#Mythvisionpodcast introduced me to your channel and I really enjoy it. I have been obsessed with Indo-European history and archeogenetics for a long time. Anyway, I think anything revolving around a Bull being slain has to do with the Taurid meteor shower. Perhaps there was a time when it was very deadly and the killing of the Bull represents the meteor shower becoming less dangerous. Think of Gilgamesh killing the rampaging Bull of heaven. Keep up the good work.
Edit:. Also the heads of wheat coming out of its tail could be a time marker as we pass through the meteor shower during harvest time.

Saturnalia is from 17th until the 24th of December, and the following day (the 25th), there was a celebration of the Unconquered Sun. Personally, as a follower of the cvltvs deorvm, I don't believe it is a Mythraic celebration, because the cult to the sun itslelf was quite important during the late imperial era. Another thing to keep in mind is that during this date it was understood as the end of the apparent "death" of the sun during the solstice; the sun's apparent movement is close to or away from the horizon, being very close to it in winter, and far in summer. Because it seems like from the 21st to the 24th the sun does not change position, it was "crucified" (hence Jesus was resurrected on the third day, he himself took lots of solar atributes).

In one video I saw they said that Mithras was more popular with officers and Christianity with the rabble, so Titus and Domitian wanted to merge Mithraism and Christianity. By Chrisitanity I mean the Roman version, not the one the Jewish rebels of Jesus' family would have believed in. The Zaddokites, like James the Just. Nothing like Paul the Herodian.
The Nazoreans apparently put a zodiac in the entryway of their synagogues and there are passages in Josephus and Acts about a great famine, my ears perked up when Cregganford mentioned a drought. Queen Helen of Adiabene (a former Alexandrian puppet state) gave a fortune to the Jews to help alleviate suffering. All these tidbits are swirling around each other, never quite connecting clearly.

I've noticed in the past that some amount of Mithaic iconography seems to correspond to constellations. I've seen variants, but it seems like in Tauroctany Mithras is played by either Orion or Ophiuchus and the Bull is played by either Taurus or Scorpius. the dog may be either Canis or Lupus. it's like the variants may depend on season of year. not sure about the rest of the imagery but it looks like some other scenes and/or ranks have a stellar look.

Legionaries adopted Mithras for his association with war, and, as you noted, probably because he didn't have a political aspect. Legionaries were from whatever countries Rome conquered; having a common icon would serve to bond them into a dedicated body of...brothers, shall we say. Oath brothers. _E pluribus unum,_ and all that.

You need to apply, be initiated by elders, learn and adhere to arcane rituals like TPS reports, police anyone who questions tje rituals, only later get to learn how it really works, then you continue the rituals past the point of even believing in them, and finally rise to a position where you teach the rituals to bring new members in because WTH, you had to go through it so why not the new guy!

I think the slaying of the Bull is the representation of the slaying the Roman empire. The reason Mithras appealed to many Roman soldiers, is because the soldiers were the power hand of the Roman empire. To stop the Evil Roman empire, the Bull had to be slayed through the conversion of soldiers to the Good Side. The Bull also represents the lower Human brain which is Animalistic in nature. To rise above greed, desire and list, the Bull / the Beast inside had to be slayed or another Roman Empire would emerge. Also, when Rome was collapsing, the Empire created the Vatican and transferred its power into that organization which then created the “Papul Bull”, a system by which the Roman Catholic Church could administer rule through “official papers” and “birth certificates”. People bowed down to what was written on a piece of paper. On the papal bull, it says that all of the souls in the world belong to the Vatican and the Roman Pontiff has supreme control over the material world and is Governor of both Soul and body.

David Ulansey's The Origins of the Mithraic Mysteries: Cosmology and Salvation in the Ancient World (Oxford 1991) presents a compelling argument that the distinctive Mithras iconography symbolically portrays an ancient cosmic star map depicting the precession of the equinoxes from the Taurean to Piscean Age (roughly around 2000 BCE). Several videos of Ulansey decoding the symbology in fascinating detail are available on TH-cam. Ulansey's controversial theories, as well as competing hypotheses, are critically examined in Roger Beck's The Religion of the Mithras Cult in the Roman Empire (Oxford 2006). Those who seek deeper academic investigation into the esoteric meaning of mithraic tauroctony will find these books worthwhile.

