Thank you for watching everyone. We've hit 100 000 subscribers too, so this is a bit of a special episode! 🥳 What did you think, was it too long or are you one of those that like longer videos? I don't necessarily plan on releasing many such long videos in the future (so much work to edit 😬), but for this one I felt like I needed to cover a larger span of time to make the story complete...
Keep em long! ppl can pause. TH-cam remember where u wher last time u left off. Especially for fans like me its perfekt :D Or short! It dont really matter to be honest =) I know the HUGE mindspace it goes in to telling a story and sometimes its just enough or you just have to go on =) Cheers / The Maxi Racer guy from sweden
I like longer videos. And I can also split them. Finished my Norwegian felted shoes at least the knitting part. Where can I order Finnish wool pants that you have shown a while ago?
09:05 "... I just recorded the VHF radio because I thought it would look more dramatic on video" Hahaha I LOVE!!! Brilliant! 0K back to the video. Very nice as usual, thank you!
Really appreciate you taking me on my first journey over the Columbia bar. A Oregonian born and raised, always hearing of vessels in distress on Columbia bar ,really have admiration for those taking the challenge. Enjoy the scenic and calm of the strait Juan de Fuca Until next time calm winds.
Great video. Yes, there is one thing that gets you safely over the bar………… patience! Love the channel. Your boat and your personalities. Keep it up. And, you deserve a bigger audience.
great video ,I spent 20 years sailing georgia straight out of vancouver BC ,you will love it , killer whales ,strong tides further north and beautiful wilderness sailing ,lots of logs in the water from log booms being towed . Reality sailing channels are the best , I look foreward to your future adventures .
Hi Juho, thanks for letting us be part of your journey! For me, this video was not too long at all! About your Centerboard: we had a Maracuja 39 some time ago, which was the smaller sibling of your Alumi. For quite a while, Garcia made the centerboards, that they have play sideways. Under side pressure they set on the sides with a slight angle. The idea was to give it a better upwind performance. Maybe you noticed, that the bushing in the centerboard was not cylindric, then it was definitely made on purpose like that. Also, the centerboard is not totally unweighted, it has some lead inside at the back side, to keep it in down. It's floating in nearly perfect sailing position under water (I installed our centerboard after a repair while the boat was in the water). We learned, that It was most comfortable to sail with the centerboard partly up when going abeam and completely up, when sailing on a broad reach or downwind. The boat movements were also better with the boards up and the chance that you broach, is nearly zero without centerboard. We newer locked the centerboard down, it stayed in position by itself and it would be able to pivot, if we hit something with the boat. For the same reason, we kept the small daggerboard behind the skeg mostly up, or at least higher than the skeg. As hitting something serious with the daggerboard down could possibly break the daggerboard box, which is most likely weaker then the daggerboard itself. We completely lowered the daggerboard only when needed for upwind sailing. Congratulations to your boat, I am sure, you will going to love it. We were very happy with ours. Sailing performance was very good except for upwind, but that's what you pay for a boat, with an inboard ballast (and 1m draft). All the best, enjoy life and stay safe. Rolf
Hi Rolf, I made a comment about the aft daggerboard in another video about a construction error in a few (the first?) mid-80 years' Maracuja and Nouanni. I've read, and was also told by an owner, that a Maracuja sank within minutes after the daggerboard box welds failed after hitting something with the aft daggerboard, and that Garcia contacted the owners to warn them and recommended a specific reinforcement. Do you happen to know anything more about that?
thanks @rolf6734 and @fredflintstone8664 , it's a late reply but I've noticed your comments! We use the centerboard much the same way as you. we're aware of the daggerboard box issue and I have seen photos of the destroyed daggerboard box. Ours is partly reinforced and might need to check into reinforcing it more, not completely sure. I'm trying to ask Garcia for more specifics, usually they get back with a reply but it might take a month or two (or three...)
During my bout with Covid I binge watched Alluring Arctic Sailing for 3 weeks! I’m catching up with 4 year old episodes. Old Man loves your adventures. Stay sailing❤
I’ve been subbed for a couple years. I don’t follow extremely closely, but enough to know the channel’s general arc, and I love love love it. The couple is mindblowingly informed and are able to present in a comprehensive and entertaining manner. The knowledge and information is gargantuan. Just wow
Congratulations on 100K subscribers! It's great to see your new boat out sailing since the refit and all the hard work you both put into it. Safe travels and happy sailing for 2023!!
A brick of a vessel and I am amazed at what you accomplished in such a short period of time to get her seaworthy. This was a terrific catch-up and the moon light shots were very special. Looking forward to more adventures.
Congratulations Juho and Sohvi for 100k+ subscribers. It has been a long road from your start but you did it by sharing beautiful videography and telling a unique story relative to the other sailing cruisers on TH-cam. Another great video. Lumi looks amazing out on the water and I enjoyed this segment of her journey. Thanks for sharing!
the both of you did one hell of a job on that boat compared to when you first stepped aboard her. looks like it was worth the time spent. stay safe you two.
I love you guys and look out for your videos more than any other channel. It's great to see you headed north, anticipating the next leg. Cheers from Bristol. Keep warm.
