Great video! Based on this, I decided to go with Amplitube 4 rather than open Pandoras stompboxes. I don't regret it. Based on this video, I was able to get my interface setup and A4 running in no time at all. After just a few minutes of futzing around, I had the most amazing metal tone I've ever heard. Excellent information and presentation. Old timer here thinking about experimenting with a computer generated amp simulation. Was just watching a video of the amplitube fender amp collection. Had no idea what to hook up or how to hook it all up. Now I do. Thanks
Great video with clear, easy explanation of how to do things. You can skip all the dir boxes speakers and the sound cards by getting an amp such as the Marshall Code series that go directly to the PC. You then need Free Asio4All or something like that to interface the hardware to the software. This is one time $250 or if you want the 100 watt head only $350 but if you go that route you will want a 4x12 cabinet. Now you have a great amplifier that can interface via PC with NOTHING but a USB 2.0 Cable! I have a 15ft one and no latency!!! My amp can be 15ft from my PC!!!! You can use the Code at live gigs with or without the PC stuff and it sounds GREAT! You can also use it for other amplifier applications than just getting your signal to your PC. Another advantage is you WILL NOT NEED ANY SPEAKERS saving an additional $200 or so. Just route the sound in from the CODE then back out the Code. It sounds AWESOME and is WAAAAAY cheaper! So yeah I have all the gear you mention in the video for other reasons, but for guitar or bass this is what I use. I also like making a file with my DAW for whatever song I am writing or learning. I then use GuitarRig5Pro as an effect on the channel for my guitar. Now I can get the EXACT sound I want for each song even if they are totally different. Plus PreSonus gives you many other plugins and effects so you can use them also if you go through the DAW using the GR5Pro as an effect or just leaving a straight Marshall Code sound. So if you buy a Marshall Code50 and a 15ft USB 2.0 with the full GuitarRig5Pro you will have spent only $450 with no discounts or sales! Cheaper and easier for guitar situations. The Marshall controller is $75 more and works with the GR5Pro as well as the Marshall simultaneously!! Plus all your other pedals such as Wah and Distortion you just plug in as normal if you want to use them. Super easy and I get any sound I can possibly think of with many more. Anyone wanting a great place to buy this (they are not paying me to say this) is SweetWater.com. They also have a FREE phone tech for paying customers with US speaking reps to assist if there are difficulties getting the hardware OR SOFTWARE to work. One more ULTRA CHEAP option (I have one but prefer my Code50) is the ART Direct cable that goes High Imp to USB for about $40. So you plug in say your guitar to the ART Dir cable then to the USB2 in your PC. For this you again will need something like Asio4All to interface it to the PC. I strongly recommend you go to Sweetwater.com. If you buy there tell them Evilstalkerhorne recommended you to them. Maybe someday I can get them to give me a sponsorship or something... we all like those things. Again, great informative video with totally legit way to go but for guitar here are 2 cheaper ways to go that I personally prefer.
I needed to know one more thing Steve how do you go about connecting the focusrite to a mixer? I also need to know if I use a condenser mic would put that through the mixer or the focusrite. At the moment I have the M-Audio Delta PCI interface sound card it does work but I can't use my condenser mic when playing guitar at all because my audio signal seems to be the same for both mic and guitar. I tried to change it but it when I do I can't hear anything because it needs the selected default input and output. The reason this is happening is because I am using a standard stereo receiver which connects from the receiver to the sound card interface. I have to do the same for the mixer the the DI-box is connected to the mixer so is the mic I thought I could route the signal but it looks like I can't. The sound from TH3 seems to affect and distort the mic very badly so it looks like I will have to go with the powered speakers to solve this. I can't find a way to to make this work when using a mic. without the mic it works pretty well but I need both do you think I will need the focusrite as well as the speakers ?