There are still bullfights in different countries. This is a cultural ritual for these people. The Egyptians examined a bull's leg while dicapitating it after his exhausting fight. And they noticed it kept contracting so they assumed the bull must be immortal. They say the tale and testicles are linked. After a bullfight the tale goes to the bullfighter for consumption. It is like an afrodisiac and gives the one who consumes it fertility. The cult of Apis is an example of this ancient ritual. But when Egypt was taken over by the Romans, they slaugtered the king bull and renamed the deity Serapis. The Egyptian people of the cult never accepted this deity later on.
Leo the Lion is one of the earliest recognized constellations. The Mesopotamians are known to have documented the "lion" constellation. The Persians called it Ser or Shir; the Turks, Artan; the Syrians, Aryo; the Jewish, Arye; the Indians, Simha. These are all translated as “lion."
Hence the namechange from Apis to Ser-Apis with two kind of depictions.
Along with the snake bearer (the 13th constellation of the Babylonian calendar)
The month Nisan (summer stolsice and this 13th month Nisan) is when all great festivals of rebirth take place for a good harvest. In this month there is also the ritual killing of a bear whoem all the natives practice especially the Ainu, Sami, the ancient Berserker tribe and some north American native tribes. You see this ritual also take place in the movie Midsommar. The festival is called Akitu.

Interesting thing about this Ahrimaneaus... What do you suppose about the iconography of the serpent? I look at it as a hint, symbolically. An ancient anthromorphic counterpart of another pantheon that has the patronage of the serpent, is considered to be knowledgeable of good and evil, I think, as well as mastery over nature. I'm referring to the figure of Cernunnos, the Horned God/The Stag Man. The Hunter, as well. There's an extreme departure from his symbology and that of this Ahrimaneaus due to both of them having different heads, as well as the fact that Cernunnos has in some depictions been surrounded by a myriad of different animals, including predator ones. But it's interesting. I should look up Ahriman from his spiritual tradition as well, because if he's like anything from the Goetia demons, then there's specific domains that are associated with him.
Really good stuff! The Proto-Freemasons do intrigue me as a fascinating bunch.

The figure at the end is very reminiscent of the caduceus. The smaller symbol near the feat and the bird is almost like a double Rod of Asclepius too.
I doubt it relates, but I also see a similarity to Asherah. In that, you have a serpent intertwined around a body that has a lions head. The lion was also associated with Asherah, as you mentioned in a different video. Obviously, the major problem though is that it's males body, not a female. But still, I think it's interesting.

      Dear Elizabeth,
I’m very sorry to hear the heavy situation you’re in. I felt like responding to you, as I’m currently reading a book called “Mushrooms, Myth & Mithras. The drug cult that civilized Europe”, written by Carl Ruck, Albert Hoffman (whom discovered LSD) and Jose Celdrán.
The book an academic report basically which in essence describes Mithras and it’s close connection to mushrooms. Entheogenic, also known as psychedelic, mushrooms. To be exact, the Fly Agaric, or the 🍄 emoji, which literally is the Fly Agaric.
Reading your story, I could imagine that your son was reading such books. Which already shows a distinct intelligence your son has.
I could also imagine he experimented with psychedelics, perhaps even mushrooms.
Psychedelic experiences can be life changing, bringing above beautiful insights one can use to better their lives. These experiences can be extremely tough, intense to say the least, but filled with divine beauty… but equally deep fright and terror.
The ‘worst case scenario’ is that your son experienced such a deep negative experience and is in a psychosis. That he went so deep in his mind, he’s ‘stuck’ in that sense of reality.
Therefore I would be curious if your son has perhaps a known history of mental challenges, like bipolar or perhaps even a depression. People with depression often search for healing and psychedelics are very soon to be found. But it’s known academically that people with mental challenges, like being bipolar or schizophrenia, are more sensitive for psychosis after taking a psychedelic.
I would take his identification with Mithras as something “serious”, and basically ask about what he’s experiencing, but equally where he got his information from. Equally if he perhaps has taken mushrooms, which makes absolute sense for someone identifying with Mithras.
Use his identification as a source of “inspiration” on how to start a discussion with him and slowly try to bring him back to this reality. Even “if he is” the son of Mithras, we would still need him to be in this reality as well. Where his family is lovingly waiting for him.
That it’s oke to feel so connected to Mithras, as it was an actual person with a following, but that’s he’s still a person in this reality as well. All in the hope that he will get flashes of clarity, and that it’s oke to let go and come back to our reality.
I’m highly aware that this is a very sensitive and difficult topic, and by no means am I a trained psychologist. But I have seen some psychosis up close, and i believe that accepting the situation, starting a discussion and try to “help them land” is a more gentle and human approach than seducing with heavy medicine, in the hope he ‘might snap out of it’.
I hope the book would help to be a start. Equally Carl Ruck would be the absolute expert to focus on.
I wish you all the strength, courage and love in this heavy situation 🙏❤️