II found this episode to be extremely enjoyable. You have been through the fire together,. and the filthy beast cleaned up well l(with a huge effort) and turned out to be very good investment. . And now we get to participate vicariously through your videos. What a treat.
Your the most original and authentic producers in your content, also fearless. Enjoy you both and hope to be able to contribute to the cause soon, love...
I did enjoy the rehab of this boat, but this is what really makes that work worthwhile. Watching it glide through the sea and giving you guys the enjoyment of the journey. I have mainly sailed in lakes that are landlocked. But I have had 3 vacations when we actually went out away from land and absolutely loved the sailing. Looking forward to more great sails at times that others deem not worthy to do so.
We really love your channel and the videos you take time to make so we can share your journeys with us. Thankyou So much. All the best for 2023. Keep warm and well fed. Stay safe. Take care xxxx congratulations on 100,000 subscribers
I am impressed you figured out the centerboard solution and the leaky shaft drive solution, installed the Raymarine autopilot and replaced the windows quickly. Excellent boatsmithing. Congratulations.
You guys are in for some beautiful scenery, I'm in the comox valley and used to sail in desolation sound. Dont mind the rain and enjoy the inside passage.
Thanks a lot for a very good and interesting video. Your channel is absolutely one of the best sailing channels right now. Waiting for the next one and hope you will not have any problems with the centerboard. All the best to both of you from Greece.
Native Oregonian, who lives in the southern coastal mountains! Our waters can be wild and very angry, welcome to the PNW. Long time subscriber and have been loving the journey. A little dramatics is acceptable. Thanks for sharing with us.
Congrats on 100k. Being under sail with no other boats in sight really enhances that sense of oneness with nature and detachment from the cares of this world. Sailing over here on the coast of Maine pretty much shuts down this time of year like the Northwest. Thanks for letting us share your adventure.
While in the USN, my ship was stationed in Portland. I've been over that bar about 40+ times... Sometimes the swells were over 35ft; very rough. No matter what the weather was doing, we always had a pilot with us... Good luck !
I must compliment you on your skills, both nautical, and those involved in the skills of handling of tools necessary to keep your boat in shape for safe sailing. As a landlubber, I salute you. Happy sailing.
Ahoy, from Victoria, Yuho and Sohvi.... It was nice to hangout with you both on your boat and on the dock when you came through. I hope you got to play in the big snow dump we had just after you left. Great video, not at all too long.....and I look forward to seeing the ones to come.
I knew exactly where you were by the title of this video. Its nice to see another sailing channel passing through. The Colombia River is such an important part of WA and OR. Not just because of shipping but also fishing and power. There are several dams that produce a lot of power for the region. I know you are making your way North but do take the time to enjoy the beauty of the islands here. There are a lot of hidden gems all along the inside passage. Looking forward to seeing your discoveries along this beautiful cruising ground. I would like to see more of it my self and one day I will.
This is the most enjoyable and informative sailing documentary i have ever watched. Amazing for me who will never get to experience this in this lifetime. Greetings from South Africa 😊
You weren't sure you captured the night moonlit night sky, but I believe you got it brilliantly , including a few stars twinkling stars and the sounds of waves gently slapping the hull.
Great channel. I lived aboard for 25 years, it reminds me of the endless work and money and blood we spent on our boats. Now we have a small boat moored in the driveway on her trailer lol.
This was such a delightful episode. Enjoyed your observations, even on the smaller details. Being a Dane, where temperatures are more moderate, I'm facinated by you 'crazy Finns' and your perfect acclimation to frost and ice 🙂. You are the living proof that if there is a will, there's a way!
Oregon native here: First of all, thanks for stopping in OR. Really cool to see places I've been in videos. With the weather, here in the winter it's a bit dicey. But if you ever stop by in the summer, make sure to allocate some time to exploring. Heading east 2-3 hours will get you into some of the cleanest air in the world, most beautiful areas, old logging roads, and rarely seen places. I can always provide some locations in the future if it ever happens.
Greetings Juho, Love your videos sailing was my thing when I was younger and single. I'm just an old landlocked Mariner now who appreciates y'all taking us on your adventures. I like them short or long. You put so much detail into them. I enjoy and look forward to every episode. I love your partner it's what she doesn't say! Thank you so much.
Thank you Juho. I am planning the same (in part) trip in early 2024. San Francisco to Seattle. I’ll be in a 33’ sailboat, singlehanded, with little fuel storage so will rely heavily upon wind. I’ve found it difficult to find any quality info on the passage North and very much appreciate you publishing this! Any additional info you’d be willing to share regarding tactics, suggestions, ideas, etc would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for the work to put these together! I have just subscribed and will try to help support as funds allow. Be safe and best wishes!
Sweetest boat and crew on the seas to adventure to new places! Thanks for your sharing! I have read books of early Northwest passage crews and much history! Cannot wait to travel West to East on this part of the planet! God speed!
Such a cool channel, makes my heart warm, despite the cold weather! You two are so cool as well, keep posting and arctic sailing. Cheers from Vienna, Austria 😊
I really enjoy your style of video making. Lots of beautiful footage of actual sailing. No made up drama and shenanigans except that VHF maybe. Wonderful vessel too. Worth every penny and the hard work for sure!