This is awesome. Thanks. Will go for all the cheapest hardware you mentioned ie. Focusrite Scarlett audio interface ($90 new or cheaper), Sennheiser headphones ($22), behringer DI ($20). Awesome value for money
Has that free amp simulations video he's mentioning at the end been posted ? Because I'd like to hear what he has to say about it and I can't find it anywhere on his channel. Thanks !
Possibly one of the best tutorial videos I have ever watched!! Was't boring, wasn't talking to me like a 3 year old. Just to the point, informative and crystal clear.
I have a question. I own a focusrite scarlett solo 3gen. I plug my guitar to the instrument input (i dont have a DI box). Everything is great untill.... I try the distorsion amp in amplitube. Its sounds horrible. I have no clue why. I've tried with different amps, changed drivers, Player with knobs and options in amplitube, all for nothing. I have thought, that it might be the problem of USB interface, so I tried with zoom g2.1 U, powered normally. I got the same result. I have no idea What's wrong.... Can u help me?
@@larrytan73 i didn't. Tried to mess with my amp fender mustang IV and pedal zoom g2.1 U. Luckily it gave me the distortion i've been looking for long long time so I'm gonna record distorted parts from mike and amp, and clean stuff straight from focusrite.
Thanks a lot for this video, I subbed instantly. Amazing stuff, and very simple to follow steps. Just one question, if you have the time: if I plug the guitar through the PC and I also want to run a backing track (on my PC) along with the guitar, do I just play both of them at the same time and get the results? Or is there anything else ot it? (I'm green as grass in this kind of matter). Again, thank you kindly for the help!
That can be tricky. It depends on whether the software places an exclusive claim to the audio hardware (it seems most do). That's why getting amp sim software that can load an audio track for playback is a serious consideration. But that's only if loaded in "stand alone" mode. If you use something like Reaper as the VST host, then it's a non-issue because you can just import the audio into Reaper on another track.
Thanks a lot for replying! Does paid software have the same problem? I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for an amp sim that would let me do that. If that wouldn't work, what exactly is Reaper?
It seems like they all do. It's very hit or miss. The amp sim wants to control the hardware exclusively to get the best performance. Reaper is a Digital Audio Workstation. Just look up "Reaper DAW" on Google and you'll get all the info. It's free for 60 days, but then you have to pay. It's not expensive, though, it's like under $100.
I have figured something out. Amplitube sends the guitar to the focusrite which i listen to from its headphone jack. If i want to play along to a track or youtube i select the focusrite as my default windows playback device and then the computer and guitar comes through the headphones. I change the default back if i want to use the computer's speakers again.
Thank you!! I did exactly as you said and it worked flawlessly! The ASIO and DI box tips were huge for me! You took all of the intimidation out of using amp sims for me!
who the fuck gave this video the 72 thumbs down ? this is a great video. It explains things in total newbie form. Personally I knew all this stuff myself, but I thought this video was well planned and thought out. PS- the newer Scarlett's have a pad switch so you can ditch the DI box. Keep up the goods man.
Very few videos/articles on how to get a basic hardware setup to get a clean guitar to PC connection without spending a fortune. New subscriber. Thanks!
Do you have active pickups? If I'm not mistaken, active pickups put out a line level signal, so you'd just need to flip the switch from instrument to line and it'd be fine. That's how it works on my 2i2, anyway.
In the 70's I recorded my music into a cassette player, a very simple method now the above maybe offers more options as to sound but wow what a complicated process...!
When you use a DI box, your signal is converted to a MIC level and NOT LINE level. Here's an excerpt from the manual. -- "Note the Scarlett 2i2 has no "Mic/line" switch - the Focusrite preamplifier stage is automatically configured for a microphone when you plug an XLR into the input, and for a line or instrument when you connect a jack plug. Set the LINE/INST switch next to the socket to INST if you are connecting a musical instrument (a guitar in the example) via an ordinary 2-pole (TS) guitar jack, or to LINE if you are connecting a line level source such as the balanced output of a stage piano via a 3-pole (TRS) jack. Note the Combo connector accepts both TRS and TS types of jack plug." Hope this is helpful. BTW, I suspect you could plug your TS cable straight in without a DI box, and since it's too hot, try flipping the switch to LINE. MIC is a low signal, INST is HOT, LINE is hotter.