@@stefspijk Thank you so much for your kind comment, it means a lot to me and I will look for this book. When he is locked up I always feel so much better because he is safe and off the streets when he is locked up. He never really did to many street drugs, although he would if offered for free. His first love was, and is Cough Syrup. He extracts the DXM out of it and takes it.
He started the number counting about 11 years ago then one day he said he was the son of Satan but soon he switched over to Mithra. He really believes that he is going to "come into his power" and bring about the end of the world just as soon as he finishes all his task's he is required to fulfill before then. He sounds almost believable at times! He told me that one day when he was in Seattle he met the singer Bono. I guess he asked my son to carry a computer up the stairs into his house or motel room, then Bono told my son that he would write a book soon, (my son would) and that he,(bono) would like a signed copy! He asked me to please call Bono for him and ask him some weird questions or something, naturally I said I couldn't find his number! I do hope that someday someone can reach him, but when he is sober he is even more passionate about his Mithra status! Thank you again, and you have a good rest of the year,

Some of the following comments may be addressed in a subsequent video, but I am trying to work through videos in date order, as and when I find them and this is where I am.
The words ''killed'' or ''slayed'' are used frequently during the early part of the video before the use of ''sacrifice'' is introduced which then virtually disappears again. Is this because the iconography seems to elevate feasting above sacrifice?
Worship of cattle appears to be common among pastoral communities, usually involving a cow deity in earlier mythologies but being superseded by a bull in later ones. Perhaps part of the shift from female (fertility) oriented worship to male oriented (pastoralism)? The idea of sacrificing a bull = deity seems counter-intuitive, yet many sacred cows in the earliest mythologies are killed to provide material for the creation of order out of chaos, at which point the sacrifice of a sacred male proxy doesn't seem so outrageous?
What is the meaning of the snake in the iconography? Is it knowledge & wisdom as in many other mythological concepts, as part of the hidden knowledge of a Mystery cult?
Why does the dog have an erection? Is it just to indicate it's a dog rather than a bitch or is there a hunting or fertility aspect?
What star is indicated at the top of the various panels?
Could there be a connecting thread between the ravens of Sol, Odin, Edgar Allen Poe and the Tower of London? Are there any other raven connections in mythology?
The lion-headed man entwined with two serpents: looks like the Staff of Asclepius. Is there a connection between Leo and medicine? Between medicine and Mithras, eg military medicine, assuming Mithras IS an army oriented deity, as suggested?
Sol has rays (like Aten / Re / Alexander the Great) does this generalise to the nimbus / halo of angels & Christian saints?
These are just a few of the questions / connections this video throws up... can't wait for more!!!

No equivalent lion headed gods? You only have to look to Egypt for Sekhamet, who also had an association with the Sun God (Ra). One of her titles was, the Right Eye of Ra.

@@Crecganford there is also a further association of lion headed gods with cycles of time, or aeons as we might refer to them.
The god Aion from whence comes our tern aeon is then associated with time, and also Mithras.

Crecganford is the reliable channel on mythology which I was looking for. Thanks for the work. Could it be that the Vatican statue is out of context and Mithras in fact was looking at the sun - which we can not see because there is no visual context remaining? And what about the white dot on the pic of the birth of Mithras? Dotting genitalia and sexuality related topoi must be a neverending endeavour for anthropologists which are at the same time depraving the exhibits of much of their value.
Referring to the summer solstice, it is remarkable that in all depictions of Mithras his head and cap are exactly in the middle of the picture, sometimes accompanied by the according zodiac. This gives us a hint to the autumn equinox. Which, I think, was the original date of Jesus's birth before it was moved to late december.

Apart from the mystery about the actual content of Mithraism, it does seem strikingly similar to Christianity: both seem to be loosely based other, pre-existing religions by people in the Roman empire - Judaism morphs into Christianity, and some variety of (perhaps) Persian religion is adapted to become Mithraism. With Christianity, the most obvious changes were the dropping everything that made Judaism off-putting for gentiles: circumcision, dietary rules, and hatred of Roman invaders. I am no kind of expert, but it does seem to me at least possible that if Roman Mithraism was the product of a similar adaptation, the new religion might appear - from the remaining evidence - to have nothing in common with the original. I mean, imagine if all that remained of Christianity was a few drawings of fish and some hostile propaganda - would we be able to guess its links with Judaism?

Mystery cults were all the rage at the time. The jewish cult of christianity was one of the last. The shared trait is usually a god-man (and in one case a woman), miraculous deeds, an ordeal of this god-man, one story for the outsiders and a different one for the initiated, a communal meal for the followers. According to Dr Richard Carrier, if you apply the common traits of mystery cults to judaism, you can predict christianity.

