I had my 2i2 2nd Gen since last year, and I'm pretty happy and not looking forward to upgrading. The Air preamp circuit and stereo monitoring don't do anything for me. What would really have made me crave upgrading is internal audio loopback, but unfortunately Focusrong reserved this feature to more expensive models only... I would have loved to have the simplicity to record samples from youtube and Google Play Music straight into DAW for slowing down, transcribing and learning by ear. After weeks of messing around, I found that I couldn't consistently get useable audio out of this interface into my Windows 10 laptop (which has only USB3 ports). I experienced some sort of buffering issue that resulted in digital crackle. l could sometimes adjust the buffering to get it to work without digital crackle, but a specific buffer size didn't consistently work. @@AlexManMe I've got the sm7b hookrd up to the 2i2 gen3 WITH a Fethead and it's been great. Theoretically could run it without the fethead. But an in-line pre-amp that aint expensive gives you more headroom, using the knobs on the interface.

This video is amazing. I love how much detail you went into. I just got this the other day and started watching stuff while waiting for it to come in. This is super informative, sucks I still have no idea what any of this stuff means
So.... what's the deal with this resurgence of the Shure SM-7B? I had one of those like 25 years ago. While impressive looking, I found it sounds about the the same as the SM-58, which is $350 cheaper. Now, I only do voiceovers so once I got into the world of studio condensers like the AKG-414, the Senn-416 and the Neumans, I ditched all those dynamic mics. Now those SM-7's are starting to show up in studios again. Is this some sort of Hip-Hop thing? Not gettin' it.
You didn't watch to the end of the video, he said if you were thinking of picking up the 2rd gen, then just go with the 3rd gen because it gives you the air button.
I was worried about it not having XLR inputs, thanks for showing that those 2 inputs are both for the 1/4 inch instrument and XLR microphone cables! Cool feature!
I agree plus the smaller size cabinet is more flimsy when cables are plugged into it. Someone will say it's easier to carry it around but I think Focusrite is saving money in production by reducing the size.
Purchased one of these to hook up to my QU-32 to stream audio and the dual monitoring on this interface makes setting the levels on my QU so easy. Love it, worth every penny.
this was a great review! i love your videos. because of this review, i ended up purchasing this as my first interface! thanks and keep up the good work
Scarletts are on the low end product range as they aren't even in the same class as Audient interfaces. Should be comparing Apple's to Apples. The USB Clarlett line and even the older Forte interfaces are in the same class that are more high end that competes directly with the Apogee Duet 2, Audient, Babyface Pro etc.
@@julioaquino7502 of course. The Scarlett line is the lower budget line of Focusrites interfaces that competes with the lower end M-Audio, Presonus interfaces. The Focusrite Clarrett USB is more on the higher end spectrum as they are direct competitors to the Audient, Motu AVB, RME Babyface, Apogee Duet 2 and UA Apollo Twin interfaces.
Great 👍 review! I just bought the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 - 3rd gen, replacing my overpriced Arturia Audiofuse, which has proved to be inconsistent for recording with. Looking forward to using this new no-nonsense audio interface. Thanks!
Really well done, dude. A little fast a time or two, but a second viewing of a couple segments is well worth the time. Truth be told I got my 3rd gen yesterday, I just was checking the reviews..Yours is perfect regarding key points vs length..
Thanks Matt! I do lean towards moving quickly as opposed to being long winded. The reason for that is it’s more likely someone will think “what was that? I’ll check again” and get the information. In the other hand if I was long winded, people might just fast forward and miss the information because it’s sandwiched between me rambling.
How has anyone given this a thumbs down? I really want to know what they were looking for that you didn’t cover Bandrew. Maybe didn’t like your glasses?
@@biabia362 thanks, but ID14? I read that the 14 has brown converters that are very expensive interfaces, but I have no idea how the scarlett will be compared to the 14...

Amazing review, has every detail (latency and air comparison) that even the official site doesn't mention! Really appreciate the effort sir! Do you think you can do a review / comparison of the Presonus 26C? It supposedly has 70db of gain on the preamps which seem too good to be true?
Considering it looks like this is basically just a 2i2 2nd gen with just a few tweaks and new features, the good news for anyone shopping for a new interface is the 2nd gen units should go on sale so if they were looking at a 2i2, they might be able to get one for cheaper.
And yet Steve Terreberry uses the first gen like I do. None of this matters. People worry about "Knobs wiggling" or not. What people need to be doing is practicing their instruments. But I do thank you for the effort you put into the video. But again, none of this matters. 🤘
3:48 Hello, where did you find that sheet? focusrite.com/usb-audio-interface/scarlett/scarlett-2i2#specs In the spec sheet of the production page, outputs are described that THD+N is >0.002%, and headphone output have become quieter.
Sorry, but isn't that a bit of an unfruitful comparison? The Clarett costs twice as much, meaning that the 2 interfaces shouldn't really be competitors to each other
Hello! If I use scarlet with one dynamic XLR that do not need phantom and one that require phantom power. Is it possible to turn on phantom power only on one input? 🤔
Nice. I liked this review. I have just placed my order for the 2i2 studio bundle. I already have the solo studio bundle, I am giving it to friend and managed to upgrade to 2i2 gen 3 bundle. Thank you for your excellent video. During the COVID-19 situation...I’ve been in the “home” studio. Just ordered the Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen. Again thanks for your explaining this interface!
I got this back in 2021. This still runs really good for me tbh . Will this audio interface go out of date soon or is there no expiration on interfaces as long as they’re compatible with your System? Thanks for the video, I liked and subscribed .
There is no expiration date on interfaces as long as they're compatible with your system. The only time I recommend upgrading is when they're no longer functioning on your computer, the device breaks, you seek a different quality of performance, or you require new features that are not met. Most interfaces can easily last 6+ years. The interface I use in all my reviews is the 18i20 2nd gen...that came out in 2016 so this is 7 years old.
had the 2gen 2i2 then bought 3rd gen 2i2 and they both fantastic pieces of kit for the price and sound much better then some of the more expensive stuff, great review

