Ah, yes. The Minibar War. I always found it funny how personally the Minbari took Sheridan destroying one of their ships. They mopped the floor with the humans everywhere else, but their one defeat deserved decades of anger against the guy who pulled it off? Did they forget it was a war?
That's the whole point. It was a failure on both sides, not just "humans being primitive savages". Minbari scanners messed with human ships - act of aggression, because it was basically jamming, even if unintentional(btw, Mindari never studied the possibility of their scanner affecting ships this way?). Open weapon ports - sign of aggression for every species in galaxy aside from Minbari. They didn't turn their weapon system on? How other side supposed to know this, especially if it is lees technically developed (and like 90% of other species are LESS developed than Minbari) and jammed by Minbari scanners. Minbari were arrogant and with superiority complex. This is why they acted the way they did. And, btw, why someone would send their most important vessel to check on unknown military ships?
@@madzaisathe Valen'tha wasn't checking out unknown ships, she was on a secret reconnaissance mission to Za'hadum to check out recent Shadow activity when the Earth force expedition was detected
Able. They were angry not because the Minibari War Cruisers suffered a defeat, but because they lost their greatest War Cruiser and Captain in what was a "trap" even though the Black Star was using trap tactics itself.
To be more precise Black Star had the best of the best and children of the council and influential Minbari. So losing Black Star was a lot more emotional. So entire future generation of the council got killed leaving. The entire Minbari race is declining with a lower and lower birth rate.
Excellent video that I just loved to watch. The Minbari talked about the defeat of Black Star as the act of dishonor, cowardice. But the Minbari didn't fight a fair fight themselves. They merely slaughtered a weaker enemy that couldn't match their technological superiority. There is no honor in beating a much weaker opponent. However, the humanity learned an important lesson here, too. Don't be too cocky or it'll cost you.
It is more than just the Minbari viewing the humans as weaker. The Minbari warrior caste, in the 1000 years since the previous Shadow War, had fallen for the Shadow philosophy. They viewed themselves as technologically and evolutionarily superior. This is why they took in Jha'dur and her people in the 2230s. It is why they met with agents of the Darkness before and after the Minbari War. It is how they knew how to kill Vorlons with a poison. And after the Shadow War, it is why they welcomed the Drakh then lived to regret it. The Drakh were helping both sides of the Minbari Civil War.

B5 was one of the greatest epic science fiction programs ever. The storyline was basically a full 5 years long. Some episodes stood alone, but overall, everything fit togther. I don't think anyone could make another series like this one.
There were multiple story lines and there was at least a little something pushing a story line forward in every episode. Sometimes it was a 'blink and you'll miss it' moment. JMS had so much going that he actually dropped a few threads so he could keep everything moving.

As a long-time Babylon 5 fan, this is a story I'm very familiar with, but the production, the CGI, the narration in this video made it a pleasure to revisit once again. Fantastic job!
To call it a "war" gives humanity too much credit. It was an unabashed slaughter with the Minbari wiping out everything in their path, losing no ships with the exception of the Blackstar, and only ending because the Minbari stayed their hand at the final moment
I came to a revelation a week or two ago playing Arkham Knight. The Minbari are Batman, and the EA were just a rando street-level thug that just wont stop taunting him despite having all his bones broken by the Bat 5 times in the same night.
The humans, I think, knew they were doomed. Where another race would surrender to despair, the humans fought back with greater strength. They made the Minbari fight for every inch of space. Really loved this video, very well made. Brought tears to my eyes seeing the memorial tribute at the end, so many of the cast have gone beyond the rim.
At first I was just going to tribute Mira, as Delenn was a major player in this story. Then I stumbled upon how Michael O'Hare sadly passed and thought to add him. Then I realized how many others are unfortunately gone now and how it didn't feel right just to select a few, so in the end I added all of them regardless of whether or not their characters were on "In the Beginning".
In the Beginning is my favorite Babylon 5 movie. It's full of contrivances and minor plot holes to get all the familiar characters involved, and one does wonder why but the EA and Mimbari have no sensible first contact protocols (or indeed why the Mimbari never figured out the message the EA ships sent before firing), but the movie and plot have so much heart and it is such a fantastic backdrop for the series.
When the aliens beat you in every single battle (except one), they bypass mars to go straight for Earth, then surrender their entire fleet, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, you know something is wrong. Sinclair == Valen. Greatest sci-fi story arc ever!
