Very Nice job, my wifes birthday today, I have left it late but I will see what I can do with a piece of apple I have been hanging onto. If it turns out anything like yours I will be very please just hope she is,,,, got to stop leaving things to last min I think, Once again FANTASTIC box, finial sets it off very nice
Very nice little box Mike. England rugby I will not even go there. The wife keeps telling me its only a game. I just smile through the tears. LOL. Thanks again Mike and take care. David
Hi Dave, we were all beginners once, and the only way to improve is practice, practice, practice, and learn by your mistakes, of which I promise you I have made many. Enjoy your turning Cheers Mike
Hello Mike, I really enjoyed watching your video, I have owned a lathe for a few years and did mostly pens but had to stop for a couple years but now I want to turn more than pens and I find videos like yours very helpful. Thanks for helping out beginners like myself. The box is beautiful and I plan on turning similar ones for my wife and daughter. Cheers from Canada
Now I know how to sharpen my tools, thanks mike. I want you to start turning pens, so I can watch those videos. My first attempts at doing a bowl were terrible and it broke off my lathe and hit me in three places. That did it for me, Capt. Eddie suggested I try pens till I get experience , then go back to bowls. I have done 55 pens and I love it , its the damned SKEW that scares the hell out of me. Maybe if I see you rounding a pen with a Skew I will get it . Thanks Tommy
Greetings! Enjoyed watching your video... turning at light speed! Interesting project, loved the way the shavings came flying off, sharp tools make such a difference. Cool looking shop, well laid out. Thanx for sharing this! Mike
Beautiful, Mike!! The box, that is. Don't want you getting the wrong idea. ;-) Keep 'em coming, Mike. I'm enjoying your videos very much. Thanks, .....Gord
Hi Jim, glad you like the video. Sanding sealer is used to raise the grain, and seal the wood. You buy it, but I thin mine down with a thinners, as it dries quicker. If you have the time, watch my video called "A Simple Wax Finish", it goes into detail about the mix ratio etc.. Thanks for the support. Take care Mike
Hi Jimbo, I am trying different things, to try and get a happy medium of tutorial and seeing the piece take shape, without becoming too boring, and not being too long. Your comments have been noted, and I'll try and get it right next time. Thanks for your support. Take care Mike
Very nice "Dinky Little Box". I must say you're quite confident to make the finial first -- then compound the confidence by gluing it to the lid before finishing the bottom. Hmmm... Alan Stratton
Beauty! I'd never considered putting a finial on a box like that before, but it works really well. Really nice piece of sycamore. BTW, did you know you had adopted Carl's "catchphrase!" lol
Hi Tommy, my pleasure mate. I am ashamed to say that I have never turned a pen! I will no doubt get into it in the future, but I still have so much to try and learn about the type of turnings I do at the moment. I quite often round square blanks with a skew, there are some good videos on TH-cam that should get you started. Take care Mike
your demonstration was so easy to watch better than most dvd demos but if you could mention wood sizes it would make things much better enjoyed watching you work
Thank you Malcolm, and you make a very valid point regarding sizes, I will ensure I state the sizes on future videos. Appreciate your input. Take care Mike
Thanks Brendon .I use a 3:1 mix of Chestnut Cellulose Sanding Sealer to Chestnut Cellulose Thinners. No hard and fast rule, I just find this mix works OK for me. Take care Mike
Your videos are so helpful as well as being interesting, thank you. Can you tell me please whether meths or white spirit can be used instead of cellulose thinner in your sanding sealer mix? Thanks again
Really nice little box One that I must try to emulate buddy, erm Will pass on the Rugby...As a staunch England fan but then admire all six nations teams My father in law was Welsh and he always insisted we visit during 6 nations England V Wales... modesty stops me from mentionng Rugby World Cup winners LOL.. Must admit 2013 Wales were the team to beat and truly trounced Englan..
Hey Mike I got given a lathe lately with a pretty new chuck but I have a lot of trouble with the piece I'am turning coming off centre so i keep having to re cut the piece to remove the wobble. I place a line on the wood and the chuck to keep them aligned but even with them aligned it still moves. I would be appreciated if you gave me some suggestions.
Super box Mike. That is really good work. Question please, what's your sanding sealer mix? I've just run out of Chestnut Cellulose Sealers that I thin 2:1 with thinners but I was wondering if there's a better mix before I buy more. Thanks, Brendan.
Thank you Dan. The lathe is a new acquisition from Axminster, the AT1628VS, and it's a great lathe, and yes quiet! In fairness England are building.......tee hee. Cheers Mike

Great work. I don't follow your rugby but got a kick out of you rubbing it in. Really nice vid fast through the slow bits makes it easer to watch.
Sycamore is some beautiful wood and you really gave it some character. Thanks for sharing
Very nice little box Mike. England rugby I will not even go there. The wife keeps telling me its only a game. I just smile through the tears. LOL.
Thanks again Mike and take care.

Right smart little box, Mike. The shape and finial set it apart quite nicely.
