🎤 Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove
[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been workin' at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across thе border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it mеans to be livin'
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
[Pre-Chorus]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising and entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs
[Chorus]
Said I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

I love this song it gets you thinking 😍
Aya
I appreciate the fact that Luke understood the perfection and simplistic beauty of Chapman’s song and kept his cover true to the original.
I actually don’t. Would have loved to see someone do something more than a fast car karaoke
@scottmeyers6296 it's not a karaoke it's a cover. Covers are meant to take old tunes and put a newer spin on them while keeping the essence of the old song. Karaoke is when they sing the song the exact way it used to be with no new tunes or accents. Plus idk why you're complaining when Luke has tons of other original songs to listen to, it's not like he's leaving you out to dry.
@@fireflame5296 a karaoke version is when a singer covers a song in the same manner it was originally recorded. He could have simply gone to a karaoke bar, requested this song, sang it as she sang it, and come up with this.
I don’t listen to Luke. I like this song, and was interested in hearing a different interpretation of it, rather than simply a karaoke version.
@@scottmeyers6296 this song is perfect the way it is, why change it?
@@fireflame5296 because that’s what artists do
I LOVE that he didn't change a thing about the original. What a tribute! ❤
He legally couldn’t
@@SFranc Its a cover, yes he can. He could add any style he wants. He just can't change the words.
@@OhVohix nope. Read Chapman’s no sample policy.
@@SFranc
This isn't sampling. Sampling is actually lifting a part of the original recording and sticking it onto a totally different song.
This is a cover and Combs 100% makes some changes musically in his version compared to Tracy's original recording. There is far more instrumentation in Comb's version.
As a Tracy Chapman fan I give Luke kudos here, this is well done and it's bringing her masterpiece to a whole new audience.
@@wreckingKREW1 again, look at her sampling contract. It talks about covers. Lol. This isn’t a debate. He can’t change anything. He can’t advertise it and he can’t make a music video. This is very very simple to understand to someone who actually listens.
Thank you Tracy Chapman for giving us the gem. Thank you Luke Combs for bringing it back into the spotlight. This is an amazing cover of a timeless classic! I believe I speak for most everyone who has heard both versions…”please record a duo!” To all the critics, put race and opinion aside for just a moment and appreciate great music.
Hear! Hear! 🍻 Music transcends all the ugly in the world.
What a great idea
Would love to see a duet with these two
@@rhondaallan4680 unfortunately the stupid never ends and people are saying this is wrong to do
Blame democrats because left wingers are who are bringing race into everything
I would absolutely love a Chapman and Combs duet on this song 💜 it would sound like heaven.
I agree. Like the original one better, but I Do listen to a lot of Combs music
A duet would be epic on this one. He did this song justice, kept it clean and crisp and you can feel his emotion and how much this song means to him.
Oh my that would be incredible.
They should do a duet on an awards show.
@@deenathornton8904 ohhh my goodness that would be incredible 😀
Normally I am skeptical about folks covering songs that should be left untouched. But after listening to this cover all I can say is WELL DONE! He remained true to the song.
Chapman's was way better and he literally just sang it as identical as he possibly could.
I get covering it at a bar or a performance as a tribute to it, but it should not have released as its own single. It is weird for him to sing as a poor black women.
Why make it about race and/or gender. I'm an old white baby boomer. I've loved this song since the first time that I heard it. Didn't know anything about the artist. Didn't have to, to like it.
I'm an old white woman and I just now heard of this song!! Where was I?
So no one can sing other songs ever ?
@@common_c3nts Except she wasn't poor at the time she dropped this song. She made millions on it. I'm glad he did it exactly like she did, it wouldn't have been good any other way. He was smart to realize this.
"Leave tonight or live and die this way..." Glad to see this tune back at the top. Some songs transend generations. I still have this vinyl. Chapman was a poet - a pure spirit. Luke hits all the right notes.
remember when we were driving driving .fast car
"And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder....And I-I had a feeling that I belonged....
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone" 💕💔
It feels good to belong.
She is one of the greats. Her lyrics carried so many of us. I read that Combs identified this song as one of the first songs he remembers being truly touched by, and how people of all backgrounds relate to it. So true. It meant one thing to me in my 20's. Now, almost 50, it means different things to me. It is timeless. I am so proud of him for being a young man who can feel that and choose this song as a remake. What a statement to both of these artists. Beautiful sentiment.
She's still living
Now this is a cover! No fancy pointless touch ups, no trying to reinvent something that didn't need fixing. Just a nice simple tribute to an extremely beautiful song.
Yep if it aint broke dont fix it, pretty damn simple!
He changed the ending to the song. The song doesn’t make any sense now
@@robarwine8130 no, he didn't
Wow he didn't change one word... 😢thank u Luke, for respecting a classic, most people wouldn't... Excellent job❤
Chapman's version alters the ending chorus to imply that the narrator kicks her drunk of a partner out of her life. Combs version does not.
@@Aamodon1 th-cam.com/video/uzOdm9w3J94/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0SL4Fq-FbPNAuC8h
@@Aamodon1 you r completely right... why change the end I wonder? I put the Tracy Chapman lyric version here so people can see ur right
There’s so much missing from the Luke Combs version
I agree.
