    A great tip is do not rent the car for a few days and then pay parking fees...you can rent the car daily pick it up in the morning and return it in the evening if you leave at 7-8am and return it at 6-7pm and you save 40$ parking fee.. you can always rent it again tomorrow morning (make sure you are doing multiple reservations 1 for each day you want to rent the car) this can save you hundreds on parking fees...

      The only cheap rental I can find is from the airport, but obviously I can't go to airport every day to pick up and return the car. Do you have any tips for a cheap overnight parking in Waikiki near Hyatt Regency?

    Great content.🥰 Lived in Hawaii (Oahu) about 14 years. Anyway, way back in the mid 1990’s, we were on a family trip n one of my fam members n I were a victim of a SCAM. A guy was at the airport, gave us a very sad convincing story that he had a personal crisis, we felt really sry for him, we collected enough $$$ to pay for his one-way flight from one of the outer islands back to Honolulu n the airline ticket agent informed us that it was a huge SCAM. The others in our fam who refused to donate to him, laughed at us. I’ll NEVER forget how these evil people target kind, compassionate n vulnerable people to give up their hard earned $$$. Anyway, a major lesson learned, I very rarely give $$$ anymore as a result mostly bcuz rarely carry cash these days.
    Btw, I like the tip about that Surf hotel that has FREE parking n FREE coffee.
    Back in the day when I was married to a military guy, we almost always stayed at Hale Koa hotel (or at one of his relatives houses). Ty for sharing.🥰 Enjoyed it.💕

    The Aloha stadium swap meet was the first stop we made on our trip to Hawaii. It was sooo worth it. We got all our souvenirs there and a great plate lunch. We ended up going back to the swap meet later in the week. I didn’t know about the parking fees until I got to the hotel. Luckily there was a parking garage that charged way less right across the street and the hotel didn’t charge me if I didn’t park there overnight

The amount of times I would stop at a random food shack…man. I miss island life. Running lanaki pillbox hike with the boys. Watching the sun set behind the mountains. Going thru the h3 tunnel dry, and on the other side it’s raining. Man. I don’t miss the traffic or the cost of living. But dang. Hawaii is the prettiest place I’ve been. Hands down. Aloha, speaking from a local's viewpoint (I have worked in the industry 40 years), unless you are informing people about how it is illegal to climb "Stairway to Heaven" and you will get fined Don't mention these places. The residents hate when people trespass. Also the parking at the eastern beaches you mentioned, is horrible. Sandy's and many other beaches are very dangerous, look for a lifeguard or signs about water hazards. And yes Hawaii is a big tourist destination, keep a look out for thieves. And...Waikiki is one of the best beaches around, especially for familys and singles. Despite your feelings about the sand. Most of the sand is now pumped off the ocean floor and spread on the beaches. Yes there are hidden fees. Just like anyplace you go. Las Vegas for instance or California. OMG My trip to Disney World I ssoooo expencive!

    Jaycation there is also the Kona St car tow away rip off for parking. There are a number of clubs and bars in the area, such as Jazz Minds, and as you said parking can be expense or hard to find. If you park on Kona street and use the parking meter. Know 100% of the time if the meter expires there are tow trucks waiting that will immediately tow your car. Kona street is privately owned by Ala moana hotel and the towing companies have arrangements with them to tow any vehicle that has a expired meter 24/7. You will not get a parking ticket, you will get towed at a cost of about $250 plus cab fare out by the airport. Tourist get towed by the dozen on busy and late nights.

There are lots of places to eat on that street. The fees!! Saw a "deal" for $1990 for 10 days. Once I added those fees, NOT including daily parking, it turned to $2761, then parking on top!
    Stayed at Marriott last Feb,$45 daily parking, we stayed 3+ weeks, sometimes couldn't find a spot! The resort fees were a joke. We only slept there.
    Aloha stadium flea is great. Found my beach hat. My husband lived there in the 70's. His mom said if they didn't have it then you didn't need it.
    Staying at the North Shore this Feb. We put 1600+ miles on our rental car last time. We found awesome beaches that never had more than 3 other groups. Waikiki Beach was a big disappointment. Ate at Romys shrimp just about every day, will again! All local places other times. We come to hike, swim and eat. Looking forward to our trip this Feb. ❤

      Thanks for your insights. My husband and I are booked at the Marriott next week. I saw the $45 daily parking fee and decided to start doing some research which is why I am here reading comments. I"m thinking we should skip the car rental and try to get around on public transportation once we get to the hotel. How was the hotel itself? Frankly, we're lazy tourists. We will do some exploring but mostly hang out by the pool or the beach near the hotel.

