  • BIGGEST Filmmaking Secret Revealed! POLARIZERS!
    We use B+W circular polarizer. They get rid of the reflections from water, windows, and most plants/green things. We use them whenever the sun is out. When buying a polarizer make sure to get the right size for the lens that you own. I feel if your going to spend the money and buy an expensive lens, it's worth spending the extra money to buy a polarizer of the same quality to match your lens, otherwise your lens won't be as clear. Plan on spending about 130 dollars US for one.

    Here's the drones I would get in order of my favorite. We use the DJI Inspire 1 for our videos.

    -I would get two controllers if possible to have the ability to have someone control the camera as well.
    DJI Phantom 4: http:amzn.to/1RY2AEm
    3DR Solo:

    If you have a very small budget and don't have enough to buy a big/medium drone, this is an awesome option to learn how to fly for under $100.00. They have a small camera on them, I would use them not for the camera but strictly to learn how to fly.

    I use Hoya Polarizer, they are great as well.
    I recommend to buy the size your biggest lens has and then buy step-up rings for the other lenses.

    I used to have a cheap $8 Bower Polarizer. And one time while I was shooting a wedding, I put it on my lens, to try it out. 15 minutes after I put it on, I left the camera on the tripod, while I was searching for something in my bag. And one kid accidentally pushed over my camera and it fell down on a hard ground, lens first. The Polarizer was completely destroyed, I had problems removing it from the lens. But once I removed it, the lens was 100% fine :)

    Thanks for the great video Devin! It means a lot that you'd spend the time to make this and share what you've learned. Do you use polarizers on your inspire 1? I use an ND8 most of the time since I can't control aperture on my Phantom 3 Pro. If I had an Inspire with an X5 that has aperture control then I would definitely look into polarizers. Not having remote control over the effect of the polarizer makes it seem like it's much less effective too though. I love my GH4 with speedbooster, but one of the main drawbacks is putting a variable ND or polarizer causes ugly green flares when pointing anywhere near a light source like the sun

    Hey, love the content and your videos! Would like to just point out that it doesn't actually filter out wavelengths or frequencies of lights, but rather directions. Normally light comes in at all angles (unpolarized), but when it hits a surface like the top of a lake, the light that's bounced back is mostly one direction.
    The polarizer has a bunch of slits in a certain direction so as you turn it around you only let one 'direction' of light through, so you can do things like get rid of the sun's glare off the land which is polarized in one direction. Also very useful for filming subjects through windows, as you can cut through the glare and reflections as they're polarized a certain angle.
    This's how many computer monitors work as well; hold a polarizing filter up to your computer screen or monitor and you can rotate to a certain angle where you can't see the light any more. You can also remove the polarizing film that's in most monitors and grab some glasses with polarized lenses to have a screen that looks completely white to everyone but you, but I digress.

    Devin will it be a good idea to buy a step up ring set (52, 58, 62, 67, 72 and 77 to 82mm) so you just buy a 82mm filter and you can use it on your other lenses that have less diameter ??

    • @TheEditingResource
      @TheEditingResource 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's generally better to have different size filters for different lenses so you don't have to fiddle with adapters and don't have to worry about switching everything whenever you want to switch lenses. Sometimes you'll find your lenses having matching diameters anyways and you can buy 2 filters that work quickly with 4 lenses.

    Which polarizers do you recommend for the Phantom 4 drone?

  • @ThePhliphip
    @ThePhliphip 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The technical side:
    A polarizer filters monopolarized light. This means it many filters reflactions from every non-metallic surface like water or glass. It also filters the reflaction of the sky on leaves which makes them seem more green. Furthermore it filters the light which is reflected by particles in the sky making the sky seem more blue.
    You need to buy a circular polarizer as non-circular polarizers can mess with your autofocus and whitebalance.
    You can stack a polarizer with any other polarizer. you can stack to polarizers to make get an adjustable "sunglass" for your camera (for shooting photography in snow for example).

    Do polarizers limit your freedom when it comes to color grading? I noticed that in most of your examples it appears to be very saturated and contrasty. It looks great, however, if you are planning on doing some heavy grading would you recommend just using a strong ND?

    • @lovesvensson

      I think he just has a slight speech impediment.

      Yes, I don't mean to make fun of it. I just thought it was interesting that it was backwards. A speech-language pathologist could tell him to try to switch them, since he is clearly capable of both.

    Devin, do you use ND filters to get the shutter speed you want?

    usually you want to buy one for the biggest diameter lens you have and use step up rings to us it on your smaller lenses

    You might forgot a super common filter in in cinematography, a diffusion filter like tiffen pro mist. used nearly in every commercial.

    Is it ok to leave it on while filming at night to protect the lens? Doesn't adversely affect the shot?
    Cheers, great channel 👍

    Would make sense to get 82mm filters and get additional step up rings. That way you are able to use one filter on every lens you got ;)

    I bought an ND filter for my 50mm 1.4 to be abble to open in 1.4.
    If I want to open in 1.4 with a Polarizer, is it possible too?

    Hey Devin, these videos are amazing!
    In the future, would you be able to make a video on whether going to film school is worth it, and how to make contacts within the film world?
    thanks!
