This is not your standard teen coming-of-age movie, which is probably why I love it! When they finally open up, their conversation is incredible. Everyone has his or her own set of pressures that make them feel trapped but also motivate them to be different. Like you, Tara, I truly hope that whatever happened on Monday morning, they were all a little more understanding of people different from themselves.

As a teenager in the 80s myself, this was probably one of the most influential movies ever for me. Never been a big fan of teen-movies, not even when I was one myself. But this movie is so much more and different to the typical teen/highschool-movies. Sure, there are some cheesy moments in it, but overall, this is a absolute classic.

All their homes were what could be termed as dysfunctional. John was the physical side. Claire was in middle of a marriage falling apart and being used by both to hurt each other. Andrew was stuck with a dad who had to have a super jock for a son and would accept nothing less. And Brian had the overachiever parents, they would completely lose it if he EVER dared to bring home less then an A. To the point he almost made such a terrible choice.

The character writing in this is so good. As a kid I used to watch this a lot... but never picked up on the subtle stuff. Like with Allyson. You can see her sort of fidgeting in that bag scene.. like shes wanting to jump in to say something and be involved and she finally does. Its so good. Lot of stuff like that throughout that makes the characters feel real.

You were talking through the scene when they were all whistling the same song, which happens to be the Colonel Bogey March, which was featured in the classic 1957 film, The Bridge on the River Kwai. The one basic similarity between the two films makes placing the song in this movie a very good choice, that I just figured out the umpteenth time I watched this. The actors in this film, probably do not know the history of that song.
Budget for making this film when you think about it, was very inexpensive whereas the classic at 66 years ago adjusted for inflation would cost a fortune to make today.

This movie has held up well for the most part. The adult was a real jerk, and that hasn't changed much in nearly 4 decades. The teenagers and their problems are still fairly real. I'm glad you liked this one. It's worth going back and checking out every few years. Not many films are like that. I recommend "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" for a lighter teen movie from the same era and the late, great John Hughes.

The Breakfast Club and Weird Science, both (1985), are two of my favorite John Hughes films from the mid-80s. "Don't You Forget About Me!" is an iconic song I've been listening to for the better part of the last 30+ years. I highly recommend watching WS and Sixteen Candles (1984). Can't believe these films are almost 40 years old! They all have Anthony Michael Hall in them. He chose to do TBC and WS instead of European Vacation (1985) So he's the main reason the Griswold kids are played by different actors in each film. Jen knows. She's reacted to Vacation (1983) and Christmas Vacation (1989) Loved the 80s getup with the towel scrunchie ponytail.

😎👍 Perhaps it's because I'm old (around the same age as Judd Nelson), but what strikes me about this movie now is the fact that if you check over at the IMDB, you'll find that these actors have remained extremely active over the 38 year period since it was made, and yet, I still associate all five of them with the 1980s. I don't think I'm familiar with a single thing any of them have been in in the current century. I still associate Molly Ringwald with movies like "16 Candles" and "Space Hunter, Adventures In The Forbidden Zone." I still associate Ally Sheedy with "War Games" and "Short Circuit." As an '80's teen Dude, "Pretty In Pink" was my least fave Hughes, but had to do more with it being a serious film, which I think was his only drama? I can appreciate it a lot more nowadays. Most of his are straight-up comedies, "Sixteen Candles" being my all time fave of his! This was a mix. I was represented by Bender here. I was indeed a "burnout" rebel!😅 I actually went to high-school in Nashville for a yr with Dwayne Johnson/The Rock. Which if interested, he mentions what it was like around me & my crew for him if look up "Dwayne Johnson at 15 yro" on Jimmy Kimmel!😅 I didn't even know I did until he came to town wrestling about 10 yrs ago & my niece told me he mentioned it & looked it up, & was true! Good job on this Tara. So many quotable quotes. Not to mention memes. The scene where they're talking about how they ended up there was improvised by the actors
Edit: I also love the fact that you do a montage @ the beginning of your videos of your reactions throughout the video. Can't wait to see you get to 100k, 500k, etc

The original cut for this movie nearly is complete lost, even after John hues died. It was 3 hours long, there’s some clips you can find of deleted scenes-
Alison has a dream during her nap where she pictures Clair as a princess, Andy as a knight.
The janitor all tells them their future- bender ends up on drugs , Brian becomes a ceo of a company but commits suicide from the pressure , Claire has a bunch of kids and loses her looks and Allison becomes a pretty damn good poet but nobody cares
The part where bender imitates Brian’s home life, Brian responds by showing his home life by going up to a statue in the library and kneeling to represent the statue as his father

John Hughes ruled the 80s! I think there are 2 movies that are the epitome of the 1980s, THE BREAKFAST CLUB and my all time favorite 80s flick, ST. ELMO'S FIRE.
In the 80s there was a group of actors called The Brat Pack. Well, members of the Brat Pack are in both of the movies I just mentioned.
PLEASE WATCH ST. ELMO'S FIRE. Where The Breakfast Club is about High School, St. Elmo's Fire is about just after college.
It's a great movie!!! It was extremely popular in the 80s and rightfully so. Oh and both John Hughes.

John Hughes is a bit of a mystery. The Chicago area produces some remarkably soulful people, and there's no clear reason why.

That was awesome when you said "Eww... olive loaf." I laughed really hard because I wasn't expecting you to say that. I hated olive loaf when I was a kid in the 80's. I had no idea they still made it. Not that I've ever looked for it. I completely forgot about it until you said that.

John Hughes had a string of great teen films, starting I believe with Sixteen Candles, starring Molly Ringwald, who plays the “princess” here. It’s a great film, even though it has a cringy racism stereotype. Pretty In Pink is excellent too. The only person I could have compared Hughes to is maybe Judd Apatow in the mid 2000s working with Seth Rogen. Very few movies go deeper than surface level when it comes to kids because you can tell the writers are in their 40s and 50s and don’t really understand kids. My Girl and The Sandlot have great kid logic.

I thought I was going to die the first time I saw the full version and realize they're actually was weed in the guys underwear. That just came off as Binder being a smart-ass in the edited version.

Undoubtedly a classic from my high school period, except for the unfortunate makeover, in which Allison, a perfectly respectable and artsy goth is transformed into a mall chick for Andrew to drool over. Basically a "Grease" ending in the 'burbs.

    • @TaraTunesIn
      @TaraTunesIn  ปีที่แล้ว

I mean... they were just doing it for fun, it's not like they forcd her to change who she is or something. She wouldn't have let Claire give her a makeover if she didn't want one. Allison seemed pretty happy with the way she looked and felt so, that's really all that matters :)

"How did people in the '80s wear headphones!?" Well, headphones like yours weren't a thing after portable music was invented in the early '80s with the Walkman and boomboxes. Walkmans have a much smaller set of headphones than yours, and as for boomboxes, well, the point was to boom the music to the whole block, the exact opposite of what headphones do
