NEW FLOORING RECOMMENDATION from someone in a trade.
    1. If your Hot Water Tank is less than 5 years old, shut off the water, hook up your garden hose to the tank drain at the bottom, and drain for half an hour or so before attempting to move it. Do this corner first, so you don't have any worries about scratching your new floors. An empty HWT weighs more than you might expect, and there could be sediment at the bottom of your tank depending on a few factors. Josh should tip the tank towards himself a little, then carefully "walk" it.
    2. Leave your hot water tank in place, cut the carpet in a square and install the new flooring up to the carpet remaining under the HWT. Save enough boards to install in the HWT corner when you replace the tank in a few years.
I love your videos, thank you for sharing your gardening/preserving/cooking adventures with us!

My neighbor has been growing dahlias for years in mid-Michigan with huge success. They are all in pots. He overwinters them in his garage and in the spring they go out on the driveway. They can barely fit their cars in but the flowers are spectacular. He's done this for about 20 years, and some are 6 feet tall. Every single year!

I use a couple standing fans that oscillate. My gramps taught me to use them because you don't necessarily want the 'wind' to be constant and only coming from one direction. I switch them around halfway through the day so they hit other shelves then switch them back to their original spos the next morning and repeat. I also vary between low and medium once the plants are a little bigger.

We’re looking forward to spring, and another FREE online training!
This one is shaping up to be extra special.
Because we’re covering a topic that almost all homesteaders (and pretty much everyone else!) wants to learn about, but most of us haven’t yet…
    I’m talking about…
    Beekeeping!
The free training happens this Thursday March 21, 2024 1 pm PST on the school of traditional skills website.

Becky, not sure if anyone has mentioned here yet or not, Luke just did a video about soils. He mentioned that amending your beds in fall do not help for spring. All the nutrients can get leached out over winter. Go check out the video. I think it was called something like 5 top soil mistakes. If that’s not it, just look at this recent uploads from this week. I learned a great deal from that one.

In a climate that freezes maybe not useful... but here in western europe ( oceanic influence) it’s best to put compost or manure in the fall. Before winter crops. Spring growing starts early feb, too. They need food but soil life is slow so they need a lot of fresh stuff.
Maybe that’s the confusion. Mi gardener is usa midwest i guess. Nothing grows during winter... his advice reflects that.

suggestion - you need to get a compost cycle started, at least 50% of your crops will compost down and then you can feed the soil with it, it closes the cycle and creates lower carbon but its a great micro and macro nutrient provider. Try Charles Dowding composting

  • @chelseajones4141
    @chelseajones4141 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

There's nothing like seed starting time 🌿😊 PS- tips with the soil blocking (from a horticulturist) 1- bottom water with a narrow necked water can directly into the tray. Watering overhead with a hose is too much disruptive pressure, especially for tiny seed and too easy to over water, and inconsistent coverage. Try something like a misto sprayer or basic spray bottle mister from at least 12 inches away (like hairspray) for keeping the surface moist (not wet) before germination. 2) You can use a clean makeup or paint brush to gently brush off sediment on your seedlings in the future. Too much water is the easiest way to lose seedlings. Happy planting 🌱✌️

While the desk, seed table is out of the grow room you could give it a spray job and refresh its paint job(and maybe change the colour for a lighter one???)

For a happy medium water sprinkler, may I suggest one of those two gallon pesticide sprayers, just for water or fertilized water, never to use with poisons. It makes a much finer gentler mist, and you can spray a lot with just a few pumps of the big handle instead of constantly pumping the little spray bottle.

I planted Dahlia tubers about 3 years ago, and every year I have forgotten to dig them up and luckily every year so far they have over wintered in the ground they are right next to the house so I figured the biomass of the heat coming off the house had been enough to keep them from freezing... they keep getting bigger every year. Hope yours are successful.

I also successfully overwintered 3 pepper plants. .I lost 3. Prune rather harshly. Knock off all garden soil and Transplant them into seed starting mix so no gnats and bugs! Then water occasionally and put in a window. They sort of go into stasis until you start to feed and water more.

Wow Becky, you are going to need a flower field. Have you looked at the final planting distance for the dahlia's? Save your used chicken bedding, it will be full of nitrogen that can be used as a mulch before you cover over your beds next autumn. Or, add it to your composting system and use the compost as a mulch. Plant legumes, harvest them and leave the root ball to rot away underground. Legumes harvest nitrogen from the atmosphere and fix it in their root nodules all ready to be available in the soil. In fact, leave all the roots to rot down within the soil.

Have you considered the three sisters companion planting for your corn this year? It’s where you have your beans climb up the corn as Support. Then you plant squash around the edges because deer do not like squash. The beans climbing up the corn makes it stronger with wind. You could do it in two of your beds across from each other to give the corn plenty of air to cross pollinate. How the indigenous people grew these… The beans will also feed corn tons of nitrogen.

Hi Becky, I also wish you'd planted the French tarragon. It really does have a better flavour. Maybe you could just get some seeds and do a taste comparison. You are very talented. You're a great cooking teacher and a very green fingered gardener. By the way, I also love my air fryer.

Becky, I use the vermiculite to cover the seeds instead of dirt or I use perlite. This helps with algae and fungus flies.

Hello Becky! I enjoy all of your content. I like watching you cook and bake. I don't garden, but I enjoy all of that content as well. If it hasn't been mentioned, rent a piano mover to move your bench/cabinet. It's been a useful tool for us when we have large heavy things to move. Can't wait to see all your hard work pay off in your garden this year!

Hello Becky. My mom said the best way for plant very fine seeds is a salt shaker if the holes are small and few holes, But even better is take a old pill bottle (wash)(sterilized) poke the size of holes you desire, and the seed can be left and stored in them for 1 yr. My mom was a seasoned gardener here in Alberta Canada, for over 50+ years. She passed in 2022 from CHF and is a peace now if Christ. I have tried to write most info down. But she is greatly missed by so many.
Let me know if that works if you try it.

Seeds will germinate with the vermiculite on them. I think the light reflects off the flakes. So anytime you have a seed that says barely cover or needs light to germinate vermiculite is the go to.

In the Netherlands vermiculite and perlite are used to insulate the chimney of a fireplace (open hearth?). I buy big bags at a construction shop like Lowe's. Huge price difference! I mix vermiculite through soil for sowing and potting up and on top to avoid the little black flies (mosquitoes)

Becky, If you’ve ever had steak with bernaise sauce - you’ve had Tarragon. It is a perennial in my So Ca garden. It dies down completely in winter and comes back a little bigger each year. I love it! It doesn’t dry all that well but it might do well in your freeze- dryer: I’ve also been growing stevia for years - also a perennial for me. My harvest from one plant lasts the year, sweetening my teas and lemonade.

Becky, you made a great choice for more soil volume with the dahlia seeds! Last year was my first time starting dahlias from seeds and they form tubers pretty quickly even starting in 72 cell trays like yours. I had to hold mine a little too long last year before I planted them out and the sides of my 72 cells were pushed out and bursting!

Hey Becky My Mom grows daliahs and every fall she gets the bulb out, shakes a bit of mud off them and stores them in paper bags in a cool room. Plants them out come spring and repeats the process in the fall. … She regrew the same ones year after year, your grow room might be perfect if it’s not overly warm out there the winters

Becky, something to note- some nitrients do not move in the soil. Some do. Nitrogen is one that moves & can be washed away with rain, so it fluctuates a lot... so thats the one nutrient i do t stress about too much, & i judt make sire to do what you did & add some blood meal at the beginni g & middle of the season.