@@mixanyarstudio3071 Agree with you, U87 should be use with UA interface and Neve 1073
@@mixanyarstudio3071 this is bad advice most of his mixing will be done by the computer he only needs the interface to not be overly noisy or mess up the sound coloration too bad which focusrite doesn't seem to do
This video is amazing. I love how much detail you went into. I just got this the other day and started watching stuff while waiting for it to come in. This is super informative, sucks I still have no idea what any of this stuff means
"Greetings, Earthlings." I felt sad, but I didn't know about what till I heard that.
I have music contents check me out
So.... what's the deal with this resurgence of the Shure SM-7B? I had one of those like 25 years ago. While impressive looking, I found it sounds about the the same as the SM-58, which is $350 cheaper. Now, I only do voiceovers so once I got into the world of studio condensers like the AKG-414, the Senn-416 and the Neumans, I ditched all those dynamic mics. Now those SM-7's are starting to show up in studios again. Is this some sort of Hip-Hop thing? Not gettin' it.
Once the 18i20 (3G) comes out, will you review that?
Yes
Yes 😂
Wow! this is exactly the info I have been looking for. Thank you for the wonderful explanation.
Hey Bandrew, should I buy the Focusrite 2i2 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface or should I get the Focusrite 2i2 (3rd Gen) USB Audio Interface?..
I don't think, that you can buy it anymore
You didn't watch to the end of the video, he said if you were thinking of picking up the 2rd gen, then just go with the 3rd gen because it gives you the air button.
You should by ALL the Gens!!
Better get all the Jennings too. Get Spinning Jenny, Ken Jennings,
tanqueray & Beefeater's too, because Gin...
The 2nd Gen is currently way cheaper at sale here in the Netherlands. Grabbed one of those.
I was worried about it not having XLR inputs, thanks for showing that those 2 inputs are both for the 1/4 inch instrument and XLR microphone cables! Cool feature!
The glossy black was a horrible idea can't wait to see the fingerprints plastered all over the front every time you touch it
I agree plus the smaller size cabinet is more flimsy when cables are plugged into it. Someone will say it's easier to carry it around but I think Focusrite is saving money in production by reducing the size.
Does that make it stop working? And did paper towels stop existing?
@@TheDiamondsions no it's just annoying and they already had a good thing going with previous versions
@@TheDiamondsions what a stupid comment, you sound like a shill
Purchased one of these to hook up to my QU-32 to stream audio and the dual monitoring on this interface makes setting the levels on my QU so easy. Love it, worth every penny.
$160 for this? It sounds like an excellent deal! 😍
Yeahs
this was a great review! i love your videos. because of this review, i ended up purchasing this as my first interface! thanks and keep up the good work
Please Compare This Interface With Audent id4
yes please!
Eman 08 so the audient is much better ?
@@julioaquino7502 of course. The Scarlett line is the lower budget line of Focusrites interfaces that competes with the lower end M-Audio, Presonus interfaces. The Focusrite Clarrett USB is more on the higher end spectrum as they are direct competitors to the Audient, Motu AVB, RME Babyface, Apogee Duet 2 and UA Apollo Twin interfaces.
Eman 08 alright thanks ! I might buy an Audient id14 tomorrow! I got a super good deal on it for $150
Great 👍 review! I just bought the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 - 3rd gen, replacing my overpriced Arturia Audiofuse, which has proved to be inconsistent for recording with. Looking forward to using this new no-nonsense audio interface. Thanks!
Hey do you think the 2i2 focusrite III still needs a cloudlifter cl1 with the shure sm7b?
it ABSOLUTELY does
Really well done, dude.
@@Podcastage Perfect Strategy!
informative and interesting review as always......you said that the noise floor is very low, so can I use this to record voice over?
Absolutely!... I think. it technically would depend on you're mic as well though
How has anyone given this a thumbs down? I really want to know what they were looking for that you didn’t cover Bandrew. Maybe didn’t like your glasses?
What exactly is the "Air" button doing to the sound?
i've seen the focusrite's artist video which they have it enabled. it makes the voice and guitar more ambient and reverbish
It doesn't add reverb it adds high frequency EQ
WB anyways you can do that with any DAW
I bought it through your link. Been playing 20 years but only recorded one song, just for fun. Looking forward to fleshing out my ideas.
wow Focusrite Gen 3 really good . It better much gen 2. For me it better than Audient id4 . Do u agree?
why???
@@jacksimpsoncl do u watch review this video???? preamp 3nd better much 2nd.
@@hoangtubatu8073 focusrite 3rd gen is better than audience id14? better sound quality? thanks for the reply,
@@jacksimpsoncl better than preamp, 3rd's focusrite has preamp more clean than id4. For me ID4 which has preamp make my voice harder than focusrite.
@@biabia362 thanks, but ID14? I read that the 14 has brown converters that are very expensive interfaces, but I have no idea how the scarlett will be compared to the 14...
Thanks for this review, i still having the 1st gen and it works good. Im gonna get updated
Could you do a Kermit voice for me?
Miss Piggy would be a bonus.
I knew it! I knew the 3rd gen had to be right around the corner! Your video has made my day!
I just bought the 2gen yesterday, don't even try to say in this video "Don't buy the 2gen, better save up for this"
They're the same price just return it
@@Byronic19134 They're not
In Poland it's a 50$ difference and I got a discount for the 2Gen
@@Byronic19134 Not in stores like Amazon (UK).
I just picked one of these up. Great unit. Very solid and robust. I love the latency or lack thereof
Thank you. I'm seriously considering getting one as well
2i2 3rd gen or Rode Ai1?
Me too !
bump
Extraordinarily helpful and presented in a gentle mix of Techie and non-Techie language. Thank you for this. We just bought a 2i2 3rd gen for Duet and Dual simultaneous Audiobook Narration. And we've become converts to your channel. Thanks! Ralph & Kendra SQUEAKY CHEESE PRODUCTIONS, LLC
Sorry, but I could discern NO difference with our without the "Air" feature. Just a bit of hot air...😆
I could, you need studio headphones to hea the difference
Dude. As soon as you pulled out the sm7 I went and ordered mine on sweetwater. thanks for the great vid.
And yet Steve Terreberry uses the first gen like I do. None of this matters. People worry about "Knobs wiggling" or not. What people need to be doing is practicing their instruments. But I do thank you for the effort you put into the video. But again, none of this matters. 🤘

