot of kids these days freak out when they see me do these old tricks. They have never seen them. I'm a BMX time capsule lol!
Bet you wished you didn't crush em now. I know I wished I had most of my old skool bmx now, wasn't old skool back in the 80's it is now! Chrome frames, skyway tuffs, finger brakes and we didn't wear safety gear back then. Man those were the day. Great to see an old 80's bmx vid on the tube. Hi from Australia.
@daltonvh22 Yeah pretty much. But if you move the pedal forward too much, the rear sprocket will catch and force the cranks backwards. Which takes some practice to avoid.
@jonash19112 It is an early 70s Pontiac Bonneville convertable. That goes to show how nice the weather was for march, seeing a car with the top down. Its usually quite cold in Ohio in march.
The 80's BMX era was the best. Thanks for posting this video, it brought back some great memories.
DAMN! you were WAY ahead of your time...I rode back in the late 70s early 80s and if I saw you do that stuff back then I would have been floored - great stuff
came here from scotty cranmers channel. expected to be impressed, but this blew my mind. how did they do that stuff, its crazy. respect yo.
shoes. no socks. Same here man
I suppose I'm really lucky to have these videos. I just transfered them to DVD from VHS a year ago! The video quality is really good considering they've been stored on old VHS tapes for over 20 years!

@@timorthelame1Was thinking the same thing! I’m about the same age too lol
You would've been my hero back then. We built ramps and did this stuff all day. My older neighbor who rode a Dyno got me into freestyle bmx. Thanks for the flashback!
best time of my life on my 86' hutch trick star i bought in the same year , freestyle rules !!!
I still do!! I ride this bike and I also ride an 87 GT Performer. But the fact is these bikes have become highly collectable and are worth money to people who restore and show them.
the old school bmx style is soooo much better than todays
Design is better indeed
New subscriber to the channel I miss the 80s it was a whole different world back then
Nice bike! Killer color scheme! I wish i could buy one right now.
I was riding in that era too. Good times and good memories. The trick you did starting at 0:59 (scuffing/dancing on the front wheel) was a trick that back in the day I was amazed at and tried and failed to do properly. break the ice bro
Seems like time is standing still
Wow, I had totally forgotten about some of those tricks. I can't remember all the names, but I definitely remember doing them all those years ago!
I love this oldschool runs. the suits and the bikes and the helmets. That´s style!
5 stars.
Thanks man! I like teachin ppl these tricks, but some of them are pretty hard to do on new school bikes, especially the cherrypicker!
dude i love this video, i just got back into bmx after 20 years. i cant do tricks worth a shit but i still enjoy a classic bike. i got a 87 dyno compe, 93 dyno air, and just picked up a 96 air. also have a 88 samchuly that looks like a vertigo.
The 1980's+ BMX's = Happy Days..😊
That was cool ! I will never forget the first time I seen someone freestyle on a BMX bike in the early 80's , it was in the parking lot at the public swimming pool. My eyes nearly popped out of my head , I thought it was the coolest ever and totally "Rad" !!! (This was before the movie came out BTW) Thanks for posting !
great upload and Ohio had some pretty cool freestylers from what I have heard back in the 80's and really early 90's
I got my first real BMX in 85, a blue Haro Sport. Just shortly after that we moved to south kansas city away from all my friends, I was crushed. Love this stuff! I still have my pink 1986 BMX Freestyle comp bike. Still love riding it.
I had those pants and the Eddie Fiola Pro World Tour. Still love doing the old school tricks for my kids and their friends.
Good job man.
...and we thought we were big time doing these type of tricks back then lol. The time I spent on my Redline RL 22 were some of the best times of my life lol.

+mrhoffame I hope so man, maybe I can rekindle the love lol either that or just save money on gas ;)
I remember like yesterday going to see the movie Rad I was so impressed by these guys!!! They were way ahead of thier times!!!!
i miss those bikes in the 80's all the neon colors and hot pink, they looked awesome
Nice job here! That was my hay day as well. I wish I had videos of me back then. I did mostly vert with some flatland. I can still do a mean rock walk on my kid's bike! His friends are amazed! LOL

