This is a special video, I tour Tapio's Swan 55, which is entering the Ocean Globe Race (around the world). The race is starting tomorrow Sunday 10th of September. Tapio himself has experience from three other round-the-world races, two of them solo aboard his Asteria in the Golden Globe Race. We take a look at some of the features that make this Swan 55 specially suited for real bluewater sailing. In this video we also talk about how Tapio's previous boat Asteria sank and what we could all learn from that.
Hope you enjoy, and if you are not into boat tours and watching me and Tapio blabber along, I'm happy to tell you that the next video will have some really epic sailing again!
You are incredible !!!! Go finland go !!!!❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
47:30 very interesting news about Containers fault sinking from Tapio's Team Naval Archutects ! Fairly winds to bith of you allurgic team and Galliana Swann 55 .
Really well done, the experience evident in this discussion is really worth the time.
Loved this Interview. Lessons learned.... make your GRAB BAG easy to grab and go..... take care and stay safe😊😊
Great job!
Tapio really warmed up by the end of the video! Please thank him for doing the interview in English!
Wow. What an interview! I could listen to more of this man’s sailing story. He seems well prepared and yet still almost didn’t make it out of that harrowing experience. And yet willing to share the pain of his loss in such a candid way. ✌️
❤
That gentleman deserves my utmost respect - I salute you sir, your vessel went to rest peacefully, May she sleep soundly in her resting place. Any sailor whom addresses their vessel as “dear friend” is the best.
Good luck, Tapio. Thank you for sharing your experience and new sailboat with us.
The difference between that Blue Water Yacht and whats for sale, and Claiming blue water are like night and day..i realise hes going racing, but even just the handholds, sleeping arrangements really should be a lesson to all..fantastic boat and a real eyeopener of a story about what could go wrong. Thanks for that, it made it very real for me.
Laughed at that totally finnish reaction when that ships horn sounded. Oh well, good pause to take a drink. Epic video, and Tapio of course is a legend!
Can I add that I have zero problems with your editing. Your videos are the most magical nature, sailing, skiing escape I've ever encountered. You might be undervaluing yourself.
Love your current style, please don't change too much, you have a great balance between sailing, boat work and fabulous scenery 😊
Thank you for talking with Tapio, Juho! This was entertaining, educational, and such a compelling story. Well done.
The 'limit' you say you've reached in your video production is actually pretty damn high, Juho. After all, it's mostly about the content! Great interview with, Tapio - and his new boat is impressive. Best wishes to him and his crew, for a safe and successful OGR.
What a very frightening experience Tapio had. The will for survival was strong and so glad he survived it. In a way it makes you wonder what hit his sail boat. Very good interview and I wish him and his crew a safe and successful race. Texas.
What a great video. I first saw the length 50 minutes and I thought "Is juhno mad? Who will watch a 1:00 video these days, but you know what? it went by like a 10 minutes video.
So great.
Thank you and thank Tapio.
If you watch Kirsten videos about the race, she talks about the rescue and how much she enjoyed Tapio's company.
Great, great video.
Where is your partner these days??
And, Swan 55, my jaw dropped.
Really nice to see a true blue water boat, instead of the anchor queens we usually see, with their roller skating rink salons. I love his philosophy of deliberately making the interior (and the cockpit) cramped. It reminds me of that old saying: "You can't fall off the floor."
Juho this was a really great interview. Tapio's OGR experience was amazing - the sailors that participate in that race are incredible and to get a first hand interview of a critical event is a very sobering experience for a sailor. That modified Swan 55 is so awesome - those yachts are just beautiful. Good luck on the extra help with editing. I think you are doing a great job but there is always room for improvement. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Juho, you are making an old sailor happy to relive such things and sad that I will never do anything but dream and remember.
Great episode Juho. What a treat with the Tapico interview and to hear his best thinking on the catastrophic sinking of his vessel during the Golden Globe Race and to get a complete tour of his current vessel.
indeed. I have been wanting to hear his ideas and opinion on this for so long now.