11:55 The Minbari did not consider it honorable to mine an asteroid field to catch that ship, but that ship was there to murder the crew of the Lexington, though the Lexington had been rendered helpless and harmless. Great video. Something occurs to me: The Vorlons said ‘the truth points to itself’. Delenn chooses Sinclair who becomes/is Valen. She’s a child of Valen. It’s a whole cycle
I'm a massive fan of Babylon 5. When so much information was released as pertinent episodes came out, it's nice to condense it into a lore video like this. I found your channel with your Homeworld lore. I hope with Homeworld 3 on the horizon that it can give you some new lore.
Love me some Babylon 5! The first Season was a bit of a slog to get through but beginning with season 2, I was hooked. The effects may not be up to par compared to today but the characters, story and theme as well as all the happenings always bring me back to re-watch B5. Nice summary, Mac!
I wonder if Sheridan had been originally selected because he would override Jankowski if Jankowski proceeded to screw up. Unfortunately Sheridan bowed out and EarthForce had to select someone else.
@@kimnice Political connections? Jankowski was cleared of the Omega Incident, and perhaps they were hoping Sheridan would be high ranking enough to overrule Jankowski. But without Sheridan they only had the original ship Captain who didn't have enough confidence to overrule Jankowski, and things kinda went bad.

Great video,I absolutely love B.5., in my humble opinion probably the best Sci fi show in its Space combat and ship designs... And the characters were brilliantly portrayed by a magnificent cast... G'ka and Londo Molari(Who was so much like my Grandfather lol) had some of the most unique combined storylines I've seen... Imagine what you could do with that storyline combined with modern film techniques and FX... It could be MINDBLOWING...😅
I know this story well, because I am a huge fan of the Babylon 5 series and movies! Even though, I thought this was a great retelling of the movie it is based off of. Great job, Mac!
Loved the video. It's nice to see B5 get some love. I wonder if you have ever thought about doing videos for the Battletech Universe? If not, look into it. It might peak your interest :)
Wow you did a great job with this video. Your 3D and 2D graphics are great. And it's a worthwhile tale of arrogance and biting off more than you can chew. Silly outfits and dated CG aside, Babylon 5 had great writing and acting. Londo's scene with the ambassador is terrific. It therefore stands head and shoulders above much of the modern schlock Hollywood currently excretes.
Beautiful video. But just one note--Koplann is the one who said "whether they fight or nor they know they will die anyway, so is this bravery or simple desperation?" Morann is the one who asked Delenn to cast the deciding vote to either pursue the Promotheus or to hold back (wherein Delenn, holding Dukhat's body, screamed "They deserve no mercy. Follow them to their bases and kill them all! All of them! No mercy!")
Star trek was a show with one episode after another. If you missed one - no problem, but the first sci fi show with an evolving story was Babylon 5. If you missed a show, there was a gap in information, what had happened in the last show.
Wow Ive seen this story lot and lots of times but this on of the first times ive see a new way of seeing and hearing told this way very nice i think i will subscribe and keep y eye out for more :) GJ
I liked the retelling of the story; but there are at least one inaccuracies. A member of the warrior cast told Delenn we should capture and interrogate one of them to find out about the planetary defense.
I noticed that your In Memoriam was missing Tim Choate from his role as Zathras and Stephen Furst is there twice. There are multiple others who have passed but I think Zathras was pretty important charecter in probably the best two-parter episode, plus few more appearances.
To those watching this and learning about this great show for the first time, I would point out that during the instance when the narrator makes a joke about “Gil Dukhat…I mean Dukhat” that Babylon 5 predated Star Trek Deep Space Nine, that J. Michael Strazynski actually pitched the show to paramount, who declined, and then promptly stole several ideas and made DS9. This intellectual theft is well documented. Imagine if George Lucas pitched Star Wars to a studio. They decline. Then make their own movie called “Nova Battles” about a young farm boy named Steve Airrunner, and his cocky mercenary friend Dan Lone, fighting against the evil Vader. Yeah, they just use the same name, Vader. It’s about that blatant.
I never understood the targeting problems with the Minbari. Even if you couldn't lock sensors on them, they aren't visually invisible. You could visually guide weapons by remote or even a dragged wire. In a last ditch and desperate stand, you could equip extremely small and fast craft with nuclear weapons for suicide runs.
You wouldn't necessarily need space-Kamikazes. We've had guided missiles that lock in on radar jammers since before Desert Storm. It's no great stretch to imagine EarthForce trying to come up with antiship missiles and fire control systems that target the loudest source of Minbari sensor noise. That said, by definition that kind of targeting system has to wait until the Minbari ship lights up its sensors first before the Human ship even realizes there's a threat, which gives the Minbari a huge head start on lining up shots. Perhaps the best explanation is that Human ships weren't helpless, but having to overcome the huge range and sensor advantage meant they were at a steep disadvantage, and that's why the war lasted a full two years instead of Humanity being immediately curb-stomped in the first couple weeks.
