  • Hey guys! In this video, we cover the basic steps of purging stainless steel pipe, for Tig welding.
The first thing you'll notice in the video, is that I'm actually working with a piece of carbon steel pipe. That's okay! It's just a demonstration, and can even be used to practice on if all you have is stainless filler wire, but no stainless pipe. You won't get the EXACT same effect, but it is very similar.
We start by taping this coupon up tight. Cutting a hole in the back bottom side, for our Purge line.
(Use steel wool, or a thin bundle of cloth to help the argon disperse inside the coupon)- Something I forgot to mention in the video.
After the back is taped, and your argon is fed to the coupon, move to the front side and cover it as well. Poke a small hole as close to the top of your coupon as possible. Argon is a heavier gas than oxygen, so it will fill from the bottom, to the top.
Remember, the whole purpose of a purge, is to remove all the oxygen from the inside of your coupon, and keep it out until you have finished your root pass.
As you get better with this process, you will learn how much gas pressure to run inside, and how much you can leave open, without being effected.
I hope this video was helpful, and please don't forget to Like, and Subscribe to my channel!

I thought you said you need two argon horses ? I only saw you put one .also what if you are welding in a 6g position 45 degree ? Does the hose still go on the bottom ? And the weep hole on the opposite side opposite of argon hose hole ?

Haven't watched his video. But I do a bit of purge welding. Where possible purge in low vent high. Argon is heavier than atmosphere. So will push it out from the bottom up. I also put some sort of diffuser on the end of my purge hose so it doesn't come out like a jet of argon.
      Hope this helps