It really doesn't matter who sings this song it still brings tears. It's so beautiful and connects with every generation of young people trying to overcome the situational bullsh*t they were born into and self destructive habits they inherited from a toxic family.
So much truth!
The irony of Fast Car is so underrated. It’s an American treasure, and Mr. Combs honored it. The lyrics, trying to get out and live only to leave with someone who cherishes the bottle more. The lyric: “still got to make a decision, leave tonight or live and die this way”- beautifully tragic.
Agree.
AAAAAAAA-woman! Every gen has something to overcome, and every life. We can all connect on that level.
Yes but all the more they deserve the credit and be recognized for who truly came up with the words... we would all feel the same had everyone acted like Tracy had nothing to do with it
“Checkout girl” is a subtle acknowledgment and respect Luke gives to inimitable singer songwriter Tracey 🙇🏻♂️
We all are on a fast ride, a ride which can end at any moment. Souls ain´t alright nor right with GOD, to go back home.
Choosing not to repent and BORN AGAIN, souls still daily live in sins. (Luke: 13:3 KJV)
Perishing because of the knowledge, which they didn´t care about knowing. (HOSEA 4:6 KJV)
Those are the original lyircs.
I am surprised he didn’t change it to “checkout boy”
@@boss290t he probably did it since the song isnt about him, and is instead someone elses story (tracie
@@theharshtruthoutthere is that suppose to be sung to the tune of “fast Car” by Tracy Chapman??
This song is as pure as it gets. It’s like your soul getting a little taste of the divine. Thank you Tracy and thank you Luke for this beautiful cover and honoring an American masterpiece by keeping the pure, timeless essence of the original.
Small town life... Do you have fast car!
Pure race baiting
How eloquently you put it man.
Tracy loves it, and that's great. Everyone is trying to make something of this hitting number 2 on the country charts. Great music will always survive. It still gives me chills.
Fake news is trying to do their thing… they’re still failing.
Chills. I'm impressed.
I agree with this!!
Same reaction..❤❤
People know great music when they hear it 🥰
Crazy, after all this time, still brings tears to my eyes. Luke, thank you for breathing new life into this classic song. Although I will always think of this as Tracy Chapman's masterpiece, you do a great job of singing it. No one seems to write like this anymore, exposing heart and soul while telling a compelling story. For me, this is what songs are all about. This and "Jolene" are two amazing examples of what songs should and could be.
I'm with you ❤

What a lovely tribute to Tracy Chapman's iconic song. Luke stayed true to the simple, raw, elegance of this meaningful song.
Tracy said she gives two thumbs up on Luke version.
@@shortandcutTracy is just one kind, big-hearted person!
One of the greatest songs of all time. A timeless classic and great cover by staying true to the song and not altering it.
I was around when the original came out. Liked the tune but never really paid attention to the lyrics (all of them) and followed the full story in them until maybe last year. Appreciate it much more now.
A fantastic tribute to Tracy Chapman’s original.
Totally agree..her version is golden.. he respected that and did a good homage..
Fantastic??? Any singer on American idol could do this … he added nothing to this
@Coachlen24 not to mention he doesnt understand the lyrics, hes just singing them. There is no soul.
@@Coachlen24 His voice is perfect for the song.
Glad that Tracy is getting those royalties. I love LOVE that album of hers.
I love this song
Nobody called Whitney Houston racist when she covered Dolly Parton's song "I will always love you". Nobody called The Beatles Racist when they covered Chuck Berry song "Roll Over Beethoven". Nobody called P Diddy racist when he remade the song from The Police "Every Breath you Take". Nobody called the Rolling Stones OR Van Halen racist when they covered Martha and the Vandellas. "Dancing in the Streets" But Today... EVERYTHING is racist to some people. We are going forward and the race hustlers are going backwards. Brilliant cover! And I'm not even a country fan. I don't think there is a person alive today over the age of 40 who doesn't know Tracy Chapman is. But the younger generation may not know that much about her. And this young country generation are now opened up to her incredible library of music. Plus, Tracy herself loves the fact that Luke Combs is doing so well with this version. She has stated that she is honored that her song is number 1 on the country charts. And she is getting a lot of money in royalties to boot. Screw you Race Hustlers! All music is for all people. Leave your hate at the auditorium door.
Amen
Black or white.. we are all the same. The only person racist is calling out racism.

Nice cover, good to see it will reach a new generation of listeners but you gotta hear the songwriter, Tracy Chapman’s original, beautiful, magnificent recording. The song slayed in the 80’s and it does still.
Absolutely agree Tracy did it best, but love that it has come back I wish Tracy would. 🤞 🙏🙏🙏
I knew I heard this song before!!
I feel like the song didn't really blow up until the 90s tho
@ZeeZee9 I heard it mid 90s in the uk. Mind was blown by it
she whispers and doesnt use her soul like luke
I really love Tracy Chapman and her songs.. But this guy has a powerful voice. Love it❤
My dad used to blast the original in the car with my sister and I back in the 90’s. This is a great cover, and it’s wonderful that this has also brought new generations of fans to the music of Tracy Chapman!