The 4 animals being the the N , S , E , W of the processional great cycle , the 4 Gods used to hold the net of the Leviathan from the creation myth.

Mithras as we know is a sun deity. The bull though is entirely different. It is in fact a bow wave effect in the symbol of Islam the crescent moon is the horns of a bull and star is our present moon. Judgement day of Christian and Islamic tradition, Ragnarock already happened long ago
Mara Unduk tale of when earth had 2 moons. Mani the moon and the 2 children who traveled with it. The Zulu myth of 2 brothers who hollowed out the moon and rolled it across the heavens. The Hebrew word Sencherib which means "The moon god Sin replaced the 2 brothers"
Mara Unduk interestingly, if you take the 1st 3 letters Mar and the last 3 letters Duk, Combine the 2 you have Marduk.
The remaining 3 letters AUN means "moon" in Bukiyip. Reverse U and N and you have Anu father of the gods. Sin the moon god was also said to be the father of the gods. So there is clearly part of the Annunaki present.
2 ancient Arab words for the moon are in english "wanderer" "old one". The moon for a fact is older than the earth! It now becomes apparent the moon wandered the solar system and as it traveled around the sun another myth speaks. From Africa came a myth that the sun got into a fight with the moon. The sun threw mud at the moon and some stuck to it's face. The mud spoken of obviously is solar plasma from a sun flare. The face we see today is missing all it's volitile elements such as zinc from a high temperature event! Scientist's studied trinitites and moon rocks looking for their lose of volitile elements. And I believe the moons surface has a great deal of glassy remains.
The moon is the star of Bethlehem and the 3 wise men are the belt stars of Orion. You see Christ is also symbolized as the sun/son of god and also the sun/son of man worshipped long long ago.
The moon was responsible for massive flood if we take Gonggong seriously as it orbited and settled into orbit around the earth. Black hole sun as the moon headed toward earth growing bigger makes for interesting thoughts.
So the moon is indeed a serpent, it's tail a trail of rocky debris from the asteroid belt. It's Gonggong en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonggong (Gonggong is thought of as a dwarf planet which our moon clearly is being larger than Pluto) It''s the old serpent the devil in Revelations. It's the world serpent of Ragnarok Jormungandr

Some fascinating connections: BUT, are mythological connections made in anglicised script relevant to the languages from which they are translated? I have seen some fascinating numerology regarding the Great Pyramid based on multiples of its footprint in metres. The metre is a modern measurement, hardly relevant to a millennia-old monument that was undoubtedly constructed to something like the Imperial Cubit, longer than the standard cubit, but still considerably shorter than the metre.
You state as a ''fact'' that the Moon is older than the Earth but the latest science says the Moon was created FROM the Earth by a collision with a moon-sized planetoid during the Early Massive Bombardment. Thus every conclusion based on a wandering ''older'' Moon has to be suspect.
The heat generated by meteoric impacts creates glass from the silicates of normal planetary surfaces. Four billion years of impacts will create a lot of glassy surface, not from a single high temperature event.
We have to remember that myths and their elements had two functions: 1) to explain things, via gods & magic, that to humans of the time were otherwise unexplainable, and 2) to establish a religious / royal hierarchy that justified the elevation of priest-kings over mere mortals.

I’ve been looking into Miss Rios him and Mr. records for a while now in order to help solve some oddities of gaps between other existing mystery societies and fraternities such as freemasonry. I found some links through symbolism from ancient Rome, ancient Greece, the ancient Persian empire, going all the way back to the ancient FedEx and ancient Samarian and Babylonian deities. There are connections though I admit they are tenuous. The Lionhead figure I have always found to be fascinating and there are other aspects and meanings to some of the symbols contained within that image which I would like to discuss with you if you’re interested. They have to do with keeping secrets and a craft. Miss Reyes him is experiencing a rebirth in interest because it has been recently discovered that there are still small groups of these people practicing and meeting. It is in my opinion a dark and enigmatic secret fraternity

This opinion based on image of bull on map of the starry sky by Jan Hevelius, where the bull is depicted with Hyades and the Pleiades around the neck. As a first approximation, we can say that the Hyades and the Pleiades denote the Bacchantes, the constant companions of Dionysus. God Dionysus is known for being undecided about his gender. So, it turns out that Mithra tames Dionysus, and a scorpion takes part in this act, aiming at the genitals, a sign of gender, with which Dionysus has not decided who is he: male or female. But what function the scorpion performs in this act is not clear. This is why the scorpion puzzle is so important to understand.

