How do you know that I earn a lot of money? Cause I used hundred dollar bills for the video thumbnail. First I was going with the one dollar bills but then I thought, f*ck it, let's go crazy!
PS. I wrote the script and gathered the numbers for this video around 3-4 weeks ago, so my total number of videos is not the same anymore. Also, like I mentioned in the video, the actual amount of hours spent is probably a lot higher (especially when you add things like uploading, thumbnail creation etc), but this gives you some kind of a rough idea! :)
EDIT (addition): I came to check back on this video and half expected to find a potential sh*tshow in the comment section. I think you should have added a reality check on the cost of owning a boat (BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand $$$). You should have added in the approximate cost of repairs, maintenance, and updates (rudder!), plus docking and fuel costs, etc. Most people would get an even deeper appreciation of what and where you are doing this. Your adventure is for dedicated and knowledgeable sailors. If you couldn't do or manage all those repairs yourself, you would be up the creek (fjord in your case) without a paddle.

Thanks for making this one. I think you made the right choice in publishing it. I have always been curious about the inner workings of youtube publication and the patreon (or similar) platform. I think you did a nice and concise explanation. I appreciate the difficulty of that decision and the personal exposure required to do this video. I am subscribed on YT but not patreon. I'm not a fan of the various social media platforms. I make an exception for YT because of sailing and flying content. I subscribe to those I follow and always give a like to each video I watch. Your channel is one I'd like to contribute to, but I have not gotten over my patreon problem yet.
Yes, your unique content is a big reason I am here. I'm not familiar with that part of the world and was shocked to see someone cruising a sailboat in that environment. I was hooked immediately. Very unique and I get a great deal of enjoyment watching and listening. It's an interesting part of the world with interesting people but you and your on board friends are the biggest reason I watch. I find you and Sohvi to be very likeable people and the life you're living very adventurous and admirable. I'm glad you are out there.

Thanks for the transparency. This should work as a wake-up call to many delusional folks out there. For the record (my personal opinion), Sailing La Vagabond was much better when they had the monohull. After that they lost sight of their roots (or changed with the extra money flowing in). They still make success but I lost my interest in their content. You are more aligned w/ what I look for in sailing videos. I hope you remain strong and stay the route. I wish you continuous success.

SLV lost me around the same time. Went from a rawness of a young couple trying to sail an ex charter boat to a slick expensive professional production. I literally groaned when they jump up and down on their green platform but fly to and from Australia to compete in yacht races. Yes they have been very successful in generating cash, but i sense they were happier without it. They are now locked into a process that is so far from a carefree lifestlye they started with.

My wife and I loved SLV in it’s early days like many. We bought merch from them and proudly wore it and loved their earlier stuff. We bought Elena’s album and played it in our cafe for years…when we worked our butts off, we dreamed of sailing like they were. We would have loved to have met them in the Bahamas and often missed them only by a few nautical miles. We did notice their subscriber total literally explode in a very short period of time and wondered how that happened. We lost interest when the catamaran and baby came along. Not haters, just a couple who doesn’t have kids, likes to focus on sailing and the catamaran life we didn’t relate to.
I will defend SLV when Riley was explaining his desire to see a little bit more kick back from the subscribers as I do believe the amount of time and effort to put into producing incredible quality videos IS worth supporting a couple rather than a corporation. They do produce superior videos with great editing and audio. They take the time to actually edit the useless crap or horrible audio from their videos. I would expect this as I believe Elena has the education in her past to do this and it shows.
I liked that they transported Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic to deliver her to a climate change conference and yes, while it may be annoying to see them jet set somewhere, I think this is pretty much unavoidable for most of us. I do feel they bring and discuss climate and ocean issues to their videos (in the past - we haven’t watched them in a while) that I like to see discussed as without any discussion, there is zero chance of change. They do, at least to me, appear to be trying to have a smaller carbon footprint than many of us so good on them.
I hope their videos haven’t changed a lot with more frequent ads and really pushing PATREON but I wouldn’t know as I haven’t watched them in a while. They way I view it is a reminder is fine but people will find a way to support you if they want to so I don’t like to be “pushed.”

I've occasionally looked in at your videos in the past year. The biggest reason was that I spent 16 years in Alaska sailing my wooden 33 foot sloop, with some Winter sailing when possible. Also, I worked as crew on a 121 foot wildlife research boat specializing in the Aleutian Islands, the Beaufort Sea and some of the Russian Siberian coast. All of this sailing gave me a love and fascination with the higher latitudes. I'm now retired but I still remember what that part of the world is like and your and Eric's channels helps me relive that all over again. Thanks. As for the money you make, it isn't near enough...