*with me and my sister
hi is Luke i miss you soooooo muchhhhhhh
That country twang was like adding a little seasoning. Great job!
Best song ever brings back so many unforgettable memories 😢
Tears flow everytime I hear this...
One of the rare times a cover is just as good as the original
Earned a new fan.
Never realized how ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY this works for a country tune. Harsh life doesn’t discriminate. This is so good I got emotional
Have you not heard the original. It's just been slowed down a bit
@@lulutaylor8910 yes, just been many years. I like that it was kept true to the original
Yeah, I never caught before that this could totally have been a country song.
Well said!
I mean the song at it's essence is about scarcity mindset and poverty and the toll it takes, and how it encourages the decay of family units and abandonment. This chaotic cycle does discriminate, it just discriminates due to poverty- the irony here being that no matter where they take the fast car the only place they can afford is another area racked by poverty. There are ghettoized areas that are both majority white and majority black in the US, but lets face it the black areas are directly next to areas of relative white wealth with no real reason for the boundary other than race.
So to say that harsh life doesn't discriminate is a bit of a stretch, in that context.
Beautifully done.
Hello there Julie nice meeting you here
Wow! I was hoping Luke and his band would walk away with a Grammy this year, but they did something more magnificent and great. Thanks to this cover history has been made. Tracy Chapman is now the first black female to have a number one song on the country chart (she wrote the song). When I first heard the cover. I was floored. If the Grammys don't get it now. It's their problem! ❤
I think Whitney did it with dolly parton I will always love you
Tracy Chapman is the first black female sole writer of a Country Song...plus she's made money from him using her work!!
Great let's celebrate skintone ...not the art itself 🙄
@@annebelgard6723he didn't write a country song, a country artist performed her song.
A great song , but why people trying force something that does make any sense.
This song was very popular when first released , Chapman won grammies, the song itself did very well on the charts.
She doesn't need a " country award" to cement herself as great artist. But some reason , you all think she does. It's completely dumb.
@@deliriouswhome1 Gotta find a reason to be a hater, dont you? It does further cement her as a great artist doesn't it? How many artists have a song that have now topped pop and country charts? How many artists have song that chart again 35 years after they wrote it?
this song is a national treasure
An ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT tribute to Ms Chapman. This was outstanding!! Bravo to Luke and Ms Chapman for making this beautiful song!
Love the fact that he didn't change much the original sound and melody....love it!
Hits really WELL when you listen to this while driving.
Yes it does, it confirmes my decision.
First time I heard this song was on I-95 heading to Georgia and a Kenworth truck pulled up beside us carrying horses in a trailer. My wife was waving to them. Such a magical moment!
Eu Emmanuel! 🕺🎼❤️🎸
This has got to be one of the realest, most hard-hitting songs I've ever heard.
2:58 to 3:18 shows how you just can spend you whole life running from something only for all those old hurts to one day catch up with you.
It's subtle but the shift from "I know things will get better" to "I'd always hoped for better" - that shit hurts man.
They say if you don't address your childhood traumas, your romantic relationships will and, in my opinion, no other song has encompassed that better than this one.
I ain't no country song person, but this song hits different😥
Actually Tracy Chapman is thrilled with this cover. You cover a tune because it's a great tune. This is how music that is pure lives forever. She's also getting mega royalties all over again.
Still made me cry. Thanks for keeping it real
Me too, every time😭
The most important thing is that Luke Combs kept the same key that the song was originally released. He didn’t transpose it, kept it original.
Way better than the original
Luke Combs did a great job remaking this classic record. He sings it as if it's his favorite song. Shout out to Tracy Chapman.
A cover from one of the greatest songs ever. A song with so much meaning. Also the album where it originates from is a great album. It is my favorite album for many many years. Been a fan for this song since I heard it at Wembley '88.
This is just a great song. It takes me back to when my late wife and I were in high school. hits me different now.
Yea makes me sad 😔 I get flash backs when i was younger and my mom and dad were younger 😢
I like the song and not to mention it helps calm down my 9 month old niece
I am so pleased with this cover of a song that was an icon of the late 80s and still is today.
Very thoughtfully done. It's timeless and Luke kept it that way. I think this shows a tremendous understanding of the original and the impact it had that has lasted this long.
I loved it then, I love it now.
Tastefully done. Tracy's song is a masterpiece.
chicken nuggets taste very good
Luke combs might be my favorite country singer's
I’m glad he covered it because it gave the original song more exposure
This is one of the greatest songs of all time. The original recording was unbeatable, but this one is fantastic. I love the fact that he kept the word check out “girl”. This recording also shows that it is indeed a country song!
Her version is absolutely magical one of the best songs ever.. glad he covered it so more can learn about her and listen to her version he did a good job but just no way to beat her beautiful voice
Yes, a new generation of Tracy lovers. it is good to love our own gen music, but appreciate who inspired them. My Gen Z boys have that gift because of my family and my friends. They appreciate older music, and help me appreciate newer music. A beautiful synthesis
