    Many thanks for the video Calin that’s exactly what I was looking for.
    Currently all my video work is for social media and all my clients want everything vertical. Until now I have been using a Zhiyun Weebill with an L bracket and the stabilization gave a lot of problems. I wanted to upgrade to a gimbal that would allow me to record vertically in the same way as I would horizontally. I just ordered a Ronin R3S and this adapter that you have presented to us. What’s the difference between using the vertical mount VS using the portrait mood with the gimbal

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      honestly it just gives you more control. when you're in portrait mode, you don't have control of the joystick, you have to hold it in a kind of awkward way, etc...
      Using the vertical mount you basically get the full experience of using it normally, except in vertical video.

    I wonder if this will solve my issue with the eye piece hitting the SC2 gimbal. I have a huge tamron 15-30 2.8 and I have to slide the camera all the way back to balace regularly. I cant double tap mode and get to vertical mode because the roll up hits the eye piece. Tried a bunch of counter weights etc. nothing works.

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t believe that it works on the SC2 from what it lists on the website.

  • @41vids

    What about using a cage on the camera, and screwing it on the side? Is this better solution and worth it?

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  ปีที่แล้ว

      A cage has the same issue as an L-Bracket. Your balance will be naturally off. IMO I think this will strain your gimbal motors more. You can definitely feel the difference balancing with a cage/L-Bracket vs this R vertical mount. I’d go with the Mount personally or buy the DJI RS3 Mini which has a built in vertical setup you can switch to.

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is literally the same thing as an L-bracket, which I talk about how bad the center of balance is.
      As someone who shot a TON of short-form videos for clients last year, this will make your life more difficult than using the vertical mount.

    • @dlcworld
      @dlcworld 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@calincharles you are absolutely right. In my case I used Dji RS2 + Nikon Z6 in the cage. As for me balance was ideal. The main advantage of this scheme that I’m talking about is that it allows you to very quickly change the setup from horizontal to vertical and back. We're talking about speed here. If you shoot in vertical format all the time, it is better to use a Dji product.

    • @calincharles

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I demonstrated flashlight mode (vertical mode) in the video if you watched. The downside is you can’t control the camera to the same degree. Like you have no control of the joystick.
      But it’s a totally great option if you don’t want to buy the vertical Mount or buy the RS3 mini that just dropped which has a way to do what this Mount does.

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a solution and I used it for years. The balance isn’t as good, I can guarantee that. I’ve done it both ways now and I’m confident the R Mount will put less strain on the motors, even with “excellent” balance readings.
      But at the end of the day, everyone should do what they’d like. I recommend this option.

    • @broadwayphotovideo
      @broadwayphotovideo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@calincharles there’s no such thing as “balance isn’t as good”. Either it is balanced or it isn’t. It’s a heavier payload but if it’s nowhere near the gimbal’s max payload like with my ronin-s, it doesn’t matter. I didn’t want to mess with using workarounds for vertical video, so I bought a dji rs3 mini which has a vertical mount system.

    Why wouldn't you just shoot normal landscape in 4k which has a vertical resolution of 2160px? You only need 1920 vertical for social phone media.

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well think of it this way, if you’re shooting landscape and moving around a lot, you a) need to be far enough back so when you crop in you’re not too close to your subject, and b) need to mentally try and figure out your composition has most cameras don’t have markers you can project to see where the 1080x1920 section would be that you’d be using.
      Filming vertical allows you to compose in body, be close to your subject, and honestly just create much better vertical work. I’ve seen people use cropped in 4k landscape footage repurposed for phone and 99% of the time it looks awful and 100% of the time, you can tell they ripped it from landscape.
      For still videos like this one for instance, I 100% would say shooting landscape and cropping is acceptable and you’re not needing to compose, have dynamic moving shots, etc…