Perfect timing since the OGR starts tomorrow! Great interview. Best of luck to Tapio and Galiana! 🖤🌎
Juho, I'm gonna have to beg to differ with you about the quality of your videos. I honestly would prefer that you don't change a thing in how you express yourself in your work. That is specifically why I look forward to watching each new release. If I wanted to watch a polished, professionally produced video then I would just go to cable TV. Polished and professional is unfortunately also boring and impersonal. Please don't change a thing man, you're doing an amazing job serious. I wish I could have gotten in touch with you guys when you were here in California. I would have really liked to help out getting the boat ready to go north. I'm pretty sure that I was real close to where you were at. Anyways thanks for this cool diversion from the normal style of video. What a crazy story! I don't think that he could have done much of anything more to make sure the boat was absolutely bullet proof yet he still sank. The ironic thing is that the guy who just jumps in an old Catalina and sails off with a couple of friends who don't know anything about sailing, doesn't have any problems at all.
What a great topic for a sailing video for your channel. Good luck to Tapio and his exquisitely beautiful sailboat.
So glad to hear from Tapio again. I look forward to following his upcoming race. I almost wish I could be on his team but it's much harder to go around the world than he lets on...
Tapio is a sailing STUD! awesome interview his Swan is absolutely beautiful.
It is great to hear and see these episodes. Adventure lives within every man's soul. Even the mention of an adventure is exhilarating.
Superb! Drinking lonkero on the teak deck of classic swan and having chat with Tapio Lehtinen about ocean sailing. Respect!
Awesome interview with Tapio! Thank you Tapio for taking the time to do this! Great job Juho!
Your videos are the best on utube ,and I can't see how they could be better then they are.
We may never come to your part of the world and the places you travel. Your videos are outstanding, as is the music, astounding beauty, your calmness under stress, drone videos, skiing, and just your personalities, which doesn’t cover it. Facing the elements gives such a vicarious experience to those of us on the sidelines. Thank you so much. We can only support you as retired folks in our 80’s by watching. Larry and Helen Misiak, Houston, TX.
We passed by Galiana a few times this spring in HKI waters, she's majestic and beautiful - really nice to get an in-person tour and conversation with Tapio - kiitos!
Erittäin mielenkiintoinen keskustelu. Onnea kisaan Tapiolle!
Love your videos, following along. Lived in Kodiak 25 years. Skippered crab boats in Bering Sea. Your Prince William Sound sailing brought back good memories. Safe travels look forward to more videos.
I think you sell yourself short on the editing skills, Juho. I mean, that video of the bald eagle pooping, and then replaying it in slow motion... Wow! I don't know where you go from there. That was epic!
Great interview with Tapio. I wish him all the best and will be following his journey around the world.
What a interview! That’s the best interview I’ve ever seen anyone do on a utube channel, it’s perfect for everything else that’s happening now with the “performance” part of Sailing (racing) and personally I’ve done some research about Kristin’s boat “mene -haha” (sp?) & on that race and his accident, so I was amazed to see it was him & you asked all the right questions that I wanted to know about likewise, I imagine other people are thinking the same thing about “different questions”. You did a phenomenal job of getting the real story, by letting him take his time and tell it, instead of rushing him or asking questions that weren’t relevant. Thanks, I’ll be looking forward to your next crossing, I’m hoping to see you both in another video when you cross paths……
Awesome video. Very sweet boat. His sinking story was unbelievable. Thanks for the video .
Great video. Thank you.
RS. Canada
I'm not a sailor at all, but I love this. Interesting stories, and what a beautiful vessel. Thanks!
❤ I own a S&S Swan, 41ft, and I love to follow your videos and adventures. But this one is special to me as the 55ft is a bigger version of my boat that I renewed entirely. So it is super interesting to see Tapio’s version of it! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this gem! ❤
This is one of the most interesting sailing videos i have ever watched, maybe the best. I could have listened to Tapio for hours. What a gracious Man and such a wealth of real world knowledge. It must have been heartbreaking to loose his sailboat, but its a risk we all face i guess no matter how well prepared we are, or how well we think out sailboats are prepared. Fantastic! Thank you Juho and Sohvi.