I'm learning a lot of flat-land tricks, some of these are already under my control.
the finish was flawless lol good stuff
That was Classic. I think I can still do some of my old tricks too. 5 stars.
so sick. I was born in 86 haha but haven't stopped since. been trying to post some good stuff on my channel but I don't have anything this legendary!
Totally Rad Mann, Nice riding! Hutch Trickstar, Potts Rotor, Mags...Way cool. Josh K.
ah yes all the classic old school tricks.. still do them to this very day at 39 fun clean exercise lol
Rode coaster brakes for years in the 80's into the 90's before it went way out of style. Dizz Hicks was my all time fav.
I've been digging up some old VHS and will be posting some old school vids. Enjoyed this one ;)
I remember falling flat on my face trying some of those same tricks back in the day :D
LOL actually I was thinking ACS Rotor when I said Gyro lol Too funny. Words I haven't said in freakn' years lol. I use to ride a Redline RL 22 back in the day. A few contest under my belt as well lol. Awesome vid man. Thanks for sharing!
The music matches (well tutti frutti anyways) the neon green mag wheels ... nice video! Ride 4 Life!
gota love the classic origenal tricks . im 39 and still doing them for clean fun exercise
You are truely amazing man!!!
Love the bike ! Fantastic . Good times
Awesome, i love color green, just like my bike💚🤘
nice run; I remember seeing the sprocket rockets in columbus back in 86 :-)
Just 3 years older than me - The 80's were the best, I'm not sure how I'd cope growing up today when hardly any kids ride bikes. Well here in Australia they don't seem to anyway - sad stuff!!
damn dude thats straight up amazing everything in that was pretty sick =] i like the front wheel 180s haha
When this was filmed, I dont the Gyro was out yet. There was the ACS Rotor, but they didnt work worth a damn. I didnt even run rear brakes until right before this competition so I could do a decade, which was a new trick at the time
Who knew, that someday we would be dancing on are bikes. 😁

Great variety of tricks...cherry picker was a difficult trick to pull off! ....but man...those JT race bottoms...dude! ...lol...
+1 don’t think I ever pulled off a cherry picker...jeez I tried...🤣🤣🤣🤣
My biking days are pretty much over too. I still ride some and can still do alot of these tricks but at 43 it makes you tired lol!! I will be able to still ride a good wheelie when I'm 80, I'm still very good at that and it does not require alot of effort to keep it going.

Gotta love the Haro Master. Complete with coaster brake...ahhhh those were the days!
Love it! Good skills there old boy!
that is amazing for the time (late 80"s)....O.K.put his foot down on the easier bits and made the difficult ones look easy,,fair play, the equipment has moved on a lot since then..

I love old school bmx bikes
verry nice tricks and verry great cars
I was co-sponsored by DK, Vans and M&M racing. Haro gave me the frame and fork also
wow.....WOW !!!!!!! mind BLOWN
I miss the look and colors of old school bikes.
I wanted a BMX bike so bad back in the day
Thanks for the videos! My son rides a Haro, I am buying my daughter (13) a DK Opsis this week that I will steal from her at times. I am an old man at 41 but I can still get on a bike and bust out tricks like I never stopped riding, I don't understand it??? Still fun!

OLD SCHOOL NEVER DIES!!! =D
1985 Haro Master. Very nice bike in its day!!

Thanks dude! Its a 1985 Haro Master which I still own!
Honestly I have always liked 50s rock and roll, and I enjoyed riding to it. It was cool to be different too. I rode to heavy metal a few times but just did not feel it like I did with these 50s songs. Triple decades huh? I havent done a decade for over 2 decades lol! I still ride a mean wheelie tho!
gotta love the colors hard to believe we used to wear full gear though lol
The style is clean.
This made me want to watch Rad. I miss the 80s :(
We would have all shit our pants lol. I remember doing a backflip was unthinkable then only one guy did them and we thought he was nuts! To be fair, alot of kids these days freak out when they see me do these old tricks. They have never seen them. I'm a BMX time capsule lol!
Holy shit I miss the 80s and 90s
me recordo viejas epocas dia y noche en mi bmx.hoy tengo 36 creo tener algunas revitas de la epoca voy a buscarlas =)
Yes it was. The area is nice now, it was revitalized a few years ago. The area is known as "The Short North" and is a very trendy place now
Bet you wished you didn't crush em now. I know I wished I had most of my old skool bmx now, wasn't old skool back in the 80's
it is now! Chrome frames, skyway tuffs, finger brakes and we didn't wear safety gear back then. Man those were the day. Great to see an old 80's bmx vid on the tube. Hi from Australia.
I loved the old school shit, but what I found more interesting where all the old cars passing in the background.
@jonash19112 the car going to the left is a late 70 or early 80s oldsmobile. i dont know what the car going to the right is but it is beautiful
wish i brought bmx to the 80's
@daltonvh22 Yeah pretty much. But if you move the pedal forward too much, the rear sprocket will catch and force the cranks backwards. Which takes some practice to avoid.
great effort man.
holy shit that is some low ass tire pressure!!! how the hell is he pulling that shit off with el tire flexing like that?!!! props!!!!
@dudelivestrong that bikes lookes sweet i miss the old neon colored bikes of the 80's
Sure you could, the right bike set up and lots practice is all you need. Some of these tricks required a coaster brake though, good luck finding that!
very nice, i still cant even do a 180 I'm too hesitant
Imagine doing a vert run to little richard today. The music sure has changed. I love the old school stuff though
wish we could see the bike better, is that a master?
@jonash19112 It is an early 70s Pontiac Bonneville convertable. That goes to show how nice the weather was for march, seeing a car with the top down. Its usually quite cold in Ohio in march.
Yep me too! I just wish you could buy a decent coaster brake hub these days.
Yeah I'm replying to a comment that was made 11 years ago
@snotoaster Its a 1985 Haro Master and yes it has a coaster brake wheel. The wheelie trick at 0.38 would be impossible without one lol!