This is a bit wrong. We get more and more context as the show goes on, and one of them is why the Minbari started pinning on their fire control radar and started charging weapons. It's because of one race: the Soul Hunters. Basically, the Soul Hunters are attracted to death like moths to a flame, and love to 'acquire' "great" souls of the dead, and an old phrase is that if hordes of them show up, then a great death is approaching. Dukat, being the level-headed one here, tried to stop the situation from going pear-shaped, but acting on imperfect information, Jankowski thought it would be an attack and, as they say, the rest was history. After the shots were fired, the Soul Hunters boarded the ship to nick Dukat's soul, but between the damage from the attack and the fight between Minbari and Soul Hunters, Delenn was not only distraught but _enraged_ beyond belief, leading to her deciding vote.

Great video. Something occurs to me:
The Vorlons said ‘the truth points to itself’.
Tak!
Thank You for your generosity!
Love me some Babylon 5! The first Season was a bit of a slog to get through but beginning with season 2, I was hooked. The effects may not be up to par compared to today but the characters, story and theme as well as all the happenings always bring me back to re-watch B5. Nice summary, Mac!
First season could have had 2 episodes removed
“After the Omega Incident…” “The military tribunal cleared Jankowski of all charges.” Brilliant Human Resources guys.
I wonder if Sheridan had been originally selected because he would override Jankowski if Jankowski proceeded to screw up. Unfortunately Sheridan bowed out and EarthForce had to select someone else.
@@toddkes5890
Why Jankowski was chosen for that mission if they knew he was really bad choice for that exact mission?
@@kimnice Political connections? Jankowski was cleared of the Omega Incident, and perhaps they were hoping Sheridan would be high ranking enough to overrule Jankowski.
But without Sheridan they only had the original ship Captain who didn't have enough confidence to overrule Jankowski, and things kinda went bad.
Fantastic high quality content. You deserve more eyes on this!
B5 was one of the best sci-fi shows in the 90's. One reason was you didn't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy it. If you are into Drama, mystery and intrigue then you would love this show.
Love the mention and picture of Gul Dukat lol
Same here. The whole B5/DS9 story still cracks me up.
I just dropped a link for this in the Babylon 5, FB group. Great doc! In the Beginning always gave me the most feelings of all the B5 movies.
Simply one of the finest sci-fi shows ever made and sadly underrated in its time .Glad to see it finally getting the praise it truly deserves .
Mate, found you through your Wing Commander vids, and then you make this B5 masterpiece. :) Well done.
The truth ALWAYS points to itself!
Nice 1 Mac!
Excellent summary. _In the Beginning_ was a fantastic special.
It is criminal that more folks that are B5 fans, haven’t seems this! Love it! Great quality, graphics and voiceover.
Yooo your quality is so good, loved the inserts of the characters. Hard to tell any B5 story without the great characters
This is absolutely fantastic. So well produced and narrated. Beloved B5 fan from day one and it brought so many memories back. Thank you ! :D
Another banger very much worth the wait. Babylon 5 is one of my favourite series from my childhood so it's awesome seeing a video about it.
I have always seen Babylon 5 as a sci-fi adaptation of Tolkien's works. And that just makes it amazing!
Glad the Mimbari became not just allies, but close allies.
I liked that too. It's nice both the Humans and Minbari grew so close in their connection that both races transcended shortly after each other. (Humans first, then Minbari)
@@JH24821 ummm.... actually....
Humans in the ISA became very close friends with the Mnbari. Humans back at Earthdome remained xenophobic isolationists. Save for a few meta-national corporations which, by definition, couldn't be controlled by the EA.
@@jdlech I'm talking about what happened after the "Great Burn." I know there was a xenophobic faction that, a few centuries later, got into conflict with the pro-Alliance faction which resulted in a nuclear war.
Where in recent history has that happened in real life?
@@anthonybanchero3072 The Soviet Union during the Second World War.
This is the best telling of the war other than the show itself that I've ever heard. Great job!!!
I can’t believe it has taken me this long to find your channel. I’ve binged most of your playlists the past couple of days and can’t wait to see what else you produce: you cover many of my favorite IPs from my middle school through college years (Wing Commander, Star Siege, Homeworld, and B5)! Thank you for your work and I will definitely support your channel on Patreon or whichever other preferred platform you have.
