    I've been using my glidecam for 6 years now. Even though I use a gimbal on most shoots these days as we do a lot of low angle shots where I got to have the horizon straight at all times, i always bring my glidecam just in case. It's just more reliable. 🎥🎥💪💪

    Your price comparison is biased. For an Arri Alexa, a Ronin 2 Steadicam counterpart would cost you more, upwards of $10,000. Also, the "bad" gimbal footage used in the comparison was almost entirely user-error; footage is not the best way to compare these two as you must have equally competent operators. Comparing your "best" Steadicam work to your friend's "worst" gimbal work is an unfair and inaccurate differentiation.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Although I agree with some points of this video, there are two things that weren't thought out:
    1. Adorama sells Ronin S Essentials Kit for $389, which makes it cheaper than Glidecam (even the full Ronin S version is $559, not $800)
    2. The gimbal footage in this video was really bad and all those jitters were completely user's fault. It was like making a video why gimbals are better and then showing footage from someone failing to operate a glidecam.
    I like to learn from you, Nick, but this video felt very biased.

    • @petrub27
      @petrub27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @janeeightfive7331
      @janeeightfive7331 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. The gimbal footage was definitely user's fault. He failed to use the right settings and didn't know how to move the gimbal smoothly. I'm working with a DJI RS2 for a while now and learned a lot from my mistakes. Most of the jitters are due to wrong settings and/ or bad movements.

    • @GuillaumeB7
      @GuillaumeB7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, gimbal footage can be a lot smoother than that. And it's the user's fault that the framing gets so bad in the middle of the shot. At least he realizes it at some point, but he then decides to overcompensate to rectify the framing and that's where the gimbal unnatural motor acceleration happens.

    Thank you Nick. While looking for answers I came across your channel. Great info well presented. I am on the fence. About a year ago I bought a cheaper 129 dollar gimble from a company I forget but was sold at BH photo and I tried to use it and spent a lot of time and even had a session with BH tech support at the store in order to get it balanced and even he did not know how to use it. Now 1 year later I bought the Weebil S 2 and I have until Feb. 1 to return it. I am having problems using it. I got it balanced but still the functions are difficult to get down. In my heart I know I want a Glidecam or similar. This helped me understand a bit better about my plight. I'm thinking of returning and getting an HD Pro or perhaps a XR. What do you think. I use a GH5 and a few different lenses? Would I be fine with the XR. Can u suggest something. It's been a long year of struggle which is not fun. LOL. Tom

    I just wonder what is the best solution to stabilise a footage when you are changing the height while shooting. From going higher position tilt down/up to turning down in a lower position with tilt down/up or doing any other complex movements simultaneously?

    • @GuillaumeB7
      @GuillaumeB7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's impossible to do on a glidecam alone. The best way to do it would be with a glidecam + motorized gimbal combo, like the arri trinity, the upcoming tilta float, or a DIY motorized gimbal mounted on a glidecam with a vest kit. Of course it's also possible to do it, but less precisely, with a simple motorized gimbal.

    Sorry man but almost all these points are objectively wrong. Ronin S is like $500 new in most places not $800. 1 Ronin-S battery lasts about 12 hours. Never had the motors overheat or even heard of it being a thing. Never seen the motors do anything weird at all actually. It is far far quicker to balance a camera on an electronic gimbal than a glidecam. If you had ever done it, you'd know it. It is much easier to walk around with and store a gimbal. Glidecams fall down, you cant just place it with the camera wherever you want. Those robotic jumps and jitters are user error, not the gimbals. A beginner/intermediate gimbal user is 100% of the time getting better footage then a beginner/intermediate glidecam user. An advanced user on either can achieve the same shots. Just a wannabe Parker Walbeck, the ultimate TH-cam hack.

    • @GuillaumeB7
      @GuillaumeB7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, there are some instances where the glidecam floaty left and right movements are desired for effect. For example, in the movie Russian Ark, when the camera is supposed to move through the museum like a ghost. These can't be produced with an electronic gimbal.

Also the guy shooting the music video didn't have his gimbal set right. You have to know your settings on a gimbal to get it smooth just like you have to know how to use a glidecam
