NEW FLOORING RECOMMENDATION from someone in a trade.
    1. If your Hot Water Tank is less than 5 years old, shut off the water, hook up your garden hose to the tank drain at the bottom, and drain for half an hour or so before attempting to move it. Do this corner first, so you don't have any worries about scratching your new floors. An empty HWT weighs more than you might expect, and there could be sediment at the bottom of your tank depending on a few factors. Josh should tip the tank towards himself a little, then carefully "walk" it.
    2. Leave your hot water tank in place, cut the carpet in a square and install the new flooring up to the carpet remaining under the HWT. Save enough boards to install in the HWT corner when you replace the tank in a few years.
I love your videos, thank you for sharing your gardening/preserving/cooking adventures with us!

I use a couple standing fans that oscillate. My gramps taught me to use them because you don't necessarily want the 'wind' to be constant and only coming from one direction. I switch them around halfway through the day so they hit other shelves then switch them back to their original spos the next morning and repeat. I also vary between low and medium once the plants are a little bigger.

Becky, not sure if anyone has mentioned here yet or not, Luke just did a video about soils. He mentioned that amending your beds in fall do not help for spring. All the nutrients can get leached out over winter. Go check out the video. I think it was called something like 5 top soil mistakes. If that’s not it, just look at this recent uploads from this week. I learned a great deal from that one.

In a climate that freezes maybe not useful... but here in western europe ( oceanic influence) it’s best to put compost or manure in the fall. Before winter crops. Spring growing starts early feb, too. They need food but soil life is slow so they need a lot of fresh stuff.
Maybe that’s the confusion. Mi gardener is usa midwest i guess. Nothing grows during winter... his advice reflects that.

suggestion - you need to get a compost cycle started, at least 50% of your crops will compost down and then you can feed the soil with it, it closes the cycle and creates lower carbon but its a great micro and macro nutrient provider. Try Charles Dowding composting

Next winter you should cover your beds with clover or another nitrogen fixer and see if it helps, I've done this with my mother's potato bed this winter.
While the desk, seed table is out of the grow room you could give it a spray job and refresh its paint job(and maybe change the colour for a lighter one???)

It takes a few hours for us to pull, cut and clean off all the dahlia tubers but they're a great addition to the garden. Butterflies and pollinators love them!! We have multiplied over the last few years from a tray of ahout 20 starts. so we probably have well over 100 tubers.😂.

  • @chelseajones4141
    @chelseajones4141 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

There's nothing like seed starting time 🌿😊 PS- tips with the soil blocking (from a horticulturist) 1- bottom water with a narrow necked water can directly into the tray. Watering overhead with a hose is too much disruptive pressure, especially for tiny seed and too easy to over water, and inconsistent coverage. Try something like a misto sprayer or basic spray bottle mister from at least 12 inches away (like hairspray) for keeping the surface moist (not wet) before germination. 2) You can use a clean makeup or paint brush to gently brush off sediment on your seedlings in the future. Too much water is the easiest way to lose seedlings. Happy planting 🌱✌️

For a happy medium water sprinkler, may I suggest one of those two gallon pesticide sprayers, just for water or fertilized water, never to use with poisons. It makes a much finer gentler mist, and you can spray a lot with just a few pumps of the big handle instead of constantly pumping the little spray bottle.

Wow Becky, you are going to need a flower field. Have you looked at the final planting distance for the dahlia's? Save your used chicken bedding, it will be full of nitrogen that can be used as a mulch before you cover over your beds next autumn. Or, add it to your composting system and use the compost as a mulch. Plant legumes, harvest them and leave the root ball to rot away underground. Legumes harvest nitrogen from the atmosphere and fix it in their root nodules all ready to be available in the soil. In fact, leave all the roots to rot down within the soil.

I started my dahlia collection by seeds because the tubers were so costly! I was so surprised that at the end of the season my plants had extensive tubers for me to winter over (in my basement) I now have an abundance that I share with my friends and neighbors.

Becky, how about you use some furniture sliders to move the desk in your seed room. Or we use to put a blanket under the legs to pull the furniture. I love your videos. I want to try to have part of a garden this year.

Hi Becky, you might want to change any of the cling wrap that you used on the trays with mold and algae, as to not contaminate a future tray. Can't wait to see your garden. ❤️

Just a suggestion...if you use trays instead of soil blocks, you can bottom water easier and you won't have algae from over watering.

    Hey there,
Winter is coming to an end… And at the School of Traditional Skills, that means one thing…
We’re looking forward to spring, and another FREE online training!
This one is shaping up to be extra special.
Because we’re covering a topic that almost all homesteaders (and pretty much everyone else!) wants to learn about, but most of us haven’t yet…
    I’m talking about…
    Beekeeping!
The free training happens this Thursday March 21, 2024 1 pm PST on the school of traditional skills website.
I thought of you and Josh Becky when I received this information.
    Enjoy

As a senior I have found it harder to move a lot of things here on our homestead. Most drawer slides will allow you to pop out the drawers, making the item lighter. We've been doing this and installing industrial strength wheel casters . It increases the height of the cabinet, but this has been another plus for me, making a better work height. Someday my children will thank me for being able to roll my junk to the curb.

Becky, you made a great choice for more soil volume with the dahlia seeds! Last year was my first time starting dahlias from seeds and they form tubers pretty quickly even starting in 72 cell trays like yours. I had to hold mine a little too long last year before I planted them out and the sides of my 72 cells were pushed out and bursting!

On my to-do list this evening was washing and disinfecting a bunch of my seed starting equipment that got away from me last year and I was delighted to see the perfect video posted to have on while I washed and scrubbed. I was even more delighted when this video was literally the *perfect* length for the task. I was rinsing out my sink and drying my hands during the sign off! Excellent video as always, and thanks for always virtually keeping me company while I do boring tasks like wash and disinfect seed trays! lol :)

I planted florets bees choice last year. Like you I have never planted a dahlia anything! Every single seed I started grew and grew huge? Over 5ft tall. There were soooo many flowers on each one. I live in Southern California so I left the tubers in the ground. I can’t wait to see if they come up. I also saved the seeds. If I wasn’t about to go on a long cruise I would be starting those! I love your videos!!!!!

I always start my seeds early as I’m able. And I make sure my flats are strong and sturdy- as I’ve got limited indoor light space- when they “graduate” I put them outside every day and inside at night.
I also successfully overwintered 3 pepper plants. .I lost 3. Prune rather harshly. Knock off all garden soil and Transplant them into seed starting mix so no gnats and bugs! Then water occasionally and put in a window. They sort of go into stasis until you start to feed and water more.

I am so excited to see the dahlia seed progress! I never considered doing that! I only have one in my yard, which has come back (I leave it in the ground) again and again for maybe 15 years (I’m near PDX). Tarragon is an herb I hope you love…it’s great with eggs, fish & chicken and probably more, but that’s what I use it for. Yay for seed starting! 🌸

Becky, you’re going to love how easy Dahlias are to grow from seed! Last year, my first year, I grew a Dahlia mix from Johnny’s. This year I’m starting Floret’s Bee’s Choice and they started germinating in 2 days! My plan is to keep my favorite Dahlias year after year to propagate and plant in various spots in my garden beds! I’m excited to see how they do for you!🌸🌼