I like the longer videos. Thank you for sharing your adventures. You're inspiring me to do the same some day. Love from California.
The most cruising thing I heard in a bit.
"It leaks less then the last one, we'll call it a win" . Love it.
yeah... :D
I love the long ones. It is like reading an complete article, and not just the headlines. Best wishes from Germany.
09:05 "... I just recorded the VHF radio because I thought it would look more dramatic on video" Hahaha I LOVE!!! Brilliant!

I really like to watch these excursions as well as the remarkable cool of the skipper.

Hi Donna. Inflation is high at the moment, but a million isn't the new 100,000 yet! 🙂 You've got an extra zero in your number there. hehe.

This was a wonderful episode. Congratulations on 100K and kudos for you both being so competent and adventuresome.
You have a natural aptitude for film making. Its as good as and better than some "professionally" produced documentaries. Well done.
Really appreciate the longer videos, a chance to get more immersed in the story being told, thank you
II found this episode to be extremely enjoyable. You have been through the fire together,. and the filthy beast cleaned up well l(with a huge effort) and turned out to be very good investment. . And now we get to participate vicariously through your videos. What a treat.

Your confession regarding using the Internet versus VHF for Wx reports brought me a chuckle. Thank you and happy sailing!
You are a brilliant, often quite humorous narrator and I love watching all your videos whether you are working on the boat or sailing.
Im impressed with you both, as many sailors head towards warmer waters, you all are heading north to cold northwest. Safe travels.
I did enjoy the rehab of this boat, but this is what really makes that work worthwhile. Watching it glide through the sea and giving you guys the enjoyment of the journey. Great episode. Very challenging piece of water. Well done guys . Welcome to Canada 🍁
Being resourceful, Common sense, being practical, and safety seem to be at the forefront with this guy

Desolation Sound, hottest ocean water north of Baja California... home of Refuge Cove :)
Fantastic video. Great work fixing the keel. Despite the problems I think she will be a great boat.
I love the sweater she has. I had one like that that my Mom got me when she was in Finland. Can't find sweaters like that anywhere.
Díky!
Thanks a lot for a very good and interesting video. Your channel is absolutely one of the best sailing channels right now. Waiting for the next one and hope you will not have any problems with the centerboard. All the best to both of you from Greece.

Nothing beats being taken along REAL sailing! Nothing Mambi-Pambi or pretentious. Love the video
Kiitos!
You can see that you enjoyed editing this film, it’s beautiful to watch! All the best!
It's good to see you under way again and personally I think videos 25 to 30 minutes long are perfect.
I am a 20 year Navy sailor. I was always stationed in the Northwest and love seeing all of these places again!!!

Glad you had a safe trip and many important chores/repairs completed or at least , "a job well begun is a job half done."

Incredible adventure! That full moon at sea was gorgeous!
Excellent storytelling and wonderful photography. Love this channel! All the best for 2023 and hope you enjoy scenic Salish Sea travels.
Greetings Juho,
Love your videos sailing was my thing when I was younger and single. I'm just an old landlocked Mariner now who appreciates y'all taking us on your adventures. God bless Y'all with the Sun at your back and fairwinds filling your sails. Much peace and love from northeast Texas 🤠✌️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✨🧸✨
Thanks for sharing your progress north.
Take care, all the best, and God bless.

Thanks for sharing !
I prefer shorter videos more frequently - but I am happy to watch whatever best suits you !
Great episode. Good length. Interesting material, and your sense of humour always a bonus. 🙂 Cheers
God speed!
Welcome to Beutiful British Columbia 🇨🇦
Wonderful episode.
SAFE PASSAGE NORTH !

So exiting to see you sailing the new boat!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Such a cool channel, makes my heart warm, despite the cold weather! You two are so cool as well, keep posting and arctic sailing. Cheers from Vienna, Austria 😊
Great video. You are on the way to 200k subscriptions. Love high latitude sailing. Your content is so different that all the warm weather warriors.
I really enjoy your style of video making. Lots of beautiful footage of actual sailing. No made up drama and shenanigans except that VHF maybe. Wonderful vessel too. Worth every penny and the hard work for sure!
