      I was going to buy a Ronin too, but after watching Devin's glidecam stuff I've decided I'm going to buy a glidecam instead. So much more value for what you pay for compares to the ronin, and no batteries!

      Im trying to decide between the Glidecam and one of those one handed gimbals

    • @CrazyAmazingDesigns
      @CrazyAmazingDesigns 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is my comment about the handheld Gimbals. I have been using a Ronin-M for a couple years now and LOVE it. With that said the thing is pretty heavy, Especially after using it as a multi camera, handling it for an hour or 2-3 show. I however have no experience with the hand held gimbals I am just concerned they would get to heavy to hold your DSLR on one with one hand. I have a DJI Osmo for my iPhone and its pretty cool. -Nathan Robb

    • @ChaoticMatters
      @ChaoticMatters 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crazy Amazing Designs well I'm pretty sure it's not nearly as heavy as the ronin. You can also put them down without running to where the stand is. I think with the one handed gimbals I might be able to pull focus without buying a focus system cause I can have the other hand on the lens. On the downside you don't have much room to put a monitor. My atomos is probably too heavy

      i think both are great. I use both for different things. basically for me it's if you plan to slow mo use a gimbal. if you plan to playback full speed use a steadicam

    I just scored a Devin Graham Signature Series Glidecam on e-Bay for $192.00 + shipping. OK it was a Sunday night on a 3 day holiday weekend. It would have gone for much, much more at a better time. No, I won't sell it. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I tried a cheap unit for about 1 week before I sent it back. I never could get it to balance well w/ my Nikon D5300. Thanks.

    I resonated a lot with what you said about the glidecam holding more of the 'human' element to the shots. It's put the pin on exactly what I couldn't figure out what I didn't like about motorised gimbals, the 'digital' look to the shots!

  • @codyrap95
    @codyrap95 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    People who fangirl Glidecam so much over electronic gimbals need to understand a thing: THEY ARE DIFFERENT TOOLS. Nobody says that a gimbal is better over a GC just because it is more expensive. They are different tools for different jobs. A good filmmaker does not underestimate or overestimate a tool based on price or popular belief, but learns to use each for a specific purpose. Everybody is looking for a confirmation that a GC is just as good, or better than an electronic gimbal and they don't need to spend extra. You can calm down, it's worse for some things and better for others (as the video points very well about robotic but smoother movement). Great video, keep it up!

    I bought a gimbal because I wanted to use an 85mm @f1.4. I also needed a wireless follow focus. I like the usability of the Glidecam. you can get move movements out of the Glidecam that is very hard with an electronic gimbal.

  • @baileybeltramo1780
    @baileybeltramo1780 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think I've heard you acknowledge this problem in a different video... but my limited experience with a glidecam has been that it does not stand up well in high winds. I'm totally down with the idea of capturing organic movement and am really interested in investing more time into working with glidecams, but I was just curious if you, Devin, or anyone else had developed techniques/methods to combat that. Because it seems like once you get the technique down (and the wind-blowing aside) the glidecam is the swiss army knife of stabilizing rigs.

    Please go trough the topic of overall camera weight and how that affect stabilization and if you need to add any extra "dead" weight on top if you use a light camera?
    Also what drop time do you use?
    Hope you have a great day!
    Regards

    • @Ben-fq1lj
      @Ben-fq1lj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "2 seconds" - parker walbeck said in a live video when I asked him the same question. Fyi he helped film with devin for a while, so I would consider his advice close to what devin probably taught him. I find that 2 seconds works really well for me.
      Also, I own a sony a7sii and I would say that unless the camera/lens weight doesn't meet the minimum requirements, you don't have to add more weight necessarily unless you've removed all other variables that might be giving you bad results.

    • @sharphillfilms9438
      @sharphillfilms9438 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot! Seen on guy on youtube called "Paul Web" explaining that close to NO drop time is what gives best results, but it's sooo hard if the weight distribution changes even so slightly..th-cam.com/video/hIpbM2lix9w/w-d-xo.html
      Anyway it's a tradeoff from smoothness and functionality i guess ;)
      Have a good day!

    • @Ben-fq1lj
      @Ben-fq1lj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I saw his video on that, I personally don't know how he gets smooth shots with a drop time like that. Its great for very slow shots, but fast shots forget it

    • @ghostbaum
      @ghostbaum 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the heavier your overall setup the steadier it will be. that's why in movies steadicams are practically like gimbals cuz they have a really heavy setup.

    • @Ben-fq1lj
      @Ben-fq1lj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But they use arms too most of the time. Most people can't lift and hold that much weight unless they're a massive body builder.
      In wind heavier loads help, but the problem with the no drop time like Parker Walbeck said is that you have to have really good hand tapping/control of the gimbal, otherwise it sways too easily when doing a moving pan/circle shot.

