Its based on the Odyssey where Odysseus, who scorned Poseidon, refusing to credit him for his good fortune. After many years of torment, Odysseus finally reconciles with Poseidon, like Everette in the movie. Real athiests wouldn't actually pray because they just don't believe in superstition.
@@josgretf2800 That's the point, there's like zero cases of atheists not breaking down in a fox hole. Pretty much every vet I've ever heard from has corroborated this. "There's no atheists in a foxhole" is a generally very true statement. You've clearly never suffered any severe hardships to think otherwise, just saying. You're right about Poseidon, though. Atheism is actually the death of intelligence, because Agnostics are at least scientifically open minded, whereas Atheists assert a hypothesis as a Law, unfoundedly, when it's not even a strong theory. To me, atheism is just a symptom of contrarianism because a lot of Churchtians make it hard to respect the idea of a higher power since they're often hypocrites. Faith is often based on direct experience, in contrast. Similar to Buddha having some kind of direct form of enlightenment, etc. Belief would be taking someone else's word for it. To me, only firsthand experience really validates anything like that. "Every being, regardless of time or space, attains harmony with heaven and earth alone." - O'sensei
“God exists because people who are scared out of their minds and willing to believe anything that could possibly save them no matter how little sense it makes” isn’t exactly a strong argument for the truth of religion. It’s an argument that people believe it out of fear and self interest.
I suppose it’s all a matter of perspective. My feeling is that The bonds of brotherhood regardless of race or religion is exactly what brings you close enough to the lord to see the miracles he works in your life. Despite the mythic references, there’s still tons of symbolism for The Gospel throughout. “The law is a human institution” is meant to say that no mortal can get in the way of Justice. Then as Ulysses gives his first sincere prayer begging for forgiveness, suddenly the massive flood comes and saves them from certain doom. The way I see it, that flood represents baptism. Which symbolizes the death of your sinful self, the washing away of your sins, and your rebirth as a new and better person. And since Ulysses rejected going to the water before, now the water came to him because Nothing can prevent The Lord from saving his children if they want to be saved. Church as an institution is not God, but it’s a tool to bring people closer to him so he can work in their lives. Some churches do it better than others and it’s just a sad fact of life that no church is immune to the mortal failings of the people who run them. I’m sorry for the bad experiences you’ve had with religion, but I just hope your life’s journey is full of hope and love. Because if it is then you’ll surely get to somewhere pleasant in the end.
As an addendum, I know the flood is foreshadowed earlier as something that the government was doing anyways, but the timing and circumstance is no less miraculous just because there’s a logical explanation.