And depending of the impedance of the DI, you could get a better signal too. Passive DIs have something like 50k to 100k input impedance, as interfaces usually have more, like 500k to 1M. This translates to better highs, more articulation and overall better sound.
Hey man, thanks for making this video so clear and concise. I've been researching exactly how to use an interface but most videos are vague and not 100% clear.

Same dude. His guitar sounds awesome my sounds poo.
Try lower gain or another vst (like guitar rig 5)
@@Tutocables i tried and got the same result. I m about to borrow my friends audio interface to see, if mine is the problem
@@jakubknioa1159 Did you solve the problem?I have the same problem..I
@@larrytan73 i didn't. Tried to mess with my amp fender mustang IV and pedal zoom g2.1 U. Luckily it gave me the distortion i've been looking for long long time so I'm gonna record distorted parts from mike and amp, and clean stuff straight from focusrite.
Thank you!) You are the only one who explained how to use mic (with phantom power) with guitar at the same time. Thanks again!)
If you get a 2i4, it has a 10db pad.
Awesome video. Surprisingly this is one of only a few videos I have found that cover this specific topic.
Thanks a lot!
Your voice made me pregnant, and im a guy

That's the best description I've seen on the subject.
who the fuck gave this video the 72 thumbs down ? this is a great video. It explains things in total newbie form. Personally I knew all this stuff myself, but I thought this video was well planned and thought out. PS- the newer Scarlett's have a pad switch so you can ditch the DI box. Keep up the goods man.
I've shared this video with several people. Well done and simple for the uninitiated but understandable. Nice job.
perfect!!!
the speakers must be actives right??
Very few videos/articles on how to get a basic hardware setup to get a clean guitar to PC connection without spending a fortune. New subscriber. Thanks!
Never used an amp simulator and probably never will but that is a great video ;-)
2019 and still relevant, good job mate!.
Yup!
just bought the 2i2 2nd generation, doesnt require a di box anymore
Pegebei G. sounds fine here and no lag
Do you have active pickups? If I'm not mistaken, active pickups put out a line level signal, so you'd just need to flip the switch from instrument to line and it'd be fine. That's how it works on my 2i2, anyway.
this is the video that convinced me to use Amplitube and I cannot be happier!
Is that a Amiga 500 on the shelf behind you?
A500 or A1200?
In the 70's I recorded my music into a cassette player, a very simple method now the above maybe offers more options as to sound but wow what a complicated process...!
Scalloped frets?
Yup.
Steve, Thank you so much for making this video and for all the help you give to us all!
can you run just on headphones, no speakers?
sure, why not
overdriven77 beacose it isnt designed for that, and you can blast the speakers, or after a While it can start sounding nasty
Does anyone know if I could use my amp as a speaker by connecting the interface into the amps aux in?
Yes
Hey man, thanks for making this video so clear and concise. I've been researching exactly how to use an interface but most videos are vague and not 100% clear.
Positive Grid's BIAS is the best.
Yeah but also a little expensive ;)
Teun Music Productions Only $100? Not really that expensive compared to what you get.
Brett Bonikowski For a 15 year old, that's like a fortune

Very good job explaining this for people. Showed them how to do it on a budget. Great tutorial
This voice, its volume and compression level... is just too much for me to listen with pleasure.
Just bought the focus rite 2i2... And this video is exactly what I need...
Thanks a lot man!
Even in 2014 no one was using FireWire lmao
Hahaha when he said Core 2 Duo I almost died. I got my i7 4790K in 2014 and how is this dude recommending Core 2 and Athlon/Phenom??? And the whole x32 and 2 gb of RAM.
I don't want to be too harsh though. This is the greatest video of this kind I've ever seen. Made it so clear and straight forward.