Yeah. I mean what hit him was incredibly bad luck. Cannot really prepare for that improbable an event.
What a beautiful boat. Reminds me of a Swan 44 I was part of the crew in my youth, my first blue water sailboat, that was sailed around the Caribbean and the owner sailed it twice around the world.
Thanks for the show.
Excellent tour of Tapio's Swan 55, she is a real sea boat with safety updates should provide the perfect platform for the crew. We wish Tapio the best on his venture. Again, your new format sounds exciting. From the past episodes we know your presentation's in the future will be top notch.
I didn't expect this. But, still, it was very engrossing. I've never heard a story, told by an eye witness, about the sinking of a sailboat! Scary stuff ! ! ! ! !
Well, I only know two (male) Finnish sailors, and here they are together! Great walk around, interesting to hear the fate of Asteria first hand, and of course the hard learned safety tips!
One of the best videos Ive watched not only on your channel, but on TH-cam all together. Great to watch two Finnish legends in one video! Hearing Tapios account of the loss of Asteria was a bit sad. But thanks again for the upload 👍🏼
That's a pretty boat! I sort of followed both of Tapio's Golden Globe races and that "least unprobable" scenario does sound like a reasonable explanation for the unlikely damage that must have occurred for such a fast sinking. Only a lightning strike causing a steam explosion within moisture in a laminate could possibly compete but the weather at the time rules it out. That Swan is very pretty; the team will no doubt have a grand old time on her. I don't know a thing about sailing but that entryway arrangement seems very practical and something I would mimic if I were refitting something. Just like the mudroom of a home on land. Thanks for the tour and interview!
Very impressive interview with Tapio, and a truly wonderful boat.
What a lovely boat! So much character! By the way, don't worry about the quality of your videos. Like many others, I thoroughly enjoy them. Good stuff.
Impressive interview and at the same time very educational!
Hearing what Tapio experienced with his incident on his Asteria, one could say that the saying is very true - hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. Happily he is still here to tell his story. We all could and should learn from his experience. Cheers, H.
I wish this was posted yesterday.
I went to see the OGR race village todays and had the liberty to meet captain Tapio and was welcome aboard Galiana.
I can confirm that not only is she the most beautiful yacht in the OGR fleet. But also the best smelling yacht I visited today 😅😅😅
How cool that Tapio is actually aware of where you keep your raft.
He told him that he’s a fan and watches. I hope they will meet again when they cross paths again, it sounded like they both enjoyed each other’s company and intelligence.
Great video. I learnt a lot. Plus, your past three or four videos have really had a high standard of production. Loved them.
Nice to see some real sailors no Click Bait!
Having sailed on a Swan 43 - this is a great boat
Tapio is a legend! Great episode, keep them coming.
Wonderful interview. Had followed the GGR with great interest and will be following the OGR also. Good luct to Galiana and good luck with the future North West Passage
I am lucky enough to have a Swan 47MKII.. I have spent the last 2 years bringing her back to life. She is setup for singlehanded sailing. She is strong beyond belief and I just love the boat. I can't say enough about old Swans. But to those considering an old Swan be prepared to get you hands dirty or pay for a ton of work to be done. But the end result is a noble boat. Best of luck Tapio!!
Important and ever so interesting details of traveling offshore. This video/conversation surely RESONATES with many who hope-to/actually-do/aspire-to sail offshore. MANY THANKS to both of you for sharing your journey/thoughts/perspectives !!!
You and Tapio should sail the Northwest passage together. That would be great to see you both doing it together.
Thank you for the interview with Tapio. He is a great person and sailor.
Thanks for sharing Tapios Swan. Can’t wait to follow this race.
Tapio sounds like he's processing trauma. A true sailor going back out tomorrow in spite of his fears although; he has more information now and is prepared. Safe journey Tapio!
???@@Mumbo_Jumbo_Kiwi.1
Excellent to hear about the design rationale from a very knowledgeable and experienced sailor. Thank-you.