So 18400-2600 = 15,800.00$. Hopefully this makes you feel a bit better :-)

      Thx for the reply!
Eh everyone Juho actually reads our comments! LOL
I am self-employed and it took me some times before the ball got rolling, I was conservatively thinking 3 but in fact it really took 5 years. But as you stay with it it will grow, especially if you stay authentic (I think). Some channels after a while start using dramatic title to attract viewers(I nearly sunk!, we were attacked by pirates! etc) I think that is very short-term thinking and the videos are often just sensationalism. I quickly end my subscriptions with those.
Yeah you have to stop losing gear ;-)

    • @Coyotehello
      @Coyotehello 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Me again if you have 5 minutes here is positive thinking, getting the ball rolling, every 'like' counts and exponential math:
      Exponential math is f*ng scary.
      .
People don’t really understand how it works.
A good way to explain it is to say, if you mow my lawn for a month, I will pay you a million dollars. Or, I can give you a penny on day one, 2 pennies on day two, 4 on day 3, 8 on day 4... and continue to double it every day.” Instinct says to go for the million at the end of the month, rather than the pennies doubling daily.
By day 31, the pennies add up to around 20 million dollars.
So that is the videos you are creating.
Then, if everyone that discover your videos click 'like' and do the same for all your previous videos it is like compounded interests.
      Haha.
      Cheers,
      a.

People do not understand how much time it takes to edit video. I did video for conventions (the script for convention video is very complicated too) before I retired and the rule of thumb (and I've heard this from multiple videographers in the professional video community) is that it takes approximately (approximately) 10 hours of editing for 3 minutes of finished video. It took me a little longer but not much. Video editing is a slog and it is not fun. Shooting the video is fun but it is a small percentage of the time used. You are very economical!

I have to agree with you on this. I feel he really must’ve underestimated his time spent on the entire creative process. Even when I used SPLICE (when it was free) to mash up a quick video of our Bahamas cruising for family, it took a VERY long time to do so. I feel the creators spend so much time to create good content.

As someone who does video production for a living, I always think about how both for youtubers, and for professionals in the video industry as a whole, many people both have no idea the amount of work that goes in and on top of that some think it’s easy and not a real skill or talent. But you are putting a lot of your life into it. I’m grateful for the content. I think this video builds awareness of the fact that youtubers really do have a hefty full time job and you are definitely filling a gap. Your video on sailboat heaters was my first it was awesome! Keep it going and goodluck turning into a living so you can focus even more on the content and lifestyle. Thanks for your hard work!!
Ps after this i will definitely make sure not to calculate what i spend on equipment! At least not until I do my taxes that is.

Juho, I have enjoyed every one of your videos I have seen (most you have produced). You do have a unique channel and sailing focus. I think this video is very good, helpful to others, and a good sign of your transparency and honesty about the costs and challenges you have faced so far.
I do have a friendly, easy to implement, suggestion for your channel. I encourage you to start your videos by a very brief introduction of yourself, something like "Hi, I'm Juho, from Finland, I started sailing...and my goal is...and my partner Sophia and I are ...join us as we explore Iceland, snowboard, etc..." and I would do that each and every video. Each one. Make it a part of your "intro" to the video. Also, I think most of the sailing channels that keep the viewers engaged (and that leads to more Patreon supporters) do so by making some kind of "Here is who I am, and YOU (viewer) are with us...'" I think many of the viewers like feeling like they are "there" with you, imagining what it is like, etc.
To be frank, i did not know your name until watching several of your videos, and was not certain where you started (though i suspected Finland because of your accent), or how you supported yourself (translation mentioned in this video). Those are things that are personal details, but help a new visitor to your channel get some kind of possible connection. I came across your channel by chance, and started watching because I always dreamed of sailing in Arctic waters. Then when I saw you got Artika (the boat), I was again interested in following your refit and use of that particular expedition boat.
I think making a brief intro for each video, that clearly says your name, where you started, and your goals, can help hook some new viewers who will want to follow you, especially if they have not viewed any of your previous videos. Hope this comment helps. Fair Winds and steady as you go! :)

Juho, I've known from the very start when you 1st started making videos that you were a very honest and transparent person, which is very unique in today's world. I've never cared how much money you make from TH-cam and I told you way back that you don't have to disclose how much you make because I never felt that was anyone's business but your own.
But now that you have disclosed what you've earned from the videos, I think it's safe to say that you are grossly underpaid for all the splendid work that you do.. and I hope your viewership can support your Channel much more, because you simply deserve more. It's not fair for dishonest people to make more while good and honest people such as yourself makes less.
As always, I wish you the very best💖

