    Thanks for being such a humble person Devin. I'm 25 and have wanted to be a filmmaker since age 11. Went through a lot of struggles over the years in my personal life, but it's people like you that share your passion so well, and that inspires me to keep pushing forward. Making my first attempt at a feature film next spring.

    Love the freedom you're giving us to request more insight into your way of life. Personally, I want as much candid footage as you're willing to provide. Discussing things like sponsorships, travel, what you personally enjoy and see when you get to travel to all of these amazing places, and how you bond with the people that you work with. Just the kinds of things I want to see. Keep it up; you're doing hard well, and maintaining a strong community along the way.

    So to condense it all down. If your just starting out, and budget isn't an issue. These are the cameras I personally would suggest, in order:
    1. Canon 5D Mark III
    2. Panasonic GH4
    3. GoPro 4
    Why not the a7s?

    • @JAGVisualsEst2014
      @JAGVisualsEst2014 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the a7s is such a sick camera, but since its mirrorless, you get ugly jello warping when you move the camera quickly

    • @ShaoVideoProduction
      @ShaoVideoProduction 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JGtheSKAT3R Only a bit more than with the 5d.

    • @TechTechReviews
      @TechTechReviews 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JGtheSKAT3R The GH4 is also mirrorless. The jello on the A7s is because of the sensor read speed in 4K readout. It's just not that fast. It's not because it's mirrorless though. Also, it's very rarely noticeable. Granted though, action scenes could be a problem (but then just stick it in APSC mode and jello = gone!)

    • @JAGVisualsEst2014
      @JAGVisualsEst2014 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thats pretty cool, i know almost nothing about the a7s. Ive only used it once at a wedding i shot a while back. amazing what that little package can do

    • @ericlopesbr
      @ericlopesbr 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JGtheSKAT3R There's absolutely no relation between Rolling Shutter and the camera being a mirrorless. In fact, every regular DSLR becomes a mirrorless when filming.

  • @zuzkarory

    Devin, can you please do a few IN DEPTH tutorials on best glidecam practices, including, your preferred settings (drop time, weight, etc.) I've seen some videos saying that a "no drop time" approach is actually usable to get even stabler footage (but it needs to be quite heavy) Also, some more in depth techniques of how to hold, how to pan and tilt, how to pull off certain moves. THIS WOULD BE MASSIVELY APPRECIATED BY A LOT OF US! Thanks, Rory

    Devin, this video was great as always. Your blog post was very informative and I strongly agree about the gopro, for the price you can get amazing 4k shots where other cameras can't. Right out of the box you have a great platform for shooting that can do underwater footage stock which looks incredible. The versatility of the camera is amazing with numerous mounts and accesories I highly suggest you take a look at the ribcage system. Where you can modify the camera to accept lenses! Which drastically improves the footage making it a very good camera. Thanks for this contribution to the filmmaking community and I hope to see more videos soon!

  • @Ablumz
    @Ablumz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hey Devin, I have a tutorial recommendation. I Have a Glidecam hd 2000 that I've been using with my Canon 6d for the past 2 and a half years, I'd just like to know how you make your footage so smooth. I've watched hundreds of tutorials and I've got it perfectly balanced, but it still looks a little vertically bumpy after running with it for more than five seconds. How long do you usually make cuts with the glidecam? I've tried to walk like a pigeon and mimic your walking technique, I don't know what else I can do? Is the best way always just to slow down the footage from 60 to 30 fps? Also I would absolutely love to know what colour grading techniques you use because your footage is always so beautifully graded.

      @Mayormayor47 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im no master like Devin by any means, but some tips: 1) Having a heavier camera helps. This does not mean add weight to the bottom of your glidecam because that will affect your left and right shifting/movement. 2) If you are right handed, hold the handle with your right hand, but with your left, use your thumb and 1 or 2 fingers right below the gimbal/bearing to keep it as gentle and smooth as possible

