    Whats funny , Before Snell signed with the Giants last year. He was looking for a longterm deal and no one wanted to offer him the contract. Even the 182 mill right now. Teams didn’t wanna give it to him but all of a sudden Dodgers said ok we’ll give u a long term contract. Everyone is up and arms about it. There were plenty of times other Teams could have signed him but they didn’t...Also, Deffered contract is not exclusive to Dodgers. All MLB teams can do the same,. Actaully deffered contracts has been happening for more than 30 yrs. that's why there was a Bobby Bonilla contract.

But yeah Dodgers could assemble a super team every year, but you still gotta play 162 games and win 11 games in the playoffs to get crowned. And that's extremely tough.

    Arte had both Trout and Ohtani at the same time for 6 years. That's right, it wasn't a dream it really happened. Some people mistakenly call the angels a small market team, maybe in terms of popularity but Arte has Dodgers money, and he refused to do anything to make his starting rotation better. Dodgers had similar starting rotation problems but did not waste any time at all while they had Shohei to fix it and they are still trying to improve. I agree with with Ben, get mad at your team for not willing to spend.

    I followed baseball before the Curt Flood Case. That led to Free Agency. Before then Teams controlled players even after their 1-year contracts expired. A lot of these debates were also around during the Big Red Machine. 3 MVPs in a line up at one time. Every team had the opportunity. Some do it, some play money ball.

    • @johnwakamatsu3391
      @johnwakamatsu3391 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I also followed baseball before free agency and spoke to a MLB player who played before free agency. He said that Johnny Bench earned $60,000 per year and he was paid $18,000 as a catcher for the San Diego Padres. I know that player usually worked part time jobs after the season. I agree with free agency and it is difficult to become a free agent in MLB and just ask any MLB player than never became a free agent.

    • @JackAPowers
      @JackAPowers 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@johnwakamatsu3391 As a pre-teen, watched Pete Rose's ROY and within the last decade or so talked with him for about a half-hour.
      For his 2nd job, Pete was in the Military Reserves, thus the hair cut.
      He too talked about those days and how once you signed on that line, they owned your career.
      If not for Curt Flood filling a case, even though he lost in SCOTUS, it brought everything to a head and my opinion.
      Owners still run those first years in MiLB contracts like those old days. Understandable. They put money into player development and deserve some guarantees for their investment risk.
      However, once that time is put in, so happy they can get paid their worth today.
      A cap would only pull us back to the old days.
      The owners make so much money today from playoffs, while unless in the contract, the player ends up playing for free after only a percent of the take in the minimum number of games in the series. Even before then do no get a percent of all return from the playoffs. Then expected to give bonuses to a lot of staff, etc.
      Instead of going backwards, it is time to move more forward. The Owners need to give players more for playoffs than champagne in the clubhouse and a ring for the winners.
      To win is not easy. The Owners may field the team, but I have yet to see one of them drive in a run or participate in making an opponent out.

    I don't understand the issue with deferred money if the AAV / CBT hit is still fair? Ohtani has most of his contract deferred but it's still $46M against the CBT threshold and $46M the Dodgers have to pay into escrow every year - which is the highest salary of any player in the league. How is it unfair that the Dodgers are paying more for Ohtani than any player in the MLB?

    I like your idea of a salary floor. I've always wondered if the salary cap might make rich owners pay less to players, which would be bad for everyone else. By setting an appropriate salary floor, this problem might be solved as well.

    In Japan, in a certain field, a person who is so strong that it is difficult to beat them no matter how much time, money, hard training, state-of-the-art equipment, machines, data analysis, etc., is spent, and who continues to be active for a long time, is called a "musou(kanji 無双)." Examples of such Japanese men include current baseball player Shohei Otani, gymnast Kohei Uchimura at the peak of his career, and swimmer Kosuke Hagino. I was personally aiming at Blake since MLB revealed 24-25 FA list. He was on top same as Corbin with 7.2 WAR amongst starting pitchers(Shohei's highschool superior Yusei was the 3rd with 6.0). So I'm so happy with his joining LAD. But TTTT the team's pitching competence is still insufficient. Yossy, Glasnow, Blake, Shohei, Jack...we need 1 more potent starter to firm six-men.

    The context about this is appreciated. Objectively speaking, I think a lot of people are upset because the Dodgers fanbase is known to be insufferable. Not my take. Just from what I've seen online.
    Here's my issue. MLB likes to prop up the same markets globally. There are superstars on most other teams. If the NBA can make Oklahoma City and Denver merchandise cool in the mainstream, MLB can do the same with its teams not from LA or NY. Even if my team, the Toronto Blue Jays, spent a billion dollars, the media will still contextually get everything wrong about my team and city. Not to mention the xenophobic jokes. National media writers last year deemed Toronto "bad for baseball" if Ohtani signed there.

    All the teams could have signed Snell to a long term contract last year. No one wanted him. How much of this is like seeing your ex who you dumped suddenly on tv dating a movie star?

    Rich people are often cheap people. They got rich by not spending everything they have all the time. That habit results in some owners not putting out a competitive product. The team makes money though, which is what really matters to them.

    I don’t think anyone is mad at the Dodgers people are pissed off that this is allowed by MLB. Also the Yankees were hated for this exact reason so your takes are way off on this topic. I normally agree with you but not on this

      The Yankees did this since the beginning and are still doing this, The Mets are about to spend big bucks The dodgers are more creative than other franchises. Afraid I don’t see your point.

    You can say whatever you want it is unfair to the small market teams that you can spend whatever you want unless a small market team doesn’t mind losing money what they really need to do is get rid of all the TV contracts and have it be MLB TV that you pay for and they’ll be revenue sharing equal with every team and get rid of the deferred contracts

    I am so sick of the deferred battle cry. Many teams defer money. Ken Griffen Jr just got paid this year because of deferment. Same people whining about deferment are the same people who will say, you can't buy wins if LA doesn't win. It's a joke

    No buddy, the Dodgers aren’t paying the same luxury tax the Mets are. They’re avoiding paying part of this by deferment.
    Not just that but the best player in the league has deferred all of his contract, so other teams can’t catch up.

      The Dodgers are not avoiding a luxury tax. The deferred payments still count against the luxury tax. Ohtani's hit is $46m a year, the present-day AAV of the contract. Snell's will be $34m a year. Betts, Freeman, etc - all of their present-day AAVs count against the luxury tax. Then the Dodgers are also required by the CBA to set aside the present-day AAV of every contract in escrow. They can't just kick the can down the road and hope for the best, they need to have that money. Every year. So yes, the Dodgers are paying the luxury tax just as all the other teams above the threshold.

      @what? That’s the very definition of avoiding part of the tax penalty. They’re avoiding the other percent of that salary. If Ohtani hadn’t deferred they’d be on the hook for 70 mil.
      It’s quite literally the main reason to do this, to be able to pay people a copious amount of money but not facing the penalty of having to pay the luxury tax for the full amount.

      @eddyrdz7543 They are literally not avoiding anything. They are paxing the tax according to the rules set. Deferred contracts are taxed at NPV instead of total value because deferred money inherently has less value. $68m in 2034 will be worth a LOT less than $68m paid out this year, that's just how money and economics work. If Ohtani hadn't deferred it would have just been a standard $460-500/10 contract, which is... what the tax hit is already. The extra $200m-ish is just to make up for the devaluation of the money he'll receive.
      Deferring helps with payroll/cashflow. But it does not circumvent the luxury tax the way people are hung up on. The team still takes a hit at the contract's NPV, for every player.