  • @donotfollow9529
    @donotfollow9529 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Technically you can 3d track one of devinsupertramp's clips, and apply the same exact camera movement to a motion control rig. The point is, in my opinion, that it's not the camera movement that gives the Glidecam (or even the human element of using one), its character. Rather it's the ability to instinctively track and frame a subject.
    Using a brushless gimble that either locks off an axis or has predetermined delay to start turning - at a predetermined speed (barring any predetermined acceleration ramps), means that if you feel while shooting, that your composition is off you can't instinctively change it. (Sutch a setup is well suited for highly choreographed shots.)
    Which brings us back to the Steadicam, you can frame on the fly (no pun intended) and always be where you want to be. All the while having the camera smooth. That is the character of the Glidecam, one which isn't easily emulated by other platforms. I'm not saying that camera shake doesn't add character, just that isn't the reason that the Steadicam/Glidecam should be used. (But yes it does give it a look.)
    Again this is just my opinion, other people are entitled to theirs. For all I know, I'm wrong their right. Maybe we both are?
    Can you give techniques for holding the Glidecam, walking, running, on smooth and rough terrain, upside down? In short (long?) how you get the shot, and not so much on what you get it with. Thanks

      probably due to a slow apature or he had his hands on the lens, just guessing

    • @SpektrikMusic
      @SpektrikMusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The wider the lens the wider the depth of field is, the more narrower the more shallow it is. The slower the aperture (f8+) the wider the depth of field the faster the aperture the shallower. So for daytime action stuff I'm guessing g he would be shooting with a wide lens at f8+ so the depth of field would be larger and they won't be out of focus when they move away from the camera.

    Hi Devin, I was inspired by you to start some "devin-like-glidecam-travel-filmmaking" and improved with the glidecam a lot already. There are still some points I would love to know from a person with so much experience:
    - how do you set up your droptime for different shots? or always the same?
    - do you rebalance when you zoom? it doesn't look like it in the video. do you compensate the off-balance with your off hand then?
    - in my videos I often see "the start" of the panning for example. how to avoid it?
    - how to handle the correct alignment of the weights to camera-line in the terrain, where you have no horizontal plane? is it very bad?
    Thank you in advance.

    I agree in most of the points! But you have a 1D X II... Did you ever tried out Dual Pixel autofocus? I have a 5D IV and it’s amazing! It can handle focus at 1.4 and it’s just so great! Canon is famous for it’s AF... But I have to agree: on the RED you are usually shoot on [...] But impressing! I mean at 8K/4K you really see when something is a little bit out of focus. In the day time, I suggest closing it to f16 or even smaller to keep everything in focus. Just try it out. Takes a lot of practice and time and he even mentions how his shots get out of focus so he cuts it.

      Considering he uses the 11-24 (non-filter) and no nd slides on his setup (for red) it's pretty safe to assume hes shooting around f16 or smaller while doing action videos out doors under the sun. Also judging by how everything is in focus in the examples in the video, it probably is f16 or smaller.

      Thank you for your analysis. I agree with this one, and the background in his shot are not so blurry, (just a little "bokeh") to confirm that he is probably shooting maybe between f16 and f22. But i like him to answer to this question.

      In the video he says all his lenses are f/4 except for the 16-35 which could be f/2.8. I'd like to see him do same thing at f/1.4, f/4 isn't hard to keep things in focus at all.

    The beautiful shots you can get with a glidecam. Amazing!!! I need to buy yours soon.
    How do manage to balance your camera so quickly? Is there a certain way to do it or has it just come to you with 10 years of experience? Would be very helpful to know.

    Last time I tried to skateboard I fell & busted my entire ass just tryin to kick/push a couple feet. Then this jerk comes along at 2:54 & makes it look easy lol. Seriously, that was insane. Wonder how many takes he did before he nailed that.

    You should make a video on running with the glidecam

    i mean there's tons of movies where steadicams are just as perfect as gimbals. glidecams are just lighter that's why they wobble more

    How do you pan up and down easily with the GlideCam? Do you just push the bottom to tilt the whole contraption?
    Great video, and thank you for making this.

      There aren't any electronics on a glidecam. U control the it with ur non-dominant hand and since the system is nearly perfectly balanced, panning and tilting isn't very hard.

    Do you prefer to balace the glidecam by extending the 'stem' or by adding weights to the bottom?
    Thanks for the video! :)

    Curious what your camera settings were at in the room you shot all those examples in. F stop and shutter speed as those effect the look of the stabilized image as well. It was great meeting you at NAB last week and I'm really excited to start getting into glidecam with all your tips!

    Ok good video but can you show us how you actually keep focus when you’re glidecaming and you have to adjust your focus, because I know I’ve seen before that you have to make adjustments with one hand. i.e. when you’re shooting wedding videos

    Why do you have the glidecam balanced so that the weights are pointing towards and away from you, not horizontally so that you can have the glidecam closer to you?
