    when 90% of the film is the characters sitting and talking and its INCREDIBLE and not boring at any moment - that's when you know it is one of the best films of all time.

      @TrophyReacts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      How did they do it 😭

    • @Theomite
      @Theomite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TrophyReacts Basic bottle episode stuff: 20th century playwriting tactic of gestalt therapy through monologues and catharsis. Each character dances around their own issues until the bonding between them eventually coaxes them to share, thus challenging the audience and the character's assumptions. The characters gradually push each other to the final Act through repetition of advance and retreat (Bender being the main source of creating/deflating tension). From there, you have to make sure the writing is done well, and it's very easy to fall into a rabbit hole of indulgent wordplay that doesn't go anywhere.
      GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS does the same thing more or less, but substantially better and also with a plot. John Hughes was a decent writer, but he pales compared to David Mamet. HURLYBURLY is another, but the characters are emotionally stunted coke-heads in that so the dialogue is supposed to be circular and pointless in most places.

    This was the movie that showed us that teen movies could be tender, emotionally charged, and could connect with viewers in a way that made them feel understood
    Then four years later someone made "Heathers", which showed us that teen movies could be very dark surreal murder fantasies, and the teen genre was basically destroyed

    The difference between this movie and 99% of teen films today is that John Hughes actually listens to his characters and takes them seriously, like they have something legitimate to say. They're not just props for the next comedic gag. He actually liked teenagers. Tell me the makers of American Pie felt the same way. You can't. Great reaction.

    This film is more nostalgic for me than any other. I was in Grade 11 when it came out and it was very representative. When we saw this movie we saw ourselves. High school had very defined sub-groups. People gravitated to one of those 5 clicks with fairly minimal interaction between them. We all knew a Brian, Andrew, Claire, Allison, and Bender. High school seems far more tolerant these days and people have more freedom to be themselves. Back then there was tremendous pressure to fit one of those molds.

    This is my all time favourite film. I watched it as a teenager at just the right time in my life for it to really speak to me. I have watched this so many times that I can pretty much quote any part of it without any prompt from the film. The characters are so easily relatable and everyone can identify with at least one character, if not more because their stories are timeless. The strength of this film is the characters and every actor portrayed them so perfectly. Ideal casting, ideal script (of which there were many) and ideal direction. Every aspect was perfect.

    John Hughes had each of the actors playing the kids come up with their own reasons for why they were in detention, and while they revealed some of the answers to the cast (for example, they all knew that John Bender pulled a fire alarm as a joke, and that Claire Standish skipped school and was caught), most of them had no idea about the other reasons (for example, none of them knew what Andy or Brian did, and absolutely it turned out that while they had been told a reason for Allison to be there, Ally Sheedy changed the answer to "nothing; I didn't have anything better to do" at the last minute, which is why they are all laughing). Anthony Michael Hall's revelation that it was a flare gun and not a handgun was an improvisation, and when Emilio Estevez laughs, its really him laughing.

    This movie was SO huge in the 80s. None of these actors were newcomers when they made this; every one of them had at least one extremely popular movie on their resume along with various TV shows. In fact, almost all of them had been in at least one *iconic* 80s movie before they even made this icon. You could do a pretty lengthy 80s movie festival of amazing films just by following the careers of the kids in this movie.

"Eat my shorts" wasn't something that Bart/The Simpsons made up, it was something that people already said. :) But yeah, this is what we did in high school in the 80s. You have to entertain yourself somehow without a computer in your pocket. Good catch on the filing cabinet slip continuity! I never noticed that before! Whenever I show someone this film I always ask them afterwards if they think the characters will remain friends or acknowledge each other after the films events. I've gotten 50/50 answers and I'm curious what everyone else thinks? Personally I think in a way their views of each other and the schools "social class" have been altered enough to where they would step up and at least nod at one another in the halls. Maybe not hang out after school though, that might be a stretch.

      I always like to think that Bender does this every time he's in detention, and he's in there a lot. He's actually very intelligent and knows where and who to poke to get real reactions and since it happens in detention he gets a cross section of the school. He is, under the radar, the most popular-ish person in the school. Everyone knows Bender, and he sells them weed.
      Oh, and Andy and Alison lost their virginity to each other and are still married to this day. Because she really sees Andy and she let him really see her.

      They would have nothing in common outside of detention. They would not be friends. Not in the '80s.

    Yesssss I love this movie. So iconic and incredible. Alison is my favorite. If you liked this I recommend St Elmo's Fire. It has almost of the main cast it's more of an ensemble post college growing up movie. I love the music in this movie too.

    Go Team Basketcase! I always liked the scene where the head is just stuck in the same situation and equally as bored. Such a small detail to but good.