Regarding your audience and if I go on with the analogy with movies, some directors make blockbusters which may be decent or not and some creators will always have a limited audience but will be remembered as very gifted. You and a few others can be proud of what you achieve : producing a very decent and entertaining content in a indisputable style. That's more than many will ever do ! 0% bikini girl, 100% wilderness it's a pretty good ratio, all in all ✌

This was a very interesting video, thank you! (And thanks for your usual content as well!)
In terms of the hourly rate, you might want to calculate that based on a shorter timespan (say the last 6 months), to account for the fact that both your viewership and your skill as an editor have increased. Your latest videos probably have a better return than the earlier ones where you spent a whole week editing 10 minutes of finished material, and this will probably be a better indicator of future performance.
Anyway, thanks again, love your videos!

Salaries of pilots depend on the weight of the aircrafts in “traditional”:European airlines, in contrary to newer airlines, even more so when work / salaries obligations are more relaxed as in the Middle East.
This is the very reason why most UK, GER, FRA reduce or withdraw the A380 from their fleet.

A pretty honest state of the glory and extreme wealth experienced by TH-camrs. I have heard from many channels that it takes 1-2 hours per minute to pull together a video for publication. The real successful YT sailors work their behinds off to build their subscriber base - it is a long road to get to the top. What I have really liked about this channel is the drone footage above the Arctic watching you, Sohvi, and friends have a great time sailing, carving up fresh powder, and showing us beautiful places I would previously not given a thought to visit but now that I have seen them I would love to visit them. Part of the expense of a YT sailor is the boat - they are not cheap to buy nor maintain. Keep developing the channel Juho - it has great possibilities for growth. Thanks for sharing!

Your honesty has earned my subscription. Thank you for this video.
Let me explain why this video is both a curiosity and an important resource to those that watch sailing videos.
Many current and prospective sailors, myself included (no boat yet), are watching sailing vlogs. I cannot speak for everyone but I suspect my reasonings here is not unique.
Many of us are looking forward to sailing the sea for the first time and are watching these videos for both lessons learned, important tips, and destinations.
My favorite sailing videos are technical or have some technical about sailing in them. How to sail, what gear to use, how to set a sailing plan, adjusting sails while running, getting into trouble and figuring out how to get out of it. The destinations for me are the second reason. Important yes, but I myself am less curious about someones vacation video of a destination or how they live their lives, but rather, watching the journey and picking up tips.
So why is this video you made important?
Well, for me, being a systems engineer and avid photographer, the tasks of putting together videos I find simple.
I love this video because it told me exactly what to expect, how long it would take and what profits from my work I would receive.
I have seen two other videos explain pretty much the exact thing you just said. One video I watched recently from the O'Kelly's also mentioned they consulted with Le Vagabond about earning money, and the result is basically, if you do videos to make a bit of money, you must consistently put out weekly videos and have new content and even then you are in it for a very long haul before anything of substantial income is realized. Le Vagabond, with their 1.5 Million subs and Patreon sponsors as well as vendor sponsors is estimated to earn $250k USD after expenses, and they just got a new 2 milion dollar boat partially sponsored buy the boat company. Thats quite an amazing amount, but at what cost and time. 10 years? Being the first? Can it be replicated? BTW I love their channel as well. They guy could be my twin, but with a sexier accent.
To me, I have already decided what kind of sailing I want to do and I have come to the conclusion that my travels will not be very unique to the sailing community to warrent the effort, time and expense of consistent filming, editing, uploading and all the other items of marketing to make any real income, gain sponmsorship, or even acclaim. Again, this is for me and my time. I'd rather be sailing and exploring, or sleeping onboard (and secretly rekindeling some romance with my wife of 27 years).
Your video here is a confirmation for me that my time is a bit better spent on other tasks, so thank you.
However, others may have a different approach. They may enjoy content creation much more than I do and find their vlogging enjoyable enough to consider monetizing them and earn some cash. Maybe they think they have something worth it to the viewers they may be able to parley into just enough money to keep them sailing and thats just what they want.
This video provides them some grounded facts and reality on how to acheive this.
Keep the videos coming. You certainly have a unique sailing perspective in the north that no other cruiser channel is doing. So I expect one day you can stop your day job and just sail if you wanted to.
Fair Winds, and I hope to meet you on the seas at an achorage one day.