at 18:30 you try to argue that Mithraism isnt persian by comparing it to Zoroastrianism. Doing so, you are ignoring thousands of years of Mithraic religion practice in Iran which was extremely different than Zoroastrianism. Look at all the median reliefs pre-Zoroastrianism, look at the parthian religion, look at the persian feudal houses, look at the iranian tribes in the Caucasus and the steps, all worship Mehr (mithra). Look at the tomb of cyrus and the related animal sacrifice. look at the mountain where Darius, Xerxes and many other persian kings are buried, its called the mountain of Mehr. Look at the early swastika sign, its called the Wheel of Mehr in Iran. Zoroastrianism didnt become a state religion until Ardashir (first Sassanian king) destroyed all the mithraic temples in Iran along with any txt remaining from the Parthians. One thing that always strikes me about Mithraism is that though it is often presented as a very solar-centric cult, the second highest level initiates are ruled by Sol, the sun god, but the highest level or grade is under the rule/protection of Saturn. Mithras is depicted receiving from Saturn the sword or dagger which he executed the bull with. In classical mythology Saturn rules Elysium, the afterlife where those chosen by the gods, the righteous and heroic dwell. Sol is also depicted kneeling before Mithras, reflecting this role as the secondary rather than the primary deity of the cult.

The cult of mithras is based on western indo European culture before they became distinct from one another especially the eastern bands, also mithras is staring out at his people and land in the statue of killing the bull who are both hungry and grateful for what he's doing for them.

Maybe mithras became the mystical core of Christianity
    The great alchemists
Freud purchased alot of serpent ornaments. Maybe he tapped into serpent possession cos he certainly had some lion to do after he first came out

I was going to email you this but I don't use Facebook or its ilk. I thought you might find this interesting. The lionhead man reminded me of the sumerian demon Pazazu(demon idol used at the beginning of The Exorcist film.). Iconography of the elements being held, wings and a snake coming up the leg/s. Ironically while searching for a suitable comparison I found a stele of Anu, ancient sky father and progenitor of the sumerian gods.... kneeling on and slaying a bull. www.wikiwand.com/en/Anu
"Anu briefly appears in the Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh, in which his daughter Ishtar (the East Semitic equivalent to Inanna) persuades him to give her the Bull of Heaven so that she may send it to attack Gilgamesh. The incident results in the death of Enkidu. In another legend, Anu summons the mortal hero Adapa before him for breaking the wing of the south wind. Anu orders for Adapa to be given the food and water of immortality, which Adapa refuses, having been warned beforehand by Enki that Anu will offer him the food and water of death. In ancient Hittite religion, Anu is a former ruler of the gods, who was overthrown by his son Kumarbi, who bit off his father's genitals and gave birth to the storm god Teshub. Teshub overthrew Kumarbi, avenged Anu's mutilation, and became the new king of the gods. This story was the later basis for the castration of Ouranos in Hesiod's Theogony."

I think that is Enkidu killing the bull of heaven in the image at wikiwand. I was reading The Roman Cult of Mithras by Manfred Claus today. He has a good chapter where he goes over the cult artwork. The artists had some leeway in details. For instance, the bull has been shown as white, black or brown. There were a lot of characters in the cult, it seems, and the person paying for the artwork could pick what he wanted included on his piece. The artists would try to pack as many scenes and characters in, as possible.

Once again I applaud your historical rigor but I take exception of your analysis.
You repeat the claim that there was no connection between eastern Mithraism and Roman Mithrasisim yet you admitt we have no idea of either branches theology and the basis for your statement seems to come from analysis of the art styles at eastern an western temples. The style of art is different granted but the iconography is exactly the same. It would be more accurate to say we don't know if they are connected.
You also claim that there was no connection between Jesus and Mithras... other than the fact that they were born in the same place in the same day ( also if you're at the church of the Holy Sepulchre don't ask about that hole in the floor Mithras came out of . They get a little pissy ). Also the three wise men part of the Christmas story was added to join the Mithras Legend to Jesus, as was the accepted date of Jesus' birth. You also mention the consuming of bread and wine in the Christian tradition, something well documented in Greco/ Roman theology but unheard of in Judaism until that moment... sounds like more stuff added on to make it familiar to the Roman converts to Christianity after Constantine... also you did not mention Mithrasisim suddenly became less popular across the Empire after the Conversion of Constantine.
These are just things that raise questions for me ... I'm no scholar just a hillbilly who has read too many book. Many of them contradicting the others.
Anyway thanks for the video, keep up the good work.
I look forward to learning from you and disagreeing with you in the future.
    Great content

I appreciate your comments, and perhaps I didn't emphasize enough certain aspects that may have cleared up some of your points. I do enjoy decent challenges, and I will do more on Mitra and Mithras soon (or that is the plan).