  • @Mayormayor47
    @Mayormayor47 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just wanted to say Devin, you are a true inspiration and one lucky guy. You get to do what you love every day of your life and get to go and see these stunning places around the world. I am 15 and live in a small town in Colorado, and ever since I saw your first video, I have wanted become a professional photographer and cinematographer. I would love to do what you do. I would love it if you did a post on your blog about lenses. What lenses you use and would recommend for advanced and beginner photographers with dslr's. I do have one question though. When you record your videos, they always seem to be in focus, far and near. How do you create such a short depth of field to the point where almost everything is in focus in the frame?
    Thanks

      +devingraham Sup DST. Quick question. I'm shooting on a Glidecam with a Canon 70D 60p, 125s, F4.0, ISO 100, with a 18-35mm F/1.8 lens. I'll be shooting at a well lit indoor event with lots of people. My concern is focus. I'm a one man band so I don't have anyone to pull focus. What focus setting should I use on my camera when using a Glidecam (Higher Aperture, Manual focus to infinity, Auto Focus, Continuous Auto Focus with Face Detection, etc.)? Thanks for the feedback.

    He Devin, i dont know if you have though of this but i run a red MX on a glidecam all the time. I bought a v mount battery and use it as my counter balance and run a cord to the epic to power it. This allows me to cut down weight a ton and be able to run for 2 hours with my bricks. I dont run a side handel with this rig.

    Great that you start out this series. I'll think about what I can suggest you to make tutorials about since I can't cover everything too.
    I guess you don't have much time so you can't make the videos more comprehensive and informative since it would be much more time consuming.
    But it would be nice if you would have mentioned what focal lengths your lens has with which you usually shoot on the gildecam with, but also mentioning, that many of your shots are actually slowed down from 60fps to 30 so it looks much more steady (and sometimes even 120fps --> 30?).

    Excellent. I am trying hard to step up my game on my survival channel here, and the glide cam IMHO should do the trick. It seems that my channel has a lot of how to and informative to it, but it needs more art. Monday I'll have the glidecam so we'll see! How to run this stuff helps people like me that didn't go to film school. My channel is a hobby so anything you can give me helps. Thank you for your time. I understand how much of it goes into making films. It's ridiculous.

    Hi Devin, I was wondering if you had any idea on when they might release this new Glidecam and if it had a name yet? I'm hired to use the Glidecam for short films, weddings, and other videos often. Side note, your videos have helped me gain technique on how to stabilize the camera in different conditions with the best possible outcome, so they are much appreciated. Thanks!

    I was just wondering... It seems incredible to me that you can get such a smooth shot while simply walking forward. I know (although i have never used one) the glide cam helps massively with this but to what extent does Devin stabilise the footage in post?

    I love that! Your blog it's AMAZING!
    devingraham If I have Nikon system for photography (and small camera from Sony, very small - Handycam) but now I want to shoot video what should I do? Sell all system and go to Canon (better option to shot video) or stay at Nikon and try focus on CONTENT?
    Sorry Devin for this technical question, but I think answer from first hand it's the best.

    This wasn't really a "tips" video. You showed us absolutely noting about how to use it. I don't blame you though. Your insane Glidecam skills are sort of your trade secret!

      Devin Graham When I saw ''Glidecam Tips' I got really exited. But this video doesn't show anything. I mean you could've shown how to balance it correctly.
      How to work with the counterweights. How you maintain focus on a subject or at least some more in-depth of how to use it correctly in different situations.

      BCO Video Yeah he gave some hints, but it wasn't really a 'Tips' video. I've been asking and waiting for a in-depth glide cam tutorial by Devin for ages. I hope there will be a full tutorial guide by him and not a vlog.

      I want trying to knock you Devin. I'm a huge fan! It's just, as a glidecam owner myself, I know from experience that's there's a lot to using the thing. How to balance, how to hold, how to walk, and a myriad of other things. You're shots are always PERFECT. That doesn't just happen. You employ a lot of technique which you didn't demonstrate in the video. Id live to see a more complete video showing how you mastered the device.

    Do you slow down your footage in post? If so, do you do it by filming at 60 FPS and then conforming to a 24 fps timeline?
    Love you videos, especially the nature ones!

    Love the behind the scenes. Was wondering how you achieve the look, shutter speed mainly and what stabilizer you use to help even out the frame. I feel like shooting everything at 60fps helps with some shake as well when you slow it down, is this true?