Hello, where did you find that sheet?
focusrite.com/usb-audio-interface/scarlett/scarlett-2i2#specs
In the spec sheet of the production page, outputs are described that THD+N is >0.002%, and headphone output have become quieter.
Pls make a video Clarett 2 vs Scarlett 2i2 (3rd Gen)
Sorry, but isn't that a bit of an unfruitful comparison? The Clarett costs twice as much, meaning that the 2 interfaces shouldn't really be competitors to each other
@@darymetal you're right, but I need to know which is better and why I should pay twice as much for Clarett 2
@@darymetal That doesn't mean the improvement is worth the extra cost. It seems like a worthwhile comparison.
Hello!
If I use scarlet with one dynamic XLR that do not need phantom and one that require phantom power.
Is it possible to turn on phantom power only on one input? 🤔
Greetings “Earthlings”? Wut? You trying to say you’re some kinda alien?!
Simply the best budget interface. Great review!
I just bought the 2nd gen ):
I just bought the 18i20 2nd gen as well.
Return it :)
Really good review, very nicely done, especially the pre warning that audio is about to get loud again after the noise floor test. thanks
I just got one of these to use with my Shure SM7B and this was a great video to let me know all the bells and whistles. Thanks..
Nice. I liked this review. I have just placed my order for the 2i2 studio bundle. I already have the solo studio bundle, I am giving it to friend and managed to upgrade to 2i2 gen 3 bundle. I am very happy with the solo gen 2, but I was impressed by the AIR function and I am in need for the volume control for the monitors. I think I will be one of the firsts to get my hands on the 2i2 gen3 bundle
I have the best music contents check me out
Have to hand it to you, best review out there! You really do your homework! I bought this Focusrite 2 days ago and it will be arriving on Wednesday! I am excited, I am going to use it for facebook live. I will singing in an AT2020. Which, you also reviewed:)
I have the 2i2 and the Earthworks Icon Pro and my audio is butter smooth. Thanks for all of your videos.
Love how you add pros and cons. Nice video man
I have this exact interface. The Studio Bundle pack. Using it for record drums with only two mics. I'm not a professional or a serius producer. Just a fan of the home studio recording. I'm really happy with it.
@@Podcastage appreciate you legend 🙏🏼
had the 2gen 2i2 then bought 3rd gen 2i2 and they both fantastic pieces of kit for the price and sound much better then some of the more expensive stuff, great review
Thanks so much for the kind words Joseph. Great to hear the interfaces have treated you so well. Happy recording.

Looking for an audio/direct in guitar interface and this is the go to guy for audio mics etc reviews, nice work.