    Been to Waikiki many times. Rent car one day at a time. Pick up morning, return at night. Public bus best for nearby areas, and even to visit Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor and the stadium swap meet for souvenirs etc. U can talk to locals on the bus etc. Be respectful and if you are a guy and bus full allow any standing women to sit if you see that. Is expensive in Waikiki to buy things but if you don’t care then it’s a convenience thing so pay then. I recommend going in the off season less crowds and calmer feel even in Waikiki. Mahalo.

    If you’re going to rent a car make sure all the tags are up to date the smaller companies especially personal rentals like TURO will rent you cars that don’t have up to date registration tags.
    (It’s illegal to drive with expired tags and you might get pulled over and ticketed)

    12 year Ewa Beach resident here, Never bring anything to the beach or leave in your car that you don't want to lose or have stolen. Seen tourists leave wallets on seats, towels, park table in pavilions etc, DSLR cameras on the dash, luggage in the bed of pick ups...
    Also, there is a scam in parking lots. Guys will kick your cars side panel or door when you are in a store, then approach you in the lot and point out someone dented it. They will happen to have a dent puller in their vehicle and offer to pull the dent for $50-100.

    Great tips for tourists and locals too. Waikiki is definitely a trap. Even for Kama'aina, who are offered discounts, doing a staycation is extremely expensive throughout the state. That's a good reason to visit the mainland.
    1:14 Dear tourists, that is Sandy Beach on the East side of the island. Don't go in the water there. I'm a local and I avoid the water. The break slams you back onto the shore and the undertow is crazy. Notice the sign that says "NO SWIMMING." Great for pictures, sunbathing and flying kites. Be safe.

    Born and raised on Oahu. But Waikiki is extremely dangerous now days as the raise of homeless and even thieves lurk around waikiki. Night time is even worse. There’s been people getting knifed down, shooting not too long ago, a lot of fights breaking out. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful place in the world and I will forever love Oahu, no where else compares I’d say BUT for tourist, be extremely safe. Even the locals get attacked so don’t assume you’re safe

      Oahu is beautiful. First visited in 2016 with family and had a great time. I did notice that walking during the day one or two streets off the beach front that there was homeless people:( Can't imagine how the insanity of the last few years helped people's financial situation. I'm heading off to Oahu again soon. Wished I could stay longer and see Kauia and Maui. Another time definitely

But the crime has gone up so much here, it’s ridiculous. I hope you enjoy your visit here and have a wonderful stay. But please be careful for thieves and what not if you stay in Waikiki. Ate breakfast around 9 am today at Wolfgang"s in Waikiki. You can get two eggs for $6 or a giant omlette for $20. No line and not busy at all. Kind of amazing for how good the food was. They also have some very expensive food. Maybe people are scared off by that.

I found it amusing as I will be making the VERY long trek over from Israel to Oahu and Maui in one month's time. First visit and really can't wait. Almost all beaches in Hawaii are public land. The exceptions are the ones on Military Bases. Specifically Bellows past the ID post and White Plains. And White Planes is only military for the rental equipment like surfboards and stuff, but the beach is public. The rest are on a base so you need base access to get to them. So if possible, just bring your own stuff vice paying for rentals. Also, Aulani will try to tell you that you can’t put chairs and umbrellas up at the Lagoons, which is false. Again, they don’t own the beach so you can bring them.

      partially true. the land owner owns up to the rocks. before ko'olina was built, those lagoons were not there. technically from the road to the rocks are private property. you can be kicked off the beach. if the security tells something, well they have the power to call HPD and have you removed from the property. the rocks and ocean is public. they have no poweronce your on the rocks. people need to be educated with facts. ko'olina is one of very few exceptions where the land is private and state,city & county and federal dont own the beach. the "lifeguards" when they are on duty are paid by the property owner. please if you don't know, don't speak.

    • @FpSNet
      @FpSNet ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yea_i_podagee_so_what I don't think that part about the lagoons is true; it has nothing to do with the rocks its with the water itself. The law states : The public has a right of access along the beaches and shorelines in the State situated below the “upper reaches of the wash of the waves.” depending on time of year/surf/tide the lagoons do develop waves, and are therefor are represented under HRS §§ 115-4, 115-5, Revised.

    • @yea_i_podagee_so_what
      @yea_i_podagee_so_what ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FpSNet yes but the lagoon is not part of that. the high water mark is at the rocks. I've had a DLNR officer tell me that its all gonna come down to what ever agency responds to a complaint tho. but i can guarantee you that if you tried to fish or spearfish in the lagoon, you will be cited. ive seen it numerous times 🤣 i was almost cited for using the lagoon "opening" to enter the water with a speargun but when i showed video of my speargun being unloaded and a protective cap on the tip of the shaft i was not cited.

As a kid in Punalu'u I used to not even bring slippers when I went surfing because of the risk of them getting taken - part of that was being so poor that the loss of a cheap pair of zori would be a major hit...