This is.. Wow... I love the CGI and the storytelling... Makes me want to watch my B5 series all over again... Hoping there are more videos like this...
Brilliant brilliant storytelling...
Oh how I've missed yhis series! One of the BEST scifi stories ever written for TV.
Seems like ive waited a lifetime for this specific story ,Thank You
It is amazing that only decades after this devastating defeat, the people are re-establishing not only their army, but also their authority and influence among the other races!
I've watched this story from beginning to end at least 5 times. You gave a fantastic overview of this. I can only conclude that you love this as much as I do. Have a sub and my gratitude Sir.
I love this series ... the story telling is epic ... well done telling the story of the Earth Minbari War ... i miss this show
I swear the writer must have been looking at his minibar while writing this and went 'mmmm what name can I give it."
Gul Dukat errr Dukhat... Had me rolling😂
You did an AMAZING JOB on the video.
I know this story well, because I am a huge fan of the Babylon 5 series and movies! Even though, I thought this was a great retelling of the movie it is based off of. Great job, Mac!
This was so awesome. Finally I get the whole story🎉 thank you so much
Been a while since you uploaded Mac and as soon as I Saw Babylon 5 I was hooked 😊
Same. He does shorts sometimes. I got hooked when he did the amazing homeworld videos.
Yeah, it's really easy for me to get lost in ~*The Process*~
@@MacsLore
Mac I hope you you'll in the future cover the epicness of the civil war between Sheridans forces and Clarks forces?

Babylon 5 Is one of the Great sci fi shows I love
Loved the video. It's nice to see B5 get some love. I wonder if you have ever thought about doing videos for the Battletech Universe? If not, look into it. It might peak your interest :)
The images and art are exquisite, great narrative as well, a love letter to the fans.
Also 6:09, "EULA'S REVENGE", fascinating.
Very nicely done!! RESPECT!👍
Really enjoyed listening to the to this and the voice is definitely easy to listen to.
Thankyou for recapping one if the greatest sci fi
Man, this was great! I'm going to rewatch this series again! Thanks 👍🏽
I always have a like put aside waiting to be used for great B5 content, thank you so much!
Love the channel. Best efforts are seen. Great way to experience lore! Cinematic and Ken Burns-esque.
Amazing video! Babylon 5 is one of my favorite sci-fi shows!
I love this, I really hope you do more B5 videos, this is amazing.
Beautiful video. But just one note--Koplann is the one who said "whether they fight or nor they know they will die anyway, so is this bravery or simple desperation?"
Morann is the one who asked Delenn to cast the deciding vote to either pursue the Promotheus or to hold back (wherein Delenn, holding Dukhat's body, screamed "They deserve no mercy. Follow them to their bases and kill them all! All of them! No mercy!")
Star trek was a show with one episode after another. If you missed one - no problem, but the first sci fi show with an evolving story was Babylon 5. If you missed a show, there was a gap in information, what had happened in the last show.
Awesome, video of a great TV show. Thanks for making it.
Wow Ive seen this story lot and lots of times but this on of the first times ive see a new way of seeing and hearing told this way very nice i think i will subscribe and keep y eye out for more :) GJ
Mate just found this channel, great content, sensational work on these videos. Thank you all your hard work.
I liked the retelling of the story; but there are at least one inaccuracies. A member of the warrior cast told Delenn we should capture and interrogate one of them to find out about the planetary defense.
A beautiful tribute to the B5 lore. I see Stephen Furst is named twice in the memory and tribute ending.
Yeah, unfortunately it was a mistake that I realized was in there and was far too late for me to pull the video and do a quick reupload.
I noticed that your In Memoriam was missing Tim Choate from his role as Zathras and Stephen Furst is there twice. There are multiple others who have passed but I think Zathras was pretty important charecter in probably the best two-parter episode, plus few more appearances.
You are correct.
It’s about that blatant.
excelent video again all the old memories that come back as i watched this video thx for making and uploading it.
Awesome video...please keep up the good work :)
WELL DONE !!!!! SO MUCH BABYLON 5 IN LESS THAN A MONTH... SOOOO HAPPY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another high quality video, very enjoyable
I can honestly say I enjoyed listening to every moment of this video.....
Excellent Mac!
Outstanding work!
Very well done. I really enjoyed this.
A well made and narrated video. Very well done.
Great video and visuals. Look forward to seeing where you take the channel. +1 subscriber.
One of the best written sci fi series in my opinion. I loved watching this show, one of the best tv series in the 1990s.
Man this show was fantastic, B5 and DS9 loved them both
Nice job. Good tone speed and all that
