checking the date on this show. I saw them a week or two earlier in Vancouver (final date of a North American tour). Mindblowing show. Missing from this is the truly superb (and extended) version of New Gold Dream that wrapped up the evening.
He was never the most technical of bass players, but he was very distinctive and an integral part of the Minds' sound. I think they were significantly depleted when he left.
@@beds139 only a coverband with the original singer and guitarist. This here was the best line up ever. Without Mick, Mel and Derek they lost their signature sound. Mick was the heart and soul with brilliant ideas. The biggest loss of all nearly 30 members.
This is back in an era where bands had to be able to play, technology was just coming into the era of good production better microphone better everything but still no auto-tune or pro tools, nothing that you could get away with faking it with. That's why there's so many bands from that era with songs that to this day are still iconic because they just simply had to be able to play, Derek Forbes was an insanely good bass player.
This is without a doubt their best and without Derek on bass and Mick they're your standard stadium boring rock band. 1979-1984 was in my opinion the greatest years Simple Minds had.
It's my turn to weigh in. This is Simple Minds at it's very best. Nowadays it's just Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill trying to recapture their original form. People trying to compare this band to U2 isn't fair, because these guys started 2 albums ahead of them! Simple Minds has their own level of Being able to capture their imaginations of the listeners and if you were lucky enough to see them live then you had to have felt the energy between the band and the Crowd dancing and singing their asses off! Beautiful! I wish that I could have been there!
@@badmonkey2222 One definitely could tell after he was out. But I'm glad and greatful for what he gave us, togeather with the others, who were all excellent in their own way. But for me.. no Derek, no Simple Minds.

And did Jim really call Mick “the best cheek bones in history”?? Lol! ❤ I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking that 😉😅
The American, the band in full control of every note as they rampage through it, the connection with the audience from barrier to back row..... Any kid watching this would want to pick up an instrument and form a band. What a life journey they have been on. "Anything is possible!"
incredible bass playing...hes a machine. Locked in the groove like nothing else and driving the whole thing forward. I mean theyre all great but he really stands out here....Excellent quality footage and sound all-round really
Amazing concert but what a mind blowing version of The American. Simple Minds at their best and with, in my opinion, the best lineup. Thanks for the upload 👍
Mc Neil seemed not only to have 3 hands for all the parts he played , he was clever in his sounddesign , giving this ' excalibur castles in the myst' vibe to their songs , for strongest evidence live is rockpalast 82 switching hands from jupiter 4 to obxa to minikorg or all at the same time , i think he is one of the very few that could pull this of with great timing and sound live
Just found this video. I’ve been a fan since I first discovered the band late 70s. Having watched them perform live down the years, and certainly compared to so many of their contemporaries and modern acts, watching this reminds me that the Minds most outstanding quality is that they have 100% commitment to GIVING EVERYTHING live. 💥
This is incredible. A band performing live and at their very best. The song arrangements. The band energy. The crowd reaction. All fantastic. And in those days Jim wore trousers that weren't far too tight.
You would think Simple Minds have the audience in their hands but it looks like to me the audience have the Minds in their hands!, what a great crowd they were from the day's when things were far more organic and people weren't obsessed with taking snaps on their i phones etc and observed the on stage goings on as if they were sat zombie like in front of their TV's back at home instead of wanting to be a part of something special, and this gig by the feel of it was something quite special. Great to watch and hear. Simple Minds were up for it and the audience were as well, pure magic.
permaveg I can't add anything to that, no need to. One thing is we were younger in those days and I'm not sure I'd last as long now. Also you see Jim taking a bit of a breather during one of the songs. Even he was pushing himself to the limit. Pure dead brilliant!! See ya pal.
I enjoyed that gig and especially The American in the crowd a few meters from stage. Great show! One of the best concerts in life! Afterwards I was so exhausted that I couldn't follow Joe cocker who was playing after SM.
Oh my god! Listening back to this gig with the headphones bring this great sound back in head!! Derek is a magnificent player! How that bass rules! 💎💙🌀
That bassline running through their rendition of Promised you a miracle is intoxicating. The drumming is phenomenonal and then you have Burchill and MacNeil insert their collective geniuses and of course throughout you have Kerr providing a sense of majesty and mischief (at once faithful and playful with the lyrics and the song's intent
***** Insightful thoughts to say the least Jonathon. Like them! This wee concert is infectious. Just gets deep inside of you for some reason or for the reasons you just pointed out. Take care and all the best.
What a great gig in Dortmund at that time ! They never disappointed their fans there. A reunion for the 30 years band anniversary failed after a few moments - what a pity that these guys (Jimmy, Charlie, Mel & Mick, Derek) weren't able to reunite once again ! There will be a day when it is too late to do...hope it will be the other way round as I want to see their willingness and ability to go for an extremely desire of their fans - guys, you owe this to us ! Don't be late !
there is no other band in the world that gives me so much good energy than Simple Minds.. wish I could have been here, (but I wasn't born yet ;) .. But now I am there.. thanks!
Hi there! It is a special concert and I'm glad you get so much enjoyment and positive energy from it. I too wish I could have been there but the Barrowland '84 was brilliant to be at. Bye for now 'youngster' and thank you!
This is by far my favourite Simple Minds gig footage on youtube. I loved 82-90, Brings back many memories of my schooldays in the 80's, Im so glad i lived my teen years in this wonderful Im hard pushed to single one act out in todays pile of garbage that gets commercialised today. For me personally, music died at the turn of the millenium. Wont see the likes of anything like the 80's again.
Agree with all comments re bassmaster Forbes. Mick so agile across the keys as well. I know a lot's been 'analyzed' re Mel's contributions, but I rate him as integral to SM's sound and affect - no matter the circumstances/reasons for his departure - his contributions were a necessity to this band's DNA. An American who 1rst heard you as a High schooler in 10th grade in '79 - you remain a piece of my DNA. Keep on, keepin' on.
I wish that Simple Minds would have had some Concerts in Cincinnati Ohio in the 80's. I wonder why they didn't? All the MTV Bands came and performed in or near Cincinnati Ohio. I used to work for CBS Records in Cincinnati in the early 80's and I went to a lot of Concerts. I didn't know back then that Simple Minds would have turned out to be my favorite band! I've seen a lot of Bands in Concert and these guys have been my favorite band since 2015, because of TH-cam videos! Thank you for sharing this Great Performance. Thanks to TH-cam I can Relive Concerts that I wasn't able to see in person! I'm 62 now, and these guys make me feel like I'm in my 20's again!
I was there! It was a 'home game' for the Minds as the British forces still had their barracks in Westphalia. There were also tears of homesickness in the audience, heartbreaking. We were all Scots that night!
Just watched the video of them playing Pinkpop the year before this. The boys made a real leap forward in the way they filled big stages and worked big crowds: such supreme confidence! I'm sure fans are split on what SM's golden period was, and some purists may see this as the beginning of the end, but you can't take away the fact they were a world class act and had learnt their craft the hard way. Big love for SM. Happy, happy memories.
80 Minds..Top Minds...this is one of my favourites,their best concerts...Jim so energetic...the intervenience with the German crowd..best line up..this is gold! ❤❤🎵🎶🎤🎸🎹🥁🔝

The best band in the world at this point. Breathtaking performance galvanised by a hypnotised audience. The dream team of Jim, Charlie, Mel, Mick & Derek giving it large to an adoring arena. SM at their peak - they've never sounded better and Derek always fills their sound out in a way no other bassist ever has.
