The Edge said that when he developed the riff & progression for where the streets have no name, his goal was to try put together the ultimate U2 live song. In the end, that is U2's most iconic, recognized and anticipated moment in their setlist. Apparently they had at least one opportunity to srsly monetize that song by allowing the rights to be commercialized to a very popular brand (iirc may have been along the lines of microsoft.)
Having said all that, as much as I love U2 and especially the Edge, there is zero doubt in my mind that U2, perhaps even unintentionally, totally copied Charlie's brilliant riff for the foundation of what is universally recognized as their most potent live song (personally, I think live version of Bad is their best moment on stage.) No doubt in my mind. Just listen to them side by side and compare the timing of the releases, understanding that U2 openly admits their fondness for Simple Minds, Big Country and the Alarm. You'd have to be tone deaf to not acknowledge the cutting similarity of the two riffs.

I think if you are guitarist starting off you should study this entire album and learn how to play all the songs. The guitarist covers so many styles of playing in this live concert album and the effects he creates and uses are incredible for just one musician. Learn how to play this entire live album on your guitar and you will have reached a serious level. For the guitarist to perform so many things live required serious taught beforehand. A magnificent piece of live work for the whole band and the singer.

DAMN......DAMN.......All I can say.......... Loved it when he left the stage and that stagehand sailed in there with him. The crowd would have "taken him away......." One of if not THE finest bands of the eighties. I was in my early twenties then but didn't know they made this kind of music. Only followed them on the radio. Wish I had payed more attention to them. I am paying attention now!

During that tour or that period they where the best live band in the world - unbelievably good musicans being in incredible form. Seen them in 1998, still great but there is no comparison to that tour. So glad there's 'Live in the City of Lights', what a great album, what an important contemporary document! Looking forward to my next opportunity to see them, hopefully somewhere in summertime ;)

So what exactly is this song about? I can get it or the final verse involves a boy and a girl who fancy each other dying in a car crash, but not quit sure about the rest "Boy I believe in you"? Is that meant to be form his dad? I assume the stuff about Ethiopia and Lebanon (both of which had giant civil wars at the time, like Syria today) is meant to show how despite reading about tragedy far away it can happen at home just as easily?