I think your videos have been great all long. Always look forward to seeing your content.
tosi hyvä haastattelu ja mielenkiintoinen.
your content has been continuing to improve. thanks for sharing your experience with us. you have a unique perspective to the cruising lifestyle. It is a nice counterpoint to the norm. Great interview! Look forward to the next video.
Agreed, awesome interview with Tapio and great to see him & Galiana now in the Southern Ocean with the OGR!
Fantastic video, really enjoyed the tour of the bout and interview. Just great stuff, keep up the good work!
This is an incredible video with tons of shared knowledge. It should be part of every sailor's library.
What a beauty.
And so much thoughts gone into it.
Very impressing.
Good interview. Tapio is the man.
Excellent! Thank you for sharing your boat and your discussion with us, Tapio!
GREAT interview! two of my sailing inspirations! Awesome boat!!
Olind Stevens sure knew how to design beautiful boats. I love yawls.Great video.
Top notch interview. Thanks for sharing.
A fantastic interview- thanks for sharing
I thought that was an apartment building next to you in the beginning, until I noticed the life rafts hanging from it! 😮
I confess, I love a good boat tour, it’s actually how I found my way to your channel, you toured the boat you were on before Lumi 😅
Excellent. I had the privilege to sail one week on a Camper-Nicholson 55 in 1994 and this took me back to that exciting time.
Juho, thanks for the incredible interview! Your filming and editing has been great so far, but acknowledging your limits is an evidence of a wise man...
Great interview! Gorgeous Swan! ❤
Wow. What an absolutely epic episode! Huge thanks Tapio and Juho. Wishing best of luck and fair winds to Galiana and her crew!
Well, I think you certainly make entertaining and interesting videos. This one as well as being entertaining is particularly packed with useful information. Thankyou.
Tapio is really a gentleman, nice interview, and most importantly : cheers !
I believe you may be selling yourself short when it comes to both your videography and editing Juho. Even as a land lubber I enjoyed the tour of the racing sail boat. As always, stay well and safe.
Two sailors who impress me greatly
I like that interview and boat tour, nice format.
terrifying story. I'm glad it ended well. It doesn't seem like you can cut it any closer.
I hope Tapio can post footage of his boat under way. i would love to see the inside with all the team and folks trying to move around and get hot drinks. The claustrophobia sounds real. Love the heated drying racks.
PS When the cruise ship horn blows, that is your signal to take a sip from your beer.(:
Tapio is a rare genius - his self-drying dish rack and heated wet lockers are going into all of my future boats :-)
Terrifying, inspirational and educational. What a treat. Thank you.
Great video, Tapio had a devastating ordeal and can smile and tell the story. He’s lucky to be alive. Incredible story. Great interview.
Awesome video! What a great interview with Tapio, I loved watching the GGR.
Beautiful boat and thanks to you and Tapio to share with us experience and explanation about his boat
Great video and fantastic interview. What a man, and what a yacht Nautor Swan 55. Thank you
Great content on this video. Very humbling listening to Tapio and yourself.Wishing you calm seas😊😢
Brilliant! What a great boat and interview, cheers!!
What a great story, and a fascinating character! Thanks for bring the Ocean Race into perspective for us, so good to hear from a participant. Congratulations on growing your team a bit as well, because it's a huge amount of work to make quality video and your standards are pretty high: I always worry that my favourite you tubers will burn out without proper support, and that would make me sad. All the best to you and the good doctor, Juho, be well.
A great video. 🎉. 20mins. Longer than I would normally watch but with Tapio and the amazing story totally worth it!
Awesome video thank you so much! It was a pleasure to listen to you and Tapio talk.
Great! Good luck Tapio! Thanks for the video. The videos were always great. Good luck going forward.
Thanks for the great day of filming! Was super interesting to shoot this and listen to both of you. World of sailing is still a new for me and it's really cool to learn.
Incredible interview!!! Many thanks for your work!
Big thanks for a very interesting episode. I have followed You and Tapio for a while. Tapio is a legend, humble and experienced, and I like the way he is engaging young people in sailing.
Great interview with Tapio. Your video's are great Juho.
Don't be ridiculous , your videography and editing has always been top rate, don't underrate yourself.
