One year my dad had a bumper crop of tomatoes. I don’t know what variety planted but he had some huge tomatoes. 1 slice covered a slice of bread perfectly. He said the trick to his bumper crop was a friend of his brought him a load of chicken poo. I was over to his house one day and he was fixing him a sandwich for lunch. It was tomato and peanut butter. It totally grossed me out until he made me try it. OMG it was delicious. He said store bought tomatoes weren’t that good it had to be homegrown tomatoes. I laughed so hard at him but the combination of tomatoes and peanut butter was so good. I haven’t eaten that in years and just thinking about it brings a smile to my face. Miss you Dad and your crazy sandwich combinations 😂😂😂

You could also donate your unwanted seeds to a school that has a gardening program. My students and I garden in our huge raised beds in our courtyard on campus. We would love it if we had seeds donated to us, so I am sure a teacher who works with the kiddos and gardens would love the donation of unwanted seeds.

Becky, the difference between the San Marzano 1&2 is that the San Marzano 2 is more resistant to virticillian. They make a wonderful both Marinara sauce and tomato paste because less seeds& water. I use to help my upstairs 80 yr old Italian neighbor when I was 6-9 years old and saw how she made both the Marinara sauce and tomato paste. I remember she did simply the best olive oil & little sea salt in the tomato paste and when I helped her she'd make it in an outsider wood burning brick oven in the yard. The results were just stupendously delicious. I'm drooling just thinking about it. I do a secret extra step and still do both the Marinara and paste in her honor and memory.

The all-purpose, juicy tomatoes make wonderful tomato juice. The juice can be boiled down to make sauce, eaten out-of-hand, or sliced on sandwiches. The juice is best! Big Boy and Early Girl both are good for that.
The old fashioned slicing tomatoes are bigger, but I can't remember the name of them. Maybe beef-heart?

Long time watcher here….One tip I do for proofing yeast dough, steam a measuring cup of water in the microwave after 5-8 minutes push it in the corner of your microwave put your dough covered with a towel and shut the door. If you get some plastic dome covers for your starting trays, they will germinate faster. Plus, the domes are tall enough to not contact the plants. The domes retain moisture like a mini greenhouse.

Now I'm retired with extensive back problems. That also gives me nerve pain in my legs, along with muscle spasms. I tell my grown kids to get help when lifting anything heavy. No matter how strong you are, your back can only take so much. I would love to plant some tomatoes this year. I have to pot them in big pots because I just can't get up and down too easily. So like the image you look at on your phone is in English. It's pretty cool! You can also snap a picture, and it will Google things similar/related. You can also use it to take a pic of a document and then it lets you copy and paste the words into a note on your phone or wherever you need it. So like say you hand wrote a recipe, it would take a pic and notice your handwriting and make it able to be copied so you can paste it wherever online. Just some tips I thought might help you day to day! I use it all the time

Hello Becky from a very wet and grey England. I missed the soap making when did you do that ??? For my birthday in January my husband built me two poly tunnels and hip high beds because I need to use a chair sometimes. It is a game changer for me. I have one set up for fruits and the other for veg. I grow my tomatoes in the green house in grow bags. It's easier for me to manage. For the first time EVER I managed to get hold of some seeds for Tomato Black Beauty. Yep BLACK TOMATOES. It’s the darkest tomato in the world with skin packed with anthocyanin (the same antioxidant in blueberries). They are delicious. I've just finished planting Garlic, Garden Peas, Broad Beans, Potatoes 3 different varieties this year. Radish Carrots, Parsnips Brussel sprouts. With more to come. Started on the fruits today until the heavens opened yet again. This channel is wonderful it leaves my brain in peace and happy. Thank You Becky

Did you make cold process soap? If so, you never want to contaminate your food supplies with those materials! It’s a big safety concern. It turns in to soap but the lye and other chemicals are not safe until after the curing process. I have separate supplies for my soap making. Even my scale I use to make soap is not the same I use for food.

Hi Becky! Wanted to mention to you that you will get sweet potato slips that already include little root tendrils relatively quickly if you lay your whole sweet potato horizontally in potting soil. The slips start growing quite rapidly, much much faster than using the toothpicks with potato partially submerged in water. Have watched a couple of gardening shows on TH-cam that have experimented with both ways of producing slips & both gardeners got slips growing much quicker planting the potatoes in soil than using the water method. I've personally tried it too & I had slips growing all over the place in a very short amount of time. Thanks & good luck with them! God Bless you & your family always!!!❤

I love the Cherokee purple! I planted them for the first time last year and they were absolutely my favorite. But I noticed it didn’t produce a lot of tomatoes which I was sad about. I also had the brandy wine hated those. Those were like I can’t even explain the middle of those but to me not enjoyable. But you might have better like with them. Maybe I did something for them to turn out the way they did.

For my sweet potatoes I did them in water and in potting mix like a side by side experiment. Laying them on their side in potting mix under grow lights and a heat mat has been amazing! I have so many slips. It's crazy. The one sitting in water still doesn't have any slips at all. Maybe next year you can try putting them in your soil under your grow lights.

Botanical Interests always color codes their seeds in the blends or mixed seed packets so you can figure out what you're planting if you want to split them up. For that Brandywine Tomato, the pinkish seeds are the red tomatoes, and the yellow tomatoes are the natural color. I think it's a cool idea. I love that they do that.

    Hey Becky!
So excited to see your seed starting project for this year! We used to eat fresh produce from our Amboy garden all year long, so seeding time was always fun. I'd like you to do a little experiment for me, and see if you get the same results we did. Pick a variety of winter squash (or pumpkin) you are familiar with, and start it as you normally would indoors, for transplanting out whenever you usually do. On the day you transplant, sow the seed of the same variety directly in your bed, 5-6 feet away, so that you can you can feed an water them equally. By mid-summer, you should have a clear winner in terms of plant size and vigor, and ultimately in pounds of squash at harvest. Hope you give it a try, God bless!
