    Long Awaited Maiden! Just a heads up. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE MANUAL FOR ELEVATOR NEUTRAL LOCATION! IT'S WRONG! Use your eyes. We ended up with about 1/2" down on the leading edge of the elevator from the manual location for neutral. Thanks for watching!

    • @janmb
      @janmb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Probably at least partially caused by CG as well. Both the takeoff, the elevator neutral pos, the energy retention, all tells the tale of a significantly nose heavy setup.
      Awesome maiden anyway - well done. A what a gorgeous model it is 😁

      @Lozzie74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@janmb I agree. The CG looked way too far forward.

    • @rodgerhecht3623

      On the full scale when flaps are down there is a lot of up elevator mixed in. I flew a yellow air craft F-18 back in the glow days ....when i put the flaps down the plane nose dived and i didn't have any offset for flaps and the plane only had tailerons i was turning base and she went in. The flaps blanked the elevator.

    • @garrykennedy5484
      @garrykennedy5484 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rodgerhecht3623 But he needed a lot of up elevator in normal flight. It shouldn't have taken that long to rotate with a full flying stab. Nose heavy is better than tail heavy on a maiden though, so. Good deal. Ruff runway sucks also. Overall I call it a success. Fast landing due to nose heavy also, but it did great considering. I would be proud of that flight.

    • @fern6978
      @fern6978 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes! I think every F-18 I've flown ended up needing a far more aft cg and more neutral elevator to fly optimally. IDK why they're always manual SOOO nose heavy like that. Glad you got lift at least... That was close to disaster.

I did a maiden flight on a a new helicopter last weekend and it was my first flybarless helicopter i ever built, and it was very stressful thinking if I've done everything right, is the flybarless system setup correctly, etc. So i can appreciate the take off and landing.

    • @thelightersideofrc
      @thelightersideofrc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the maiden no flaps. The trim condition was separate on each setting so no time to re trim. The flaps require a significant amount of up elevator for compensation. just a rough number take off flaps about 10mm on leading edge of flaps. Full flaps about 20mm of compensation.

    You got her up, and you brought her home. Well done. On the takeoff, do you think it had a little negative AOA to cause it to stick longer? On the 1/8 F18E, we had to shim the retract down to get a more positive AOA to avoid the jump into the air, this is on grass too. Inboard rudders help as well on takeoff.

    For some reason RC F18's are always tough to maiden. Probably because they are so short coupled and have so much flap authority. And the forward CG just compounds the issue. When I heard 'that was full up elevator' I was thinking...yup that's a tough situation right there. At any rate that test pilot needs a medal. Getting that elevator trim dialed in with the different flap settings is the do or die moment on an F18. I would probably consider leaving full flap trim for the second flight. Great to see it worked out.

    • @thelightersideofrc
      @thelightersideofrc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Where was the throttle at most of the flight, it seemed pretty quick. I was thinking the landing was on the hot side as well, but I do the same on my maidens. Kind of like the big boys say, 5 knots for the wife, 5 knots for the kids and 5 knots... just because.

    It’s unfortunate how much the airplane leans while taxing. I guess the suspension is pretty soft to give you that scale looking trailing link suspension. The F16 seems to do the same thing. Great build!!!

    • @thelightersideofrc
      @thelightersideofrc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea it has since been changed a bit. That's one of the great things with the Skymaster Gear. You can modify air pressure but you can also modify oil weight. So if the air pressure is kept the same which controls the sag and you up the oil weight it doesn't react as fast and this helped the lean alot.

      Thanks for watching! Yea it's not far off from a carrier landing for sure. Fortunatley the gear on this plane is outstanding! It's basically a functional copy of the full scale. To put together a large twin like this it usually comes in around 25K USD.

    why no flaps for landing ?

    • @thelightersideofrc

      Just for the maiden as the flaps were setup on a separate flight mode so they would have needed to be trimmed out again.

    A question-The signal between the controller and this fighter jet-how far does this signal go?

    • @thelightersideofrc
      @thelightersideofrc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With our current radio system it's basically out of site. An actual distance would be based on many different variable inside the model and out.

    • @mapuc
      @mapuc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I presume your Controller gives you a warning when the plane gets to far away from the signal.
